I saw the 2 hours long live video he made to present the Canon eos R5 (french only) and he told people who were asking him about the DR that he graded the footage extremely contrasty, because he likes it this way with big crushed blacks and the waveform scope completely extended so a lot of the information is gone. I personally don't like this grading and it may be worse after the youtube compression but he told that the DR is there and that there is info in the highlights as well as the shadows before he did his extreme grading.

  6. Well, it was hardly the biggest mystery in the world but confirmation at least that the Meike lenses are the genuine successors to the Veydras and good to see the co-founder being involved and discussing how they have actually been improved rather than being the low quality rip offs that many were widely opining they were. The real mystery this video solves for me though is how you actually pronounce Meike.

  8. John Brawley has said they are still tweaking the IR filter and it will be a different one on the final camera release From.dvxuser.com IR filtering is still being tweaked. My comments wouldn’t mean much because I had a prototype camera that had a different IR filter than what will ship so that’s a bit difficult to draw conclusions from. I used all internal ND’s on my shoot. There was also a calibration difference with my camera that wasn’t picked up till recently. Most of the RAW files are shot at the default WB of 5600K +10, which is the “standard” BMD daylight default. BUT When you start to go into he RAW tab you’ll find it’s really about -500K to -1000K (Less warm) and -5 to -10 tint (less magenta) I didn’t change these on my initial clips, but I have on these ones... https://vimeo.com/440479199 Which also by the way show the 8K and 4K modes 🙂

    Sony A7S III

Doesn't Sony claim all their cameras have 15 stops? At best the improvement over the current cameras will be marginal or none, just like every other new sensor they've released in the last couple years. We'll see once actual specs are really known, but every rumor slowly lets a little wind out of the a7s3's sail. If today's rumors pan out, the comments on SAR are going to be wildly entertaining when the camera is released. Chris

  10. $900? Seriously, at that price, I'm tempted to say buy it first and then ask questions later. I can't see how even if you hated it that you'd not get all of that back re-selling it so at the very least you'd be able to have a free rental period of it in which to evaluate it. More to the point, you'd probably end up making money on it too. With it being a video camera, it is a completely different beast to a mirrorless ILC or DSLR so just comparing on imaging capability alone isn't going to tell you the whole tale, which is why there is a scarcity of comparison videos around. Having said that, there is no question that it does not perform in low light like the A7sii or give you anywhere near the AF capability of something like the A6400. If those two aspects are critical for you then you should definitely look elsewhere as the LS300 won't satisfy either to the extent you are looking for. With regard to streaming, then, yes, it is ideal for that and can do it straight out of the box to YouTube etc with no problem. What you will be getting with the LS300 versus a DSLR is something that you can put to work straight away when you pull it out of the bag with no rigging, additional audio modules or adding ND etc. and it has tactile switches for primary functions so you don't have to go ploughing through menus. The choice of lens mount and the tricks behind it with the Variable Scale Mapping make the LS300 the most versatile camera out there and it is equally capable of being run with a tiny MFT pancake lens as it is with a cinema PL mount lens. Again, with it being a video camera as opposed to a stills camera that can take video, you also benefit from longer life batteries and it not turning into a hand warmer when it is running. The really big achilles heel with it though is the monitoring as the fold out LCD is just about adequate but the EVF is atrocious. However, there is a magic bullet to solve this in the form of the Atomos Ninja V. With the Ninja V, that issue goes away and you get all of the monitoring functionality you need, ProRes recording and the big bonus of it enabling you to use 4K60p so its pretty transformational for the LS300. So, in your case where you can get an LS300 for $900 then adding another $700 for the Ninja V gets you a bit of a powerhouse for $1600. Its all about the form factor though so none of that spec matters if you aren't comfortable with that. As a device of its type, I don't think you are going to do better for the money in terms of versatility than the LS300 and certainly not at the price you've been offered but if low light and AF and other aspects of DSLRs are important to you then there will be better bets for that overall $1600.

  11. That's because there's two ways to handle IR Pollution. Hard IR cut or gentle. Gentle gives you an more accurate color at the expense of needing to use IRND filters. ARRI uses gentle IR cut and so did RED up until their newer cameras. Blackmagic used gentle IR cut but it's a little too weak so you sometimes may see IR cut without even using ND filters. Blackmagic is either lazy or for whatever reason they haven't bothered to source a better IR filter. Because blackmagic uses a softer IR cut you end up having to screw on your own which defeats the purpose of using smooth IR cut in the first place. A lot of blackmagic's early camera choices were inferior copies of what ARRI was doing and a few of them have stuck throughout all their cameras.

    CANON EOS R in ACTION!

Our avid action choreographer and director @hmcindie has done several high paced pieces. Many of them were some of my favorite posts for showing off a variety of cameras. Now one with the original Canon EOS R, testing its capabilities and showcasing the skills of the filmmakers. Awesome indie stuff. Interesting enough that this footage looks more compelling than Canons official footage for their new R5 and R6. This is a rolling shutter test par exellence. And great proof of handheld skills. No overheating camera, just heat of the action!

Just some vague rumors from April of this year. 4K and 6K. Improved AF system. Possibly 3 models. Announcement late 2020, shipping early 2021. All of that seems really far away, especially the announcement. It seems latest Sony sensor advancements have slowed considerably and now all the train cars are starting to pile up on each other (similar features and capabilities across the brands).

  18. It's entirely possible that under the terms of the lawsuit settlement, Ryan Avery was required to help promote the Meike lens line. Or he could just be doing a favor for a friend (Matt Duclos, who also appears in that video; Duclos Lenses is selling Meikes now individually and in full sets). EDITED to add that Sanveer's hypothesis makes the most sense to me.

R5 overheats after 9 minutes in All-i 8K 24/30 fps (not even RAW) when testing the camera in the car (10:20). Then, a little while later when he starts recording again, it overheats much faster. This camera is basically unusable when recording longer than 1-minute clips. You also have to wonder what is happening to the long-term health of the internals (e.g., circuit board) considering the excessive heat generation. This $4K investment could easily burn out its circuits after the warranty period.

I did manage setting the playback to proxy quarter res to render 8K timeline to 8k final output using full res RAW with minimal grades but is really not stable enough to work on 8k timeline with 8 GB VRAM. Puget recommend > 20 GB GPU RAM for 8k timeline in Resolve. 8K RAW on 4k or 5.5k timeline works quite well..

I know I should just wait until the 28th but y'all been keeping up with the rumors? - Still micro hdmi, - slight crop, - 10-bit up to 4K60 - "won't overheat for at least 1hr How is this "exceeding expectations"? Seems like all they did was: - better EVF (useful, though I only use it for photos, and this body is not for photos), - 4K60p 10bit, - a few improved codecs. - Maybe better thermal performance Seems like catching A7S2 up to A73, 4 years later. Ok fine they finally gave it good 1080p, in 2020. I guess we'll see on the 28th. All of the hype over the last 4 years and now this. oorah...

Minolta Lens on an EF Mount

Over the last couple of months I built up a set of three Rokkor primes (I bought four but the 85mm had a bad case of fungus); I now have a 28 mm, a 55 mm, and a 100 mm. So far I've only used them for photography but am planning to try them on my Micro Cinema Camera once I get a Minolta MD to Nikon F adapter so I can use with my Nikon-to-MFT speedbooster. These lenses have rejuvinated my photography and I'm taking some of my best photos ever. The colors are painterly, the bokeh is gorgeous. The only drawbacks are the lack of flare resistance and a few other minor things; I like that they are generally low-contrast wide open but super-sharp stopped down a bit. A few examples: 28mm: 100 mm: 55 mm: 85 mm:

  29. Have you actually used prores raw in Z6? It has far less issues than presented by some youtubers. And I find AF on native lenses very good in video mode. In fact I was shooting on 2 cameras, Canon C200 beside Z6, and AF is actually tracking better on Z6. Believe it or not. No hunting, smooth transition. They really made those S lenses great for video. There's really little not to like about them. Lack of linear focus is the only thing I can think of. Maybe people judge too much by the looks these days? They might lack solid look (although I dig it), hence they are not good?

    CANON EOS R in ACTION!

Great job @hmcindie! It's refreshing to see an action sequence without having cuts at a dizzying pace, this seemed much more reasonable and didn't seem like the edit was trying to make dull choreography more exciting, as is often the case. Funny ending too.

The Mckinnon's of this world aren't making content for the audience of this site. He's making infotainment and it appears (on the surface) he's getting paid for his passion. Good on him. Many don't. Same with Polin, I find him laughable but others don't. If you like him you're right, if you don't like him you're right. I think whatever level of interest you have in something there's content out there and you'll gravitate towards it. McDonalds is the most popular fast food and it's shite. Doesn't mean michelin star places can't exist and everything inbetween.

It could be that the camera has limited DR but how can you judge DR by a quite heavily graded shoot. It could also be bad exposed too. In RAW I doubt it has limited DR as new canon sensors are basically on pair with Sony's one. Now in LOG and on certain mode it could be badly used but without a real DR test is a useless exercises. What is the shoot was heavily overexposed and he added tons of contrast and lower the blacks .....

  37. I wasn't saying you should fix IR in post as a rule--just that this specific instance didn't seem to lose much. My experience with Canon has been mostly good, especially in regards to pleasing color. However, the extended ND settings on the C200 invariably needed an IR cut to decontaminate the shadows. On the 2 commercial projects I've shot with newer Canons, I've run into issues with cycs lit by blue LEDs turning purple. Turns out I'm not the only one--there's a whole topic about it on DVX User (the answer from Canon: "the camera is operating within spec" lmao). And while rather pleasing at first glance, the color isn't what you'd call accurate. It took a ton of secondary work in post to get the company colors dead on without fucking up everything else. All I'm really driving at is that every camera (and brand) has its issues to mitigate, be it form factor, color accuracy, IR, codec, sensitivity, etc. In the scheme of things, considering what the 12K offers, remembering to use some IR cut is pretty damn manageable. At least for my kind of work. Ymmv.
    1 point
  38. That's not how IR pollution works though. Raw might help you slightly, but you'll spend hours applying masks to the effected areas. I'm not sure BM ever even officially announced the IR pollution issues with the bmpcc or bmmcc, even though the camera is basically unusable without one. For what it's worth, I use the C300 Mk2s constantly and have never seen a trace of IR pollution. The baked in color profiles on a Canon C series camera are pretty damn close to "perfect color out of the box."

R5's 4k 120fps is super clean and very impressive, but the camera in C-log simply lacks the DR of competitors like the S1H. Perhaps C-log 3 will help:

  42. Really well shot and choreographed, but a little too close to the action sometimes, it felt a little tight in frame at times. I really wanted the camera to take a step or two back so I could see more of the choreography 🙂 Did you shot it all in 4k or mixed with HD for better RS? DoF didn't look so shallow, which I appreciate (I like to see things in focus, haha!) What focal lengths did you use? How about the grading? Did you shoot log? Internal or external? Really like to know if it held up well on the internal codec in log 🙂

  43. The Nikon Z series doesn’t get much attention on this forum, so I decided to take a second look at it following the release of the Z5 and upcoming Z6/7S cameras. After looking at their lenses, My initial impressions are positive. I find the Nikon Z lenses much more compelling than the $2300-2600 Canon RF glass. For one, the Z lenses are cheaper, mainly coming in around $1000 and many well under $1000 for the variable aperture stuff and inline with Canon’s Pro 2.8 glass. They have interesting focal lengths like 14-30mm f/4, all the usual pro 2.8 lenses (except telephoto), and really affordable f1.8 primes. The just announced 24-200 f/4-6.3 feels like the FF spiritual successor to the MFT Oly 12-100 f/4 for a relatively compact all-arounder walkabout lens. The super compact 24-50 f/4-6.3 seems like a Interesting street combo or small kit lens setup. If they had a bit better video specs a Z50, Z6S/7S is a pretty compelling combo. Z50 makes a great B-cam or vlogging cam for BTS or story narrative bits while the Z6S handles the more cinematic stuff. I have also noticed with Canon and Nikon the embrace of higher apertures for smaller sizes in lenses. I think Nikon Z pulls this off better, so far, imho. It seems Canon released the usual pro 2.8 lenses first while Nikon took a more balanced approach with releasing some Pro lenses inter-mixed with unusual variable aperture designs and focal lengths.

Again I'm not so much interested in the personal or individual targets (just examples to illustrate a wider point)... I am sure she is a success at what she does. But Mediocrity is the new gold standard it seems. The most successful and highest watched are those who have put the most vapid eye candy on social media and marketed themselves most effectively. And it's all very middle class. Whilst the actual interesting voices, the ones without so many sponsors or the backing of a corporation to gain them attention, go wasting away and eventually will give up because the system is rigged against them from the start. Have you walked around the streets of Berlin recently and seen for yourselves how many Kim Kardashian bozos there are driving around in big expensive cars their Kayne West husband bought for them, off the back of his 'how the hell did that make money' bozo business idea? Our culture is going to shit and we casually excuse it every day.

  45. Well, the footage is a throwback into old 5D Mark II days, with 90% out of it being out of focus... - And the rest shot at extremely high shutter speeds without ND filter, so anyone who thinks they can judge motion from this clip should just ditch the ND filter on the camera they're currently using...
