Forum rules (Latest)
BenEricson and 5 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
These rules are here to make the forum as interesting as possible to read for others. If I ban somebody, it will only be be because they repeatedly broke the rules below. I ask for everybody's understanding on this - I only have two goals - to protect EOSHD and my business, and to make the forum a source of high quality camera and filmmaking info. Cheers! 1. Please be polite to other users where possible, although lively debates and disagreements are ok and to be expected! However, when it comes to the site owner myself, I would like you to bear in mind that your remarks are in my house and on my phone screen. So it is especially important not to come here with a hostile attitude to the site owner. I do not wish to see this content in my home and it will result in an instant ban. I do not want trolling at work, or during home hours. 2. Please do not promote your own products without OK-ing this with me first, especially ones which compete with my own at EOSHD. This includes camera guides, colour profiles, LUTs and alternative blogs or forums. If an account is setup for the main purposes of selling LUTs for example, this is not OK and you must clear this with me first. If I like your work I may get in touch and work something out. However I will always reserve the final say for the very obvious need to protect my own livelihood and website. Please do not use your forum activity to take customers away from my own site. 3. Extreme topics and viewpoints relating to communism, baseless conspiracy theories, MAGA and extreme left & right-wing politics are not allowed on the forum. I welcome people of all reasonable political views but I do not accept far left or far right propaganda on the forum. The filmmaking community is largely a liberal art and Trump endorsing views aren't usually welcomed on set, so it's important to keep in mind that the same applies to this corner of the film and camera industry too. Please understand - this is not about political censorship but about avoiding a hostile and divisive atmosphere in the community. And to ensure camera topics aren't side-tracked. It is not so much about politics as about morality. 4. Please try to post original and useful content! Only linking out to other sites or YouTube content will not be tolerated as EOSHD should not simply be a rehash of somebody's private web surfing history. Please try to contribute real-life experiences of camera use, images, actual filmmaking and relevant topics in an original way. 5. Please do not regularly bump your own topics, especially curating your own editorial style compilation of YouTube videos you've found on the web. The forum should not be an advertising platform for poor quality content. A few relevant clips are fine in the context of a discussion. 6. Trolling is forbidden and results in an instant ban. Users with a hostile attitude to myself or my friends on the forum will be banned immediately as first post is moderated before being shown. So don't bother with that. If a user rejoins under a different name to continue the abuse, email, IP address and all meta data will be logged and depending on the situation, legal steps may be taken and law enforcement may be notified about threats, libel or online abuse. 7. Please do not post completely off-topic posts and please keep chat & small talk to private messages! When a topic has a lot of short opinions and off topic remarks, it can be difficult for users to find the objective, factual camera information they came to the EOSHD Forum for. 8. Any account set up for product advertising purposes or spam will be deleted instantly. This can include representatives from camera or accessories companies, who use the forum to promote a product in an obviously biased way without acknowledging the site owner or contributing beyond the purposes of promotion. Carefully disguising this as helping users on a technical level will not pass muster! 9. Fake users are not allowed on the forum, bots are pre-moderated. All spam accounts will be deleted. 10. Advisory: Whenever possible, please to avoid posting URLs in topics to the following sources: Tony Northrup (YouTube), Max Yuryev (YouTube), Fro Knows Photo (YouTube), Cinema5D (CineD), NoFilmSchool, DPReview, 43rumors, Sony Alpha Rumors, Everyday Dad (YouTube) and the DPReview Forums. In my opinion these sources have too much emphasis on advertising, too cozy with camera PR departments, too much clickbait, too much sponsored content, or even feature a hostile competitive attitude to EOSHD. For example the DPReview Forum for years had a ban on my URL, so in response, please do not link there. I won't censor it, I just discourage it.6 points -

DEALBREAKER ALERT. A 15000$ 2020 MAC PRO cannot play back in real time the R5 footage. Does not matter Premiere Pro Resolve, FCPX. Nothing works even 4K30p won’t play in a high end 2020 MacbookPro. The reason which he does not say in his video but I know is 422. HVEC is supported by latest hardware but not HVEC 422 so it’s like at the beginning of the HVEC codec when hardware acceleration was not supported. Your 15K computer cannot edit the footage, but within a year or 2 when computers support 10 bit 422 HVEC correctly a 1000$ laptop will edit it better than your MacPro. In the meantime, we are screwed.5 points -

Speaking of Voigtlander, I'm (finally) editing the trip we took to India in late 2018 and pulled out a few hero shots and did a basic grade to get a feel for the project and to get some inspiration. That was the first trip I took with the GH5 and Voigtlander 17.5mm and one of the concerns that I had was low light performance as the GH5 isn't known for it, but it wasn't until I got back to the hotel and looked at this footage that I realised how good the combination really is. Here's a sample grab of the tour guide when we went to Varanasi to watch the nightly religious celebrations and see the cremations on the shore. No idea if it was wide-open or not, but this is a basic grade, some NR, and some film grain over the top, no sharpening applied, and it's even got a small negative amount of mid-tone detail. GH5 was in 150Mbps 4K IPB and HLG. I can't recommend these lenses enough.4 points -
Got GAS Creep, used to be considering the G7 as the upgrade from my G6 for my youtube vlog, but for the last year or so I've been keeping my eye on the G85 prices on eBay as that IBIS and live HDMI out would sure be handy! (even bid today on a G85 yet again, only to get outbid 😕 ah well, keep on trying! Will get lucky eventually) However, as time keeps on going by, the G9 is now very attractive. (better AF! No crop in 4K! 180fps slow motion!) Especially now with that 10bit upgrade. But with the Z5 launch (and soon to come Z6S??) the secondhand Z6 prices will I bet soon hit $1.2K on eBay? That's not much more than a G9... Would be awesome to vlog together with this lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1578219-REG/nikon_nikkor_z_24_50mm_f_4_6_3.html Or if I wish to get wiiiiiiiiiiiider: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1494824-REG/venus_optics_ve1018nz_laowa_10_18mm_f_4_5_5_6_fe.html But the Z6 has the big downside of no way to even judge general rough framing of yourself while in selfie mode. Hmmmm.... ah ha! Solution is found: https://youtu.be/ZAPRqUxx5yo Is a nifty mirror that slots into your hot shoe so you can see your camera's screen, and is dirt cheap too. Smaller than an external monitor. Cheaper too. And lighter. No batteries to worry about. No cables to worry about either.3 points

John Brawley has said they are still tweaking the IR filter and it will be a different one on the final camera release From.dvxuser.com IR filtering is still being tweaked. My comments wouldn’t mean much because I had a prototype camera that had a different IR filter than what will ship so that’s a bit difficult to draw conclusions from. I used all internal ND’s on my shoot. There was also a calibration difference with my camera that wasn’t picked up till recently. Most of the RAW files are shot at the default WB of 5600K +10, which is the “standard” BMD daylight default. BUT When you start to go into he RAW tab you’ll find it’s really about -500K to -1000K (Less warm) and -5 to -10 tint (less magenta) I didn’t change these on my initial clips, but I have on these ones... https://vimeo.com/440479199 Which also by the way show the 8K and 4K modes 🙂3 points -

I miss the S1 but I knew I would. I don't regret selling it - especially since I'm shooting like 1/8 my normal volume right now! The fact is that the S1 would never have the features I want long-term (AF and no-crop 4K60) so I would want to upgrade sooner or later. I have other cameras (fs7, gh5 +...) so it's not like i can't shoot. I'm hoping that the A7SIII does it for me and that i won't need to upgrade it for 5+ years. If not the A7SIII then maybe i will just keep waiting for the right camera to come along.2 points -

I'm following this problem from the beginning of the introduction of the new Canon cameras. Overheating on R5/R6 is a serious problem as I've always supposed, we are receiving too many reports from the professionals. I'm sure that professional people will not use them to capture video as Canon claims, I suppose the only solution is the A7Siii, I will consider Sony if it doesn't overheat for one hour of continuous shooting, if S1H had a good autofocus it would be no brainer to choice over Canon, but it's also not lightweight camera. After comparing all the cameras on the paper, based only about rumors, Sony could win for sure. On my iMac Pro it's impossibile to check 8k RAW footage from R5, only via Resolve, dropping frames. It's a workstation that costly me rough 15.000 euros and frankly I will never use proxies with such power. So my advice is waiting for Sony and leaving the idea to consider Canon to shoot professional videos. Next firmware on Canon can't change problems with overheating, maybe 1/2 minutes of better dissipation but forget to use the camera for casual shooting...2 points -

It's the recovery times that are the real kicker. Even if they'd added somewhere with metal attached to the heatsinks to get some cooling between takes (maybe where the LCD goes) it would have been better rather than just insulating plastic everywhere. I bet the internal cooling is sub-par too. You see it all the time with audio/computing gear. Cheap-ass thermal paste applied by a gorilla with a plastering trowel!2 points -

That'll be the day. Most haven't even got past the denial stage! Sony's overheating was largely to do with the A6300. The A7S II was fine and has been a workhorse for videographers. The A6300 was one quarter of the price of the EOS R5 and very much a mid-range consumer point & shoot / slash enthusiast camera at a stretch. But the Canon EOS R5 is a $4000 professional tool. The A6300 wasn't exactly let off the hook, especially by me. It received a ton of criticism and rightly so, even thought it cost so much less than a professional camera that needs to be bullet proof reliable. I think Canon have made a catastrophic decision, and it will haunt them for a long time.2 points -

I don't know blockbusters have been around for a long time so have comic books. I think the comic book films are a lot of fun, some better than others. Lots of "smarter" films come out every year. There are lots of indie cinemas near where I live but I guess that probably isn't the case everywhere. I am rarely dissapointed by the indie films that end up making it to the theaters. Though I won't lie I am a huge fan of large budget action films. They are rarely good but when they are its something special, at least for me.2 points -

To be fair Jordan did mention he was shooting in cool Canadian summer conditions (average temperature this month in Calgary was 10-23 degrees Celsius) whereas Behiri admitted he shot in 29 degrees weather (average temp in Tokyo currently 23-30 degree Celsius). That to me would explain the conflicting overheating reports from those two. The official Canon R6 overheating chart is listed for 23 degree weather: That said, it is pretty appalling Behiri would use a pre-production R6 for what he claims was a “2 day shoot” with apparently long interviews/takes in 29 degree weather. That’s a disaster waiting to happen..2 points -
You need to stop watching stuff that advertise comic book movies. There are plenty of other movies, reality is movie theatres want everybody's money - not just people that want to see comic book movies. So, naturally, they will show other movies and examples of movies I saw at the cinema: Lady Bird, Get Out...2 points

Canon open to adding BRAW to Canon R, R5, and R6
Amazeballs reacted to crevice for a topic
A new tweet by canon rumors, who I find the most reliable of all rumor sites, says that Canon is open to adding BRAW to their R series cameras. This would be the biggest company to add BRAW to their cameras other than blackmagic themselves. It doesn’t matter if you care about these Canon cameras or not, every single person should be rooting for this to happen, because if Canon adds it, it forces the hand for Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, etc to add it as well. And when that happens, we all win. BRAW is our only choice for some sort of compressed RAW, because of REDs patent ruining the party. BRAW in more cameras means cheaper media, easier editing, color grading, etc. So, make some noise so canon knows we want this or whomever your favorite brand is. Sites like this one have pushed brands to be better and right now, they are listening and we need to continue to be loud. BRAW should be in every single camera that takes video seriously.1 point -

It is disappointing, though not a lawsuit-inducing problem. I have a shoot next week where I have a B-Cam on a car mount for the duration of the shoot while I operate the A-Cam (a C300 III). I use Canon's C-Series most often for my work and like to have a B-Cam with the same mount (EF with adapter is fine) and color and from the same manufacturer. It just makes things easy. Even if the R5 was released before the shoot, I wouldn't dare use the R5 or R6 for such a shoot because it may record for 30-minutes straight and then have to keep going (which those two cameras obviously won't do). At this point, The S1H or the GH5 are the only mirrorless cameras I would trust with such a job. When the EVA-2 comes out with an L-Mount, I'd much rather have that and the S1H as a pair than the C300 III/R5. But the S1H has such a nice image, it makes buying an $11k cinema camera not such a big deal. Wish it was a bit lighter and smaller for gimbal usage, but at least I know it's going to work.1 point -
I don't really understand why there hasn't been more structured testing of this issue by the people who have them because, like it or not, the heat management is too big to ignore. What is needed is a pocket sized battery powered HDMI recorder that can be connected to the output of the camera and automatically continuously overlay both time and ambient air temperature on the video recording and that will carry on recording regardless of whether the camera is switched on and outputting or not. That way, people can then use the camera however they want for the day in whatever usage patterns they usually use and in the environment they use it and they can then present the whole picture of what happens in their real world usage. No notes or measurements to take, just use it as they would normally and then analyse its behaviour later. And more to the point, prove it. Such a device would put an end to all of the noise that is being generated by the scattergun testing. Fortunately, I've actually developed such a device today 🙂 and here is a (low res) grab of the output video from it being used just now with my Sigma fP. Needless to say, as soon as - or if - @Andrew Reid gets his hands on a production R5 for testing then he is more than welcome to use it to run some real world tests.1 point

Actually, a camera this size and price, shooting 4K 120fps fullframe 10 bit 422 continously without overheating is unheard of. Probably because it is impossible without making it slightly bigger and incorporating a fan. I'm sure the R5s unique features will be matched by competitors eventually, maybe as soon as next year; and will probably be more reliable and useful as well. Theres always a price for early adopters. What's the point of innovation if many of us can't use it practically?1 point -
The exemples in your article are absolutely pointless. You say the overheating scandale is like if a car would overheat and stops on the highway so you compare features that exist in any competition product for dozens of year (a car going on the highway, all cars can do that) with a ground breaking features of the R5 that exist nowhere on the market. No camera this size and price in the world today shoots 4K120P full frame 10 bit 422. It’s unheard off. A7RIV, the Sony flagship, does not overheat because its only video mode is the R5 normal 4K mode, which doesn’t overheat at all, yet on top the Canon has 10 bits and still beats BY FAR the A7RIV with just the non overheating normal 4K mode (10 bits, better ibis, better colors, better ergonomics). So to take your exemple, it’s like having the best car on the market on most points, and have an extra bonus boost mode that gives you 0-100kmh in one second but only usable for 20min. Guess what? It exists and it’s called Ludicrous mode on tesla, a $20K option and that overheats the car after a few accelerations.... Nobody sued Tesla and people paid for that option on the Model S.1 point

Those mirror attachments are a pretty ingenious device to get a selfie screen when you need it. The alternative is to just go wide (anything under 20mm should be great) and just stare down the barrel. I tried selfie shots (not vlogging I promise!!) with an action camera and the width really made it great - not only because you don't have to get framing completely right, but also you don't have to hold the camera as far away as possible like it smells really bad or something - a 15mm equivalent FOV can be held at about reading distance and you still get a nice frame that doesn't feel too cramped or too intimate.1 point

First shot is in BW and colored in Davinci, filmed with GX85. Arrow shots at sunset between 12800 and 25600 ISO, which worked impressively well in 4K, not so well in slomo of course. I am very, very impressed by this camera. Battery life is good. With two original batteries one should be happy for the day. Sorry for the sound quality and lack of sounddesign. All shot in L monochrom and portrait with manual color temperature, 8bit 4k and 125fps HD at the end. High shutter speed for the fans of motion cadence. cheers1 point

No, it doesn't. Dynamic range and bit depth are completely independent properties. Now, an ADC might be part of the signal pipeline that constricts DR, but that has nothing to do with bit depth. Again, the bit depth of those ADCs don't have anything to do with the DR. Those ADCs could just as well be 4-bit with the same DR. By the way, 16-bit ADCs exist.1 point
-
Folks, just a friendly reminder: Dynamic range and bit depth are two different and completely independent properties. A change in dynamic range does not affect bit depth, and vice versa. Bit depth and dynamic range do not correlate -- period. They are completely different properties. Exactly. You can also make a 16-bit camera that has 2 "stops" of DR. In addition, you can make a camera with a given dynamic range that allows one to choose 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit depths (many such cameras actually exist). I can think of a few scenarios in which an 8-bit encoding would be more desirable than a 10-bit encoding of the same image -- if the 10-bit encoding has a lower resolution than the 8-bit encoding, the 8-bit image could exhibit more detail. Furthermore, if the resolution of the 8-bit version has over four times the resolution of the 10-bit version, the 8-bit version will have more color depth than the 10-bit version. Keep in mind that color depth and bit depth are not the same: color depth = bit depth x resolution Also, an uncompressed 8-bit version could very well have an advantage over a highly compressed 10-bit version.1 point

So Is a7 III Still The Dynamic Range King? (Not tolling, just asking)
Geoff CB reacted to androidlad for a topic
It you're solely talking about video then DR is between 11-12 stops, since the moving picture readout drive mode is limited to 12bit ADC. Panasonic S1 lab test exceeded 12 stops, but it's really just heavy NR cheating the charts, which don't reveal detail loss in real world shooting scenarios. 10bit log encoding can efficiently store up to 16 stops of dynamic range, that's why most film scans have been using 10bit cineon format.1 point
