  3. I have seen 16x20 and 20x24 prints from G9 and EM1 mark 2 (20MP) and they looked amazing. Most magazines are printing 20MP photos from 1DX and A9. They look good. Obviously if you start cropping 16MP stills from the GH2 you’ll encounter problems at 20x24 More generally, 20MP photos printed properly are more than enough for those sizes. Billboards have been printed with less. It’s all about viewing distance, printing techniques and the like. This guy has experience and knows what he’s talking about. M43 is fine when doing slight crops of an original. Ok, I don’t want to de-rail the topic either. But the perception that M43 isn’t capable at all is false. Obiviously having more MP is a “nice to have” but it is far from a requirement! /rant

  4. I NEVER heard my fan start up in my S1H, it's that reliable. And I use it as my main camera everyday. I sometimes complain about the size of it, or the weight, oand most often the lack of good AF, but I rather have a big chunky camera with an AF that's not as good as competitors, but still be able to shoot anytime and everytime I want, under any climatic conditions without having to bring some cooler to put the camera in every hour for 20mn. What a fucking joke !!

  5. I'm kinda impressed that Canon managed to tout groundbreaking features only to unleash possibly their biggest Canon Cripple Hammer of all time, all at once. 2020 has been tumultuous, to say the least. There's a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, but one thing we can always depend on is Canon is gonna Canon. #Blessed

  7. We had one that contributed to the forum, he shared a ton of great information and got zero respect from users here so left. Just watched Behrini's video and I think he did a good job of confirming what I already knew. Out in the real world, this camera is useless for video. At least he produced a real world video...Peter Mckinnon zoomed around on quad bikes........as a motorcyclist myself, when you are moving out in the open at 40+kph , the wind chill factor really helps keep things cool!!No wonder his camera didn't overheat, it had constant airflow! While Gerald may have given some run times, did he say if these run times where on a tripod or in the hand? Judging by most users here, people who want a camera with IBIS and AF are wanting a camera that they can use in the hand, nun n gun and to be inconspicuous. I think the camera in the hand will overheat faster than on a tripod. No-one has given the perfect review yet but at least Johnny did a good job of providing real world information and a finished product that gave the viewer a rough idea of how he used the camera. One thing I do find interesting is that people are more willing to make do with overheating vs poor battery life. As an example, The Pocket4K on release had (and still has!) poor battery life. But, after 45mins I can put in a fresh battery and keep shooting. The uproar from many forum members was way over the top and suggested that the camera was useless. Now, imagine if your cameras battery died after 30mins but........you couldn't put a new battery in for at least 20mins and even then, the new battery was only going to last 3-4mins of shooting. THIS is what we are pretty much seeing in the R5/6. This is reason to get angry! Who want's a camera that could decide to shut down at ANY given moment and then can't be revived for 20+mins? Basically, for video, it's not fit for purpose.

  9. "I think for most people the overheating is actually really insignificant and you'll probably never have to deal with it." - Matti Haapoja at 11:55 in the video. Anyone that says that, whether they're paid directly or not, is a shill. You have a responsibility, when people are looking at you to make purchasing decisions, to be blunt and not try to protect your relationship with a company at the expense of your viewers. Matti even starts off the video trying to dispel the notion that he's a Canon shill, ignoring the fact that even if he isn't paid directly by Canon and has turned down a business relationship with them, he still profits through YouTube revenue and the access he is given, which has helped him reach nearly a million subscribers. He clearly has benefitted from it, has no problem being used in Canon's marketing machine, and makes excuses and heaps praise on Canon. I mean he even said he's GLAD they didn't add any active cooling, like a fan, to the camera before bashing Sony ("I couldn't even live stream with the A7iii without it overheating and that's without recording!") and making jokes about the overheating on the R5. Because why would you wanna make a camera more usable?! Shameful.

  10. When you get one I want to see a BTS on your BTS video so I can see the mirror in action. Of course, if your BTS BTS is also shot on Sony with a mirror, I'll need a BTS of that too.

  11. Thank god for Gerald. Respect. Tells us exactly what the limitations are so we can make informed buying decisions. Frankly, I’m done talking about the R5/6. With this latest news they are practically useless to me. Unless things change in the future we are beating a dead horse now.

  12. If you had an understanding of the actual camera in question and Fuji's Acros profile along with actual use of the said profile compared to Lut's etc I think you would reconsider. Your advice is sound in a general manner but it is not applicable in this case. Acros (with its four variations) is that good. You can dismiss it as a "baked look" but I have not seen anything better in B&W . Since he wants to use B&W it is the best option in his case. I am currently shooting a short film that includes B&W scenes , and with all the testing we did compared to f-log, Acros came on top whether shooting with the actors or shooting locations. He can of course do his own tests and decide for himself but having gone through the proces of shooting acros along with f-log and comparing, I would not bother with f-log. There is a tonality and coherence of the image with Acros that cannot be possibly reproduced with an external LUT. Fujifilm is the undisputed leader in this. Please do not construct my words as unduly harsh or dismissive of your well-intended remarks, since I am not including smilies every three words. 😄 Alas the written word comes across too harsh when trying to make a point

  13. I actually have an X-T3 and shoot B&W so this is not from the horse's rear end (sorry tupp ,could not resist the joke 😄) Acros will be great if exposed decently. You are not going to get the same result with a lut. Fuji's secret sauce is especially strong with Acros. Even in photography, Acros camera-derived Jpeg's are not the same as files exported from raw into acros jpegs (que long discussion and people saying otherwise 😆) I could add a lot of pretentious paragraphs about highlight rolloffs , curves and other technical mumbo jumbo but it just is. The rest is silliness as far as I am concerned Fuji has 4 Acros modes that will satisfy all your requirements although human conceit may make us think that we can do better adjusting sliders .

  16. This camera is nearly $7000 AUD. It makes no sense. Hybrid cameras are the jack of all trades, you expect compromise somewhere. But I notice my z6 now goes for $2K aud. so I could get 2, plus a ninja, plus a full sound kit. Or a D850 and a blackmagic pocket 6K. I dont think I could justify that sort of money simply for the convenience of having the one body.

  17. Is there a reason why the R5/R6 doesn't have anamorphic?
    2 points
  18. All those things you mentioned above.......they shouldn't matter in a video camera! It's really as simple as that. And while the r5 and R6 aren't primarily 'video cameras' they are promoted as video tools. He was not able to create the piece he wanted to and the camera dictated how the shoot unfolded. To anyone who want's to use this camera more than just filming a few clips of the kids.....that is all you need to know. I look forward to seeing your review sometime soon.

  19. I like you and your blog and I think you're funny. But even so, I don't like all this personal negativity. I dont see the value in giving as good as you get. Seems better to me to rise above. One thing I like about newsshooter is how neutral the tone stays. I like where you're going with the comic direction and some of your posts have been really very funny. But I dont need the negativity in my life, it's why I quit twitter. That being said - i agree that behiri is not giving us a lot of information I would like to know and I think he was very rude to you. But he has a point - if it didnt work for him to shoot documentary style on a typical shoot, it might not work for a typical shoot for me either. In any case, I dont want to be stressing about the camera. This is clearly not a documentary camera. PS I hope I'm not coming off too critical or annoying. I love your blog and your insight - keep up the good work

  21. Yikes, I shoot in those temps or hotter every day. If I can't get any video at all while out shooting stills in the sun, my R5 preorder is on life support as of now. I really like shooting with the EOS R, but I was looking at the R5 as my A-cam, not something for just cutaways or a stills only body. Every new bit of info makes it more likely I'll be holding on to the a7r3 and adding a a7s3 preorder - so close to dropping Sony's ergos, menus and shitty touchscreen. Chris

  22. No one is forcing them to release this camera. No one forced them to not have a fan or some other form of active cooling. Those were deliberate choices. They absolutely, 100% intentionally are releasing a camera that they know has serious overheating problems.

  23. At this stage it's glaringly obvious Canon allowed this to protect their C line. It's just their cripple hammer in disguise. I think they tried to take a page from Sony to appease the ones asking for better specs. This camera would be absolutely amazing if not for this issue.
    1 point
  24. I’ve been excited about it, expected it to work fine and put in my pre-order. Sadly, that pre-order is on the brink of death. The Cripple Hammer exists!! Seeing videos of people using fridges, ice packs and fans just to help the camera work is just not acceptable. Even as a B-cam. People are going on that the non-HQ 4k mode can run forever, but what’s the point in buying this just to use the low quality mode? To get the most out of the R5 - the addition of RF lenses is a big investment and certainly not worth it with these issues being the elephant in the room on a shoot. Its cool to see what Tilta has done, but I would find having an accessory like that really annoying. What if you have a beard? Haha. I’m still going to try the camera and rent it for a hard as nails shoot, with my EVA1 and GH5 at hand. See how it goes in the non-Youtuber real world.

  25. Whaaaat? now that is pretty scary 😱 It's honestly looking more & more grim. I really want an R5 but the A7S3 is calling my name if it proves to be a more reliable tool with not too many caveats. Canon need to partner up with Tilta and include that cooling system in the box or else there is going to be a lot of angry campers out there!

  26. Worked with the GH5s a week ago, I shot with manual focus but tested the AF a little bit and it was better then I expected. I googled and found out, that they fixed the AF like a half year ago (it's not on PD level, but usable for some situations). GH6 with IBIS, PDAF and more MP would be a dream

  28. I believe both reviews were honest. This is because of my personal experience with the Sony A7III, which has been excellent and never overheated in any situation. I've taken it to Costa Rican jungles, Californian beaches, and even here in Montreal our brief summers are hot. However, I have a friend who also has a Sony A7III and his camera overheats all the time. It's overheated on us during interviews and even product shoots, in studio, in Canada, in the winter (my camera, shooting another angle, was fine). I thought Sony had moved beyond their overheating issues, but it seems they still have inconsistent build quality. So one reviewer may have received a R6 that performed impeccably, and the other got a flammable brick. Hopefully Canon fixes these issues before wide release, but I'm definitely waiting to see what Sony and Nikon have to offer in the next few months before I buy another camera.

  29. Haha I just need 1-2 mins. I’ll be testing the issues myself if my pre order ships. Coming from zcam e2 I’m looking for the ibis benefits, full frame benefits, Af, and every so often the 8k option. if it can match or beat the image quality of the e2 and provide Ibis and af I’ll be happy. I don’t shoot wedding or interviews. But I do use my camera in the sun / outdoors.

  30. Was not autofocus. It was clearly a manual focus lens with a horrible focus puller. They would have been better off using an auto focus lens.

  31. I don't really understand why there hasn't been more structured testing of this issue by the people who have them because, like it or not, the heat management is too big to ignore. What is needed is a pocket sized battery powered HDMI recorder that can be connected to the output of the camera and automatically continuously overlay both time and ambient air temperature on the video recording and that will carry on recording regardless of whether the camera is switched on and outputting or not. That way, people can then use the camera however they want for the day in whatever usage patterns they usually use and in the environment they use it and they can then present the whole picture of what happens in their real world usage. No notes or measurements to take, just use it as they would normally and then analyse its behaviour later. And more to the point, prove it. Such a device would put an end to all of the noise that is being generated by the scattergun testing. Fortunately, I've actually developed such a device today 🙂 and here is a (low res) grab of the output video from it being used just now with my Sigma fP. Needless to say, as soon as - or if - @Andrew Reid gets his hands on a production R5 for testing then he is more than welcome to use it to run some real world tests.

  32. So in terms of hybrid cameras - and including the BMPCC4K even though it isn't a hybrid camera - is the a7 III still tops when it comes to dynamic range? Purely dynamic range. Not colors, not ergonomics, not soul, not flame-proof-ness. Just DR. I've read Sony a7 III with slog 2 has close to 14 stops of DR. Is the BMPCC4K able to compete / beat it when shooting in RAW? (New BMRAW firmware was just released, BTW). Will Z6 beat it once it gets ability to shoot in RAW via hdmi out? (I am reluctant to spend $1,000 getting a recorder, battery and SSD card for it). What's the DR of the Panasonic S1 cameras like? Another site said that it had 12.2 stops when shooting HLG at ISO 400. I think V Log is a paid firmware update coming down the road, right? (Hopefully it won't be dependent upon the US Postal Service for delivery). ALSO: I thought someone on this forum posted a few months back that the 8-bit codec of the a7 III actually helped increase dynamic range when compared to 10-bit codecs. Was I dreaming? Was I on drugs? Was my mind being controlled by @mercer cat??? (P.S. I know that Sony cameras - much like my wardrobe choices - have many serious flaws. No need to comment on either of those things here.)

  35. Weird, that Canon never cashed in on a XC20, with 10bit 4k 1 to 1 readout up to 60p, and perfect HD up to 120p, with old school Clog, same body, 1800 to 2000 bucks. Interchangeable lenses for eos m-mount. Instant classic.

  36. DEALBREAKER ALERT. A 15000$ 2020 MAC PRO cannot play back in real time the R5 footage. Does not matter Premiere Pro Resolve, FCPX. Nothing works even 4K30p won’t play in a high end 2020 MacbookPro. The reason which he does not say in his video but I know is 422. HVEC is supported by latest hardware but not HVEC 422 so it’s like at the beginning of the HVEC codec when hardware acceleration was not supported. Your 15K computer cannot edit the footage, but within a year or 2 when computers support 10 bit 422 HVEC correctly a 1000$ laptop will edit it better than your MacPro. In the meantime, we are screwed.

  37. Even a modestly weak patent is still a damn nuisance and stops development, it is very expensive to challenge a patent. Especially when the patent covers a niche area (that's the problem with Zaxcom's patents!) that you're not going to be able to recoup the costs easily from future sales.

  38. I am really curious to see how these "non overheating" modes perform in real life situation. I am really grateful that C5D put out the short doc + opinion. Documentary is my primary occupation with stills. Seems like the R6 isn't going to cut it 😕

  47. John Brawley has said they are still tweaking the IR filter and it will be a different one on the final camera release From.dvxuser.com IR filtering is still being tweaked. My comments wouldn’t mean much because I had a prototype camera that had a different IR filter than what will ship so that’s a bit difficult to draw conclusions from. I used all internal ND’s on my shoot. There was also a calibration difference with my camera that wasn’t picked up till recently. Most of the RAW files are shot at the default WB of 5600K +10, which is the “standard” BMD daylight default. BUT When you start to go into he RAW tab you’ll find it’s really about -500K to -1000K (Less warm) and -5 to -10 tint (less magenta) I didn’t change these on my initial clips, but I have on these ones... https://vimeo.com/440479199 Which also by the way show the 8K and 4K modes 🙂

  48. I think the issue is that lighting design (and budget) is crucial for the look of that or any movie. I read an interview with the Hannah Grace DP somewhere where he said he had to baby the camera because of the 8-bit codec. In other words, get it right in-camera. When I used to AC, I was on so many indy film shoots where the DP pushed the ISO of his/her RED or Alexa past their self-imposed limit (typically 1600) because their lights were too weak after being diffused. So, I think that having a camera with the highest possible usable dynamic range and maximum ISO would probably help overcome some deficiencies of your lighting budget.

  49. I have a a7iii + ninja V as my main video camera setup (and a a7rii for photo ) i got the a7rii when I still had my blackmagic ursa mini 4.6k . the a7rii in slog 2 had a bit more DR thank the ursa mini in pro res , so I sold the ursa ( mostly because of the form factor and the video autofocus) The a7iii is a killer camera , I shoot HLG with it because I found Slog 2 to be unusable ( too much chroma noise , even externally) , but in resolve I do a color space transform back to slog3 and use the Venice rec 709 Lut , so you get great colors. Dynamic range is really not an issue anymore on modern camera , I don t believe that the Alexa is that much better anymore , but it still have a nicer roll off in the highlights when it clip . The roll off is more important than the dynamics range at that point , also realistically Film only have 11 stop , so it s hard to blame mordern cameras over analog for DR.
