  1. Maybe Panasonic would be willing to trade the S1H “fan technology” for DPAF. Fair trade!

This 👆🏻. If they deliver a very solid 4K 10bit 24/25p with good autofocus and s-cinetone I’m getting one for sure. And the rumors about extremely low rolling shutter makes it even more tempting.

I think 120fps is internal in 10 bits 4.2.2, If canon can manage 120fps 4k raw internal that possible. I think on the leaked pictures its connected to a recorder just for monitoring. If the rumours are correct we are getting something better than a Venice or a Fx9 in a much more compact package for less money, that quite mind blowing for me. If they deliver, that would actually be my ideal camera, I loved the images from my G2, but the form factor/weight was really not ideal for me.

  6. I have to admit I was fine with recording only 15 min STRAIGHT of 4K120p, but not being able to record 1sec after 1 hour shooting still, or not being able to record more than 15 x 1min clips in a single day becomes from « ok I’ll deal with it » to « what the actual fuck?? »

  7. Presumably Tilta have tested it before mass production. The problems I see with it are many. The layer of poorly conducting material between the CPU and copper heat spreader on the back of the Tilta fan. The power draw. The noise. It is 6200rpm! Obviously the onboard mic will be unusable with it attached even for syncing audio with a dual system mic. The fan spinning on set during recording is not what you want. Even with an external shotgun or boom mic. Then there is the ergonomic side. Those with beards who need to look through the EVF will get their hair caught in the blades. I think it's a publicity stunt to be honest. Even if it works to cool the camera, the noise and ergonomics of it are a joke professionally.

Nokishita leaked a press sheet: At the heart of the new Alpha is a 12 megapixel full-frame sensor that has been improved compared to the Alpha 7S II. Sony is now opting for a construction with back exposure (BSI), with which more light can be captured and which enables better results with low light shots. The maximum sensitivity is still ISO 409.600 (expandable down to up to ISO 40). The sensor is supported by the new BIONZ-XR processor, which is said to have eight times as much computing power as the previous image processor. Sony is also breaking new ground in operation: For the first time in the Alpha 7 series, a fully moveable monitor (3.0 inches, 1.44 million points) was installed, which now also allows touch operation of the menus. The structure of the menus has also been completely revised; among other things, only the relevant entries are available in photo and video mode for better clarity. The OLED viewfinder achieves a record resolution of 9.44 million points and a magnification of 0.9x. Even glasses wearers have the entire picture in view, the size of the picture can also be reduced. 4K with 120p One focus of the camera is video recording. Unlike Canon with the EOS R5, Sony does not use 8K for video, but continues to use 4K, which is said to achieve the best results so far with an alpha camera. The sensor’s 12 MP resolution enables a full-pixel readout without pixel binning and without crop up to 4K / 60p. In this setting, the recording limit should be one hour without overheating – the EOS R5 only manages 30 minutes at 4K / 60p. The video recording of the Alpha 7S III in 4K / 120p mode is limited to this length The monitor can be swiveled, and the handle and controls have become larger, as with other cameras of the third Alpha generation. With Full HD, the Alpha 7S III even records at up to 240p. For time-lapse recordings, lower frame rates up to 1p can also be selected in S&Q mode. It is recorded internally with a color subsampling of 4: 2: 2 and a color depth of 10 bits. New codecs are available: XAVC-S-I records single images (All-I) with a data rate of up to 500 Mbits / s, XAVC-HS reduces the amount of data in image group compression to 200 Mbit / s thanks to H.265 compression. With HDMI 2.1, the camera can even output 4K / 60p as 16-bit raw files (ProRes Raw) to an Atomos recorder. Of course there is also a logarithmic gamma profile available (S-Log 2/3), which should enable a dynamic range of over 15 f-stops; the sensitivity starts here at ISO 640 (extended: ISO 160). According to Sony, the rolling shutter effect has been significantly minimized. The Alpha 7S III is equipped with a 5-axis image stabilizer in the housing, which, measured according to the CIPA standard, achieves an effectiveness of 5.5 f-stops; In video mode, digital stabilization (active mode) is also used, which also uses a gyro sensor. The information from this gyro sensor can also be stored in the metadata of the videos so that it can be used in post-processing for digital stabilization. Fast autofocus and 10 frames/s The hybrid autofocus covers 92% of the image sensor and uses 759 phase detection points and 425 with contrast AF. In addition to human, the AF algorithms now also recognize animal eyes – according to Sony, also at a greater distance than before. The AF sensitivity goes down to -6 EV series, the camera shoots at up to 10 frames / s. The mechanical shutter is designed for 1/8000 s. Sony is using two memory card drives in the Alpha 7S III for the first time, which can use both SD cards (UHS-II) and the new CFexpress type A cards. They are smaller than Type B cards and faster than SD cards. For most video modes, SD cards of video classes V60 and V90 are sufficient; CFexpress is only required in S&Q mode with 4: 2: 2 color subsampling and 10 bit color depth. The series mode also benefits from the faster cards; 1000 uncompressed raws in a row should be possible here. Sony plans to launch two CFexpress Type A cards on the market in September, which have a write speed of 700 MB / s and a read speed of 800 MB / s: The 80 GB version is said to be 230 euros, the 160 GB version 440 Cost euros and supplies electricity for 600 photos or 95 minutes of video.

I'm ignoring any feature quoted until it's properly tested by an impartial reviewer. Specs lists mean nothing, brand ambassadors 'first hand reviews' can be safely ignored. It's part of a much wider issue obviously but DPReview should hang their heads in shame over the R6 video review.

  14. You are quoting my messages out of context days appart.... good for you. I have no pbm assuming the fact that I change my mind according to the new information coming in. Neither you and I tested the camera so we for now rely on others. 15-20min max continuous recording in 4K120P was totally acceptable to me. The new information saying you cannot record 1 second after shooting 30 pictures is not acceptable. My first comment, based on your comment with information that was available at the time of posting and with the unrelevant exemples you posted is still 100% valid. BTW you are the champion of flip flopping, how many times did I read an article here on EOS HD saying a camera is pure garebage, then you actually buy it use it and love it lol. And you know what that’s fine. As we say in French, only dumb people never change their mind. 🙂

  15. Perhaps a car analogy along the lines of this is pertinent: If you put a 16 cylinder engine in a mini- be grateful you can go 300 MPH but crash and burn? But no-one else is doing it so its innovation?! It's ok because if you only press the accelerator 10% you won't crash. Theres really no point. You either have a bigger car for the engine or you put a smaller engine in the car. Or perhaps technology hasn't got to a point yet where the heat generation is low enough to design it the way Canon have- either way they knew what they were doing.

And so Panasonic are the only ones who actually take the initiative of designing a body that isn't gimped by heat. Someone needs to speak to the execs at Sony and tell them that it's ok if the body on this camera is slightly large (with internal nd). The use case for stills is minimal. They should have made it bigger. Let's wait and see what these record times really are under a hot sun, rather than ideal conditions. .

The article is way too detailed and sheds a lot of new info not rumoured anywhere such as the new XAVC-SI & HS codecs, 16-bit ProRes RAW via HDMI 2.1, new AF system.. and thermal cutoff times. So what is there to gather? A7S3 WILL OVERHEAT. Just less than R5. 4K60p FF no crop = 1 hour 4K120p crop = 30mn Now let’s wait and see how that translates into real world use. Battle ain’t over IMO.

    Fuji X-T4

A Metabones EF to X- mount Speedbooster hit my doorstep Friday and I've started to play with it a bit. I know it was mentioned in a conversation about EF adapters on a recent Fuji thread but I can't remember which one. I'll give my impressions on it once I'm more familiar with it, if people want that. First impression it that is produces a nice image quality with my 17-40L and 180 L macro. I took some shots with my 70-200 L 2.8 (old non-is version) but I haven't looked at them yet. The autofocus works with both the wide and telephoto zooms, though I'm not sure yet how it compares to native lenses. I did a side-by-side setup with the wide Canon zoom on my T4 and my XF 17-55 2.8-4 but I haven't had an opportunity to look at them side by side yet. On a separate note, I'm running a test on the T4 right now to see how long it can record in DCI 24p with HDMI out to a Ninja, not recording internally. I know internal recording has limits and possible heating issues, so I'm testing HDMI out recording first. Later I'm going to test how many times I can restart internal recording in DCI or 4K before heating is an issue. I'm recording in my home office, which 78 degrees Fahrenheit, 25.5 C for those of you who live in a place with a rational measurement system. Tomorrow I'll be using the T4 on a doc project outside with temps around 92/33 degrees, so we'll see how it does in real-world conditions. Btw, is it possible to turn IBIS completely off on the T4? When I turn off the OIS switch on my 17-55, the IBIS option is grayed out in the menu, but the boot mode is still available? And what if I'm using an non-stabilized third party lens like my L-glass or Meike prime?

I've never heard of that. I'm familiar with XAVC-I and XAVC-L, and a little bit of XAVC-S in my usage of my a9, but never heard of RS? In fact, I've never seen a Sony codec have anything other than a single character in that last position. Any chance you can back that up with a link to something official that describes more about it? Otherwise I claim your RS is BS, lol

  33. The comments on dpreview Canon forum on the R5/6 are predictable enough. Including: + Reviewers just don't like Canon generally (Gerald Undone who tweeted about no video after 1 hour stills usage, praised Canon C line as 'outstanding') + Covid means there's not much content around so overheating is overblown (there's never been more content around as everybody is stuck at home with nothing else to do!) + Discussing their own cooling solutions (leaf blower on set? could work) Talk about a denial being a river in Egypt.
    1 point
  34. I realize this camera could be a winner for photographers and garbage for some video shooters. For me however, it's in the middle. The R5 is definitely a Better EOS R with Superb Autofocus, dual cards slot, 45 MP, up to 1080P 120 (future firmware update hopefully) and un-cropped but low quality 4k (NON HQ). But for $3899 ? Makes no sense. May be for $2899 this would still be ok-ish.. It does not make sense to pay $4k for a camera that was advertised as a filmmakers tool for pro use which can't even shoot 1 min of 4k HQ after some moderate use. If A7iii, Z6 and other full frame cameras can do oversampled 4k without overheating, then surely it's not unreasonable to expect a $4000 camera to do at least 4k24p HQ without overheating. 8K | 4k 60FPS | 4k 120 FPS | All for 15 - 20 mins mins is OK. Thank you Canon for adding these feature and making them avail to us for some use. But 4k 24p HQ for only 15-20 mins and overheating even in this mode ?? HELL NO! For all the people who are saying to shoot video get a cine cam, or you're a noob if you don't have two cameras and etc - Look, the Sony a7iii, Z6, S1 can all do High Quality 4k 24p without any overheating issues. Even to use this as a B-CAM it needs to be reliable. That's all I need, a camera that is reliable to use in the field. Not something that I'm constantly worried about overheating for using a feature i.e. 4k HQ, that it was advertised to do.

  38. Probably not, because Canon uses in-house manufactured chips on ancient technology/nanometer standards. That's why their sensor and codec performance always trailed the competition (particularly of big electronics manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic/Matsushita) in the past. Now they're apparently overdriving their technology in a desperate attempt of trumping their competition on the spec sheet/feature list.
    1 point
  39. Looks like somebody is flip flopping. Oversampled 4K 24p is a feature that exists in the competition, often for up to one quarter of the price of the EOS R5, and half the price of an EOS R6. Take the EOS R6 overheating as an example. It shoots 4K from a 5K sensor readout. Competitor: Panasonic S1 4K from 6K sensor readout, $2000, full frame, 10bit codec and V-LOG No fan or vents. Weather sealed. So how come that is able to do it but the EOS R6 isn't. Maybe the Canon autofocus is to blame?! 😂 Is that going to be your next excuse. Sony A7 III oversampled from 6K. Sony A9 oversampled from 6K. Older crop sensor cameras have done oversampling for years. Smaller sensor but bigger data rate than EOS R6. X-T3 4K from 6K sensor readout GH5 4K from 5.5K sensor readout NX1 4K from 7K sensor... And that was in 2014!! And it doesn't matter if the EOS R5 has a 'groundbreaking feature not available anywhere else' if it doesn't work when you try to use it! HELLO?! I can claim my car does 200mph but if it blows up when it goes past 120 then it isn't much use is it?? So yes 4K/120p is all very well but if the camera is sitting there blinking with an error and refusing to record it during a shoot of upmost mission criticalness, it's worse than not even having it because it ruins the shoot. You cannot depend on it. You may bring it on a shoot for that. You may NEED the slow mo shot and plan for it. Write it into a script even. Then when it comes to the crunch the camera lets you down. It's a complete scandal. And yes it is exactly the same as needing to get somewhere in a car, but it doesn't arrive at the destination. "A7RIV, the Sony flagship, does not overheat because its only video mode is the R5 normal 4K mode" The A7S III should be the one you compare it to as that's the hybrid camera like the EOS R5, which shoots 10bit 4K 120p, that feature you claim nobody else has 😂 "It’s like having the best car on the market on most points, and have an extra bonus boost mode that gives you 0-100kmh in one second but only usable for 20min." 😂 It isn't 20 minutes!! It is in many cases 0 minutes. It is a variable and almost random impossible to anticipate cut off in the middle of a shot. No professional or artist or enthusiast can possibly tolerate it. The best car on the market is not one that goes 200mph sometimes and 0mph most of the time, refusing to start on the driveway. That car is in fact a bag of garbage that most people would return to the dealer after a week. And it will be the same with the R5 and R6 too.

  40. Taking stills and shooting in pixel-binned 4K shouldn’t brick the camera. However it apparently does heat it up enough that the 8K/HQ modes can’t operate after some point. This behavior seems odd and perhaps a pre-production issue. Which is why I suggested there is perhaps a slim chance Canon fixes that particular issue in firmware. Not trying to defend Canon, if they aren’t able to fix that then it’s going to be a deal breaker for many, including myself.
    1 point
  41. Not to mention he made an earlier video mocking all the people that were concerned about the overheating problem and down playing it say it’s being overblown... Then he goes on to make a Cinematic camera test that is half the length of his normal videos and shows BTS of using a leaf blower...yeah...lost respect for this dude.
    1 point
  42. It is quite dishonest, but he'll address the overheating issues in a future video to maximize hits / ad revenue. It's why he included BTS footage of them using a LEAF BLOWER to try and cool the camera down.
    1 point
  43. Haha. It wouldn't be cost effective. May as well get an 8K RED and be done with it. The hardware is a closed box, propriety and closed firmware too. Just rearranging the controls and rewiring them to fit a new chassis would be a complete nightmare. The closest any third party are going to get to making it usable is to have lots of active cooling going on and holes cut in the back of the case behind the screen, with a copper heatsink mounted directly on the LSI with thermal paste and a big fan... Ruins it ergonomically of course and the fan noise would be unacceptable. Weather sealing would be compromised and depending on the temperature sensor position the firmware might decide it is overheating when it isn't and shut off anyway. It would certainly be interesting to have a tear-down though and see what crimes against engineering Canon has achieved this time. DIGIC X is probably not even 7nm silicon. It is a product recall. Or consumer class action lawsuit awaits them. Sad but true. There are people at Canon who think like some of their customers. "If you want to shoot video get a video camera blah blah blah!" like the last 10 years never happened. There will be sales reps and store people who will say things like "it only costs $4000 and shoots 8K, do you really expect it to have no compromises" by which they mean "do you really expect it to WORK AS ADVERTISED silly customer!? Shut up and give us your $4k" This is just my opinion, I don't know what really goes on inside the heads of management at Canon but I think the whole thing is very conspiratorial. In my opinion the design is purposeful, 100%. There is no mistake. They wanted to compromise the video for pro work, so that those customers would continue to use Cinema EOS products which have an even higher margin. And I think they wanted to compromise it in such a way as to avoid the specs sheet looking rubbish. With just pixel binned 4K 30p, the perception would have been that Canon's technology was still behind the times compared to Sony, Fuji and Panasonic. So they have gone all out to change that perception and found another way to make sure professional videographers don't use it. To Canon it is a stills camera that does pixel binned 4K. To everyone else, I could have sworn it did 8K RAW and 4K/120p, and 4K oversampled from 8K too. Sure they mentioned something like that in the press release. Ah well.
    1 point
  44. Or buy a competitor's camera that does what it's supposed to do and what it's advertised to do. Take the Panasonic S1H for instance. Netflix approved for reliability and image quality. Same price as the EOS R5. The people who need to wake up are those who keep using the 2008 argument that everybody interested in video should buy a $7000 camcorder. It is almost like the large sensor, interchangeable lens, affordable, small, discrete, creative, handheld, stabilised, hybrid stills and video revolution didn't get started for some people. I pity them. The wake up call is nobody's but Canon's. They will wake up when they notice the scale of the amount of cancelled pre-orders and returns!

  47. two things really puzzle me when i read through these posts. a: i don`t think anyone is forced to buy this camera but a lot of the posts read like people already did and now live in a constant nightmare. b: from looking at the whole thing it does not seem like canon is trying to keep the issue under wraps, they gave pretty honest info about it, so where`s the scandal? of course they aimed for the middle ground like any other company would do. canon took a big gamble to have 8k on the box just in time before the olympics. well, the olympics are called off and canon has to deal with quite a mess. question is, was it worth it?. we all know that there is no "ultimate review" that is right about everything, answers all questions, and is totally unbiased. and it should be common knowledge that you need to read a lot of them and then take home the pieces of info that concern you. and right now there are not enough reviews out to get a clear image.

  48. Johnnie provides some info about how long he was filming for in his comments: "Looking at my interview timeline, the max i could record was around 9 minutes. Saying that, I guess the camera “gathered heat” while filming some short clips before and when left on “standby” in order to arrange my framing and light." "I did’t get near the 40 minutes benchmark Canon measured. I guess what they did, is taking a camera “out of the box” and let it run up until it overheats. In reality, we work a bit differently. We film short clips. We leave the camera “on” in standby mode for composing the shot and take care of other (Little) issues like lighting and sound. All this is building a certain heat inside the camera body, so it can be that by the time you need to film your main interview, the camera will shut off much earlier than the claimed 40 minutes."
