    Sony A7S III

Both Undone and Bloom are the best IMO. I always look forward to their reviews. I did learn a few new tidbits from Bloom's review of the A7SIII that are important to my style of work (wildlife): Animal eye detect autofocus does not work in video (stills only). Philip has started a petition on this, here's the link if you want to sign this. Tracking autofocus does not work while using Clear Image Zoom. Tracking autofocus does not work while using an external monitor. Punch-in does not work (manual focus) while recording. Clear image zoom works to 1.5x. Lot's of positives with the A7SIII but there are negatives too. I wish this camera had Canon's autofocus capabilities. With that stated, I'd much rather deal with these issues than a camera that can't recover from overheating until hours later, has line skipping in 120p 4k and humongous file sizes.

  3. I thought the Dpreview test blurb was odd, on the one hand they say its not intended for video professionals despite Canon's marketing claims. Then he says wedding shooters are one of the the target demographics. Pretty sure most wedding shooters dropping over $4000 on a body (counting CFexpress cards to record top spec video) are getting paid. And there are a ton of wedding videographers that have shot with the 5d's over the years - and this is what Canon calls its mirrorless 5d. Its definitely targeting everyone that's moved over to Sony-land and are now shooting video with cameras like the a73. To be forced into low quality 4k mode after just taking photos since that also triggers the thermal limits, on top of shelling out that kind of cash was the dealbreaker for me. Add to that the fact the camera drops photo quality too when it gets hot - something all Canon's do, but this one seems to hit that threshold much quicker. I really have to work to get the EOS R to hit that point, but its a deliberate effort, not while on an actual shoot. I've been out in the sun quite a bit with it and haven't had any issues. Despite all of the great things the R5 has going for it, its an amazing spec sheet and top spec IQ is fantastic - its a hard pass with those limitations. Chris

  4. With 28 pages to get through, it's tricky enough for people to get the required good info that is nested in this thread. Please refrain from further argumentative chatting that takes up so much room. No disrespect to any one person but we now have PAGES of it! Not good. If we are going to continue to fill page after page with opinion soup, the good info is going to get buried and missed by those coming in from Google. And there's a lot of traffic to this post at the moment. Please can we concentrate on informing those people who come to us for help. Thank you. A new test has come out, which seems to have been written with one eye on the Canon marketing department. Nevertheless it is useful to see more results come in. https://www.eoshd.com/news/opinion-on-dpreviews-canon-eos-r5-overheating-test-in-4k/ The problem with DPReview's test though is that nobody actually shoots like this, and same goes for Canon's official test. You are not usually straight into a 30 minute take from cold at start of the day without so much as a few mins in live-view for composition. And you do not take 30 minute breaks in-between 30 min interview takes. So I would like to see a proper real-world test that lasts for a day's shoot 3-7 hours. The camera is turned on in live-view for the duration, with shorter 30 second to 2 min takes recorded throughout that 3-7 hour shooting day. With no 30 min or 1 hour resting periods. Let's see how it performs in the REAL world. For those of us in cooler climates I would like to see a test on a cloudy day, 20c as well. If anyone actually has a camera and can contribute to this thread in a positive way I'm all for it!

The grey market is your friend! Bypass all the unjustified costs, you save thousands on a whole system, plus somewhere like panamoz you get a 3 year warranty. I've no qualms buying grey and have done for years.

  6. Buy an S1H. It's actually a bummer to see so many youtubers/bloggers/influences/blah supporting Canon and Sony as they continue to under-deliver. And here is Panasonic, who for 4-5 years now has been on an absolute roll (GH5 > GH5s > EVA-1 > S1 > S1H), giving us super reliable products with the best IQ and specs on the market with things we ask for (dual XRL, timecode, video tools). Please, everyone buy Panasonic. I don't want to use a Sony in the future. And while I love the C200/C300III/C500II, I don't want a mirrorless camera that craps out after a few minutes.

  8. The bottom line with this is that until there is absolute clarity on the pattern of the thermal response escalations and their associated recovery periods then Its less of a camera and more of a booby trap.

Say what you will about Phillip Bloom but I found his hour plus piece on the A7SIII to be quite enjoyable. Well enjoyed over a cup of fine coffee as I did. I do take his review for what it’s worth as again he is paid and he does have access to nice and expensive Sony glass (of which I do not). For those of us who casually shoot and can’t afford the $3500 body, surely there will be a trickle down of some of these features to the a6XXX line at some point right?

Why the hostility towards PB? As far as I can tell (my camera won’t be delivered until September) he presents a reasonable and balanced opinion. And he states it is an opinion, that he was paid for the two short films and on no account should one buy an A7Siii based on his review.... He certainly isn’t a “shill”.

Hey man, if it works for you, fine, enjoy your camera. I really don't want to continue to debate the merits of Nikon in a Sony thread. Its a fine system and if it works for you that's great, it doesn't work for me and that's not changing soon. Apologies for derailing this discussion and bringing Nikon talk into a Sony thread. Here's another BTS video from one of the launch videos, its in French but the subtitles will auto translate.

  20. Have a look at some of the Sony,Canon and Panasonic HD palmcorders as well as many of them have LANC controls which will make the simultaneous controlling easier and they are usually very cheap used. The form factor is quite useful too as they all tend to be quite narrow which could be a benefit in placing them for overlapping coverage. Good luck with it.

  21. R is still a pretty good 1080p camera with good colour, i guess R5/R6/R are all 1080p cameras in heart, those fancy 4k/8k options are to be used very sparingly.

  22. Maybe they did notice the bug or the overheating too late (after production began) but decided to release it anyway. They were fairly quick to post those max record times before overheating. Maybe they thought they just could get away with it. Going to buy myself a used EOS R. Low price, no overheating and perfect B-cam for my C100.

  25. Just as a proof of concept you could just go with six lowest budget action cameras that you can find that have real time HDMI output. You won't get the simultaneous control but neither will you need it because they are all fixed focus autoexposure models anyway and it will be adequate to check your realtime stitching process. I'd be inclined to get one with a narrower FOV and whilst I can't give you specific models there are plenty of people on here who use action cams who are up to speed with what the latest and greatest clone ones are. EDIT> If you want to step it up to a level above action cameras once you've got the stitching working then you could go with a set of used Panasonic LX100s which you can do full image and zoom lens control by wifi with the added bonus of 4K. They are readily available for under £200 used these days so £1200 for a large format video camera with 3x integral zoom isn't unreasonable ! I've just remembered that the LX100 does not have a live HDMI output so would be OK for recording but not for live stitching. Something like used Panasonic FZ1000s would do the same job albeit with a smaller sensor though. You'd need something custom to control six of them simultaneously from one base unit but thats not insurmountable if you know someone who's into that kind of thing... Above that, then six BM Micro Cinema Cameras would be an option but you'd be then into finding six matched lenses etc so you'd be looking at about three times the cost of using something like the FZ1000s.

    Why no Camera Arrays?

Was that your first ever selfie?

  27. Time and more points of failure are the reason this is not done. It's pretty much the same reason 3D fell out of favor. +2 Cameras = More grip gear and power +You have to sync the cameras +The settings have to be exactly the same +Your LENSES have to be exactly the same (AKA you need high end matched sets) +The cameras and Lenses have to be aligned properly and at the same focus. +You have to pay an extra person on set to make sure all of that is working properly. +Good luck changing lenses fast! It's useful on maybe landscapes and TV demo/stock footage and like you said VFX (Example being the incredible rig used on The Irishman, I wish someone had come up with before 3D died) but it's a nightmare for simple narrative.

  30. Well, its funny you should mention shutter release for cameras that don't have them as we have literally just finished creating a one-off custom PBC system to do it mechanically for stop frame animation for a customer for on a Pocket4K. Unless you are powering the camera from the mains, trying to do it over wifi is going to be problematical over any great length of time due to the battery drain. Mechanical is definitely more straightforward, providing that, again, you have power for the Arduino or whatever you are running it from. As long as you can position it correctly and the shutter button stands out from the body, then a simple servo can be used to activate it and an Arduino programmed easily to control it. There are plenty of options from that basic point to be able to finesse it in terms of how you trigger it so you can have a basic wire and switch attached to the Arduino or add a radio or IR sensor or even a BLE or WiFi module if you want to do it wirelessly.

First I have the camera on order. Don't get so defensive, its a joke - hence the "LOL!" No hate or jealousy, every damn review gets shill comments. Its become the thing if you don't agree with their conclusions - like the silly banging about color science or filmic, or cinematic - you know things that can't actually be quantified. Its a great review and I like Bloom because he's so through in his testing. There's nothing in there that makes me want to cancel my order and it mostly just gets me more excited to start shooting with it. Chris Never said anything about his talent, I said grab a coffee because its 75 minutes long. And the shill comment was a joke, guess the LOL part wasn't clear. Where do people come up with this stuff?

It is not just higher taxes, but various extra red tape / safety regulations / consumer protections / higher costs / trade protectionism / etc in Europe that all add up to resulting in higher prices for goods, "a death by a thousand cuts". If you don't like it, then either move, or vote for better politicians who'll make life more business friendly in your country.

  35. Back in 2018 (remember that there were times you were allowed to travel??) we took the kids to Japan, and I shot it with my GH5 and the wife shot it with her iPhone 8 Plus, and as a lot of the landmarks have pretty obvious places for a good composition we took many shots from the same location, often only moments apart. One thing that I was stunned about was how good the iPhone colour science was. Later on I struggled to replicate it from the GH5 HLG files I had, as the iPhone managed to get a clean, high contrast / high saturation look, while also not pushing things over the edge in terms of contrast or sat. So finely tuned was the colour science I pulled some of them into Resolve and if you even nudged them slightly the magic disappeared and they looked like images from a poor quality consumer camera. I'm very skeptical of higher resolution sensors in phones - you're very unlikely to print the images and decent size and if you're consuming them electronically it's not that common to have a high resolution display device for that purpose. Better to get the DR and colour science right and let the rest be as it may.

Am I the only one who got buffled by a A7S3 US vs Europe price tag difference? Its 3500 vs 5000$ if we do the conversion, a 43% difference! Are they out of their fuckin minds? Yes, I know that the US price doesn't inculde taxes, but they are not even remotly close to 43%.

That's what using the IMX594CQR sensor would mean. Although I'd be perfectly happy if they could deliver the GH5S with IBIS, and the 4K 160fps of the E2, and with ProRes RAW external, and all at a price point of US$1.5K (why not? That is the price of the Z Cam E2 M4 which is already released). Yes, the Panasonic G95 and G100 has been disappointing!! And where are the GF/GM updates, forgotten about? Yes, for me PDAF is merely a "want", and a long way from a *need*, but seeing them deliver on PDAF would bring about greater faith in the future of MFT.

  39. Great question. 1. Value. You can purchase a cinema lenses that were 10 of thousands of dollars for 5 to 20 percent of what they cost new especially for B4 lenses. You can purchase a Fujinon 15x para focal constant aperture cinema B4 lens zoom lens for $1700 on ebay today, Adorama sells it as a special order for $39,500. https://www.adorama.com/fuhac15x73b.html?utm_source=adl-gbase 2. Performance. Having access to a long zoom range and much of it at a constant aperture (in many cases) opens up creative possibilities. Size, weight and cost are in line with the reasons people chose super 16 in the first place:. You get a tool for shooting like a lager budget production at a lower cost with some expected compromises like greater depth of field. 3. Design: a true cinema is a joy to behold and to hold and use. You can get a Zeiss DigiZoom 6-24mm (that’s like a 24mm - 96mm) 1.9T constant aperture for $1600 on ebay with a flight case. This was about $60k new. The thing is It is a Zeiss cinema lens and the glass has the Zeiss look/fire.. 4. the right toot for the right job. If you have $1500 prime lens, why not complement it with a $1,500 ($50K designed zoom lens). I think you need both because and they are different tools. Yet, with the right sensor you can get both looks/functions on a budget. 5. It is really a matter of preference. Some productions shot on super 16 for the look, control, speed of shooting and the cost savings. I think some people will shoot it again because it is now possible to get the color fidelity and resolution of close to film with BLackmagic new RGB sensor tech. The limitations weren’t the lens in the first place, so people can now get the look they previously had loved and enjoyed without the costs of shooting on film. To me it is a comparatively inexpensive way to get a much-needed cinema tool.

  42. I started with mirrorless video a year and a half ago and I'm still learning how it works. Recent discussions about new cameras and image quality got me wondering about how much oversampling cleans up noise in high ISO shots. Especially in Super35. So I shot this test on my X-T3, ISO 25600, 18-55 zoom at f8 on tripod from the same position. Varied shutter for exposure. Samples straight from camera without any grading. (First time I ever shot at this high ISO!) Natural room light from windows with Sunlight white balance. First - actual size crop from a “FINE” JPG photo at 6240 x 3512 for a 1:1 (not oversampled) comparison. Eterna profile with boosted color, noise reduction -4 and sharpness -4, lowest. Second - actual size crop from an oversampled UHD 60p 10bit HEVC movie frame, same settings: the 6K is from this angle: and the 4K oversampled is from this angle: which required a little zoom lens trial and error to get the "actual size" crops equal to compare. I also recall Andriodlad said something about the Fuji 60p having a little less oversampling than 24p or 30p, they would be cleaner.

  43. P40 Pro is the best smartphone camera out there in 2020. The dilemma is this... Google Services hack works, but is flakey. I have it working, but for how long? First time I tried, took me 5 hours to get it working and then reset itself after I restarted the handset! Phone overall is not as nice in the hand as the Samsung S20 Ultra. A sharp metal edge at bottom digs into skin. Speaker is mediocre. Screen is smaller than I'd like (I am a Note 10+ / iPhone XS Max guy). But yes, the camera especially 5x zoom and ultra wide is in different league to the Samsung S20 Ultra 5x and ultra wide, especially in low light. The main camera is better to pixel peep than the S20 Ultra as well, but I prefer the colours sometimes on the S20 Ultra. P40 Pro dynamic range in the Leica colour modes is limited, and the HDR is laid on too much in the normal mode. The RAW files are amazing. The S20 Ultra RAW files are noisier and not as sharp. So thumbs up for the P40 Pro camera in terms of hardware. Best sensor, best lenses, best zoom and best ultra wide sensor and lens. However in reality, as an all-round phone the S20 Ultra feels more premium. Just another level up in terms of build, design, overall experience. That is not to say the P40 Pro is not also very good in these areas. These are all top end phones. Next up the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has a very good main sensor. But it is let down by the processing with dreadful skin tones and poor quality lenses. The zoom isn't as good, nether is ultra wide camera. The biggest problem however is how susceptible it is to slight finger prints on lens. Even almost unnoticeable amounts of greese will cause huge vertical or horizontal flares on the image whereas an iPhone doesn't do this. But the kicker is the Mi 10 Pro main sensor images are better than S20 Ultra with same sensor!! So Xiaomi got more out of the Samsung sensor than Samsung's own engineers. Xiaomi went for resolution with 2x2 binning from the 108MP. Whereas Samsung went for... I don't know what... 12MP 3x3 binning with over sharpening ramped up! But I has good dynamic range and colour, satisfying skin tones. All in all... I wish I could transplant the P40 Pro camera hardware into the S20 Ultra. My iPhone XS Max still has the most natural looking images of all of them straight out of camera with no additional processing, but it feels dated in technical terms and dreadful zoom ability in comparison to the folded periscope optics of the S20 Ultra and P40 Pro. By the way the 8K video on Mi 10 Pro and S20 Ultra is interesting. I'm comparing both at the moment. The P40 Pro video is good too in 4K/60p, but it lacks 8K. I feel like keeping the P40 Pro for the camera and using S20 Ultra as daily driver. It is an extraordinary street photography camera, is the P40 Pro, with amazingly deep depth of field on the 125mm 5x zoom end. This is unique. Everything is in focus in a telephoto frame! It's not so bad in dim light either! It nails focus every time in fact, whereas the S20 Ultra can sometimes be a bit hesitant.

take one ajax bottle, one full moon, one p4k, and one canon fd 50mm ssc f1.4 lens, its the fastest thing i own. Never tried the p4k by the light of the full moon before. Straight out of camera grabbed three frames from three clips. one shot at 3200, then 12600, and one at 25600. They are ungraded so you can make your own assessment. It was an interesting learning experience. I can't see that i would normally use these iso's , maybe if i was trying to capture the aurora australis or a concert perhaps or some other once in a lifetime opportunity. i guess at that point, something is better than nothing. the first photo is 12600 the second is 3200 and last is 25600. Go back and look at the comments on PM’s videos when he used the 1DX..people lusting over having one so they could be “like him”. Not saying its right, just saying perceived image is part of the equation in selling products. It’s moments like these with flagship FF cameras from Panasonics direct competitors self-combusting on the interwebs, is exactly why they need someone out there trumpeting their reliable, workhorse, cameras. It’s marketing 101.

  49. I'm in the exact same boat as you. I bought a Sony a6400 last year to try and make my workflow easier with autofocus (I shoot 80% documentaries). It was so nice 95% of the time, but it always failed me when the shot mattered the most! Just bad luck I guess. Also the footage from it just looks dull to my eye, lacking in colour and lots of noise reduction above ISO 4000 or so making it really plasticky. With my S1H and GH5s, I am always blown away when I see the footage on my computer after a day of filming. It always looks way better than what I saw on the LCD/viewfinder making the overall shooting experience fun for me. These cameras will keep me satisfied for years upon years. No more GAS for me! ...(hopefully).
