We have already seen some AB tests of the a7s and R6. The colours aren't THAT different. I think you're all kidding yourselves when you say it has a colour problem. I am unbiased as I don't own or intend to own either cams or anything like them. If you're not seeing good colour from a7s videos then it is the fault of the colour grader. And "thick colour" is the same nonsense as what photographers call "3d pop". You're just reaching for terminology to reinforce/shill your idea. It's possible to see thick colour as you're grading a file but not just based off seeing the final product.5 points

I’m going to buy a Komodo. So I can come on here and tell the amateur hybrid camera video makers all about my thick colour, GS (yes! yes! YES!) and other juicy comments designed to reinforce my self built pedestal... Or I might remain perfectly happy with my A7Siii at -30 degrees, iso 51k at midnight filming the Aurora in Sony thin colour whilst keeping my fingers warm by sticking them into the sensor (thereby ruining the final vestiges of what was terrible IBIS anyway). I might be an old cynic but.... If I was worried about a web site harvesting your email address, then I'd be very dubious about going to a web site that offers to check that for you in return for you entering your email address. To be honest, I'd be pretty concerned that I'd just added my email address to a more valuable list of ones that hadn't already been harvested 🙂 I'm sure its legit though.3 points

Can you point to where I said URSA Mini 4.6K in my list rather than the global shutter equipped URSA Mini 4K ? I mean, you even quoted BM Ursa Mini 4K from my list in your reply for fucks sake. You might has well have said there is no global shutter on a Sony RX100 if you're going to try and be a smart arse and quote cameras that I didn't mention. There has been absolutely no "GS sensor wars" in any years let alone recent ones and I've got no idea where you've got that idea from.2 points

As a tip for everyone else, you can get the same feature using gmail by adding +eoshd-com after your name. Gmail ignores the "+eoshd-com" part, but you can see which address the mail was sent to. A few sites does not allow these kind of addresses, but most do. Example: unclebobsphotography+eoshd-com@gmail.com will arrive in the inbox of unclebobsphotography@gmail.com This also makes it easy to block all emails to with this post-fix if needed2 points -

Interesting development but having had a micro hdmi break on me even when clamped in a cage (fortunately only for monitor not recorder) , I wouldn't want to rely on that for recording all day, especially if you can't record internally for back up. Too many other things to worry about when shooting all day without playing Russian roulette with overheating and those shitty connections2 points -

I get it, I shoot handheld with my C200 all the time and it has no IBIS but due to it's weight I don't even notice; there's also ways to reduce rolling shutter distortion without GS (cameras with faster scan times, slower camera movements, etc.) and like I mentioned I would love a GS, but I still find IBIS more useful than a GS because for the types of projects that I work on RS is not a problem for me but camera operator shakiness is (hand holding a GH5 I'd pick IBIS any day over a GS). With a GS but no IBIS I would have to make the GH5 heavier, use a gimbal more often, use stabilized lenses (currently my MFT lenses are 100% manual), etc.2 points -

I'm happily using my A7III for paid work and so are many others... so, I guess? I sold an M43 lens to someone that ranted away at how trash the Sonys were and how they fell apart on him after a year... Mine looks more or less the same as the day I bought it, and all the buttons still work fine. I don't love the A7III but I love it for its price point and capabilities when it was released. It has many flaws and things that I don't like, but the old school of "it's not metal and hard therefore trash and will fall apart" is... old school. The materials aren't "really cheap", I don't do handheld so how it feels doesn't matter as much, but there's nothing wrong with how the A7III feels, the menus aren't great but they're fine, I set up the custom menu and I can scroll... Why do you think people use BMPCC 4K? For it's useability on a gimbal? for the tilting screen and long battery life, as well as external ssd and no af-c? It's for the IQ and price... So yeah, lots of people will put up with whatever you apparently "can't" put up with. I can't deal with no AF-C but I don't tell other people they need it and then ask them why they don't...2 points -
Canon RF Mount Red Komodo Style Camera On the Way?
currensheldon and one other reacted to crevice for a topic
The new C300 has 16 stops of dynamic range, to go with that raw internal, so I think it will hold its place with the folks that it is targeted at. I thought the R5 sounded too good to be true as a hybrid shooter, but it ended up living up to the hype for me. Yeah I know, overheat gate - but that does not affect me as I only shoot in bursts for video and when I need longer I can do regular 4K or 4K HQ unlimited to an Atomos Ninja. But if this new camera has killer DR it would be awesome to pair with an R5, especially with no need to buy new lenses or batteries. If its similar quality video and just longer record times with no overheating, I will stick to the R5 as again I can just record as long as I want in HQ 4K with an atomos or bursts internal.2 points -

These are unit sales right? Unit sales do not tell you about profit or margin. You can sell a smaller quantity of more expensive high margin cameras. There is a lot of money left in the camera industry. If a couple of soulless corporations leave, then I won't shed many tears to be quite honest. They have put shareholder profits over cameras at every opportunity. And if the quality of images from the Huawei P40 Pro does suggest the camera industry is heading back to making tools for a niche of artists and professionals. I'm fine with that to be honest. Sigma, Fuji, Panasonic... the thinking man's cameras.1 point -
Let's talk about Sony A7S III overheating
ntblowz reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
A comment on Hugh's YouTube video explains why the testing needs to be more thorough. Most of the reviews were put out in a hurry and don't tell the whole story on the A7S III thermal limitations. Hugh: I am an Electrical Engineer of 30+ years designing electronics for the automotive world which must maintain operation (NO shutdown) to 85C (185F) and without permanent damage over 100C (212F). The trunk of any car in Phoenix, Houston, or Florida (where I live) will easily exceed 140F for 6 months of the year. I contacted Dan and expressed my concerns with some test errors he made, his interpretations regarding heating/damaging of electronics in general, plus other variables reviewers continue to miss. It looks like you are trying to make some honest assessments here but there are a multitude of variables here that you (and others) are still missing. I don’t think Dan took my suggestions well so I will try you. As you noted, and I pointed out to Dan, internal heat generation (radiation) is outbound as well as thermal absorption (inbound). There are actually THREE thermal tests that must be made to determine if the camera is a net “source” or a “sink”; (1) standard room temp of 23C (73F), (2) outdoor/hi-temp under “sun-load”, but also CRITICAL is (3) which is simply outdoor/hi-temp in the shade! This shade reference is CRITICAL since this test will tell you if the thermal failure is absorption (inbound) vs. radiation (outbound) induced. You MUST do this third test or you cannot make ANY conclusions on thermal propagation of the camera. No reviewer is understanding this point since they are not Engineers. I get that but then they extrapolate conclusions which are simply wrong – some favoring Sony and Canon and some against both brands. Until you have a FLIR type camera showing thermal mapping of the body (AND the body/lens SYSTEM), you really don’t have any idea where the heat source/problem area is located. It is simply assumed to be worst on the back side since this is what Photographers look at all the time. It may be on the bottom or on the sides – no one knows until you look for it at least with some JK type thermocouples.1 point -
Clearly all of this smells BS from Canon with software limit. - Camera is cold to the touch and colder than A7SIII after overheating (as measured with a thermometer gun). - You can't shoot HQ video after browsing menus and shooting a few stills. - Removing the memory card when external recording allows for hours of recording. Put that memory card in the body, and it's 45 min even though the card is inactive. - Overheating time is basically the same inside a house with AC and outside under the sun with high temps (unlike the A7S III and any other camera in the world). You don't have to be an engineer (which I am) to see what Canon did right there. I hope they fix their mess. This camera will never be perfect (you can always expect overheating with 8K and 4K120p without active or good passive cooling) for people who need very long continuous recording. But it can be perfect for the majority of us who need a do it all hybrid, and have the ability to take several short 4K120p clips per hour, with still shooting in between. If they don't make it right hybrid shooters are in for another couple of year of waiting (for those who wanted a complete package of at least 4K60P 10 bits + IBIS + great AF + great stills + FF in a small package).1 point

I shoot with the z6 every week. I can tell you that much improved or not, the autofocus is not good enough to use. I just did a shoot: 6 takes with presenter moving from wide shot to medium close up and none tracked focus property, and when it missed it focussed on the background. Tracking objects equally hit and miss. But hey I hear you on the feel of the footage. I owned and sold a gh5 partly for the same reason. A much more usable camera for video, but with worse results (at least for what I do). I seem to have a thing for buying cameras with shite af. I'm starting to get jobs that require it, so for me the z6ii is a make or break for me and nikon.1 point

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2YDycrYZg8 Another test with the Ninja V but this time with the battery still in, no dummy battery. Lasted 1hr 30. So NoLife's video looks like it wasn't an isolated result. While this is encouraging in terms of being a usable camera, a £600 workaround or however much a Ninja V costs is a bit shocking. Although, with the price of CFExpress cards, a Ninja V might be a bit of a money saver?1 point

Finally the type of test that everyone should be talking about, but nobody bothered doing! Richard Butler: "In just under two hours I shot 164 images, all in CRAW, some as parts of short bursts. I then switched to video mode to capture some 4K HQ footage and was confronted by 04:00 minute limit, despite plenty of card capacity. The overheat warning displayed immediately and, after shooting three sub-10-second clips the camera said it would only shoot for another 02:00 minutes." FUCKING SHIT!1 point -

Ok so I guessed at how long I've had my 5DIV, I guess from now on I should go look at my purchase receipt and scan that in to ensure I am more precise. We are talking about video here and until Canon provides CLOG3 for the R5 the DR statement is still accurate, but yes the context was video and the current R5's CLOG implementation. The Blackmagic Video Assist 12G is very intriguing. 1) greatly mitigates or resolves overheating 2) cheap SSD and external media recording 3) XLR inputs and quality audio recording 4) professional monitor 5) potential BRAW support (currently supports C300ii and Panasonic EVA1) The rumors about Canon considering BRAW would make a lot of sense here. I'd take this over the Atomos Ninja.1 point -
I've seen elsewhere users state CF cards just get warm from having them in a camera that's on, not even writing to them. Canon sell this very heavily as a hybrid, seamlessly switching between modes. The idea when you want to switch between stills / video you have to change out cards and attach an external recorder makes a mockery of that claim. As others have said, also puts more pressure on micro HDMI port, constant switching in and out. The design is poor. Period.1 point

I have my own domain name and so anything-whatsoever-I-can-think-of@mydomain all goes into my inbox. An upside of this is that I give every site it's own unique email address. ie, eoshd-com@ as an example. It is a regular occurrence that an email address suddenly starts getting spam. The site in question won't have sold my email address to anyone and the email address may never have been used after the registration process, so it wasn't intercepted by someone. It's because that site got hacked. Sites get hacked all the time. and worse, they don't tell people about it. They just sit silent because they don't want people to get upset or get the bad PR and mostly people won't notice because they give the same email address to everyone, so who can tell how your email address got onto a spam list. The answer is that I can tell. I wish this was a joke, but it's not.1 point

With an HDMI 2.1 cable, yeah I know. Is there a micro HDMI to full HDMI 2.1 cable? Besides, Canons own specs have suggested output is limited to 4K at 60p. No mention of 8K output. Unless fireware adds this down the road. Will the micro port handle 8K for RAW Or ProRes recording?1 point

i´m sorry, but the first image completely contratdicts everything you say about nikons design heritage. and the nikon 1 image shows clearly that there is no connection to the z design language. the z bodies handle like photographic tools. they did not forgoe their past like some competitors who flushed their aquired DSLR history down the drain. this is the rant of a spec nerd and not of a photographer or a videographer. the video quality that´s coming out of of the z cameras is totally fine and sufficient for the enthusiast. who wants absolute image quality will not look at hybrids anyway. as you yourself have shown there is no significant difference in image quality between 10bit recording hybrids today. this singling out and bashing of nikon that is all the fashion these last months is silly in my opinion.1 point
