EOSHD testing finds Canon EOS R5 overheating to be fake
Katrikura and 4 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Very much agree, it's a new tactic from Canon based on usability rather than limiting specs. They've realised limiting specs hurt sales and brand reputation. So it's the same thing in different clothing now. Make the high-end features unusable. Apparently $4000 is not enough for Canon and they want the full $15,000 from you if you want high-end specs AND usability. And this is from a company who wants us all to rush out and buy $2K RF lenses for our crippled $4K bodies?! They can fuck off.5 points -
This is some of the best footage I have seen from the camera. A7SIII colors and DR rival 16 bit linear RAW from F5/F55 from a few years ago, all of that in a 10 bit 4:2:2 codec: In the hands of a capable shooter, the lack of internal RAW is no limitation at all.4 points

Canon could have released a EOS R5 to compete against Sony A7R IV... for stills. It has the slightly soft 4K pixel binned mode like the Sony does, but in 10bit. That's not too shabby. Then, release an EOS R5 C, with all the video bells and whistles enabled and properly functional. For some strange reason they decided to go full beans with the 8K RAW and 4k 120p only to not let us use them! Marketing tick boxes only! Why bother engineering these features if they are not going to be usable by the intended customers? And how in any way would a mirrorless camera cannibalise sales of a $15,000 full frame C500?4 points -

Basically the timer kicks in whenever 8K or 4K HQ is enabled in the menus and there is a live-view feed on the LCD or EVF (even if it is hidden behind a menu overlay). That's probably just how they implemented the cripple clock in firmware. When the screen is off it probably disables the mechanism they are using to calculate run times... either by error, or on purpose to satisfy Atomos. That the scorching hot ambient temps and black alloy casing absorbing so much external heat don't impact the timer, has to tell you something!3 points -

One possible solution, will be to use a headless HDMI adapter and plug it into the HDMI port. These are basically a little plug that makes the camera think it has a HDMI recorder attached, then have a toggle in the @BTM_PixCDA TEK temp sensor monitor app that turns off the LCD image. It'll be interesting to see if this allows the camera to record internally for longer, but long term I see the only real fix being on Canon's side. It's up to them to step up to the table really.2 points -

I downloaded the footage by Jacques Crafford. First, thank you Jacques Crafford for sharing these footage so I can test them out. So I put it in Resolve, tweaked a little bit and used a color space transform. It took me about a minute or two. Here is the quick result. Of course this is far from a graded image, only a starting point. I have to say this is quite an improvement over the A7S and A7S2. People argue otherwise likely never use an A7S before because its color science is really really bad. I will not say this new color from A7S3 can rival Arri Alexa, but this is definitely a usable image, especially if you consider the codec is pretty solid so you can do quite a lot of adjustments without breaking it. Surely, color is subject so everyone can have their own opinion, but I feel like claiming these images are horrible may be a little bit exaggerated. Personally for me, although the color from this A7S3 may not be the best, it is totally usable and if one cannot make a good picture of it, he is the one to be blamed. If you think my quick result is very bad, probably it is my fault too.2 points

The recording time charts don't take into account the time spent in live-view or menus. So at some point during the first 40 minutes of the day, you will be looking at a 5 min limit in 4HQ instead... and then 0 mins. Unless you work like this: Shoot a 30 min continuous shot. Power down camera for 2 hours. Come back and shoot another 30 mins. Power down for 2 hours. Nobody works like this.2 points -
Ninja V Pre-Release Beta For Sigma FP And Fuji GFX100 ProResRAW
mechanicalEYE and one other reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
In good news for owners of cameras that don't cause internet rage wars, Atomos have announced v10.53 pre-release Beta version for ProResRAW on the Sigma fp and Fuji GFX100. Slight snag is the link in their tweet just goes to the usual Ninja V firmware download page where the new firmware or a sign up option to apply for it is nowhere to be seen ! I'm sure they'll sort it out though. If I ever get round to using a camera again for actually making images with rather than testing a product with it then I'll be really looking forward to trying this with the fp.2 points -

If this model retains at least a decent 10-bit 4K mode of some description, and vlog, well Canon could be a little sore after the R5 debacle 😅 https://www.l-rumors.com/confirmed-panasonic-will-soon-announce-the-new-s5-entry-level-full-frame-l-mount-camera I do wonder what this means for a GH6, if there is still one in the works or if full-frame is pretty much the Pana roadmap now... All the S5 needs really is to be a lighter, stabilised run and gun with their solid 150mbps 4k 10-bit and it'll sell a bunch.1 point

Let's not forget that regardless of IF or HOW it overheats, Canon is still to blame because they chose to botch the internal layout with no proper heat dissipation for DIGIC X. No heat pipe or thermal pad, no direct conductivity to the chassis. The cripple hammer is either that or the firmware. Take your pick. Personally, I think it's both!1 point -

Indeed, they kind of killed their 5D & R5 series for a lot of professionals. I know a lot of wedding photographers that will not buy it because it overheats and is not reliable enough. A lot of them do photo and video and are going/staying with Sony or Panasonic. They will certainly not buy the Cxxx series or RF lenses now.1 point -

It's really true. Or just charge an extra $1000 and put in a fan and have unlimited recording times. People would have bought it. I would have bought it and then probably would have bought a Canon cinema camera (the ones they are trying to protect) to go along with it once the RF versions are released. Instead, I think I'll stick with Panasonic for awhile.1 point -

They’ve put themselves in a box. I doubt it having better specs than S1 if it’s suppose to be entry level. FF 4K60p is a stretch unless they also add it via firmware to S1. Affordable L mount Lenses are still limited. They just released a “vlogging” camera that nobody really likes or wants. I have no clue why they are releasing a new model. Unless it’s a GX style FF camera, which would be appealing to some.1 point -

You are right about this Andrew, this happens on purpose. A pre-programmed sophisticated hammer. More a "bummer-hammer", as we are not so naive idiots. But I am not surprised at all, this was to be expected, Canon's usual business practices.... One of my friends has been servicing printers for ages. A few years ago my "all in one" Canon printer suddenly died with an error code. The strange thing was that the error code mentioned the printing head but not only printing, copying did not function either. I called my friend, he asked for the model number and how old it was. When I told him 6-7 years, he started to laugh. He explained, the cheap printers have app. 3 years, and the medium segment, like mine, have 6-7, then they just die. Actually a preprogrammed "suicide-code" kills them. Most printer manufacturer do something like this but Canon is the most brutal. Many years ago the printers just said "error code xx" but it became too obvious, so Canon has implemented hundreds of error codes, and nowadays one of them comes up randomly to create the obituary. Servicing the defect printer head, I mean the "printer head in coma", would cost more than a new printer. Just allowing the copy function to operate was not possible. Checkmate. The reason is well-known, greed. I have been in business for many years and personally, I go NEVER back to a company where I have experienced so immense lack of business ethic. Just think back to the previous Canon models with missing 24p.... Canon has been market leader for many years but I still can't understand, how a corporation can become so arrogant, they purposely annoy their customers in stead of trying to please them. Especially now, in this hostile business environment for the camera industry. But people are preordering these cameras, so we obviously need a lot larger economic crisis...1 point

90% of us here are NOT shocked about this R5 stuff. We have been watching the industry do this same sort of crap for 20+ years. Camera crippling is a necessity in the camera industry. Its a vital strategy to separate, split and divide camera models into various customer teirs. Without crippling, every company's fleet gets overlapped and consumer cannibalism goes wild. So yeah....if anybody is in the 10% "shocked" catagory,...then shame on you. I have to laugh as either you are a complete industry "noobie" or you literally just have NOT been paying attention whatsoever....not even a little bit! I posted at the beginning of the year that the R5 would have extremely limited recording restrictions due to a Cannot source that tipped me off to this. This was a calculated marketing decision, NOT a mistake in any way. Sadly.....camera crippling has served companies very well for 20+ years. It will still be here long after all of us are gone.1 point -
I can’t believe 80% of the internet are in disbelief with the truth. Some weird humans will invent the most non sense to say that no Canon didn’t cripple anything and did their best they could. L o L. We have a dozen proof they did not do their best by far with that overheating. Canon fucked up. Let’s see if they make it right now. Firmware update with less recording limit already rumored by CR. I have a very bad feeling that Canon will update their crippled software by allowing a few minutes more recording but still very long recovery and the same cripple timer, just to say « hey we listened ». With no real world change for us. Obviously they are not gonna remove the thing altogether or that would mean telling the public « we took everyone for a fool thinking it would never be discovered, sorry to be the dumbest company on this planet ». No chance with those Japanese. Jesus. We were so close with that R5. So close. Frustrating to say the least.1 point

Andrew, I've attached a screenshot of HQ, and Non HQ. Theres a visible difference. For me, mirrored display throws the overheat warning at 37 minutes, and shuts down at 42 minutes. Also note when my camera threw the overheat warning at 22 minutes while at idle, I had no card in camera just set to record HQ mode. Seems like you could get unlimited recording dependent upon battery life when screen is on power save. I have seen no overheat warnings here. Without card in slot, it shut down in 42 minutes ( screen was on ) With a Cfexpress card in slot, but recording to HDMI it seemed as if the card made no impact to the times as battery died first. ( Screen was off ) I'll try SD card.1 point -

Using Resolve studio here. Once I turned then into 25fps they playback real-time on my PC. Trying to playback at 100fps it dropped frames. But in a 25 or 24 timeline it worked. Time stretched or normal, works really fine. My setup is a Ryzen 1600 with a Radeon Rx570 4gb, 32gb ram. Very similar to some Macs. My system struggles with the Canon R5 h265, 100% CPU usage dropping frames, but not the Sony ones, 40-50% CPU. Even turning the R5 files into 24-25fps doesn't make any difference. But the Sony XAVC-I performed really close to prores, 25% CPU, and that is a great point for the A7s 3.1 point -

How about we turn the camera on, do nothing with it, leave it in the menus. Put it in the freezer. After 1 hour, see if the timer has ticked down to 0 mins of 8K. Who wants to see an OVERHEATED! SHUTTING DOWN! screen with frost on it?1 point -
if andrew is right, the big question that remains is why did they do it??? and why did they do it in such an excessive way? if the camera had a hardware flaw and they would do a lot of pr to downplay it i would totally understand that. but crippling a camera by firmware to a point where it becomes unusable does not make any sense. limiting it to protect cinema eos sales?, ok, limiting it to protect sales of the next model?, ok, but totally ruining it? development of this thing must have cost tons of money, and even if they wanted to protect cinema eos sales, there is still a bit of math do be done to understand whether this is reasonable by any means. cinema eos cams are pretty much a niche product and i don`t see why they would protect them at such a high cost? andrews findings are shocking, and if true, i`d really like to know the reason they did it? there are a lot of statements on here about how much of a scandal this is and how bad canon is behaving, and given the fact that canon is not a chinese two man brand run by lunatics makes me even more eager to get to know the "mechanics" behind this...1 point

Let's talk about Sony A7S III overheating
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to Cliff Totten for a topic
Message to Sony and Cannot: Please add a real time temp gauge to your R5 and S-III. A small, simple 5 dot heat meter line. (Looks like an audio level meter) have 2 green, 1 yellow 1 orange and 1 red colored dot. This gives people more warning that their camera is getting hot. The more you know BEFORE a shutdown the better. I'd rather know it comming in 10min than find out 30 seconds before! How hard would that EXTREMELY valuable information be to add to the display?1 point -
Sure. As mentioned it's shot with vintage glass on a cheap speed booster. Um, what else... "Natural" color profile, no tweaks, no color correcting. Auto-WB so you can see how it'll drift into strange colors every now and again. 4K Frame rate is 29,97 and I believe I was shooting with a 40 shutter speed. Did a few 1080 60p shots in there. I guess that's pretty much it. Focal Length is 50mm x 0.7. When I open that lens all the way to 1.4, it really fringes and halos. Pretty wild. I've also shot a bit now with my Olympus 12-40mm 2.8 Pro Lens. That's a whole 'nother look completely. Much more sharp and clinical. https://vimeo.com/path88/review/444427937/9888f03bd91 point
