Removing internal battery resets EOS R5 overheat timer
Jerome Chiu and 3 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I am absolutely not saying that someone who had an R5 could use a good old fashioned CR2032 battery eliminator in the camera then bring it out through the camera enabling them to provide a switchable power source to it to effectively remove/re-insert it without taking the camera apart each time they want to reset the recovery time. I'm absolutely not saying that. Someone else might say that. But, just to be clear, I'm not saying that at all, OK?4 points -

Just watched this and thought it was really interesting - I haven't seen this mentioned before anywhere. I've played with editing to music and was never sure if I should put an edit on the nearest frame before or after the beat, but never thought about moving the edit point deliberately away from the audio queue. It was an interesting aesthetic, even through YT compression. What did you see?2 points -
That is certainly in line with the sort of thing I'm not talking about. It's likely a smaller battery in the R5 so it would likely require a smaller version of what I'm sure we can all agree that I'm absolutely not talking about.2 points

No worries, I promise to keep it secret. No one will know it from my side. I can't say the same for the others here, I'm sorry (Cannot doesn't, but we will on their behalf, deal? ;- ) https://hackaday.com/2020/04/24/a-cr2032-battery-eliminator/2 points

You loose color information in log images in 8-bit codecs. The more DR here you are trying to accomplish the worse it will look. S log2 is really the limit for 8-bit and even then sometimes that's pushing it.2 points -
There will be a development announcement of it before the pre-order begins for the AFX so people can see which one of them - if any - will be more suitable for their use. Price and lead time is the benefit of the AFX as for some people the combination of additional focus tools it brings to the Pocket cameras might actually be all that they need and the second unit will be a couple of months behind. It is very, very different and whilst it is initially for the Pocket cameras it is a more universal product. As I say, both will be known before any pre-orders happen for the AFX so it will be easier to evaluate for individuals then before any commitments are made.2 points

Sony A7S III
LightShooter and one other reacted to Hangs4Fun for a topic
I agree, I will be playing around with that very thing as well. Base ISO for S-Log3 in the A7SIII is now only 640 and you can take it down as low as 160. And knowing that the A7SIII's strong point is low light and less noise in the shadows versus highlight protection like the Alexa is good at. I'm curious to try going really low in ISO with the A7SIII. That being said though, it also appears to have dual gain architecture. I am REALLY hoping that this is not just a pre-release thing, that will disappear in the final production models. I say that because, why the heck wouldn't Sony put dual gain architecture right towards the top of the feature set and even say it doesn't have dual gain? Clearly in the pre-release video tests, there is a significant improvement at 16,000. It is unmistakable that at 16,000 noise is decreased greatly. If this is the case, I am interested to try S-Log3 exposure a couple ways and see what results are better under different conditions. Will try exposing all the way down on ISO, as well as giving 16,000 ISO a shot. Just guessing until it's in my hands. I've already warned my family, they won't see me for a week or so sometime around Sept 24, lol.2 points -
What are you filming? Could you use telephoto primes? Can you go tripod/monpod instead of handheld? Remember if you go with MFT, you'll get extra reach! Easier to find affordable very long zooms then which are f2.8 Agreed. (and not just because you mentioned sound)2 points

maxmizer and one other reacted to UncleBobsPhotography for a topic
You need to prioritize. You can't have everything. It seems like your understanding of cameras is not that great, and in that case I would put off investing too much in cameras until you understand what you actually need. If you really need to get close to a subject while it's pitch dark, you should get a lens with a shorter zoom range and larger aperture. Learning how to use noise reduction properly is also much more affordable than quadrupling your ISO performance. An all-in-one 1" camera and putting the rest of your budget into sound equipment might be good. This is not at all what you asked for, but it might serve you well.2 points -

What really bugs me is when they say some company sent them the product but they are not sponsored and that we will get an honest review. It's like wtf. The whole reason your channel has relevancy is because these companies send you these products early for you to do your 'honest' review which consists of gushing over how awesome the product is except for one little flaw that's not a big deal. Let's be real, these guys cream all over themselves to exchange emails with companies like Sony and Canon and Apple and Samsung about new product launches and there is no way they can be objective at all regardless of whether they say its sponsored or not. Either they got the product early or they are building their channel up to get the product early. And you can't do that by burning bridges. So to mediate this conundrum they find themselves in they say they did not send the video to be checked. Doesn't matter. They are psychologically chained to make sure they keep these corporations happy so they can keep getting their emails and possibility of early product reviews. They keep the video 95% positive and then mention some weak point every one already knows while basically showing a 10 minute commercial of tracking shots of said product. They then every once in a while pick a product from a smaller company to trash or do a really honest review not concerned with a backlash from that company. The only exception is when the corporation releases a real stinker of a product and everyone knows which gives them cover to post an 'honest' review. These people are basically marketing mouthpieces and pretend like they are doing us a service when they are just basically a new cog in an overhyped consumerist economy.2 points -

"Math Class" on Baidu now has extensive infrared thermometer readings of the camera's mainboard with the back off, showing they correspond closely to the temperature reported in the EXIF data and don't rise above 64C. His next finding is that if you remove the internal battery it resets the so-called overheating limitations. So who is telling the truth now, Canon? You can view the most recent findings here by the user "Math Class" (Google translated) Read the full article on EOSHD: https://www.eoshd.com/8k/removing-internal-battery-resets-eos-r5-overheat-timer-are-canons-pants-now-completely-down/1 point -

On several occasions I have indicated that he will have to make a short documentary about this defective product, a product of the protection policies that Canon has with its line of film cameras. I see it difficult for Canon to apologize, since there is an army of complacent (or paid) youtubers and this audiovisual piece would remain for posterity, reminding us that we must be critical as consumers and showing how fanaticism for brands allows this type of bad practices. A short documentary that serves as an audiovisual memory.1 point

Here is another way to look at it: How much was the A7R1V when it came out ? - $3499 (has basic 8 bit 420 4k 24p, 1080 24/60/120 fps) How much was the 5d MK1V when it came out ? - $3499 (Cropped 4k 24p, 1080P 24/60 fps) How much is the R5 currently ? $3899 - So for the extra $400, the R5 does almost everything of what the cameras above do, PLUS you are getting - 4k 10 bit 422 internally , Unlimited 4k 24p 5.1 oversampled in super 35 mode, Unlimited normal 4k 24p which looks amazing once sharpened, Unlimited 4k 24p HQ over the atomos, minimum, restricted and somewhat useless - 8k, 4k HQ, 4k60/120Fps once the camera overheats. Decide if extra $400 is worth it. But as it is, it is still the only High MP camera that can do all of this and has no real competition. Before you compare it to the A7siii, that is a video camera and not a photo camera. Yes 12 mp is fine for photos and online content, but so is 1080p video.... 🤷🏽♂️ I agree the marketing of this camera was a total FAIL. And some of the conspiracy theories pointing to canons practices are surely questionable. I appreciate what Andrew is doing because at the end of the day it is still a win win for us if Canon does something about the overheating.1 point -

I found this by accident on my own. I got rid of Premier and learned Davinci Resolve in 1 week, but in that week it was just the basics. My very next project was a music video so within Davinci Resolve I did not know how to nudge the audio track or video clip by just one frame so a few cuts were off by a frame or two. During playback I was actually surprised how some of them looked better that way. In the end I ended up leaving some of them like that. I do think the "off center cut" as I call it does not work all the time. The contents of the clip, the type of song, and especially how close together the beats are will determine how effective this is so I use it sparingly even though I am aware of it. While experimenting I discovered that if there is a subtle underlying beat and it is close to where you want to cut with the primary beat it is better to make the cut on center with the primary beat otherwise it will look like you tried to synch with the underlying beat but missed the proper spot. I also have yet to find a time where cutting one frame late looks good.1 point -
TBH on the S1H I don't miss the AF now I'm used to it. I went back to a C200 a while back, and I was trusting it was AF, and it was actually slightly out through the whole interview. Now I always do that in MF too.1 point

Sony A7S III
LightShooter reacted to Hangs4Fun for a topic
I'm willing to bet the A7IV (and any new A7 from here out), is going to finally have 4:2:2 10bit. So starting with the A7SIII and forward, S-Log3 should be usable. Keep in mind if you publish to YouTube or somewhere similar, you can still get banding because YouTube and others are 4:2:0 8bit and have high compression. You would need to start using Vimeo or similar solution to keep from having the end consumption showing banding. Case in point, almost every A7SIII outdoor example footage, if you look at the sky, you can see really bad banding. This isn't from the A7SIII, it is from YouTube and it's 4:2:0 8bit. So, you may have high DR AND 4:2:2 10bit colors and S-Log3 let you squeeze as much DR out of your A7SIII, A7IV, etc as possible, but in the end if it is consumed on 4:2:0 8bit with high compression streamed to a smart phone, it can negate much of your hard work. If you don't mind banding in your A7III 4:2:0 8bit, S-Log3 can help a little, but again, don't forget about where it is going to be consumed.1 point -
It's time to stop fetishising Prores - h264 422 10-bit ALL-I and h265 422 10-bit ALL-I codecs are better than Prores at the same bitrate, and h265 doesn't have much advantage over h264 either, so you're better off with h264 because it's very friendly in post and shouldn't require transcoding. Vertical axis is better IQ, and horizontal axis is bitrate - read more here: Anyone who has ever watched their AF system focus on the wrong thing should know that AF isn't about how many dual pixels you have, when they're focusing on the wrong thing then your shot is still ruined. I switched to manual focus and have never looked back. Currently my GH5 is still kicking all these cameras asses, because of the firmware updates it got and these camera MIGHT get. You're all jumping at shadows - until these cameras either do (or don't) get higher bitrate ALL-I codecs then it's all conjecture. Panasonic have hinted very strongly that a GH camera is coming, and wether this is true or not doesn't really matter - some or all of these cameras will get firmware updates to hugely upgrade them, and if they don't then it will be because there's another camera that will come in and take a place higher up in the lineup. Chill and let the dust settle. Or, more likely, wait until all the options have even been put on the table, then let the dust settle, even just a little....1 point

Development Update - AFX Focus Module For PBC
A_Urquhart reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Thanks. The AFX is a multi-client BLE server in its own right so it can report the distance simultaneously to other units aside from the PBC. So there can be an option for an additional display only unit (or have the PBC in that mode if you don't want to use it to monitor camera settings) or it can be used with an app to enable you to use your own preferred display size.1 point -

The sad fact is that it's easier and cheaper for Canon to fix this problem with more marketing, rather than a recall. But we customers should remember such ethics and consider whether we want to be giving our money to a company that treats us in this manner. Peter McKinnon's last video on the EOS R5 was called: "Filmed this entire EOS R5 Video without it overheating..." And he's now been silent on the issue for a month, despite all the new revelations. So whenever somebody comes on here to defend Peter and others like him. Just remember where their loyalties really lie. To themselves and to the corporate entities. It isn't with you.1 point -

The problem is I don't think Canon is going to "fix" the issue since it was never really a problem for them. They probably intended to cripple the higher end video modes but got carried away. Canon Rumors is reporting that the rumored firmware is going to do the following: Addition of Cinema RAW light option to 8K recording Addition of CLog 3 Increased record time limits (but don’t expect a huge boost) Various bug fixes They are probably going to increase the record times to match the stated record limits that they published but not much more. The R5/R6 still won't be great for hybrid shooters since the published record limits were really short.1 point -

This is interesting. I haven't posted on my T4 recording torture test yet. Last weekend I tested 4k 24p recording times in my office at 79F/26C. I was able to get almost 2 hours out of the camera, ending the test when the battery died. I recorded for about 24 minutes in 4K (limited by the amount of space on my card) then messed around the menu system, recorded a minute or so in 1080, reformatted the card and then recorded about 74 minutes in 4K by restarting record each time it ended after timing out. During this time, I was also feeding signal to my Ninja v to monitor recording. OIS on my 17-55 was enabled, as was IBIS (but not boost mode if I remember correctly). The camera was positioned on my desk on a Ronin-S, so the stabilization wasn't actually needed. I'm not sure how much heat the IBIS generates if it's on but not actually needed. I had the screen flipped out to dissipate heat. The camera definitely got hot to the touch but didn't trigger an overheat warning or limit record times above the normal limit. After I put in a new battery and reformatted my card, I put on my new Speedbooster with an EF 50 1.4, switched to photo mode and took a bunch of jpegs of one of my dogs, who was sleeping on my office couch (photo below, just for fun). So, at least at reasonably warm indoor temperature overheating doesn't seem to be an overheating problem, at least not one that would cripple a reasonable video workflow. ~Two hours of actual record time on a shoot is pretty long. As I mentioned before, I got about 2 hours of total use time outside on a 90+ degree day recording external 4K plus internal 1080. I'll try to do an outdoor torture test soon, but I'm not sure how to set it up with monitor (because I'm chained to the computer until I finish editing a project for a client). So far, overheating on the T4 isn't going to hold me back. IBIS1 point
