My Canon EOS R5 recording 8K video 50 minutes straight
Daai and 4 others reacted to Electroholic Anonymous for a topic
I had to cut the 5th run of 17 short to 10 minutes, battery empty icon was flashing. Doing a 6th run with a fully charged LP-E6NH and letting the overheating timer crash and lock me out. Doing the JPEG immediately after. If it reaches 20 minutes, if it gives more we might surpass 100 minutes. 5th run also peaking at 62C. It's an all day 8K camera, people.5 points -

My R5 survived the 1 hour and 45 minute 8K IPB SD FAT32 recording test! Peaking at 62C exif from the end of the 3rd run to the end of the 6th run. Will the FW update allow us to run 8K IPB for more or less than 100 minutes at a time? I will present the exif temps shortly and send the data to Horshack.4 points -

After a 6 minute run just now, it gives me 15 minutes again. As I am writing this the R5 is recording a 15 minute run. Will report back in 15 minutes 😉 No, I have two 1TB Integral Ultima CFE cards, and one Sandisk 512GB card. The Integrals run colder by the way. None of those 3 gave me an error or other disappointing behaviour, ever, for over a month now with the R5, a month full of abuse and power interruptions, hats off to those cards, the R5, and you and the others coming up with the FAT32 idea. I paid 4900 euros for the camera and expected to be able to shoot at least 4K HQ with it as much as I can when placed preorder. I aknowledged that there could be problems with 8K video, but I was not worried because 4K HQ 10 bit 422 would be fine with me most of the time. And it turns out the cripple timer cripples also the 4K HQ. I think apologist attitude "oh yeah Canon has all the right" smells deeply rotten. I don't care what Canon thinks, they have ruined the video capabilities of the expensive camera I purchased and traded my 1DX mark II (which did not overheat even in 4K 60p) to. I expected the new camera to be better than the 1DX mark II in video. And it came with Jesus-specs that would show Sony who is the king of video. Then it turns out, after already paying the camera (had to pay in advance to actually get it), that it has timer that ruins all usable video modes. The low quality pixel binned 4K mode most definitely is not what I traded my 1DX mark II for. Because 1DX mark II was able to do high quality 4K all day long, no C-log, but it had EOSHD-C-log installed which was fine. With this timer, my choices are worse image quality than the camera it replaces or live with the timer I never expected to even exist. Canon has betrayed me as a customer. I am not so rich that it would be indifferent to me as a customer if I get fooled by a manufacturer that sells intentional lemons instead of products they marketed. Canon has no excuses to treat its customers like this. It is despicable. I have no reason to be kind and with apologist attitude towards Canon and than them for ruining my video shooting experience in contrast to the previous camera I had from them. I did not buy this camera for its 4K low quality mode. I could have bought Sony A7RIV instead, if I wanted a camera with pixel binned low quality video, high dynamic range sensor and high megapixel count for still photography. I bought the Canon instead because I expected it to perform better as a hybrid camera than the Sony A7RIV as it had all the things I had been wishing for: 10 bit video, raw video, full sensor readout, Canon DPAF, eye-AF etc. in the same package. It looked like the perfect camera for me. However, Canon completely ruined the video shooting abilities of this camera to category "not suitable for shooting video", unlike marketed, and unlike what I paid for. I will use any hack available to shoot video with my R5. And if Canon "fixes it" in the next firmware releases by removing these hack capabilities, I will never upgrade the firmware.3 points -
Canon EOS R5 so-called overheat timer defeated by a single screw in battery door
Emanuel and 2 others reacted to John Matthews for a topic
News just in: Canon is currently finding ways to create loops and bugs in R5's firmware to properly overheat at 20 minutes... code to keep running for two hours after. They've terminated the employment of the engineer responsible for choosing a heat-efficient, modern processor, allowing the R5's limitations to be bypassed. A spokeswoman for the company released this statement: "We deeply regret that some renegade customers have (illegally?) hacked the R5's abilities to record 8k footage and its limitations of a 20 minute recording every 2 hours. These customers are not in compliance with the user agreement and risk a non-functional device. We have addressed the problem and corrected the R5's firmware to perform as advertised." Unofficially, the companies spokeswoman, categorically criticized EOSHD.com for their lack of believing the R5's specifications at the time of release, despite Canon's best marketing efforts in the matter.3 points -

No need to wish! Last year a Panasonic rep I met (you'd recognize him from YouTube interviews on some pretty popular channels) legit told me, while showing off a then still in pre-production S1h at a local camera store, that panny employees do in fact frequently read EOSHD and other industry sites, not just for fun but actually as a part of their job, in order to follow discussion on their products and gauge consumer reaction. I even made a joke that I wanted his job, since I browse camera forums all day anyway, I'd love to get paid for it.2 points

About Super35/Aps-c sensor - I would vote for that or at least they could make 2 GH6 modifications with normal m43 and enhanced S35 sensor. I'd probably buy a whole set of Sigma primes for m43 (16, 30, 56) and they would all work as S35 glass. There is plenty of other 0.95 manual glass that was designed for APS-C, I want that too. Also there is an army of GH5 fans who love Panasonic for their features and ergo and waiting for GH6 to be announced to make their decesisions.2 points -

Thanks for the chart. It's good to have it in black and white that there's only a 6-8C increase in temps after 20 minutes. Certainly not enough to justify the shutdown (let alone a long lockout). And also interesting to see the temps are basically flat for the last 50 minutes after the first 50 minutes. I think if we are going to put credits on stuff by the way, make sure to include @BTM_Pix His app has been key to understanding the temperature status and EXIF temp.1 point -

I will try to upload the whole boring a7R4 video of this 100+ minute 8K IPB test now after a quick and dirty render. And about the FW update, I consider it riskier to update my FW then to run the R5 like this. Will they close this loophole, will they cripple my much loved superb Canon EF glass that has never ever worked better on any native body I owned, all to give RF an edge, in exchange for 20% more overheating time? Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
IronFilm reacted to MicahMahaffey for a topic
For me m/43 is just too small, More often than not when doing narrative work we usually end up in really tight spaces due to budget limitations and having a full frame FOV is necessary for capturing the whole frame. At least for the work I do. I switched from my A cam being a sony to now being a panasonic. Ive already been using manual focus on canon glass for years so the switch to pany was pretty easy. especially with their IBIS.1 point -
FW update to fix thermal issue coming tonight https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-firmware-update-coming-in-the-next-24-hours/ Obviously it's not like they will release many of them so the moment of truth is tonight. Tomorrow we will know if the camera is usable or not. Either they will go deeper in the same and shit on us with allowing something like 5min more recording and little shorter recovery (but overall still timer based), or they will make it right and make it non timer based but temperature based making this camera perfect or if they can't (because of poor thermal data access) then at least push the timer as much as they can according to extensive testing. From what we see in the test from Andrew and others, that camera should have no problem going to the recording limit of 30min and then recover in that time or less. Fingers crossed.1 point

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
Trankilstef reacted to Lux Shots for a topic
There are some advantages, as you have mentioned. But on the flip side of the coin, there are disadvantages not easily overcome. Event work in low light is a big one. Getting shallow DOF without f/.95 glass in another. If you are shooting controlled narratives, it may not be a big deal to you as you can always light your talent. But in event work, you gotta deal with what light is available. I have the Panasonic GH5S and the S1H so I currently shoot with both, but if the S5 checks enough boxes, I'll go full frame all the way.1 point -

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
Trankilstef reacted to MicahMahaffey for a topic
Honestly, I bought the s1 used "like new" for $1600 earlier this month. It came with v-log too! If the new s5 is $2000 (assuming) new then I still think the s1 was a much better buy. I like big camera bodies and it's one of the reasons I got an s1, although a small reason, it still mattered to me. I wanted a tanky daily driver work horse of a camera! Something with great battery life, a bright screen, big body, good evf, So after thinking about the s5, it honestly doesn't really sound like the camera I wanted anyway, the s1 literally is the camera I wanted, so I'm happy with my purchase. I learned I'm able to return my s1 if i want but I'm choosing not too. 4k 60p 10bit is neat, but I hardly even care about 4k 60p, even then, 8bit 60p looks fantastic! I still think the s1 is the nicer more professional camera overall and its used prices are so good that it wins against the s5 when it comes to cost. Again, assuming the s5 will be $2000.1 point -

Fantastic, that's a working solution for SD then. Canon might have removed the legacy FAT32 support starting with CFE since it's an easy technology inflection point to do so. Could I ask a big favor? Could you possibly run 8K recording for an hour, using battery pulls as necessary? Also, after you reach the hour could you immediate take a photo? I'll post a batch file that will extract the EXIF temperatures from all the files and put them into a .CSV file I can graph with Excel. Typing on my phone right now so don't have access to my computer this moment. Thanks again! The data rate for 8K is about 162 MB/s so you may need to copy the files halfway through so you don't run out of card space.1 point

I think as a paid customer you trusted them and gave them the benefit of doubt but they ruined that trust and gave you a very expensive subpar product so you have every right as their customer to voice your disappointment at this camera and their overall attitude towards the people who actually keep them in business. You should call up your local Canon dealer and give them a piece of your mind and also write Canon customer service and let them know how you feel about spending close to 5000 euros on a product they marketed for professional usage INCLUDING VIDEO but is completely and utterly broken.1 point -

The goal isn't to save the parameters...the goal is to *not* save them 😀 It's the entire basis of the workaround for the timer element of the R5's thermal algorithm. Btw, you don't have to turn off the camera to save the parameters. Taking a photo or a video or moving the mode dial between stills/movie mode saves them as well.1 point

It's always laike this with all Canon camera. If you lose the power, all parameters are not saved. But here is what you should do. Put your camera parameters as you like until you are ready to shoot. Turn off the camera with the power switch (The recording parameters as shutter speed, aperture, iso,...) are saved there Turn on the camera. Record and drop the battery when you like. When you put again the battery, the parameters will be the same as last turn on/off sequence.1 point -

The original has quite a lot of blue in it, and the reference images have no objects in them that are blue and all the colours in the reference image are in completely the opposite direction in terms of colours. You can pull a key and neutralise out the blues, but then you end up with some salmon tones, which you then need to fix, and in the end you end up with a background that is bland and may as well have been desaturated. The reference images all have darker green foliage in the background, the footage has a bright orange/blue city in the background.1 point

My Canon EOS R5 recording 8K video 50 minutes straight

Quite frankly after seeing these tests - this is just an incredible hybrid camera engineering feat. I get why its crippled, but holy hell Canon absolutely smashed all competitors with this. You can bet Nikon is picking this apart to see how they brought it all together. If it remains artificially crippled I'm staying far away from anything Canon. A simple firmware fix can make this the beast Canon originally advertised. Unleash the beast and I'm back in. Chris1 point -
I can't remember if I already posted this, but we shot this with mostly S1. Couldn't believe the quality of the image. Truly amazing.1 point

Wish I could find a ACES transform for this camera. Some V-LOG shots manually graded. Lens was the Panasonic 24-105 F4 Also if anyone wants to know the H&Y Variable MRC HD ND+CPL Filter is what I used for these. It's excellent and color neutral, if a bit fiddly to use. I REALLY hope Panasonic steps up their AF game next time around.1 point

Man I don't even want to ask how long it took to model animate and render that stuff... I started in the Late 90's On Newtek Lightwave 3D then moved to 3D studio Max... But could never Get my Legs in MAYA (I really dislike Maya. Perhaps if I learned it first but back then it was a $15,000 Program and you had to have a $10,000 computer to run it!) What did you use for this? I see by the credits only about 4 people worked on this. If I had to make something I would probably use Cinema 4D + After effects. Any How: Verrry Cool.
Very Cool Nodding GIF from Verycool GIFs
https://tenor.com/view/very-cool-nodding-gif-78085081 point
