  1. I updated the firmware this morning then repeated old external test. Recorded 4K HQ externally for over an hour with no card in camera. After 1hr 16 minutes passed I stopped the external recording, and inserted CFexpress card. Once the R5 booted back up the counter said 20 minutes. Showed 25 minutes after shut down for less than 5 minutes. So it seems the external recording is still good.

  3. Someone suggested that the overheat icon should be changed with a middle finger on a future firmware... I love this idea!🖕

  4. After this firmware update, we've got a good indicator that Canon is not going to open this camera up for any serious video work. It's really meant for casual video work in which a hybrid shooter may want to get a few nice video clips. From a video perspective, there's no way would I use this camera for any serious, professional work. I've 100% made up my mind to stick with Sony for what I do. I thought I might go back to Canon and use the R5 for both my stills and video work but I've seen enough from Canon to know that they have not changed their tune. So...A9 for stills, A7SIII for video. Onwards!

  5. According to TechRadar, the firmware doesn't address the overheating and actually engages it when using an external monitor: "Canon has today released the EOS R5’s first firmware update and it’s available to download from the camera maker’s regional websites around the world. However, if you were expecting the firmware to improve on the current video limitations the R5 suffers from (as previous reports indicated it would), you’re going to be sorely disappointed. The EOS R5 firmware version 1.1.0 only brings a couple of minor upgrades – it improves image stabilization for video recording, while also improving the combined stability of the camera’s in-body image stabilization system when paired with a stabilized lens, specifically the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM telezoom. According to Canon, the update also ensures that the overheat control on the EOS R5 doesn’t get disabled when using an external monitor or recorder. It will also improve the accuracy of the video time display when recording several short clips back to back. None of these are quite what we were expecting but Canon has said there’s more to come."

    Sony A7S III

@Trek of Joy I was not aware of Brandon before so thanks for the heads up. Very impressed. I have never been much of Sony fan before but this unit and the lens options available are ticking just about every box except... Price I’d prefer 20 megapixies I’d prefer a tilt screen None of the above are deal-breakers however. Otherwise that XH2 had better be damn good and available by end of March 2021 otherwise for only the 3rd time in my 20 year professional career, I will be switching. Unlike those folks that switch 3 times in a year. And then actually admit it in a specially made YouTube video...

  7. I have seen this argument "for" FF35 for many many years, and it is just ridiculous and wrong to say "I need a full frame FoV". All it proves is you made poor lens selections going into the project. Did you have a 12mm? How about a 10mm or 8mm? All of these are easily accessible and even quite affordable. Don't blame the tools for user errors. Because you can get almost any FoV that you wish with MFT! From the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 (or even wider if not going rectilinear, there is a 2.3mm fisheye lens for MFT!) to the Olympus 150-400mm f/4.5 (or even longer!!). When did one of us last need greater than 800mm FF35 or wider rectilinear than 15mm FF35? (that's the same as 10mm S35!!)

  13. So, in the age where mirrorless is king, Canon's best option for video (not counting their cinema cameras) is a DSLR aimed primarily at sports shooters. You couldn't make this s**t up if you tried.

  14. I use the 17 f1.2 a lot. The lens is great and I love the manual focus. The only thing that bugs me is that my Canon 40mm f2.8 is 1/3 of the weight, 1/6 of the price, is sharper, and gives me pretty much the same field/depth of view on a full frame Canon. It doesn't take away the fact that the Olympus on my GH5 currently gives me the best video quality I'm able to produce, but makes me hesitant to buy more Olympus lenses since I've got the R5 ordered. 17. The blind zealotry of this place reminds me reduser. The first review Chris and Jordan posted has overheating in the title and is heavily highlighted in the video. *You* are the one spitting lies here. This is forum is the *only* place I consistently see hate directed towards Chris and Jordan, who by most accounts are actually good guys. I’m all for making fun of the Northrups and all the types like that, but give me a break.

  18. I agree, when I got my GH5 I did a lot of research and discovered the Voigtlander 17.5mm f 0.95 which has become my favorite video lens of all time. The shallow DOF that you can achieve on that lens is incredible and it turned my GH5 into a lowlight capable camera. For real estate and landscape I got the Olympus 7mm-14mm which nicely aligns with my Canon 16-35mm FF lens. The main thing I dislike about the GH5 is the highlight rolloff...I'm not sure if it is so bad due to the sensor size or some other factor. I know my C200 with it's S35 sensor has incredible highlight rolloff. If the bad highlight rolloff is due to the sensor size then I would agree a larger sensor would be better but still would not need FF. If it is just due to the sensor in the GH5 then there is hope for a MFT sensor with better highlight rolloff. The MFT size has plenty of benefits over FF such as better battery life, lighter weight, no overheating issues, better rolling shutter control, much smaller lenses, easier for gimbal work, etc. This is why I wish Panasonic were announcing a GH6 right now instead of an S5; a GH6 with 4K120 and better highlight rolloff is far more interesting to me vs investing in yet another camera and lens system. I have yet to be in a situation where my GH5 simply could not get a job done that could have been completed with a FF sensor. The one place though where I will always prefer my 5DIV over the GH5 is photography.

  22. I don’t know what to think. 96min of short 4k120p clips is good enough for me on one hand, but overall 5min improvements in most codecs and mostly the very little improvement in recovery is a joke. Also I use the camera for photo between video shots and stills use kills the recovery. So I am gonna wait for some testing but first impression for this FW update is go f*** yourself Canon.
    2 points
  23. Thanks for sharing. It's look like they tweaked the recovery time and add new functionality to the infamous counter that now include the length of previous recording in the balance. If you shoot short clip,s you can shoot more of them (from 22 to 96 now in his testing) Recovery time is about 2 minutes wait for 1 minute recovery, or one minute wait for one minute recovery inside a fridge. Still a bit far from the graph I can see on this post threat. Recovery temperature look way faster than this. Bye the way; 0 apology from Canon so far. The best sentence is: "We have and will continue to be transparent about recording limits for the EOS R5" 😂 Like you can't shoot any HQ mode after 60 picture during an hour inside a fridge... Transparency? Please Canon, let me know where in your manual you explain this? The max recording time is reset if you remove the battery cause we don't check temperature at boot but be assured we are very conservative on temperature management.

  25. Thanks for the chart. It's good to have it in black and white that there's only a 6-8C increase in temps after 20 minutes. Certainly not enough to justify the shutdown (let alone a long lockout). And also interesting to see the temps are basically flat for the last 50 minutes after the first 50 minutes. I think if we are going to put credits on stuff by the way, make sure to include @BTM_Pix His app has been key to understanding the temperature status and EXIF temp.

GH5S has enough lowlight Performance for what I’ve needed it for. So If GH6 can match that but also give me 20MP+ stills, and 4K120p, 6K24p, and at least 10-bit 420 everything...I’d be ecstatic. I was very surprised when using it in a trip to Senja, Norway. Shot 8000 ISO, candlelight only, with the 12-35 f2.8 In HLG. Did de-noise in post on a few shots. If I would have had my 10-25mm f/1.7 Which is permanently attached to my camera, I could have dropped ISO from 8000 to 4000 or even 3200 which is a piece of cake for the 5S. Use a voighlander 0.95 and I’m not sure you would have problems with much of anything besides moonlight only or pitch black. Shot northern lights no problem with built-in time lapse feature. Although it was my first time and I learned a lot! Next time I will shoot a RAW sequence and assemble in post. ISO performance from the A7SIII is amazing but for me is quite niche, really.

  27. I paid 4900 euros for the camera and expected to be able to shoot at least 4K HQ with it as much as I can when placed preorder. I aknowledged that there could be problems with 8K video, but I was not worried because 4K HQ 10 bit 422 would be fine with me most of the time. And it turns out the cripple timer cripples also the 4K HQ. I think apologist attitude "oh yeah Canon has all the right" smells deeply rotten. I don't care what Canon thinks, they have ruined the video capabilities of the expensive camera I purchased and traded my 1DX mark II (which did not overheat even in 4K 60p) to. I expected the new camera to be better than the 1DX mark II in video. And it came with Jesus-specs that would show Sony who is the king of video. Then it turns out, after already paying the camera (had to pay in advance to actually get it), that it has timer that ruins all usable video modes. The low quality pixel binned 4K mode most definitely is not what I traded my 1DX mark II for. Because 1DX mark II was able to do high quality 4K all day long, no C-log, but it had EOSHD-C-log installed which was fine. With this timer, my choices are worse image quality than the camera it replaces or live with the timer I never expected to even exist. Canon has betrayed me as a customer. I am not so rich that it would be indifferent to me as a customer if I get fooled by a manufacturer that sells intentional lemons instead of products they marketed. Canon has no excuses to treat its customers like this. It is despicable. I have no reason to be kind and with apologist attitude towards Canon and than them for ruining my video shooting experience in contrast to the previous camera I had from them. I did not buy this camera for its 4K low quality mode. I could have bought Sony A7RIV instead, if I wanted a camera with pixel binned low quality video, high dynamic range sensor and high megapixel count for still photography. I bought the Canon instead because I expected it to perform better as a hybrid camera than the Sony A7RIV as it had all the things I had been wishing for: 10 bit video, raw video, full sensor readout, Canon DPAF, eye-AF etc. in the same package. It looked like the perfect camera for me. However, Canon completely ruined the video shooting abilities of this camera to category "not suitable for shooting video", unlike marketed, and unlike what I paid for. I will use any hack available to shoot video with my R5. And if Canon "fixes it" in the next firmware releases by removing these hack capabilities, I will never upgrade the firmware.

  30. Hahaha. I was lost too. I sent you a PM about it. Something was going on with the Sanddisk card I was using. The R5 gave some read errors a couple times, I reformatted, and it would work on and off but it was a really old card. I switched back to my Prograde cards and everything was fine. I don't know honestly will test more to solidify all this.

  31. It's really is amazing that we live in a time where cameras are as good as they are. There's something for everyone 🙂 Even though I love big images and big cameras, I'm always carrying around my a6300 in my coat pocket because it's literally pocket sized and I love that.

  32. You're in your right : ) I for once traded my yet new 5DII used mainly for motion picture and still part of my collection for a GH1 somewhere between the streets of Ljubljana and Zagreb because of form factor. Used mostly for stills, yeah, go figure! : D Never looked back. Love small devices, glass and pocket size included, hence my MFT love as well < 3

  33. Those are beautiful images and I know full frame isn't honestly needed. especially not for drones. But I will say my mavic 2 pro sensor is as small as id go on a drone. I think the reason I'm obsessed with full frame stems from my love for 70mm and IMAX. I love full frame because it gets me that much closer to an IMAX "feel". As well as generally being more convenient. I will say this though, for any live events like concerts or weddings. I almost always go super 35 or MFT. For most (not all) narrative projects full frame is just aesthetically pleasing to me, you can get a wide angle view without getting that wide lens look. This is even more true for 70mm. God.. I want a 70mm camera... Im a video arts teacher and my philosophy is any camera can tell nearly any story. So truthfully it doesn't matter. I just love big images 🙂

  34. I don't remember Canon being particularly keen on a trusted journalist from the BBC getting a grip of them when they launched the EOS-R !
    1 point
  35. Absolutely. Any time you see a log profile with a higher than base ISO (400 in the case of GH5 V Log L versus 200 in the regular profiles) the camera is "underexposing" and then lifting to give more highlight headroom. So aside from differences in the contrast curve (which might crush highlight detail in regular profiles), you will also get one more stop before clipping with V Log L. It has 4 stops above middle grey and many more below. And you can trade clean shadows for more highlights by intentionally underexposing further and lifting in post. So it's worth it IMO
    1 point
  36. A 10mm has a very drastically different look than 20mm. Infact, a 10mm 2.8 lens on a m/43 body ends up being a 20mm 5.6 "look". Which is much different in visual style. Which affects EVERYTHING about how the story is perceived by the audience and their emotional response. So in order to capture the shot the way I imagined it, Its a struggle. If not impossible. More often than not, id just scrap my original vision and work with what I have. When using full frame, I find im MUCH less likely to end up in this type of situation. If all I had was a M/43 camera then id use it and I doubt most people would see a big difference. But If I had the choice, I wouldn't go smaller than 35mm full frame. I used to exclusively shoot super 35mm with M/43 as B cams and never even considered larger formats. I was happy with super 35 and mft cameras together. So obviously I get what everyone is saying. Full frame is not "needed" but neither is 4k. Neither is good low light, neither is a fast PC. You can technically make a film with a phone and still have a great image. If all you have is a mft camera then don't hesitate to use it. I want to clarify that just because you use a m/43 camera doesn't mean you'll get low res or bad low light. Because let's be honest, that's kind of irrelevant now with how good camera have become. I'm just saying that if I had to choose between 1080 or 4k id choose 4k 99% of the time. just like id pick full frame. But part of picking tools is picking the ones that help get your vision or your clients vision captured the quickest with the least amount of compromises made. For me, full frame does that. So do things like really good IBIS, really good low light, high resolutions for reframing and so on. Funny enough I don't use auto focus for anything except gimbal work, even though it can speed things up, Its just not my style. One day I plan to buy a medium format video capable camera and then who knows, I might think full frame is too small 😉

  38. I don't see why you have to struggle with a 10mm lens and not with a 20mm one on FF : D I sincerely don't. Pardon me but looks like mere prejudice and misconception going on here. There's nothing limited on MFT, on the opposite, it is a much more affordable format and you have many more glass options. Codecs?!! WTH this should be or actually is connected with the sensor format?? Only resolution can justify a larger sensor size, not else! Not even low light today. E :- )

  39. I dislike this footage - the framing makes the widescreen aspect inhibiting, since the videographer constantly cuts off peoples heads, and I do not like how the particular discolorations ( we call it "grading") chosen in post affect skin tones. And, videos of cute kids are second only to pet videos in terms of cuteness. But, so what? This will have zero influence on whether I like the camera. How on earth could a particular video that is heavily graded and uses a very special-type lens convince anyone that the camera is somehow better than the many other cinema contenders less than $10,000? Of course, this phenomenon of judging a camera by one video is all over this forum and many others devoted to equipment. I bet the videographer (once he masters framing with an anamorphic lens better (I get it that it could be on purpose)) could make a cinematic-looking video from a Sony RX100, under the same lighting conditions. Of course, if one is for some other reasons set on acquiring this camera, this video (if you actually thought it was good) would reaffirm your interest, since it does show what it can produce. It just does not speak to whether another cheaper, more-user-friendly, more-versatile camera could do better, but then again the scenes have limited dynamic range (wonderful diffuse light that always helps), there is lots of out-of-focus areas (and subjects) and the lens, as has been said, matters a lot. Just a thought (my quasi-rant could be applied to any posts about cameras, so I do not mean it as a criticism of the Komodo). There is a sophisticated crowd here, so I am surprised to see this behavior, again and again.

  40. DEVELOPMENT UPDATE AFX has five user selectable focus transition modes. When the transition mode is set to Off, no transition is applied and the AFX snaps immediately to the new focus point. When the mode is set to 1,2 or 3 then an increasing preset length of transition is applied from the current focus point to the new focus point. The final mode is called Natural and applies a transition that is based upon the distance between the current and new focus points meaning that the greater the distance the longer the transition. Focus transition mode is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes.

  41. It works! 15:00 again and the R5 is now recording its second 15 minute run. I am policing the outside and card slot temps, colder than with CFE and RAW, but that should not be a surprise. We'll see whether I am brave and foolish enough to let this abuse carry on for a full hour, we will find out within the hour 😉 162MB/s?? Peak rate? It's 680Mbps, so should be 85MB/s. 47 seconds for a 4GB chunk also give 85MB/s. I need to re-format the cards between runs, because on the first recording start, the R5 gave the card slow error after 10 seconds. I immediately restarted the recording. So let's see. I have two 128GB and one 256GB UHS-II cards that are fast enough for 8K30 IPB. 8 minutes into the second recording on the 256GB microSD everything is fine and dandy still, after the first card slow message. Sandisk 128GB is formatted and ready to go.

  42. After a 6 minute run just now, it gives me 15 minutes again. As I am writing this the R5 is recording a 15 minute run. Will report back in 15 minutes 😉 No, I have two 1TB Integral Ultima CFE cards, and one Sandisk 512GB card. The Integrals run colder by the way. None of those 3 gave me an error or other disappointing behaviour, ever, for over a month now with the R5, a month full of abuse and power interruptions, hats off to those cards, the R5, and you and the others coming up with the FAT32 idea. Thanks a lot!

  43. Still no luck on CFexpress... My 2 years old 256GB Adata UHS-II V90 275MB/s microSD (with adapter to UHS-II SD size, of course) also works brilliantly in 8K IPB 680Mbps! Below a successful attempt to record 6 minutes of 8K30p, that yielded 6 MP4 files of 47 seconds each and a yet unrecoverable DAT file of around 20 seconds. Thanks Jn and Horschack!!!

  47. Customers like Karolina were deliberatly misled by Canon's marketing. It was sold front and centre as a 'professional' hybrid camera and focused very heavily on the video capabilities. Yet if you listen to the fan boys it's like none of this ever happened and canon can 'do what they like'. It's pretty disgusting given people have shelled out thousands of their hard earned in good faith. If you dare to point any of this out, as Andrew and others have done, you come under sustained personal attack! The fan boys have a lot to answer for.

  48. I think as a paid customer you trusted them and gave them the benefit of doubt but they ruined that trust and gave you a very expensive subpar product so you have every right as their customer to voice your disappointment at this camera and their overall attitude towards the people who actually keep them in business. You should call up your local Canon dealer and give them a piece of your mind and also write Canon customer service and let them know how you feel about spending close to 5000 euros on a product they marketed for professional usage INCLUDING VIDEO but is completely and utterly broken.
