I've just published a utility that allows for the automation of camera functions on newer Canon cameras like the R5/R6. It can be used to automate the thermal tests. Here's my thread on Dpreview with all the details: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/643072123 points

Holy shit, I thought that the scales were wrong, played with the file in Gimp but they are right. Made a VERY crude size comparison with the GH5 (got a size comparison between the S1 and GH5 in Camerasize, and used the S1 mount as size reference - sorry for the quality) and...looks like that it is even smaller than the GH5.3 points -
Man definitely looked tempting, those Canon overheating gave me a huge pause.3 points

There is also one feature I've been dying to see - a big 4.5-5 inch flip out screen. And a fuckin bright one. The never released Sharp prototype of 8k camera nailed it.3 points -

Get a Speedbooster? I'm using the Pocket4k (also M43 sensor) on jobs as a B Camera next to FX9's, Alexa Mini's, C300's, UMP G2's etc and haven't heard any complaints either on set or from post. DP's have often commented on how nice the P4K image looks. There are so many great lens choices from native anamorphic's to easily adapted full frame and cine lenses and everything in between. I actually really like the M43 format for video capture, it's extremely versatile although if stills was my main game, i probably would go larger.3 points -

Yep, got the leaked size / weight of the S5, compared to the GH5: GH5 - 138.5x98.1x87.4 mm (camera body only, excluding protrusion) - weight 724 with battery and sd card), 645g body only S5 - 132.6 x 97.1 x 81.9mm (excluding protrusions) - weight 714g (with battery and sd card), 630g body only2 points -
Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating timers, workarounds, and Magic Lantern

It's just that Canon knew they couldn't get away with overheating bullshit on the 1D X M3 which is sold on the premise of cast iron reliability to news organisations, sports photographers, agencies and journalists.2 points -
After all the drama about the R5 I've surmised some things: The "R" line is more of a toy for video than anything else. Time and time again we've seen the company push users to dedicated (and expensive) video solutions. Beggining with Canon's 5DM2 we lived through different models with some kind of video crippling: lower resolution, noisy mic inputs, and a hard recording limit. Despite all this, people bought a Canon DSLR for reliabilty and lens selection. Lens selection was adressed quickly for RF users with good and expensive glass. However, they are losing their "trustworthyness". The R5 wil NEVER replace the tank-like 5D. Never, not 5 or 10 years from now. The damage is done. Was it Canon's true intention to replace the 5D with the R5 by way of an "umbrella effect"? I'm having doubts. No manager worth his salt would have released this fiasco product. Especially not a Japanese one working at Canon. Not one that damn well knows the brand represents (boring) reliabilty. Maybe the "R" line is more of a "moonshot product". Aim high. Fail fast. Ride the mirroless wave, but always differenciate between the photo and cinema lines.2 points

I hope this is priced well. Might be a good replacement for my GH5, but I don't want to spend a lot on what would-be a supplement to my Pocket cameras.2 points

No it doesn't. I think your mind is allowing you to see things here.. You're probably confusing aesthetics with the type of shots that 70mm are often used for. Christopher Nolan loves 70mm, but on a small screen, its only in aspect ratio that leads you to see the differnce when he cuts between the 2 formats. Its the same people who say they love the fullframe look. I've worked with fullframe and most of the time, there is no difference when cut with smaller sensor shots. Only in cases of extreme depth of field at some angles can you see the effects of using fullframe.2 points -

No disrespect to EOSHD, but 70mm sensor size? If you "need" this, I don't know why you're here. That's for high-end cinema. You're a video arts teacher... what level are your students? I'm sure you know this, but images don't get "bigger" with sensor size; that comes with the distance between the screen and your projector and usually this is fixed. I think it's important to distinguish between your needs and pure GAS.2 points -

Correct. Shooting BELOW 6400 ISO is 98% of use cases. But I usually shoot (75% of the time) at whatever the native ISO is (640 ISO for GH5, if I remember correctly?). Even with the S1H, I almost never go above 4000 ISO.2 points -
I have seen this argument "for" FF35 for many many years, and it is just ridiculous and wrong to say "I need a full frame FoV". All it proves is you made poor lens selections going into the project. Did you have a 12mm? How about a 10mm or 8mm? All of these are easily accessible and even quite affordable. Don't blame the tools for user errors. Because you can get almost any FoV that you wish with MFT! From the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 (or even wider if not going rectilinear, there is a 2.3mm fisheye lens for MFT!) to the Olympus 150-400mm f/4.5 (or even longer!!). When did one of us last need greater than 800mm FF35 or wider rectilinear than 15mm FF35? (that's the same as 10mm S35!!)2 points

It's not standard today. But who buys a camera today without looking for how it may fare in the future? ZCam, Kinefinity, RED and Alexa all have full frame either released or in the queue. Additionally, the S1 series being hybrid cameras truly needed full frame for better photography performance. The nice thing is, you can still use your S35 glass with no problem, and get the look you've come accustomed to, with the option to graduate to full frame look in the future. It's nice having options!🌞1 point -
The more I see, the more I like. Only 2 questions really remain for me and those are; what is the AF going to be like and also I assume it’s a true hybrid and it is easy to flip between (and remember) different stills & video settings. All will be revealed next week I guess...1 point

Since you can't download version 1.0, it's not possible to downgrade. Once 1.2 arrives, we will know if downgrade (to 1.1) is still possible. But I guess they can always block it if they really want to. Biggest danger is if they ever disable or protect the UART port on the camera. If they do, there is no peaking inside.1 point -

herein2020 reacted to hyalinejim for a topic
Absolutely. Any time you see a log profile with a higher than base ISO (400 in the case of GH5 V Log L versus 200 in the regular profiles) the camera is "underexposing" and then lifting to give more highlight headroom. So aside from differences in the contrast curve (which might crush highlight detail in regular profiles), you will also get one more stop before clipping with V Log L. It has 4 stops above middle grey and many more below. And you can trade clean shadows for more highlights by intentionally underexposing further and lifting in post. So it's worth it IMO1 point -
I don't see why you have to struggle with a 10mm lens and not with a 20mm one on FF : D I sincerely don't. Pardon me but looks like mere prejudice and misconception going on here. There's nothing limited on MFT, on the opposite, it is a much more affordable format and you have many more glass options. Codecs?!! WTH this should be or actually is connected with the sensor format?? Only resolution can justify a larger sensor size, not else! Not even low light today. E :- )1 point

Baseless/clueless/nonsense indeed ; ) There's nothing crippled on MFT, as matter of fact, we cannot say the same on FF side today... LOL ;- ) To be straightforward... with the sensor used on GH5s/P4K, not even to justify the sensor size to achieve low light performance. Coupled to fast glass, DOF applies too, so what is left? Only the price of the cameras and glass, that's it. The same way we have a defective offer on the new toy just arrived: strictly commercial reasons.1 point -
