Fuji GFX100 Review – the ‘mini Alexa 65’ goes to a Formula One test session

To be fair Kye, the cheaper Zhongyi Mitakon f0.95 lenses for M43 are not THAT bad and neither is the Kipon Handevision 40mm 0.85 (though that is expensive) The Kaxinda (never heard of it before and it may just be one of the others rebadged) 25mm 0.95 is an unknown quality to me, The SLR Magic 25 0.95 is probably the Mitakon altered slightly. I do think the voigtlanders are nice though!2 points

The super-rare "Baby Kowa" 2x Anamorphic-8 adapter...WOW!
Sebastien Farges and one other reacted to Chronoscope for a topic
Designed for super8 cameras....the smallest 2x scope out there. And believe it or not? This thing is superior to the much-drooled-over baby hypergonar. Significantly so. I own two baby kowa 2x's, and one baby hypergonar....all of them are in near-new condition. The hypergonar was practically "New Old Stock" shape. Anyway, here's a couple pics of it mounted tucked inside a Rapido FVD8a, along with a screengrab of fellas on the porch talking. Also some pics from around the net of what the baby kowa looks like by itself (since mine are mounted in rapido FMJ, dont feel like removing right now) Shot not lit or anything...just stuck a camera there and recorded a bit; GH5 was on Natural profile, in 4:3 "4k anamorphic" mode (3328x2496), ISO 800. Taking lens is a Canon nFD 50mm f1.8, mounted on a 0.71x Zhongyi speedbooster. Aperture was set at 2.8 (on the lens). Yup...the baby Kowa is able to cover 50mm at around APS-C/S35, with no real vignetting/portholing on corners/sides. The sides have been cropped to achieve 2.35, but the cropped portions were fully visible. Of course...such coverage requires careful choice of taking lens, with a small front element that is very far forward so kowa rear lens can be very close. The flares are soft, understated, and beautiful...pinkish purple. I'll upload a test clip showing that off as soon as I get a moment today.2 points -
My desk setup. Love hard buttons and jog/shuttle shuttle wheels for edit and the color wheels being physical. Just makes editing and grading more fun for me. For those considering I would AT LEAST get a jog wheel, so nice to go through the timeline with it and very hard when I'm on another computer without one.2 points

BMPCC 4k - speedbooster + EF or native MFT?
noone and one other reacted to A_Urquhart for a topic
Generally, the quality of a lens is better in the centre and usually gets softer toward the edges. Using a straight through adaptor with no glass means you are using more of the centre of the lens which, in theory, is a good thing. Saying that, Metabones claim that using a speed booster actually increases sharpness and clarity but i doubt you will see any difference in reality. I really wouldn't worry about the image quality. The 18-35 1.8 is a fantastic lens with or without the speed booster. Having the two adaptors is kinda like having two lenses.2 points -

I bounce on and off YT. Never followed anyone, probably never will. I know channels exist with lots of info relevant to whatever you may like, but paying close attention to any of them seems like a chore. Besides, it's a destination, on the popular side, mostly for those that are easily influenced. The ones pulling cash on the platform are not called "influencers" for nothing. Pop culture is never as interesting as it pretends to be. It's not designed to be that way. And exceptions tend to prove the rule.2 points -

Ian Edward Weir and one other reacted to tweak for a topic
I've had 8 Kowa-8s (also 8Bs in there). Sample variance is huge. Flares can be all different colours, sometimes matching front to back, sometimes not. Some are much sharper than others even when tuned (normal with all scopes). I kept these in the shadow a long time, but when I first stumbled on one I couldn't find even one picture of one on the internet, or even a single word that they existed, it felt like digging up treasure. I've made some videos with them, but prefer the isco 8s too be totally honest (although how wide a kowa8 can go if you know the right taking lens is pretty amazing). This whole film I shot with Kowa-8s -2 points -

I do not think that all are so dramatic. There is a huge m43 user base, and the smaller sensors have advantages, while m43 being in the special territory of not that small, and not that big, with all the advantages and disadvantages that brings. I can propose another theory, everyone is getting excited with the big sensors, but what about smaller ones? It seems that most photos and videos are shot with tiny mobile sensors, why not a much larger m43 one?1 point

I don't think Panasonic will do much for the S1. They will want you to buy the S5. The first year of the GH5 you got some decent upgrades, but its just small stuff since. I think if you got the S1 and want more, buy the S5 or the S1H. Back when the S1 was announced, I had plans to buy it, but held back. I'm glad I did. The S5 is looking the better option and camera.1 point

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
PannySVHS reacted to Marcio Kabke Pinheiro for a topic
If Panasonic somehow figured out the AF issues, in my view the S5 could be a hit. For exactly the same reasons that the A7 III was - not the best in any area, but a very good balance for most users with a good price in the segment. The huge size of the S1 line was a downside for many people (albeit, with good reason, praised by a lot of other people). This was solved. If ony Pansonic could release less HUGE lenses...1 point -

Use the color adjustments mainly for creative project. For day to day editing what I use the most is hitting offset and I can adjust the white balance with the left wheel, tint with center wheel, and the exposure with the right. I use that adjustment constantly. Have the stream deck setup to create new color nodes and for switchin between editing/color/fairlight/deliver pages.1 point

What put me off from the S1 was the extra fee for the vlog update. I use to defend it back when they did it for the GH4 and GH5 as I felt it right to pay for an extra function reserved more for video professionals. Then they included it for free on one of their lower level cameras and it didn't sit right with me after that. In hindsight, I feel that at the time they released the S1 that they should have advised customers of the S1H upcoming release; I know some were caught out by this and invested in the S1 and then learnt a camera more suited for video was due afterwards, even if more costly. Now a year later, they offer an improved S1 in the S5. Feels like those early adopters for Panasonic fullframe didn't get the best deal. Not a concern to me as I didn't jump in. But I might feel differently if I had.1 point

No offense, but I never understand these ‘feel a bit cheated’ comments every time a new camera comes out. New camera should = new & improved spec even with ‘cheaper’ models as tech is both passed down and improved upon. The S1 has been out over a year I think which though is not that long, you can’t really be peeved at Panasonic for bringing out a new camera for the end of 2020?1 point

Sony A7S III

Hey LightShooter, I have a full Edelkrone setup. As the ole Franks Hot sauce commercial says... "Edelkrone, I put that $h1t on everything", lol I will be doing some shots with the JibOne combines with dual HeadOne V2's for repeatable motion controlled pan/tilt/jib movements. Also will be doing some shots with the SliderOne Pro V2 combined with dual HeadOne V2's for repeatable motion controlled pan/tilt/slider movements. I want to see how well the A7SIII does with parallax in an outdoor scenario, with high dynamic range needs, and lots of motion and reflections (waterfall, creek, large bolders). Will be testing that in 10bit 4K/120p and 10bit HD/240p, plus 16bit 4K RAW (out to 12bit 4K ProRes RAW, as long as Atomos releases it when I go to test). Also, looking forward to testing out the time lapse with these setups. A motion controlled Jib movement with pan/tilt done over an hour or two, has an interesting look to it. And with 12.1MP sensor at 4264 x 2408, the resulting timelapse would be about a 4.3K video. If you have anything specific to do with motion controlling and A7SIII tests you would like to see, let me know.1 point -
I wish you the best of luck, of course hit us up on here to talk through your pro's and con's. It is so important to understand your business goals, your requirements, the priority and "weight" of each of those requirements, a realistic evaluation of what you have and how that meets and doesn't meet your current and future needs, etc. No small task. On one hand just the thought of switching makes me anxious, but on the other hand, it can be exciting and light a new fire to your passion and motivate you, rekindling that drive. But dang, no small decision for sure. Good luck 🙂1 point

Lots of parallels there between the sponsored government content and YouTube. Most people see journalists as independent so when a government message is dressed up as an independent news article by a reporter, it's a confidence trick really. You are having people believe one thing about the source of the info, when the small print actually reveals something else very different. Like with Fro Knows Promo and his marketing units from Canon USA, new firmware pre-installed. It is a sponsored message by Canon pulling the strings, but we're led to believe it's an independent photographer with expert hair. Technically it isn't sponsored so he can get away with no regulation. But the mechanics of it are the same. Close contact between the source and the messenger. Collaborative effort on content. Goods changing hands behind the scenes (or in the Daily Mail's case actual hard cash most likely) and an overall objective to define the message to achieve certain ends - in Fro's case to assure people that overheating is fixed and to make the controversy go away, and to make it seem like Canon has been listening to customers. The thing that pisses me off the most about the Canon / YouTuber stuff is that now the overheating times are so all over the place due to the added variable of measuring the ambient air temperature at unknown points and using it to influence the cripple clock timer in unknown ways - Canon haven't been able to pin down even rough estimated recording times and so haven't put out the new memo. Instead they chose to get the memo out via multiple YouTube shills who all report different numbers to muddy the waters and confuse critics. The classic Dominic Cummings tactic of the OODA loop. https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/brexit-strategy-dominic-cummings-ooda-loop-1-6339099 It stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act. "OODA loop - an idea created in the US military by former Air Force colonel John Boyd as a means of thinking about decision-making in combat - is one of the favourite concepts of everyone's favourite chief strategist, Dominic Cummings. "The concept behind the loop - as detailed over tens of thousands of words in Cummings' extensive blogs - relates to the cycle of decision-making made in combat, but also in politics and other situations. They are Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act (O-O-D-A, or OODA). Each step of the process informs and modifies the others - hence 'loop' - and shapes the next course of action. "The idea for a fighter pilot is based on taking the information you know, the training you have, what your instruments are telling you about the enemy, and feeding all of that into your next manoeuvre. "The faster and less predictable you are, the more you disrupt your opponent's decision-making - their experience is worth less, they have less time to take in information, they don't know how to act. This is what is described as getting "inside their OODA loop" and is supposedly a key to victory." But most importantly Canon are using YouTuber's to get the message out about the new firmware, because the know the drive for clicks and clickbait hype will come ahead of proper testing and scientific analysis, with Fro claiming FIXED with a big SHOCKED FACE when actually the real performance is far from fixed and very variable.1 point -

Andrew Reid reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
There is a massive difference between marketing and unregulated marketing. Not just in terms of the accountability for accuracy but also, in the case of marketing content posing as editorial, for the disclosure of its funding source and so by extension its impartiality. A very alarming trend from the UK Government over the past year is to "market" its message through newspaper's websites such as The Daily Mail with articles such as this one that support its position on an issue (in this case sending kids back to school) and on the face of it these would appear to be genuine news stories. Its been shared 271 times from this source alone - which would mean its exponential reach is many multiples of that by now- and I would be willing to bet that those sharing it or those having it shared to have either not noticed the small "Sponsored" tag or chosen not to care because it supports this position too. Now, I think its absolutely horrendous, though not surprising given the cast of characters, that the actual Government is using advertorial practices like this to push its messages. However, despite it being deeply unpalatable, it is nonetheless still subject to real enforceable regulation so the "Sponsored" tag has to appear on the link to the "story" and the funding source stated in the introduction to the piece itself. So, when YouTube videos are regulated in the same way and that regulation is as rigidly enforced as it would be with traditional media then we can talk about it being marketing in the same way but not until then, however well meaning and seemingly "transparent" some content providers are about it. If you put up some content on YouTube with copyrighted music then you'll know about it before its even finished processing because there is a direct financial interest involved in policing that and it can be automated. With, at the last time I checked, somewhere in the order of 400-500 hours of new content being uploaded to YouTube every minute there just isn't the technology or manpower available to interpret what is and isn't sponsored content so it relies on an honesty system from the creator and a policing system driven by users reporting it. Considering the whole aim of advertorial is to make an advert look exactly like editorial, then its not difficult to see how an unscrupulous creator could exploit the system and as the unwritten rule of advertorial is on some level to dupe the consumer of it why no viewers would have known it had happened and therefore report it. I don't think people have any problem whatsoever with watching content that has an ad break in it. The real problem is when people are unaware that they're watching an ad that has a content break in it.1 point -

I will challenge you on this, Kye. Clickbait is a specific form of marketing. Not all marketing is clickbait. Clickbait is a much more perverse form of marketing and I would say could be achieved by other means. Almost every time I click on clickbait, I'm let down by the content. I would also say that many of these Youtube "influencers" didn't start with clickbait. It was gradual and now so many are doing it, the experience has become crap. Clickbait is usually just a crutch for poor content IMO.1 point -

I try to exclude those channels from my youtube-account the best I can. The titles and clickbait is one thing, but the studid shocked-faces is something I can´t stand. Even if something would be of interest for me, I won´t watch it once some of those factors come into play. Basically, as long as users/consumers continue to watch content without reflecting on it, its producer(s) and what its goal is, this stuff will continue to be made. Sure, some of the channels are pure marketing/advertisements and there is nothing wrong with it (as long as it is presented for what it really is), but pseudo-objective unboxings, sponsorings etc. is bothering me. I do watch a lot on youtube, from different genres. From music to camera-equipment, movie-stuff and diy-videos. But a lot of them I will not watch because of certain rules I set for myself.1 point -
Yes, looks like the Sony AX100 to me, flipped of course and is and has been my workhorse for ceremony & speeches at weddings for quite a few years (since whenever it came out). I actually shot an entire wedding video on it once, but then immediately went back to mirrorless. It’s good for static stuff but the result is not exactly what you might call ‘cinematic’. At least not in my hands 🤪1 point
-
My rule of thumb for YouTube is if it has any of the following in the title/thumbnail, I will not click: A stupid faked shocked face. A clickbait title. Anything that calls a; campervan, motorhome, caravan, van, car or shed, a ‘Tiny House’. Any of these can be homes, but none of them are houses. The ‘problem’ with YouTube is that whilst the quality levels and content of some channels is exceptional, the sea of utter dross gets ever bigger.1 point

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
MicahMahaffey reacted to SteveV4D for a topic
I am trying to work out if the GH6 is a thing or not. Owning a vast amount of MFT lenses makes it a better buy than starting from scratch with the S5 or another fullframe. Though I have enough MFT cameras and welcome at least one fullframe to balance my gear out. I wonder what Panasonic would bring to the table with the GH6 to keep it relevant given what we are now seeing in fullframe cameras. I hope more than just 8K. Internal ND filters, internal RAW maybe. So far Panasonic are putting more effort into their fullframe and I question if the writing is on the wall for their GH line. Maybe I am wrong. But with Olympus pulling out, MFT feels like an endangers species relegated to cheaper camera releases.1 point -
I think that is just to address BM's v6.9.5 firmware killing the general compatibility with Viltrox rather than adding the focus stuff. V6.9.5 was a bit of a nightmare as it also killed Bluetooth operation of the cameras but BM have now released v6.9.6 yesterday to resolve it so maybe Viltrox will now have to patch their fix to back to what it was ! Be good if you or anyone else who has one could have a quick test of it though as I get a lot of enquries about what adapter to get for my focus controllers so it would be good to offer a lower cost option than the Metabones.1 point

This looks great as a gimbal / travel camera. Load it into a backpack with a couple of zooms and you're good to go. In typical Canon Cinema EOS style is about £2k more than you'd like to spend, but then you reach for it every time over something cheaper or more convoluted (e.g. a Z-cam rig). I'll likely get one to replace my C200 for straight-forward video jobs. It'll also probably cut in fine as a b-cam on higher end jobs.1 point -

Wow, $6299...no wonder why the specs are so good, this thing is specd and priced above the C200, I did not expect that. Well that explains the lack of a cripple hammer then. They want you to pay A cam prices for a B cam form factor. On top of that you would have to buy RF lenses to get the most out of it. I bet it also has backup video recording to both SD cards, and for that price it definitely has XLR audio as well. I'm so tired of Canon's games, if I had to buy a video camera right this instant I would get the Panasonic S5.1 point -

Yes I see them now, maybe it's only a 2 and 4 stop ND filter, I just can't imagine how they will cripple it, I've learned though thanks to the R5 and R6 fiasco; never underestimate Canon's cripple hammer creativity. I'll bet Canon wishes they could only offer 1080P and get away with it. I think they won't offer RAW, probably no CLOG3, no XLR, no more than a 4 stop ND filter, definitely no IBIS, oh and it will overheat but only if it detects that you haven't yet purchased a Cinema camera. With the purchase of each cinema camera you'll get an unlock code for the CLOG3 and removal of the overheating timer in the C70.1 point -
