  1. You have had the camera for a year. That's a fairly long time when it comes to tech but, your camera is just as good as when you bought it. It's still a great camera. You have either made your money back on that S1 over the last year and if you haven't......then the S1 is still better than what you really need and will still serve you well. I know a few ACS (Australia) accredited DP's who still shoot on FS7's despite better cameras coming along since it's release many years ago. Oh, and full articulation screen is only an advantage if you are a Vlogger. Personally, I hate fully articulating screens. If you ARE a Vlogger, don't stress, the S1 is still more than up to the job. Established DP's don't just run out and always buy the latest and greatest and neither should you. Nor should you feel like you've been conned. I really don't understand why many are always chasing the latest and greatest when what they have still does the job perfectly. The S1 is still great! People making a living from cameras are NOT upgrading or changing systems every year! Invest in lenses!

  2. Will be interesting to see how this compares with the new RF Canon Cine cameras, it needs to have the colour science of the FX9 rather than the A7s3 to really stand a chance imo

  3. I should receive mine real soon (it is in transit), I will test it really soon cause I will have some run and gun shooting coming in the next weeks. I bought it purposely for these kind of situations when I want/need to go light and don't want to deal with my mattebox and if I need to be on a low profile to shoot on the streets. I have some variable circular NDS but I never liked circular VNDs always some issues and the fact to have several diameters for my lenses is problematic. My mattebox is quite light (Polarpro Basecamp Mattebox) but I want to be even lighter than this sometimes 😉

  4. Still no punch-to-focus while recording. That sucks as people have asked for it for literally years. 😞

  5. Nokishita spotted a new Fuji camera that has just been certified. Fuji Rumors don't say a lot about it as they tell people to wait a bit before giving us some bits of information about it. It seems to have the same wireless communication module that the upper Fuji model like the X-Pro 3. The announcement day should be on October 16th. Is it possible to see an X-H2 announcement out of the blue?

  6. So the official lists have been finalized on the production model that will start being sent to PRO Support in a week and other pre-release places. Mostly for reference if you need it, but I found the movie recording option one to be well laid out with everything I needed in one chart. Getting excited to get mine. Fingers crossed, but I had my paid invoice literally in the first 10 seconds on pre-order and was the first to fill out the "prioritized shipping consideration" from Sony PRO Support. It has been a long wait for this camera release, hope it proves to be worth it. FULL Specifications (which is currently missing from Sony's page for the A7SIII): GREAT Single place for all movie recording options, depth, framerate, codec, bitrate, memory card req.: Breakdown all of the controls, dials, covers, holes, jacks, etc:

  7. This camera seems to be an image quality monster like the S1H, if the 150mbit 10bit codec is as stellar or the same as on the GH5. And, Varicam image quality. A few of us are still talking about autofocus a lot when we already could assume it would not be much better. That I find missing the point of this 10bit image machine. This is a indie cinema filmmakers camera dream come true. A full frame GH5 with full VLog. A varicam for your backpack. I tested the high iso noise reduction of the S1 in its 709 modes and HLG 75mbit. It looks to my eye pretty much non existent on a big monitor. To users like Dennis alias deezid of course it is still there. And I am happy he has a keen eye on image quality like no other forum member. Btw, for 1999 EU you can get this cam with a Sigma 45 2.8 until September 30th in Europe. If no other caveheats showing up, perfect release, except micro hdmi. Wait, what has Panasonic thought, no fun with external monitors! No fun with focus pulling. Wow, at the end of my rambling I must admit, due to the micro hdmi it is not the indie cinema filmmakers dream come true. GH5 still is. But it is an image quality lovers dream come true. Darn, no full HDMI. How, excuse me, silly does that look. Would have been a perfect release with one. Really dig that tasty image quality as shown in Potato Jets review:

  9. I think so. They had to have a gyro instead of IBIS data for the FX9 because they couldn't have the IBIS mechanism and the electronic ND both fit in the mount. I'm actually really impressed with the Gyro data stabilization, and look forward to that being usable in other applications. Their "advanced" mode on the A7sIII seems great and I'm glad they have the gyro data. From Gerald Undone's tests it seems that the IBIS is not as good as the Panasonic S1, so that is another strike against it for me.

  10. Looking forward to comparing this to the (rumoured) Canon C70. Really not sure which way I'll lean, but excited about both cameras.

  11. Panasonic have had to go hard on this today to wrestle control of YouTube back from this week' dominant content on there. I'm referring of course to the historic event of Hanna&Kotaro going to visit Aty for the first time. The merging of two of the major otter franchises has been massive and I for one am there for it.

  12. It's more the fact his tests are the usual smoothly run/walk towards/away from camera and not real tests. Gerald Undone did one and it looks as bad as ever unfortunately:

  13. Well I have only watched Gordon Laing’s two reviews and my verdict is it’s good...but probably not the camera for me. I need an equally great hybrid, ie, have an equal requirement for stills and video. Price is good. New lenses coming are good. Size etc, all good. AF though still seems not quite there for video and just OK/reasonably decent for stills. Small EVF is not great for me. Not a full swivel screen fan either but that is not a dealbreaker. Conclusion for me is that a 2021 pairing of Sony A7S3 for video and A74 for stills is probably my best bet, especially as I am looking for a minimum 3 year investment. If not longer. So waiting to see what Nikon’s Z6S will be and Fuji’s XH2 and both I expect will be closer to my needs over the new Panasonic. Like it, but think I’d get frustrated with it’s limitations quite quickly considering the imminent opposition. Canon can go do one on sheer point of principle now.

  14. So 60p is a 1.5 crop after all. Not good. 30 min clip limit. Not good. Micro HDMI. Not good. Lower resolution screen and EVF not good. Small size is nice for me, 10 bit 60p is a step up and AF whilst not on Canon or Sony level showing improvements. Vlog is included. Well done Panasonic. Time to stop charging extra for it. Some great specs in a small size. Future Fireware update adds DCI 4K.. thats good. But why wait... Hard to know what I think of this camera. Like the other fullframe mirrorless, it has some great features mixed with some notable misses. Not sure whether its worth the upgrade to fullframe or not. I may hold off for now and see if a GH6 is announced by March next year.

  15. It is reminiscent of the amount of exceptions in "What Have The Romans Ever Done For Us?" !

  16. Yep. In fact they would probably be mad to. It’s not just a new body but an entire range of new lenses to meet everyone’s needs and it’s difficult to do that already even with a couple of half dozen in the APSC line up. So nope, at least in my humble opinion, Fuji should stick to dominating either side of the FF market. Oh and apparently there is some new camera announcement soon but it’s not the XH2 or any ‘next’ model but something new. We shall see...

  18. https://www.l-rumors.com/last-minute-leaked-s5-info-future-update-will-come-to-support-anamorphic-shooting/ "– An update will come later this year for the S5 to give support to 5,9K 29,97p/4K DCI/3,5K Anamorphic via Atomos Ninja V recorder – 2 new picture profiles: L Monochrome S and L Classic Neo – V-Log and V-Gamut are included, no additional fees – Panasonic will announce 7 (!) “affordable” lenses: 24mm, 35mm, 50mm et 85mm ( available in November < 1000€) with F1.8 aperture, a 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 zoom and a bright wide angle lens" I personnally think this is insane for the price point to be able to record 6K out of the Ninja V ! Perfect B-Cam to the S1H! The primes are all I've been expected for. Let's go Panasonic !! PS : what's left for Panasonic S1 buyers? An firmware update for sure !

  19. Dang, I just noticed the "Max Rec. Bitrate" on XAVC S-I 4K is 1,200 Mbps 😮 Notice how they support V90 or faster for that. What is weird to me, is that sure if you multiply out the 299 MB/s (Mega Bytes/sec) rating of the Sony Tough G cards you get 299 MB/s x 8 bits/1MB or 2,392 Mbps (Mega Bits/sec), so clearly those Tough G cards are capable of such speeds. HOWEVER, the whole point of a V rating is to identify the max sustained write speed of the card and V90 is 90MB/s sustained write or 90MB/s x 8 bits/1MB = 720 Mbps, which is supposedly the max sustained bitrate from a V90 card. So not, sure if Sony has a typo here or if their TOUGH G cards are more like V150 cards which is the rating that would be needed to sustain writes at 1,200Mbps

    Sony A7S III

The Sony PRO Support person I have been working with, replied back that he had to ship back his A7SIII. He is getting his production model in the next week'ish before the bulk starts shipping. He is going to do another zoom with me once he gets it. Currently all of Sony PRO Support is working from home, so they are not driving into a common place where all the gear they normally have access to. So they request specific hardware based on the customers they work on. There's no data set yet on when they return, so for now, until he gets his unit, he has not way to verify where those settings are and if they are in there. I did however, find a small blurb listing in the final production document he shared about a shadow setting (I assume the highlight would be there next to it). I'm beginning to wonder if Brandon confused a photography setting with video? He is the first to tell you that he is not technical, like the opposite of Gerald Undone, lol (he's modest though, he knows some technical, just not deep) "Use Creative Look to create moods in camera" A selection of new Creative Looks makes it easy to create interesting moods for stills and movies right in the camera. 10 Creative Looks are provided as presets that can be used without modification or customized by the user, based on the currently selected camera mode. The [FL] preset, for example, has clear contrast and an interesting blend of subdued but impressive colors. The [IN] preset has a soft, matte look. The presets provide a wide range of variations with different combinations of color, color depth, brightness, contrast, sharpness, and more. Eight customizable parameters including contrast, saturation, shadow and others can be adjusted while viewing the resulting image via the monitor or viewfinder. Customized Creative Looks can be stored as Custom Looks for later recall and use. So, maybe Brandon customized this Custom Look with those shadow and highlights adjustments. My understanding is that these creative looks are only for stills and don't apply to movies, but I could be mistaken. The other part of your question to do with firmware update to the A7III to add this, will depend. If my above guess is right, that wouldn't help you if you want those adjustments for picture profiles (video). Will update this once I hear back from support (may be 7 to 10 more days).

  21. Very interesting..... I have tried the 55mm Aspherical on the S1H and it's stellar. Can't imagine how great it looks on medium format. Not a big fan of corner sharpness. More into lenses with a lot of curvature of field (soft corners and swirl bokeh). S1 and S1H have a great hidden anamorphic mode but it's only 30p. 6k photo mode set to 4:3 is 4992X3744, 95% of the full sensor height. Not sure how 4992 is 6K but the image is excellent. 75mm Lomo anamorphic should cover. Leica Summitar and Kodak Ektar (47mm) are also interesting if you like swirl bokeh. No idea if they cover more than 135. I suspect the 47mm Ektar is what Arri is rehousing in DNA.

  22. Good release from Panasonic. Looks like a full frame GH5. The GH6 will have to be very special to stay relevant after all these new releases. Besides price, the A7SIII still has some big advantages. Im seeing it in this thread again, but what is it with people saying the A7SIII is a boring, underwhelming release? They gave us: up to 4k120 10bit full frame at full pixel readout, new PDAF, 240fps HD, crazy EVF, swivel screen, very low rolling shutter, higher DR, bigger battery, new menus, better button layout, full size HDMI... it goes on. Certainly not underwhelming or boring! I’m still using my EVA1 and GH5, both help me make very pretty pictures. I just wish one of them had 4k120fps 10bit with PDAF for gimbal use. Hence, A7SIII is in my sights.

  23. The 28mm F1.4 AF-D (old legend) ? I tried that. I seem to remember it didn't quite cover but can check again and memory is a bit fuzzy.

  24. It's funny that after all the hype over the new camera drops, the A7SIII that's the "least" exciting of the bunch (basically a solid camera release, finally) wins the day. At least for solo corporate work.

  26. @Geoff CB are we going to need a bigger boat? 😀 I’ve said it before but it’s always worth repeating and that is I have no brand loyalty as such but instead more of a commitment as it were to companies that produce what I need and keep on doing so. Fuji for 7-8 years have earned my commitment and my least favoured brand has been Sony...but there comes a point when it’s hard to argue against capability as a total package.

  27. I'm in the same boat, I'm going to rent it first but I'm really leaning towards long term going full Sony. I love my Nikon's but it has so many minor annoyances and they are never going to have a video camera to move up to or use alongside them. Sony has the lenses and the AF performance for photo and video. If the R5/R6 had knocked it out of the park I would have considered it but not anymore.

  28. If this has 4K 10bit (which it surely does???) then I'm looking forward to the FS7 price drops!

  29. At $2000 I would much rather buy a used S1 with it's better battery, EVF, and handling. The only thing it lacks is the 10-bit 60p. Edit: And unlimited record time and a full size HDMI instead of micro.

  30. The 85mm F1.2L is a work of art on the GFX 100. A thing of beauty. The 55mm F1.2 FD Aspherical as well - it covers. The 50mm F1.2L FD isn't quite there. Too much vignetting and doesn't stand out against other similar fast old SLR 50mm lenses on it. Actually some of the surprising fits are with the Minolta and Voigtlander glass. Some pancake, smaller stuff works surprisingly well. Voigtlander 40mm F2.0 Ultron in EF mount for example. Pentax 43mm F1.9 Limited is nice as well. Gives you the fast 35mm wide angle look on medium format for cheap. Just don't expect the corner sharpness to be as good as Fuji's own GFX lenses for landscapes. You can stop down but there's still a bit of a drop off in the far corners in 4:3. But in 16:9 for 4K filming, it's fine. 85mm and 135mm do tend to go well. Wider than 40mm and you tend to struggle with vignetting. The 24mm F1.4L FD I did try and no luck with that! This is why I think it'd be really nice to have a full frame crop mode in 4K video by firmware update, for the gems like that, and also even a 4:3 anamorphic mode that uses the medium format 16:9 height of the sensor equivalent to how tall the active imaging area is in 3:2 for full frame, but crop the wide sides of the sensor to 4:3 in that mode.

  31. That's good to know, I've worked with electronics and IT equipment for many years and the first rule of thumb was to always remove power before connecting or disconnecting anything, so when I got my adapter plate I made sure it had a power button. The part I wasn't sure about was if there were any high capacity capacitors anywhere in the circuit that could still cause problems after the power was removed. I used to mod cars with custom audio systems and those audio caps could fry anything they touched weeks after the power was removed. Of course now my concern is someone accidentally pulling out the HDMI cable while everything is powered on, I'm paranoid enough that I may still use a dedicated battery for my monitor. I've got about $20K into my C200 so I'm a little more paranoid than if it were something smaller.
