  1. Hi everyone! As pointed out earlier, I am rolling out an Ed David Speaking Engagement Tour. I will be mostly talking about myself and how many likes I have on this forum, but I will also address the following subjects: 1. Canon R5 Overheating: Or is It Existentially Challenging Us to stop shooting millions of photos and video? In this discussion I will discuss the philosophy of the new Canon camera to try to limit the amount of shots one does, harken back to the film days: where each shot count! Or in terms of 8k video - to make sure you are not just rolling and rolling and rolling. To pretend like its 16mm film. To rehearse performances 2. How online forums amplify and ruin conversations You love your Aunt? With facebook, not anymore. And multiple that by a thousand when dealing with people on any online forum. How the stroke of a button and hitting "send" can cause incredible pain and anxiety on the other end. But who cares? You don't have to be in the room with said person to see them upset! 3. How the Covid Apocolypse and the Great Depression 2.0 makes us happier, better filmmakers We will chat about the end of the world. Whether its the Pandemic, or Fascism or the Great Depression- or all the above, that really makes us depressed - with massive unemployment. And how that affects us as filmmakers. Being happy and productive! 4. how to make money as a filmmaker without shooting butt paste commercials One word: you cant! How can you afford rent, you fool? Sell out now and sell out fast. Sell sell sell sell sell. Market market market. And if you dont shoot commercials, do your own youtube channel and do the bidding of sponsors! Or give up and start a podcast. 4. Just f*cking kidding - it will all be about me. I am a giant showboat. Come with me as we look at profile pics of me. We talk about my best posts. We trash my many, many enemies. Please respond to this to boost my ego and trash me so I can feel that rush of public humiliation - the meanest, most horrible response gets a free ticket!

  2. Not the reason at all. Both Nikon and Sony do heavy processing on their footage. Strong NR creating all kinds of artifacts and strong sharpening with halos around corners. If you want a proper Sony camera which doesn't look like video, the FX9 and above are your only choices. While Panasonic starting with the S5/S1 and above looks really organic.

  3. In the UK there’s a main dealer S5 bundle for £2080 which includes 20-60mm lens, Sigma 45mm lens, extra battery and shooting grip. Given that the kit lens is over £400 more on its own, the value of the extras in the bundle makes the S5 body price around £1100. This assumes that you want the two lenses, grip and battery of course. But does put it at the same price level as the Canon RP. How would everyone have reacted if the body only price had been this low? Seems to me that Panasonic really wants to kick start sales of this.

    is lensbaby naff?

Yes, Lensbaby’s add character into the lenses that you can modify to your taste. For instance, the Twist 60 has a petzval effect and the Sweet 50 has a dramatic “sweet spot” effect. You can’t do this with a normal tilt shift lens. Also they do standalone lenses. The Sol45 gives a stunning warped bokeh effect, the Burnside 35 a wide angle swirl effect. The Velvet range, a soft focus dreamy effect. I love the Omni filter kit. I initially dismissed that system from the online samples but after using it, it can help you produce incredibly abstract and ethereal images. These are not lenses for anything moving fast. The focus can be so unbelievably shallow at the most extreme usage case. It takes a very delicate approach. Also I wouldn’t shoot in a softer recording option such as line skipped 1080p 200fps. I’ve only been using them the last few months, and recently on some pro shoots. The image and character certainly turns heads and gets people asking excitable questions. I sound like a Lensbaby ambassador haha. I am not. These would be terrible lenses for some people. They are not for everyone. But they are certainly not naff. For the right purpose, they are absolutely excellent.

  6. I care! You made a brilliant point about the smoothness of the Panasonic S series V-Log compared to what other manufacturers are doing with their profiles at the same price point. That's worth more to me than AF.

    is lensbaby naff?

No, Lensbaby’s are not naff. The problem is too many people don’t understand their purpose. They are all about isolating the subject in different ways. They have a steep learning curve, but for the right use cases, the results can be spectacular. And no, you can’t replicate what they do in post. My favourite ones are the Sweet 35 and Sweet 50, plus the Sol45. I also love the Omni Filter Kit, which again, so many people dismiss as an Instagram gimmick, but when you actually use it, you realise it’s not. It’s very clever actually. These are not the type of lenses you keep on your body and do an entire shoot with. I use them for specific shots where the aesthetic will contribute to the story. I would try before you but too, they aren’t for everyone. For actual character lenses, check out Iron Glass Adapters or search for modified Helios 44-2 on eBay. The Mir 1B 37mm. Trioplan 100m. Vivitar 28mm. Helios 85mm. There’s also lenses from Lomography and new ones from Dulens.

  9. Andrew, Thanks for your comments on the S5. I can't wait to see and read your final assessment of the S5. Seeing all the reviews it strikes me the S5 is what the S1 should have been all along-----at least for video. Also, BIG NEWS: the peaking does not verschwand before my eyes. THANK YOU, Panasonic. From the footage I've seen from reviewers on youtube the image quality and colors---skin tones--look lovely....Panasonic may be taking the cake for best color, just love it. It's capabilities make, in my mind, a needed correction for the excessive number of frame rates in the S1H----plus, no fork lift is required to shoot the S5. And it's getting RAW and Cinema 4k later this year? Is that right? Amazing. Besides, the new battery I understand the S5 can also use the standard GH5 battery. Is that right? For me, a fully manual video shooter, this is the most exciting offering of the season. It clicks all my boxes, and the few it doesn't click---well, they weren't all that critical anyway. I'm seriously considering going all in with Panasonic at this point.

  11. Not yet, some day hopefully. That process takes time, just gotta stick with it. Power Consumption is rated at 3.3W for stills and 4.3W for Movies: but depending on the video mode you shoot on, and also considering the CFExpress cards and also if powering 4 mics via the XLR-K3M, which I plan to do for Docs/Talking head/Corp work) In comparison to some of the other FF Sony cameras (and 1 APSC): A7S Mark III - consumes 3.3W for stills and 4.3W for movies A7R Mark IV - consumes 2.9W for stills and 5.8W for movies A7 Mark III - consumes 2.8W for stills and 4.7W for movies A9 Mark II - consumes 2.9W for stills and 4.9W for movies A6600 - consumes 2.4W for stills and 3.9W for movies Interesting that the A7SIII consumes the most for stills, but consumes the least for movies and almost as little power as the A6600. I'll be honest, I did not expect to see this, thanks for the question. They have really worked some magic into the video on this camera 🙂 Now, as to noise reduction. Early reports from Phillip Bloom, who has spent the most time with the A7SIII from any other NDA'ed tester and was the only one with early access to the Ninja V with RAW, there some noise reduction that you can't turn off when using the internal codecs. For most people that will be fine, but I would prefer to turn it off personally and manage noise myself in post. Baking in noise reduction into your media file is just not a good idea IMHO. However, the good news is that we are getting 16bit RAW with the A7SIII (into Ninja V at 12bit ProRes RAW log) and that should be straight from the sensor without any noise reduction. Taking that discussion a tad further though and you have that very interesting "dual gain" or sensitivity boost or something going on at 16,000 ISO. Not only do you see a noticeable drop in noise at 16,000 from 12,800, but the exposure slightly improves, as does the dynamic range slightly (it seems). Question is, is this some noise reduction and exposure trick that is now baked into the image, or is it more like a "dual gain" design (yes, I know its not true dual gain to your ARRI snobs, lol... We won't know until we get the production models and start testing. VERY exciting though

  14. Can I get some tickets for myself, and the entire filmmaking community who are fed up of covering up for other people's bullshit. I have many, many people interested. I was even considering an EOSHD Lecture tour. Unfortunately sales fell flat. Nobody wanted to hear about my 10 years of experiences in the camera industry or even the musical interlude featuring cute little Mr Tiddles with the lyrics "Kitty cat, kitty cat, meow meow meow. Purr purr purr" Surely the musical interlude alone could have booked out the Staples Center?

  15. Guys.. it is amazing how much the NX1 still holds in 2020 (not considering ISO limitations). I continually compare the footage of the NX1 with that of the other cameras I use and still continue to prefer what the damn NX1 sensor produces.

  18. Neither does it seem to be available in Ireland (who are thankfully still in the EU 🤣), so it must be a continental Europe thing. But I guess you could try ordering from a continental seller if you're in Ireland or UK?

  19. Maybe not in the UK as all I see on the CVP website is the free Sigma 45mm or free XLR1 MICROPHONE ADAPTER offer. So yeah maybe not outside EU.

    Sony A7S III

Ah, got it. Had me going through my A7III for a minute until I read this second post. Thanks for looking into it, I sure hope we get a firmware update to include that option.

  21. I agree about the financial pain of moving to L mount. If I were to do it I think I'd stick to my EF lenses and just manual focus them like I've always been doing. The image is nicer than the GH5. But would any of my clients notice? Probably not!

  22. I already have the 24-70 f2.8 and waiting for the primes that will be released by november. And I also have a 5 lenses kit of Samyang cinema lenses that I use on paid projects on my S1H. But what interest me in the 16-35 f4 is that its aperture is constant and it's kind of small, matching the small size of the S5. Also for me, f4 (and sometimes f5.6) is the sweet spot for shooting video in Full Frame in manual focus, it has that FF look with a little bit of blur in the background without being too hard to pull focus. So perfectly fine for me. i'd rather compromise a bit on the size than on the constant aperture compared to the 20-60.

  23. Ok so the price for the S5 is 2000 euros , then 1500 -600 euros for the Panasonic 16-35 = 2900 euros for the Panasonic S5 + Panasonic 16-35 f4 + Sigma 45mm f2.8 (FREE) ! I think it's worth it ! In europe the prices are 2300 euros for Panasonic + 20-60, check for yourself here : https://www.digit-photo.com/PANASONIC-Lumix-S5-20-60mm-f-3-5-5-6-rPANASONICDCS5KEK.html

  24. Yet another bargain - Sony FS5 Mki for GBP1100! So off to the beach I go. Unfortunately I went with the wrong lens still attached, so some of these shots are a bit soft. This was on SLog2 with SGamut. Now working on some stuff in SLog3 with Sgamut3.cine, which I'm advised should give better results. Thoughts on the camera I really like the size and the ergonomics. WB setting is a little cranky and I wish I could map push AF to one of the handgrip buttons, but overall I'm really enjoying it - especially the 10bit HD 4:2:2 and the S&Q modes. I haven't even tried the 4K yet. Obviously the AF is the definition of shonky compared to the C100 mki with DPAF that I sold to buy this.

  27. Man, those are some serious bitrates for 1080P, holy crap (course that is S&Q). I have never had the pleasure of recording an All-Intra based codec (and 4:2:2 10bit) in 1080P S&Q Mode Normal Mode

  28. To second what @ntblowz said, most people I know that are successful in investing are in it for the long term. There's a saying that if you're going to own stock for a decade or more, any time is the right time to buy. There is a pretty widely held belief that there is a strong 10-year cycle that the market follows, and so the idea is to plot a 10-year moving average for the whole market (eg, look at the indexes) and whenever the current market position is below that trend-line then that's the right time to buy.

  29. You absolutely missed my point. But it's ok, I still understood what your point is and respect it. Just watch Gerald's S5 review video after 23:00 and you will understand why I feel punked as an S1 owner. He says at the end "(S5) has basically rendered the S1 obsolote because the S1's advantages aren't worth $700" and that is exactly how I feel. At least they gave S1 owners a firmware upgrade with the improved AF but this doesn't change how I feel. It even has quite a few extras borrowed from S1H which S1's don't possess. 32. nice, yeah me too. I was on B&H at 9am, hitting refresh every 5 mins or so, just in case they had an oopsie early opening (kind of like their "oopsie" release of that A7SIII video in the early AM). Then when it was about 10minutes till 10am, I started hitting refresh every couple of seconds. They were spot on though, and exactly at 10am, I saw the page, added to card, checked out, and had my conf email all in the first 10 secs, lol (sad, really if you think about it, I mean, it's a dang camera; hahaha). Any way, HIGHLY recommend PRO Support, I've been a member since they started it and just the 3 cleanings per year alone is worth it (they pay shipping both directions), plus I have gotten "loaners" during, as well as you can request 2 week test usage of any camera or lens as long as they have it, and again they pay shipping in both directions. You also get to work directly with support staff that I can't say enough good things about (night and day compared to normal support). And those guys know their stuff, yet when they don't, they don't pretend they do and I really appreciate that. Plus they have brought Engineering in on some discussions and become your champion on enhancement requests. One area I haven't used of PRO Support is the professional events support, things like the Olympics, major events, they (Canon and Nikon) have a setup to support the pro's working the event to make sure their gear is working tip top and if not quickly get you a loaner to get back at it while they figure out a solution. Some day, hopefully 😉 I will get to use that.

  34. Yes, the 10-bit, all-i, S&Q 4k 120 and the HD240 are the options that require the CFA cards. I'm going to get one because I want the full glory of 10-bit and 240fps without long gop compression. For the rest I'm getting a couple v90 cards. On the a7s3 FB group people are constantly asking about the cheapest cards to use in this camera or if a v60 card will record XXX framerate in XX resolution. I never understand these questions, if you're spending $3500 on a body for your projects, don't you want reliable recording? The difference between a 128gb v60 and v90 card isn't much. You can get two Kingston or Prograde 128gb v90 cards for about $250, pennies compared to the cost of the camera and none of this nonsense about "will this card work if I'm shooting...." Anyway. Three more weeks till it ships... Chris

I can not believe that Ebay "thinks" my ancient Canon 24 1.4 L FD is worth more than my Canon 17mm tilt shift? This photo with the TS (with a lowly 12mp "non photo" camera) got a highly commended at the Mono awards 2020 (Australian B&W photo competition that attracts thousands of entries) and highly commended means it got past the second short list but not the final thirty. IF live music ever starts up again, I look forward to getting back to using the TS for both video and photos of full bands from next to the stage.
