  1. A nice side project... Mobile camera tests. It's good fun. I have so far tested: Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Xiaomi Mi 10 Huawei P40 Pro Plus Huawei P40 Pro Huawei Mate 30 Pro Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra iPhone 11 Pro Max Samsung Note 10+ Oppo Find X2 Pro (OnePlus 8 Pro is very similar) I'll keep it short. The big blog post is coming soon. But the DXOMark chart is wrong 🙂 Here's my EOSHDMark ranking: Huawei P40 Pro - 150 Pros: Superbly useful 5x zoom, overall camera quality, nice colours, price. Cons: IR pollution, screen size could be a bit bigger Huawei P40 Pro Plus - 150 Pros: Low light, overall camera quality, nice build. Cons: Lacks 5x module from P40 Pro, 10x module too long for regular use Huawei Mate 30 Pro - 140 Pros: Main camera again is superb like P40 Pro and 3x telephoto not bad either. Nice Samsung Note-like form factor & screen. Cons: Lacks 5x periscope camera of P40 Pro and overall zoom quality Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro - 135 Pros: 8K video and very good main camera, superb screen. Cons: Colours can be a bit clinical, a bit flat, 5x zoom quality is lacking compared to Huawei, back feels & looks cheap Xiaomi Mi 10 - 130 Pros: 8k video and very good main camera, superb screen. Cons: No 3x or 5x zoom modules and back feels / looks cheap. Oppo Find X2 Pro - 110 Pros: A good all-rounder, decent 5x zoom, market leading 3K 120hz screen. Cons: Poor tonality. Oversharpened camera output, beaten by Huawei. Poor choice of back material / weird finish iPhone 11 Pro Max - 105 Pros: Good dynamic range, natural colours, iOS, great build. Cons: Camera hardware dated compared to Chinese competition, poor zoom capabilities. Samsung Note 10+ - 100 Pros: Nice colours and decent main sensor, great form factor. Cons: Dated camera hardware especially compared to Huawei. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra - 95 Pros: Great in-hand feel and wonderful screen. Cons: Camera processing feels unfinished and is a complete let down, especially in low light. Mediocre 5x periscope zoom is soft. Main camera is muddy in low light and feels overly binned & over sharpened in good light. Xiaomi Mi 10 soundly beats it with same sensor! Expensive too! Google Play Store and Google Services installed OK on the Huawei phones. Couple of surprises: P40 Pro 5x optical zoom is the best on the market. Unfortunately they went crazy with the Plus version which is the flagship ($1000+) handset. That has a 10x optical zoom (240mm). It's way less useful than the 5x (135mm). Also the Plus version has a 3x optical zoom camera module, but I'll take the 5x over that any day. The other area of surprise is with colour - the Leica profiles on the standard P40 Pro are less "consumer". Much warmer and more day-glo on the Plus. One area where the Plus does win though is with build quality and low light. Also, there's fewer colour casts and less IR pollution indoors with black fabric, which come out almost purple on the P40 Pro. Also the P40 Pro has quite a cool and quite a green cast sometimes, especially in artificial light - and some will prefer the P40 Pro PLUS here. I find the P40 Pro quite artistic and moody looking though. One thing is for sure - 10x optical zoom lens on a smartphone is quite unique on the market - and when you have a use for it, it does deliver the goods for sure. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro / Mi 10 / Samsung S20 Ultra share similar 108MP sensor. Xiaomi THRAAAASHES the Samsung. They just get much more out of it. Especially in low light, where the S20 Ultra is a mushy mess. Even the old Note 10+ has a preferable look in most circumstances to the S20 Ultra, and to make things worse the 5x optical zoom (actually more like 4x glass) is mediocre at best and significantly softer than the P40 Pro. Also the 8K video on the S20 Ultra is heavily cropped and looks dreadful, whereas the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro don't have a crop and again get much more out of the sensor in the processing. It is not 8K that pixel peeps well but it does make for very good 4K, even in low light. Downsides to the M10 Pro... the 5x zoom is pretty mediocre and noisy... and the Mi 10 makes do with nothing beyond 2x. Great screens though. Oppo Find X2 Pro puts in a good effort but it just looks brittle and thin compared to the Huawei on the main wide angle sensor. The ultra wide isn't as good either. The 5x is pretty good - nice and detailed, but dynamic range and colour lag behind the P40 Pro 5x. Indeed, the main sensor output fairs better for dynamic range but not for colour and it is a very over-sharpened output. I like the Oppo implementation of Android. Shame about the boring design of the back and the odd texture of the glass (has a kind of scratchy feel). Absolutely amazing 3K screen running at 120hz but not as bright in direct sunlight as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Mi 10 standard. There's a bit of a gap from the Huawei phones to everything else in my view. Especially with regards to tonality and the large 1" sensor look. Also the lenses are less flare prone when not absolutely grease free, compared to the Mi 10 Pro which is particularly badly effected and the Find X2 Pro. The iPhone 11 Pro Max fairs best for flare. The Apple device still has great dynamic range and the most natural looking colour - almost a flat look, good for filters. However it is distinctly backward from the Huawei and has that 'small sensor look' to it. The zoom is a complete non-starter against the 5x folded optics in the Huawei. I hope this helps anybody looking at the top 10 of DXOMark. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra I have not yet tried but output looks a bit brittle and thin compared to the Huawei P40 Pro to me, judging by their own samples on the site. The zoom looks good. It shoots 8k. I shall have to try it. Oh and the Mate 30 Pro is my choice for a more "Note 10" handling style of Huawei phone - The main sensor is just as good as the P40 Pro in my opinion. Colours seem a bit closer to the Plus than the standard P40 Pro. Sometimes too consumer. But sometimes better with improved WB and less casts in low light. The 3x zoom is good in daylight. Less so in low light. It doesn't have the wow factor of the 5x on the P40 Pro though. I really wish Huawei had kept the 5x zoom on the P40 Pro Plus with the lovely build quality and ceramic back. I really wish they'd corrected the colour casts and IR pollution without throwing out the "Leica look". It can apply HDR too strongly sometimes even in the Leica profiles. The P40 Pro standard model does this too sometimes but not as often. Maybe they couldn't fit the 10x module and 5x into one phone!! DXOMark's numbers are too close together and don't reflect the differences in main sensor image quality well enough either: P40 Pro - 128 X2 Pro - 124 Mi 10 Pro - 124 Mate 30 Pro - 123 S20 Ultra - 122 The biggest problem is that S20 Ultra score - there is no way it is even in the same league as the others, especially in low light. Mate 30 Pro is significantly more than 1 point better than the S20 Ultra. Also there should be more than 4 points between the P40 Pro and the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

  2. Sony Semicon imposes strict licensing restrictions, one of these restrictions is that certain sensors can only be put in specific products (eg. mobile phone only). This is why drone cameras from Autel/DJI have only recently started using the more than 3 years old IMX586 sensor.

  4. This argument that we are not forced to buy the camera and therefore can't criticise it is just the remarks made by apologists trying to deflect any negative opinions on something they're invested in, be it either the camera or manufacturer. However if you want a reliable fullframe mirrorless with AF, 10 bit HQ 4K and has above 20mps for photo taking, your options become limited. Add uncropped 10 bit 4K 60fps, RAW external and there isn’t one. Choosing a fullframe camera is really down to deciding what functions you can do without.

  5. Exactly. And this is why i am getting mad every time i step on arguments like “What if the R6 overheats? No one forces you to buy the camera so look somewhere else”. Because if that “somewhere else” dies then we are stuck with a couple of companies that are so hungry for cash that will do anything to make us pay more for less.

  6. That's "F2.8 equivalent" by the usual Super 35mm standard. S35 F2.8 DoF is plenty fast enough for shallow DoF for many filmmaking purposes.

  8. So I took the plunge. One Panasonic ambassador told me about an interesting offer with a shop in France. Besides the Panasonic offer with the Sigma 45mm offered for free, this shop will give you 3 years more warranty + a free battery. I thought it was a good deal so I pre-ordered it. I am pretty sure I would do it as I need another body to complement my S1H but this offer made me purchase it right away. So it should arrive by the end of september/beginning of october. I will put it through its paces as I have some interesting jobs coming along, especially one shooting a documentary for the french national television service (France Television) if it is delivered in time. So I'll give you all my first feedback really quick I think. Pretty excited by this camera as it is the one I was waiting for in the L-mount system : a smaller camera than my S1H that could still shoot awesome video to match with the bigger brother, being quite smaller to be my B-cam/gimbal cam, also my main stills camera, and one that I could bring everyday to shoot some street and mundane photography (without the hassle to release the S1H from the rig/cage between pro gigs) and one camera that I could take on vacation without sacrificing any quality in stills picture and video.

  9. Here's an interview reported from 43rumors.com that happened with JIP director Shinichi Inagaki by Toyokeizai. According to 43rumors.com, here are the main takeaways: Original interview: https://toyokeizai.net/articles/-/374348?page=3 This could be interesting in the sense that Olympus/JIP has nothing to protect in terms of the higher-end video market, unlike Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. I know most people think they're dead, but I'm going to wait on making that assessment of the situation.

    Panasonic GH6

I cannot fathom Panasonic not releasing a GH6. I think we'd see an underwhelming GH6 released before we see nothing, because there is still money to squeeze out of the M43 user base regardless of what their long term goals are. Whether or not it lives up to expectations, that's the big question I have. Will we see the continuation of the LX100II, G95 and the G100 or will we see the same innovation that drew us to the GH line to begin with? My suspicion is that we'll see the latter, as if their intention was the former it'd be out by now. What is bothering me though is there's no news/rumors. Give us some info to settle our nerves, especially given what happened with Olympus. Assure us video shooters that we're not sitting on thousands of dollars of M43 gear for nothing. I want a solid statement, not corporate speak.

  12. While we are on the wish list for lenses from Sigma: One of the key advantages of the Sigma fp is it is small. A disadvantage is it lacks in-body stabilization. But, most Sigma lenses are big, as was said, and most also lack stabilization. To use the fp handheld for video, small lenses with OIS are needed. Right now, one really has to use Canon lenses for that.

  13. Canon Just released a Firmware V1.1.1 for R5 and R6 Be aware of possible lock down on my hack finding last Sunday. Even if I think it will be a very fast answer to roll out a firmware in only 3 days, that's still a possibility. At least, it may be able to do a file comparison between V1.1.0 et V1.1.1 to see what changed is any.

  14. It's a weird one. They all covered the firmware release by Canon and the hack with the screw. Then I think they had their fill of the subject and saw the clicks decreasing and moved on. But DPReview, Newsshooter, CineD, you'd think they would run a story. Why not? It's the biggest development in the whole long overheating saga! That you can just go into the date menu, and pull the battery, and boom - no more overheating. They are completely silent and it makes me think Canon has sent some very disapproving nods in their direction that if they cover this they will rock the boat and they won't have friends in high places any more.

  16. Personally I find the idea of a crop between video modes unacceptable. There will be in all likelihood a S2H, and doubtless will remedy the issue as well as bring the benefits of improved focus. Or else there is the GH6. I'm reluctant though to invest in a new lens mount until I see what Panasonic has in store. At the moment, there is so much chatter over their future in the camera industry, will it still see a MFT GH5 successor, will there be ASPC models, will they continue to develop and inprove fullframe.. the hybrid line is frustrating me and given I shoot so little photos, I wonder if just focusing on video cameras, though you lose the small size that hybrids bring.

  17. It will be able to focus anything that can currently be focused with a single motor. Each lens is calibrated individually once (it takes about 2-3 minutes) and stored in the unit for later recall. In the case of the electronic lenses on BM cameras, the calibration is recalled automatically by lens when you power on or change lenses and for manual lenses with the motor option it will just be a case of recalling it from the list on screen.

  18. OK, great, what I thought then! FF or APSC for stills = check. APSC at all times for 4k 50p = check. Just waiting on a quote for all my Fuji and other gear and then it's L Mount Alliance here we come. It's offering me the closest to my needs out of anyone and also at the best cost to change. Which is a bonus.

    8K for 4000 or 400?

I have a full thread about how shooting 1080p is often sufficient, assuming your camera is good enough. There is a good argument to be made for shooting 4K in order to get good enough quality out of your camera as some cameras 1080p isn't that great. But so far all of the 8K smartphone videos I've seen unfortunately don't really make the grade when compared with decent 1080p.

    Panasonic GH6

It could be due to Panasonics shift to full-frame, or it could be a combination of other factors. By other factors, what I mean is: The GH4 was revolutionary, being one of the first affordable cameras to have 4K. The GH5 was revolutionary, in many ways but especially delivering 4K60 and 10-bit internal. If the GH6 is to uphold the reputation of the GH line then it would need to seriously step up and take on the competition, which leads me to... The competition being all over the place. The A7s3 release was delayed from the normal release schedule, and if rumours are true, was pulled from it launch event at the last minute because Sony weren't sure it would really hit the spot, leaving a huge fanfare for some lenses. The R5 came from no-where with 8K, after a strange release of the EOS R which seemed to be a big release but was underwhelming and quickly got a big discount. BM released the P6K, a "successor" to the P4K with a S35 sensor and an EF mount, which confused the heck out of everyone. BM then released the 12K UMP which was so left-field it was from a parallel dimension. So all in all, releases have been all over the place and unpredictable, because the market has been in the shadow of... The promise of 8K for the Olympics and now it's delayed because of.... COVID. No-one knows what impact COVID is going to have on the film-making market, especially the low-budget segment which MFT is more prevalent, so the best time to release a camera is pretty tricky thing to gauge. You'd have to be pretty courageous as an exec to pull the trigger on a huge production and release run during a pandemic, and especially one for an MFT camera because of the... Trend towards full-frame and even larger than FF with some "medium format" options in a few examples. This is a tremendously upsetting dynamic when S35 ruled the cinematography world for so long, and MFT only had a 1.4x crop compared to S35, whereas now it is considered a 2x crop at least. This makes MFT seem less palatable by an increasingly fanciful and fickle marketplace, where there is more and more focus on the flashy toys and less and less focus on steady workhorse cameras, and even the "quite market" of content creators is getting tempted by the allure of affordable RAW, which comes with all the... Legal trickiness of patents and licensing agreements and other big companies all playing chess with their lawyers at our expense. FF is but one element of a tornado of uncertainty.

  21. Lets wait on some test results from some users. Might be interested in the R6, if the overheating is solved. Otherwise I will go for an panasonic S5 I think. R5 is just too pricey, a7S III as well.

  22. 100% agree! It honestly seems like panasonic will update the s1 to outclass the s5. In all interviews and hints it seems likely itll get RAW externally and possibly even dci 4K internally We will find out soon, but im optimistic

  23. Exactly my thoughts as well. I prefer using Panasonic or Canon and Canon really blew it with the R5 and R6 for video shooters (I also just don't like the ergonomics and design of their RF mirrorless cameras). The C70 looks really interesting, but not sure it will be any better than the S1H, which is my favorite sub $15k camera/image I've ever used. But I have been reluctant to go full L-Mount due to the lack of a smaller camera I can use as a B-Cam and as my photography camera. But with the S5 and a small 24mm and 50mm coming out soon (hopefully by end of year?), I'm pretty stoked to have the S1H/S5 combo for the next few years at least. Now an L-Mount, full-frame EVA-2 needs to come very soon.

  25. I'm not speaking in absolutes, but some buy speedbosters to get shallower DOF or reduce the crop factor. That's why I said its an individual thing. I'm aware of the other aspects, but that's not what I was talking about. Yes there's no FF specific aesthetic, but there's no lens available that gets me the same thing I get with a 24/1.4 or 135/1.8 with smaller sensors. Aesthetic was just a poor choice of words for DOF at a given FOV. But again its an individual thing, I shoot with available light and I need photos for everything I shoot. For me FF has significant advantages over everything else, its the sweet spot of size/cost/IQ - for me. YMMV. Cheers Chris

    Panasonic in trouble?

Well, there's you go in regards to Olympus. Personally I'm still hoping they're gonna try to do a little Japanese corporate tap dancing and attempt to wiggle out of letting their camera division go...but that still doesn't excuse their numerous mistakes running the company.

  29. The other advantage Sony has with E-mount is they can coordinate the entire E-mount roadmap and strategy, under one roof. With L-mount, Panasonic, Sigma and Leica cannot collaborate fully over strategy due to antitrust laws. So if they both end up releasing a similar set of lenses or similar cameras that cannibalise each other, there's not much they can do about it. In my opinion Sigma would be wise to invest in more than one mirrorless mount. The SA2 mount I suggested to Kazuto in the interview could do really well, with adapters from SA2 to E-mount, L-mount, RF-mount, etc. It gives this range of lenses a unique selling point (buy one lens for multiple systems), to differentiate it from Panasonic L-mount lenses. Sigma were going to develop their own mirrorless mount anyway before the agreement was signed to use L-mount. Also Panasonic need to push like crazy on the camera side. GH6 should be L-mount and APS-C sensor. New cinema cameras with L-mount to compete with Sony FS cinema line. They really need to up the investment.

    Panasonic GH6

We should have had a GH6 by now; the fact we don't is down to Panasonic's shift to fullframe. Maybe they feel they have exhausted what is possible with MFT, or at least in relation to what they can market well. It would be a shame to see the GH line end, but it feels only a matter of time. The writing is on the wall. Whether we get one more GH is the best we can hope for, and I am not sure if even that is going to happen.

  31. The CPU's topside thermal pad was still stuck to the aluminium plate in the Chinese disassembly: Continuing the disassembly, there is another thermal pad right under the CPU PCB leading heat to the larger metal plate on the underside. In addition to the top- and bottomside plates, the copper layers of the PCB itself conduct heat from the components.

  32. If Panasonic would only give some freebies for the S1 users, 10bit VLOG please, 4k60 10bit please. Thank you. 25p in 6K photomode. Thank you super much, Panny! A rigged GH5 is still an indiecinema beast. But that image quality from the Lumix S series is just another league. But is that so? I filmed some very spiffy stuff this weekend and I am amazed again about the material shot with the GH5 if applying some digital diffusion in post. Great looking image. But, S series is indeed in another league. Now, that update for the S1 would make me keep mine and buy a S5 later. 🙂

  33. I am getting goosebumps only by thinking this. It’s the only established company right now that prioritizes usability and reliability on low cost hybrids. I am going to buy the S5 and ignore the R6 and whatever Sony will announce this month.

My S1 gets more exposure for sure. I think F3 owners should do a F3 challenge. What kind of challenge could that be. Footage looks awesome no matter what. No challenge there.;) @Antoin e Hey, would love to see your video! Stills look lovely.
