Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating timers, workarounds, and Magic Lantern

Just confirmed that the Date change "hack" is still live with New firmware on R5.6 points -
YouTuber Christian Maté Grab recently posted this video, which I think is very interesting, is hugely authentic, and quite frankly, brave. He talks about shooting footage for yourself, for no pre-defined or pre-imagined purpose, just of things that happen in your normal life. This is what he's called "C-Roll". He talks about how he has recently struggled with quite debilitating mental health issues / depression and the roll that C-Roll played in helping him recover from that state. The idea isn't new to those of us old enough to remember film cameras (he's probably not) and to a certain extent he's just discovered home videos, but I think it's an interesting and important point for those of us who may have adapted to only thinking of shooting for commercial purposes or for likes and followers, especially as the world gets crazier with the hype of social media and the slow but inevitable upset of basically the entire film-making and professional video industry. Here's the video: Do you shoot personal footage?5 points

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
Video Hummus and 2 others reacted to MrSMW for a topic
Well I have done an about turn which went from initially being interested in the S5 to less interested to moving to it as my primary stills and filming workhorse. In 20 years, I have only made one brand switch and that was 9 years ago from Nikon to Fuji. Now it's Fuji to Panasonic (S5) + Sigma (FP) and all being well, a pair of S5's. There's enough there to convince me it will suit my specific needs and do 'more' than my current Fuji system can do. Pre-ordered the S5 (just one to start with to make sure with my own tests it suits my needs) with the 20-60mm 'kit' lens for initial testing before relegating that lens to wide angle duties, plus the bonus of a free Sigma 45mm f2.8 which will be going on a used FP when I have the funds in a month or so to buy one. 'Holy Grail' camera? Nah... Canon R5 without heating issues and maybe even R6 are 'better' as is the Sony A7S3 and undoubtedly the A74 whenever that pops up. And maybe even the Nikon Z6S, but all things considered (and there are many things unique to each of us), I think both this camera and the entire 'L' system are going to suit my needs very well for the next few years.3 points -

EOS R5 + R6 Firmware Version 1.1.1
Juank and one other reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I know I'm just one customer and Canon obviously couldn't care less about my business but I know I had planned on replacing the GH5 with the R6, replacing the 5DIV with the R5 and eventually replacing the C200 with an RF mount equivalent along with RF mount lenses over the next 2-3yrs...so I'd say they lost around $60K of my business so far. As it stands now, if a GH6 comes out I'll use it as a b-cam to my C200, keep the GH5 and use it as a c-cam.2 points -
Iirc, various computer graphics cards operate at well over 65 degrees C, with peak temperatures over 80 degrees C not unheard of. So Canon is at least being very conservative in their 'safeguards'. as well as really sloppy in their management of the recovery times, because those seem entirely disconnected from the actual temperatures. Imho, this festering uncertainly does maximal harm to Canon. They would have been better off to say up front that the R5 was not a tool for professionals, people who should be using a C300, but just a stopgap for use in a pinch. Now there is the impression that the entire product line is an elaborate scam, with features blocked or included because of marketing dictates, rather than engineering and economics. As Intel has discovered, that approach works until it does not, but then it is a long way back...2 points

Shooting "C-Roll" and mental health

I love getting out and doing this. I have so many bits and pieces from over the years that don’t have a rhyme or reason. I think it’s super important to the creative part of your mind, to keep up on the craft for the love of the crafts sake. Otherwise it gets stale really fast. People do this with music all of the time, pick up your instrument and just play. We need to remember to do it with video too.2 points -

A YouTuber that does this basically full time is Trout & Coffee. He shoots really authentic stuff with his phone, GoPro, and I suspect an old 5DM3 or something (the video quality isn’t great) but his stories are, and that’s the meat of it right there. He doesn’t care about AF loosing focus. Doesn’t care about lack of DR or getting the perfect shot or the most cinematic angles. Doesn’t talk about gear at all. He captures things raw and its honestly my favorite channel because its a total breathe of fresh air from all the overly serious, overly produced, overly shot and edited stuff out there. It has changed my perspective. He shoots what Christian calls “C-Roll” as his style and his choice and makes money doing it with ads on instagram for lots of different brands. Creators allow YouTube to bend their will to its needs. It should be the other way around. If you enjoy vintage things, cabins, nature, good stories, campfires and canoe trips and a bit of Buddhism sprinkling here and there then I would recommend his channel.2 points -
My cameras get butchered out on the field, they are hardly sellable once they've had a few years with me. Buying new gear is part to replace worn out gear and partly to add new features that make my work easier and more to my taste.2 points

Fuji X-T4
63degreesnorth and one other reacted to dgvro for a topic
I've used the XH1 and now own an XT4. The XT4 is definitely just... better when it comes to IBIS. I found the XH1 to be sickeningly bad for the way I shoot, I had to get rid of it asap. Those little quantised jumps in sensor movement were destroying shot after shot. The XT4 has similar but more well-controlled issues I suppose. It's not up there with Panasonic IBIS though (not like GH5 anyway). You're right about the planes of movement thing, this is the key with Fuji IBIS I guess. It just can't handle any sort of movement in more than one plane at a time. Tilt while panning? You'll get tiny jerks and catch-up movements in the stabilisation. Likewise strafing or raising the position of the whole camera in space while panning or tilting. You have to be very deliberate with the XT4 handheld movements. I never use the DIS digital stab. The IS Boost seems to be okay, to be honest I can't tell the difference in what that's doing half the time. It's performance may have been altered a bit in one of the firmware updates and I'm just confused about its efficacy now at this point. Something about the XT4 footage stabilises pretty nicely in post, thankfully. Maybe the good performance for rolling shutter is important there. Stick (in DaVinci Resolve anyway) to the straightforward 'translation' type stabilisation and you can avoid the dreaded "warpy shit". So if you're happy enough to polish your footage after that way, you'll get perfectly great results with the XT4 IBIS, yes. Especially with a heavier setup, I guess. The codecs are really great. I'm delighted with how well they hold up in terms of noise and dynamic range. They playback/edit fairly well for h265 and all too on my laptop.2 points -
We can start the discussion from possible many angles indeed... let alone the customary DOF or use of slower glass and strictly going from a low light perspective?1 point

Nice post Kai. Of course I also love to roll through old material of the way things were. Often it does have value. But (as we know) there is a profound sickness (narcissism?) unfolding in and around the need to capture (archive) our lives. I guess it comes down to intention. If it's mindless vacant crap done to stroke the ego via social media, then I balk. But this is larger than just me, so who am I to say... and I do understand the underlying need to connect which is human enough. But then, it becomes about 'what' is being shared. And then of course, there is the 'profitibility' side of things which is a huge loaded gun... as our biosphere heaves and groans. I actually feel sorry for the guy in the clip. There literally tens of thousands of these guys who all look the same, sound the same though they see themselves as unique and special. If it were up to me, I would send him to live with the Papuans for a decade to unlearn what he has. And of course... no camera allowed. But that's no answer either 😉1 point -

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2020/09/investigating-the-canon-r5-heat-emission/#comment-5065269671 The only heat issue I see is the CF card getting hot enough to potentially harm someone when handling it(there's regulations for this type of stuff). As noted in the article, the EXIF reported a peak of around 63c, and they didn't observe any components reaching such temperature. The hottest spot was the CF slot after the update, it hit 57c and the card was 52c. The sensor was 48c.1 point -
This is a surprisingly meaningful video. Makes me think about life. My girlfriend and I used to shoot videos just for fun. Very silly stuffs, really. We knew nothing about videography so the videos are just bad. This changed after we do video professionally. We don't shoot those silly videos anymore. We only shoot paid jobs and testings. It's like we have forgotten making videos are not always about work. Making videos are not fun anymore most of the time. Maybe that can help with my depression. Who knows?1 point

$43K USD....and here I thought the Inspire 2 was expensive. It still doesn't look that integrated to me, they just took two existing products and did the work needed to make them talk together. A truly integrated solution is the Inspire, Phantom, and Mavic lines. I used to own an Inspire but it was overkill for the work I do, the huge case, poor battery life, poor wind performance (no one mentions that an Inspire flying in a cross wind is less stable than a P4 in the same crosswind), and setup time weren't worth the increase in image quality that none of my clients were willing to pay for.1 point -
No you would be too happy if it was the case right ahah. Little brother let it fell off... Thank you, im going to check this but i really don't know if there is such a thing where i live, i already did some soldering myself on small parts like this but this seem very tricky this time, might have to buy an other one but that's ok, i reaally want to use the f3 at its best again.1 point

Theh could still produce a lot of expensive high quality lenses for MFT if only they wanted. F1.7-2 zooms, 1.0 primes with AF, more wide angle stuff, etc.1 point -
Just poking fun.. people get so absolute and polarised. FF is either unusable or non-FF images are unsaleable! Brand X either has garbage CS or mandatory CS! We've lost the nuance of saying that everything has pros and cons. Even if someone offered me an Alexa 65, I still couldn't use it because it's too big and heavy for what I do and I'd be nervous about it getting stolen, so I have my GH5. Is my GH5 perfect? Hell no. So, the correct answer to every question is "it depends", except for questions about something being mandatory or usable, in which case, nothing is mandatory because everything has a work-around, and everything is usable, in some situation at least.1 point

I do not think that is the case. While Sony is the owner, the semi- conductor business is run apart from the camera business and Sony semiconductor will sell sensors to ANYONE. Sony USED to be the major shareholder in Olympus but sold out not so long ago (they must have seen the writing on the wall). Sony still owns about ten percent of Tamron.1 point

Some observations from my test today... I am making a video of the workaround, erm, working. Sometimes you need two tries at the battery pull. First clock change and battery pull wouldn't reset. At one point CFExpress overheated and started throttling so after a few seconds of 8K, camera showed "Slow write speed" error. Had to take card out and let it cool for 1-2 mins. Be careful with those roasting hot CFexpress cards. SDXC strongly recommended for longer recordings.1 point -

Sony Semicon imposes strict licensing restrictions, one of these restrictions is that certain sensors can only be put in specific products (eg. mobile phone only). This is why drone cameras from Autel/DJI have only recently started using the more than 3 years old IMX586 sensor.1 point -

My bet is "video" will be trying to make inroads on volume/growth opportunities like surveillance cameras and the automotive world. Supposedly the auto industry was on track for about 150 million cameras for automotive use this year before COVID, which is double the volume from just a couple years ago. I doubt they're buying Olympus to make a significant investment in an entirely new product segment for a small slice of a rapidly declining market, while also pledging to make a profit. They're going to leave high end video cameras to the likes of Canon, Sony and Panasonic. Just like Nikon and Fuji. Just my opinion. Chris1 point -

It will be able to focus anything that can currently be focused with a single motor. Each lens is calibrated individually once (it takes about 2-3 minutes) and stored in the unit for later recall. In the case of the electronic lenses on BM cameras, the calibration is recalled automatically by lens when you power on or change lenses and for manual lenses with the motor option it will just be a case of recalling it from the list on screen.1 point

dellfonic reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
I'm not speaking in absolutes, but some buy speedbosters to get shallower DOF or reduce the crop factor. That's why I said its an individual thing. I'm aware of the other aspects, but that's not what I was talking about. Yes there's no FF specific aesthetic, but there's no lens available that gets me the same thing I get with a 24/1.4 or 135/1.8 with smaller sensors. Aesthetic was just a poor choice of words for DOF at a given FOV. But again its an individual thing, I shoot with available light and I need photos for everything I shoot. For me FF has significant advantages over everything else, its the sweet spot of size/cost/IQ - for me. YMMV. Cheers Chris1 point -

For me it's not necessary but it comes down to the lenses I'm investing in. At this time I'm not willing to buy any glass that doesn't cover full frame.
