Canon EOS R5/R6 user experience
Video Hummus and 2 others reacted to ntblowz for a topic
Will let you know after the race this weekend. My EF lens running pretty good on R, R5 should be even better. DR wise I feel my S5 will trump R5 until clog3 update.3 points -
This gives us an idea of what to look forward to with the GH6. The BGH1 is a lot actually smaller and lighter than the GH5. https://photorumors.com/2020/09/30/panasonic-dc-bgh1-mft-camera-specifications-leaked-10mp-c4k60p/ DC-BGH1 10.28 MP sensor Micro Four Thirds mount C4K60P 4:2:2 10-bit RAW video (HDMI output), C4K60P 4:2:0 10-bit (H.265 / HEVC) internal recording Dual native ISO Double SD card slot Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 11800mAh VBR battery compatible Dimensions: 93 x 93 x 78mm Weight: 545g2 points

So here’s a quick iPhone snap of my new stills and manual focus video unit (the S5) and my old but repurposed XT3 with battery grip plus Fringer plus Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 which is my ‘new’ static manual focus video camera and occasional autofocus (because I do not yet trust the S5 and may never do so). Battery grip with the XT3 because it needs so it has some power and can record for more than 20 mins (albeit 30 max) and for the ergos those very rare times it will be handheld. 500g which is nearly a lb in old money difference in weight and obviously the XT3 combo is a lot bigger in the hand.2 points

Andrew Reid interview on Golden Hour Podcast AMA

Hey guys! I’m about to interview our very own @Andrew Reidon my podcast Golden Hour! Reply with any questions you have for him and I’ll try to get them in the show!1 point -
I am pretty sure if I had not gone for the Panny S5, I would have gone for the Z6s/Z6ii or whatever they are going to call it. The S1’s were/are too big for me and the Sony’s might be competent and the continual Canon shenanigans don’t endear me to their brand. Bottom line is the quality of both stills and video does it for me with Panny and any other issues are a workaround. I agree though, the lenses are not there yet. At least not from Panny alone plus they are a bit big. The Leica options are beyond my pay grade though there are some interesting Sigma options. In November, there will be the first of the new f1.8’s in 85mm flavour and a target for me, followed by I think 24, 35 and a 50? But I digress and wanted to say I like Nikon’s 1.8 line up for Z Mount. The 20mm, 35mm and 85mm would have been all I ever needed or wanted. What was missing for me with the original Z was twin card slots and 4K 60p internal, 10 bit, preferably 422, but 420 would have been OK. Otherwise I’d have gone back to Nikon in 2019. I really hope they don’t cock this up as we don’t really need another fiasco, - too much drama in and out of the industry!1 point

What does that mean/how does it work? I guess it means you can assign the video sensor crop ('Image Area of Video' in user guide speak) setting to a function button.1 point

Right, tried it and like it. Fine detail is another league to Lightroom. Another league. In order to get the most out of Fuji X files, I have been batch editing the raws through Iridient X Transformer which then demosaics them in some 'special' way and then spits out a set of DNG's. It's slightly laborious as it takes around 2 hours for say a 500 image wedding. I then work these in LR which then chucks them out as finished Jpegs. Well I just tried a few images in Rawtherapee and did nothing but import the raw files and told it to export them as large Jpegs at the default settings. I then imported this Jpeg alongside the original large Panny Jpeg and holy moly, night and day. I thought LR was allegedly not doing so well with the fine detail with Fuji, but it looks like with at least Panny as well. The only downside to this is I'd need to batch approx 500 raws through Rawtherapee and then into LR as I have a special sauce preset for my 'look'. Lot's of playing to do over the Winter and I'm not going to jump wholesale into anything else right now, partly because I don't have another wedding until April '21 soonest and partly because it will be interesting to see how Panny raw files do in LR directly when Adobe gets it's finger out. But thanks indeed for the heads up on Rawtherapee! Apologies for the non-video (but S5) talk folks!1 point
-
There's only one thing bothering me right now (apart from the weather that is preventing me from getting out and shooting) and that is the raw files not opening in LR. I've tried a Windows 10 compatible exif data changer but my test file is still reading DC-S5 even though I keep changing it to DC-S1 or DC-S1H. I have never tried changing Exif data before so don't really know what I'm doing but if anyone knows, until Adobe get on it, should I be trying to change the Exif data or trying to convert it to a .DNG file? Hey @ntblowz your S5 looks just like my S5!1 point

Panasonic GH6
PannySVHS reacted to Amazeballs for a topic
Remember that you can Z-cam with 4k160, RAW and WDR for 1500$, so Panasonic need to answer that.1 point -
This could be interesting. It probably tries to steal sales from P4K and Z cameras, but we have to see the whole unit, maybe it is just another failed Panasonic half-right experiment with the GH5S sensor. External raw means nothing to me. Either have it internal, or not at all. Sorry, that's what I think. 4-2-0 internal? 4K/60p is just right for me, I have used 120 frames a couple of times the last 5 years, and I used to do high speed clips for TV ads at one point (specialized cameras of course). Timecode and audio I/O will be very important for this cam. ND? It seems like a very low cost version of an GH5S, I just wished for a XC or C70 design, that would be perfect, the boxy thing has some limitations. I would like to see a specialized m43 video cam competing against the C70 for half the price. That would be my market, and I can live with. I am expecting the usual Panasonic AF crap. Too many unknowns for now. To be Continued..1 point
-
Actually the GH5s had issues because Panasonic couldn't push the full VLog on it, it's highest VFR wasn't exploited, and a few other compromises. The issues is not so much with the sensors as with how it's being programmed (and what levels the dual gain is also set at, among a host of other things). Also, the BMPCC 4k and 6k are within 0.2 stops of each other, in terms of base Dynamic Range, and the 4k has much better Dynamic Range at higher ISOs. If this sensor is programmed and wired properly, it should theoretically outperform the Pocket 4k, which is very impressive, to say the least. Let's hope Panasonic don't even think of VLog L. Or some other rubbish. Also, we should, hopefully get 4k at atleast 120fps (240fps, if possible), and the 2nd ISO should be set at $6400, so that it can be pushed for even better low light. Would actually love dual Canon and Alexa's dual gain, but it may be too late to incorporate it into the ADC.1 point

Canon Cinema EOS C70 - Ah that explains it then!
maxmizer reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I definitely know its value....I think my problem is getting customers that agree with me and are willing to pay for it. That's a major problem in my area, customers who want everything for nothing and they all seem to have a friend who just bought a camera that will do it for free. But...I digress, that's another rant for another day. The C70 does look fantastic, it still feels too much like a C200 replacement for me vs. a GH5 replacement.1 point -

Yes, I wish this stayed unlocked for a bit longer (a whole 24hrs would be good). Is nicer to just add something to a post a few minutes later rather than create a whole new post. Also I wish the posts would auto merge like they used to do! For instance I posted this comment almost instantly after my previous one yet rather than merging these two together, it had them be two separate posts. Yes! Agreed! Any color but blue please...1 point

You can see how easily a camera can justify having a price an extra two grand higher (convenience factor + quality VND cost + spares + adapters) just simply by having internal NDs, let alone any other additional feature in the C70!1 point
-
Point taken ... I do not use variables ... buy a set of decent NDs and meter the scene ... If your ND adds a shift to green ... throw it away ... get one with hard stops and decent color.1 point

Not sure about that. That's 3 bits of colour-tainted polarised glass before the light even hits the front of the lens. I'm not keen!1 point

Canon Cinema EOS C70 - Ah that explains it then!
IronFilm reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I think most of the cinema cameras from most of the big companies don't have it. I know the EVA1 and FS7 have it but I don't think the Reds, Arris, etc. have it or the FS9. With Canon you don't get a digital spirit level until the C700. I had something similar happen, I had a beach scene in the middle of the day for a music video and used a variable ND filter that I had tested the day before and was sure it was up to the job. After shooting the scene and loading the footage into DR there was a distinctive x pattern in the footage. Nothing I did would completely remove it. In my previous day's testing the sun wasn't as bright as at the beach so I hadn't needed to turn the ND filter up that far. Long story short I sent the customer the completed video, did what I could in the color grade to try to remove the x, and waited for the negative feedback. Turns out she loved it and no one has ever said anything about it. The worst part about it is I have no way of preventing it from happening again unless I buy another variable ND filter or switch to fixed filters. I have to just guess at where the pattern starts to show and it is impossible to see until after the LUT is applied in post. This particular ND filter does not have hard stops so I can't even mark where it starts to show. Now I use it only as a last resort for events and use fixed ND filters for music videos. Onboard ND filters are amazing and I still smile as I push the ND filter button on my C200. People who dismiss the onboard ND filters as adding major value to a camera have probably never used them. I still might cancel my C70 pre-order, at least until work picks back up; the camera will still be available. Maybe the R6 will have improved to the point to where it is viable again (who am I kidding), now that Panasonic has seen everything that is coming out they can make the GH6 even better, or maybe the C50 is really all I need at a lower price point.1 point -
The value of internal ND for run and gun documentary film making cannot be overstated, imho. Just Monday I was shooting doc footage in communities ravaged wildfire. Having to constantly clean the VND, swap it between lenses, fight with its compatibility with different lens hoods, and realize I don't yet have a step up ring for a new lens I wanted to use. Talk about a PITA when I'm constantly moving and trying to get critical shots. I'd say internal ND is worth close to a grand, easy. A good VND is several hundred bucks; you probably need at least two to cover the range you want, and are you going to buy multiple copies so you don't always have to swap between lenses? I didn't realize that C-series bodies don't have an electronic level. That's a huge bummer.1 point

IronFilm reacted to herein2020 for a topic
Am I the only one who misses the electronic level found in most MILCs and DSLRs? I don't understand why it is missing from the C200 and I would assume it is also missing from the C70. I religiously use the level in my GH5 to double check my gimbal horizon and when setting up on a tripod especially since I offer real estate video tours where a level horizon is critical. It's so annoying to pay $5500+ for a body and not get this basic functionality.1 point -

At present I only have the 20-60mm kit lens. It’s quite impressive actually and will principally be my wide angle for stills. Pretty dreadful in low light at the long end being just f5.6 however! Not that I will ever use it like that... I should have the Sigma 45mm f2.8 but Panasonic are so far refusing to honor the preorder offer. Also refusing to even correspond in regard to it which is totally bizarre as all my communications have been extremely polite... But that aside, my plan is the 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 next Spring. Pretty sure that for my needs they will be the sweet spot for size, weight, shallow enough DOF and price, plus being native, play the nicest with the AF!1 point

No need for ignorant bigotry. The notion that camera people got work in the 1980s by owning cameras couldn't be further from the truth. "Hiring for gear" didn't happen in a big way until digital cameras appeared, especially the over-hyped ones -- a lot of newbie kids got work from owning an early RED or Alexa. To this day, clueless producers still demand RED. Back in 1980's (and prior), the camera gear was almost always rented if it was a 16mm or 35mm shoot. Sure, there were a few who owned a Bolex or a CP-16 or 16S, or even an NPR with decent glass, but it was not common. Owning such a camera had little bearing on getting work, as the folks who originated productions back then were usually savvy pros who understood the value of hiring someone who actually knew what they were doing. In addition, camera rentals were a standard line-item in the budget. Of course, there was also video production, and Ikegami and Sony were the most sought-after brands by camera people in that decade. Likewise, not too many individuals owned hi-end video cameras, although a small production company might have one or two. Today, any idiot who talks a good game can get a digital camera and an NLE and succeed by making passable videos. However, 99% of the digital shooters today couldn't reliably load a 100' daylight spool.1 point -

Well I shoot roughly 60% stills and 40% video, so for me, somewhat obviously, a stills orientated camera is a must, but if I was shooting pure video, pretty sure I'd be shooting a dedicated video style camera and not compromising in certain areas with a hybrid.1 point
-
Yup, that's it. But one thing to note that you may not be aware of. Panasonic makes the most customizable cameras of all manufacturers. I routinely switch between APS-C and FF crop in both stills and video with the press of a button. Or you could use C1 for stills and C2 for video. You most definitely can make the camera do what you want, but it will be harder deciding which way you want to do it! 😃1 point

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
IronFilm reacted to Trankilstef for a topic
Waiting for this. I saw an EVA1 on mpb.com being sold for 3600€ with only 70 hours of running time! I was about to buy it but decided to wait a bit, as I needed more a little b-cam to my S1H than a bigger cam. But as my video business is going up, I may have needs for a bigger cam later so I don't have to rent anymore, so an EVA-2 would be very interesting.1 point -

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
IronFilm reacted to herein2020 for a topic
For me the S5 is dead to me because of the lens mount. The cost of the body would be reasonable all the way up to around $2300USD to me, but having to buy new glass just gives me a headache. That's why I would much rather that a GH6 were released....I'd be willing to buy a new body if that was the only cost. But for me to spend upwards of $6K (body plus a few lenses) it will need to have better AF, and be useable as a true hybrid camera like I thought the R6 would be. I don't know why I still somehow think Canon will "fix" the R6, but that is my hope.1 point -
Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
IronFilm reacted to Amazeballs for a topic
I still think Panasonic needs to price this camera down close to 1500$ and not 2000$ Mainly due to not having a competitive AF. Than comes 4k60 in APC-S only. If the new Sony A7C has FF 4k60 and sells a bit over 2000, than it would be extremely hard for Pana to compete with that. Another problem - absence of cheap 1.8 lenses. Sony has the best FF lens lineup currently. If Canon fixes their overheating scam (or ML does it for them), then R6 is another strong competitor.1 point -
No offense, but I never understand these ‘feel a bit cheated’ comments every time a new camera comes out. New camera should = new & improved spec even with ‘cheaper’ models as tech is both passed down and improved upon. The S1 has been out over a year I think which though is not that long, you can’t really be peeved at Panasonic for bringing out a new camera for the end of 2020?1 point
-
You may have no enthusiasm for the low end of the FF market, but that's wear most of the FF sales happen! It is wise for Nikon to get themselves a slice of that pie, and even grow the market. We applaud the likes of Blackmagic or Z Cam when they bring us cheap goods (even with all their flaws) at ever low prices, why can't we show the same respect to Nikon when they launch the best ever sub $1.5K mirrorless FF camera? Am glad to see Nikon offering us bargain choices! May they deliver many more new products like this. What's next, a Nikon Z40 that gives us 4K DCI 60fps with IBIS for the same price as an a6100/M50?? So what if it is still 8bit, so what if it still has a 30 minute record limit, I'd still be very happy to see such a "Nikon Z40" camera! Yes, the camera snobs will turn up their noses at it because it isn't 8K raw, but this "Nikon Z40" would sell like hotcakes.1 point
-
Doesn't really matter when they came out, that's the price segment that Nikon is aiming at. (plus remember that the release RRP will only last a handful of months, the street price will drop lower at some point in the near future) Sony has a strategy of keeping their older cameras around to sell at low low prices to grab the low end market share, as they're doing with the old a7mk2. (and heck, Canon does the same too! Just look at how many older Canon Rebel models are still being sold) There is nothing at all wrong with Nikon coming out with a band new fresh model to target the same low end market share. In fact this is a GOOD THING they're doing it with newly designed model, I'd rather have a 2020 design than a 2015 design. Like @David Bowgett said: When you look at the Nikon Z5's competition, I feel like the Z5 has the potential to be a smash hit for Nikon. As quite simply there is no better FF mirrorless camera on the market today that you can buy new with a RRP of sub $1.5K Read again what David said, Nikon didn't "match specs" here! Nikon crushed their competition. (in this particular market segment)1 point

Have you actually used prores raw in Z6? It has far less issues than presented by some youtubers. And I find AF on native lenses very good in video mode. In fact I was shooting on 2 cameras, Canon C200 beside Z6, and AF is actually tracking better on Z6. Believe it or not. No hunting, smooth transition. They really made those S lenses great for video. There's really little not to like about them. Lack of linear focus is the only thing I can think of. Maybe people judge too much by the looks these days? They might lack solid look (although I dig it), hence they are not good?1 point
