  1. Wow, no love for IBIS today? I couldn't go back to a non-IBIS camera. I shoot lots of B roll of people who've never been on camera before and will be gone away in a minute, doing things. IBIS means I can shoot handheld and get three different steady shots from different angles while directing the person(s) in the same amount of time it would take me to get one shot on a tripod. I don't use it as a substitute for a dolly, slider or gimbal. I still remember my horror at the shaky jello of my first handheld shots on the 5D Mk 2!

  2. I use my GH5s more than the GH5. IBIS is one of those tools that can be overrated in its importance. I found it made me lazy with my shots as I relied too much on it. Its no longer a deal breaker for me in choosing a camera.

  3. When they add the lower bitrate Canon RAW Lite to the R5, it would be great if they added it for the APSC mode (5.1K) and up to 60p.

  4. I've also come to the conclusion that IBIS is less important for me than I thought. Tripods, sliders and dollys looks better, and I usually have the opportunity to use them. I've been eyeing the Z-Cam's for quite a while, but given the choice I would rather pick up a new Panasonic if they provide similar specs because of the reliability Panasonic has shown. The GH5s sensor is good enough for me anyway, but I'm curious to see the final specs.

  5. This video kinda confirms what I see.. Panasonic Vlog is the most robust codec so far, can be over and under exposure and still can get away, Sony you will have to use non log profile to have "clean" lowlight, underexposed slog is so ugly.

  6. I gotta stop using my cell phone and use my studio setup more, when publishing stuff... smh. I just had Premiere publish it straight after the export, since I was rushing out the door. Then I checked it quick on the road with my phone, and it looked fine. It wasn't until someone mentioned the blacks and the AUTO option, and I checked it as soon as I was back in studio and was about horrified, lol. I've never used AUTO before and didn't know what damage it could do, but I also didn't want to do my own interpretive grade. I think if you naturally focus on the brighter area's there was quite a bit of white and highlight detail, maybe they were also on cell phones. No clue, I'm just glad we caught it. I'm still looking for the most neutral corrective grade beyond the Leeming corrective (since just doing that produces a dark image). Any suggestions? Something repeatable that most would agree is as neutral and plain of a starting point as possible.

  7. I think I’ll get the g7 as a second angle for interviews during covid but once things go back to normal I’ll happy pick up another s5 as I’ve got a few more pressing issues. Thanks for the advice, second S5 in spring when most of the events I do are back hopefully

So the rumored specs are: 30MP BSI CMOS Sensor (IMX 554 DQC) BIONZ X Image Processor Continuous shooting speed @ 15FPS, 10 FPS AF/AE UHD 4K60p with HLG & S-Log3 Gammas Full HD 120fps vari-angle articulating screen 3.69m-dot Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder Dual SD memory card slots USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C, micro-USB port, 3.5mm microphone input Magnesium alloy chassis NP-FZ100 battery I would prefer this camera over A7S3 for couple of reasons: - price (it should be in 2000-2500$ ballpark) - 30 mp sensor vs 12, which gives me better photo, better 4k and most importantly apc-s crop mode for video. - I dont really need 4k120 that much - I dont need killer evf of A7S3, I rarely use it

  9. Ah don't need the explanation after all. Better remember to log out of your shill account before posting with your main account next time @Hangs4Fun

  11. Yep, you're so right and why the P4K is my A camera to the GH5s B camera. However the GH5s came first and is still a very useful 2nd camera. Plenty value the GH5s even over the GH5.

  12. IBIS is a godsend if you're filming sports, documentary, etc. When I first started out I used big S-VHS and VHS cameras; stabilization was never an issue because of the weight and the cameras were shoulder cams. As cameras got smaller, stabilization became more and more of an issue for my kind of work. I can't just stand still, I have to constantly be on the move. When you're rushing to make sure you get a good shot of the action, you NEED good IBIS otherwise your shot will look awful. If everything you do is on a tripod, gimbal or monopod then that's different, obviously. But if you're doing real run and gun, stripped down handheld video then IBIS is huge. I'd much rather have it than not.

  13. The GH5s came out like 8-9 months before the Pocket 4k. And that's not including any shipping delays or waiting lists etc. I bet there are many who shot for over a year with the GH5s before they could get their hands on the P4k.

  14. Ironically there are many like myself who were buying hybrids not because we needed to take photos, but because we wanted a small, cheap video camera that had interchangeable lenses and a good quality image. In this, the GH5s succeeds and why I value it. I think some were comparing the GH5s to a hybrid... and judged its success accordingly. It was always more a niche item that catered to some users who were shooting only video.

  15. IBIS and Cinematic Footsge have almost nothing to do with each other. The whackos at top gear used a camera with IBIS and then used it for shots in a car where they probably did terrain that was probably inundated with stones and pebbles and the microjitters sent the camera into a tizzy. I am guessing even OIS lenses must have produced some sort of warped wobble (though way less prominent than IBIS), and the footage needed some stabilization in post, regardless. IMHO all IBIS should have locking mechanisms for the stabilization and the amount of stabilization needs more precise control. In many situations like handholding a shot, especially where you need a tripod equivalent (not all those shots that require a stabilizer for running, or doing pans and tilts etc), IBIS is way better than actually setting up a tripod shot. Tripod shots look super boring. Handheld shorts have a certain cinematic feel, because they feel a lot more engaging and realistic. Tilts and pans and other movements on trolleys and rigs obviously have another level of cinematic feel. But they require quite a lot of time for bei nbf setup. Hybrid cameras have been designed with quick turnaround and more vertalitiy in mind. Reigging is always time consuming. Plus, in all manner of photography (as opposed to videography), IBIS ensures way sharper photos at almost all frame rates, except perhaps 1/125 and higher. For the longest, Olymous cameras offered the equivalent of Google Pixel's Night Shot, merely by letting users push shutter speeds as low as 2-3 seconds (some people claim even longer) that would never be possible for anything that lacked IBIS. IBIS also compensates for lighter cameras. The S5 is lighter and I am guessing that is the biggest reason for the much less effective IBIS on it. @IronFilmthe issue with GH5s is that it is purely a video camera, lacking both IBIS AND a higher MP count, so never succeeded as a hybrid. It obviously has other advantages like better low light, higher dynamic range and faster readout.

  16. It looks great! I like the colors. The A7s3 is too much for me and my needs. What are you going to do with it? Are you going to put this video on your website, maybe as a video background of sorts? Where was that taken? It looks like there are some good trails and photo/video opportunities.

  18. one of these beasties then. To be honest my kit lens doesn't get a lot of love. 9 time out of ten there is a m42 adapted to the canon or on the p4k. Although some years ago i did buy a katzeye microprism screen for the canon kinda shows you i tend to like my mf 😀 I also find mf on the 18-55 a bit ordinary even a touch rough. the af works fine however. i just dont use it much.

  19. Same with me, went from GH5 to Zcam, no IBIS, I felt my work looked better without. IBIS is like that little thing you think you need when you first get it but really you don't.

  20. Yeah if this is just a temporary stop gap measure until you get a second S5, then a cheapie G7 is a smart idea until work picks up.

  21. Don't think it was a blunder, the GH5S made sense, Panasonic got to reuse the GH5 body design (saving R&D) while trying out a new sensor (that couldn't handle IBIS in that version) which got to cater to even more new customers. (and gets to forever shut up those "but you got to use FF for lowlight!" from the babbling FF fanboys)

  22. love this idea, I will get the g7 as my tripod interview and one of mutlicam cameras and comeback for a g9 later. Yes I really want to pair the 50-200mm with the g9 hopefully next year

  23. I watched your first grade of the footage and I thought there might be something wrong with my monitor, as I simply couldn't see how someone might say it looked good. The slider work was excellent though. Then, I saw this footage and I find it looks much better.

  24. Actually it appears to be a broadcast camera, with a few filmmaking skills (new VLog L with 1 stop higher dynamic range) thrown in. Also missing IBIS? I am guessing they're going after the Top Gear crowd that caused the blunder of the GH5s in the first place?

  26. Well it is official for me, I'm going to return it. I probably won't even keep it past the weekend. The countdown timer is completely unbearable; shooting video with this camera feels like one of those outdoor shoots where it can rain any minute and ruin the shoot; except this is how it will be every time I use it. It can't replace my GH5, 5D4, or C200, and it can't even be a reliable C cam so it has no place in my gear bag. Just shooting BTS footage today with a mixture of clips and photos and I managed to get the overheat timer down to 5min. I tried changing the date and pulling the battery but the time remaining didn't change. To my touch the body was barely warm and the ambient temp was around 78F. The only good news is that the overheat timer did seem to recover pretty quickly after the camera was turned off, it went back up to 10min within a few min of being turned off. This is with FW 1.1.1. I think calling the R6 a hybrid is generous when its video features are less reliable than my 4yr old 5DIV. Basically for me this camera will never pay for itself, and I will always need to bring something else as a backup if it is a true hybrid session so there's no point in keeping it. I know this thread is supposed to be about the user experience and not the overheating but in real world hybrid use the overheating ruined the user experience for me.

    Sony A7S III

Ironically, I am shooting at a brewery today, lol. Doing an OktoberFest, plus some B Roll for an upcoming commercial and interview series. I'm scrambling, I think my capture is good, just have a lot of work to do with the 10bit footage in post (I have not worked with much 10bit 4:2:2 before now). The A7SIII is performing great, I just need to step up my game now 😉 I think your image looks great btw, checked it out on my big screen and on my studio monitors (pair of BenQ SW320 which I calibrate weekly for my large scale printing). Now if only I drank beer, I could have all the free beer I wanted tonight. Just never liked the smell so I never tasted it (plus my dad drank enough growing up for the two of our lifetimes, so..)

Frame grab from today's interview. Just made basic adjustments to balance the RGB parade, nothing else. WB needs a little tweaking and I feel like I never add enough contrast... Shot at 4k24p roughly 50mm and f/4 or 5.6, can't remember which one as it was getting brighter and my ND only went to 5-stops, so I had to stop down to prevent hotspots on the boats in the BG. Chris

    Panasonic GH6

Because they want to keep the price low and target a large audience in need of quality webcam, remote video, streaming, live event. If you look at the specs with a GH6 replacement in mind it's confusing. But as a new product to cover Covid19 streaming demand, it could be a "smart" product. A GH5s sensor in a box to keep R&D low and that's it !!! Target is not C70 or Komodo users.
