  1. Nikon have lost the plot. Raw options appeal to about 7 people on planet Earth whereas internal 10 bit options to around 7 billion. Great that they wish to offer these things but they need to be competitive in the wider market to survive.

  2. I for one prefer a larger camera because the weight makes hand holding steadier but you want to know what I don't believe in? External recorders. For me it has nothing to do with weight or size, it has to do with one more thing that can go wrong, more wires to carry, more batteries to charge, and external recorders are a single point of failure if their hard drive gets corrupt. I agree with @MrSMW and @Phil A as a hybrid shooter every single extra piece of equipment becomes a PITA when on set as a hybrid solo shooter. For my use case I am almost always shooting solo, on a single shoot I could be dealing with light stands, studio strobes, remote flash triggers, photo camera body and diffusers; I could also be shooting video clips from a tripod or handheld, monopod, and sometimes gimbal.....mixed into all of that of course are lenses, expo discs, ND filters, and sometimes audio which includes lavs, XLR adapters, and transmitters / receivers or XLR wiring. Lets not forget continuous video lighting, smoke machines etc.. let's not forget the obligatory drone which is needed for a few big picture drone video clips, and if a timelapse is needed that's a 3rd camera body, and lets not forget underwater if its a lifestyle shoot that wants to showcase their pool or a modeling swimwear shoot so that's a 4th camera body....all as a one man shooter. So you ask what has happened over the last decade? What happened is customers expect more than ever before but at the same time they pay less than ever before. In my particular area the local market is saturated with photographers and videographers all under cutting each other bidding on the same clients; those same clients that half the time feel like cell phone footage is probably good enough anyway so why bother hiring us to begin with. So yes, I absolutely will gladly use the absolute smallest simplest configuration possible to get the job done. This is why I got the S5, this is why I have an EF adapter to minimize my lens kit, this is why I don't use anything external if I can help it including recorders or even monitors, and this is also why I don't care as much about RAW as I do about 4K 10 bit internally recorded. Yes BRAW 12:1 would be nice when its time to edit the footage but 10bit 4K recorded internally to dual cards is WAY more important to me as is a single lens mount that will work on everything from my C200 to my 5DIV to my S5. Specs are great to read about or watch on YouTube. but they are a tiny part of the big picture and the realities you face working in this industry every day. And I'm not talking about the big name commercial production industry, I'm talking about the in between industry where you are a shooter like me shooting weddings, music videos, small business promo videos, corporate events, real estate marketing videos, etc. There is a ton of paying work in this space that simply doesn't pay quite enough to bring in entire teams and assistants.

  3. I did it guys. I went back to the Sony F3! Finally found a descent deal on it. 2.1k for all this. Since I don't need the 4k I was between this, a canon c300, c100, Sony fs5 and fs700. The F3 with 444 has 850hrs and the pix e5 came with 960gbs of storage.

  5. But not everyone wants to massively increase the footprint and weight of his camera by adding an external recorder. For many people, the whole point of shooting with a hybrid camera is the size. I couldn't care less what's available via HDMI out, it needs to be in-camera or I'm not going to use it. I'm clearly not in the minority with that opinion. For 90%+ of users, the new Nikons will be 8bit cameras.

  6. Its great that another camera manufacturer have embraced BRAW; such a shame its Nikon, who have ham-fisted it with a paid upgrade and limited their internal recordings. Why not simply include this upgrade with the new release? I'm sure they delay these things a few months to justify charging extra for it. The S1 did much the same, though I suspect a last minute change of heart led Panasonic to instead offer it for free for a limited period. Maybe Nikon will do the same, but I won't hold my breath. I have a wish that Panasonic would allow a possible S1H successor to output BRAW. It would be a great addition and make it worth buying for me, even if the AF is a bit crap. 😄

  7. It will auto focus to closest point in the central area. You control the switch between AF and manual modes with a trigger on the controller. So you can be manually focused and then press the trigger and it will engage the AF. In AF-S mode it will then not re-adjust until you press the trigger again so you can just use it to get and initial lock and then manually adjust from there or you can switch to AF-C mode where it will constantly re-focus on whatever is in the central area. The QuadLock system lets you set four different focus points in the scene either manually or using AF-S and then switch between them with adjustable transition time. QuadLock also has an additional function where you set one of the previously stored points as a target and then manually focus and it will automatically stop when you reach the target focus position ensuring that you do not overshoot. It will work with those cameras with manual focus lenses but it will obviously not do any of the camera parameter control and motorless operations that the BM cameras can use. The core AFX module does not support eye or body AF. But the next add on module for it does.

  8. I purchased the S1 set, and I see what you mean about the colour deviation between the GHa and S1a Luts. I was quite happy with GHa on my S1 footage, but the S1 High Scale Lut looks more vibrant and cleaner to me compared to the GHa Linear conversion. Better colour separation and fidelity. Thanks for your hard work, this is a really valuable tool and a pleasure to use! Footage is 1080p 10 bit from the S1, basic corrections with the luts applied on top, ungraded. Top is S1a, bottom is GHa.

  9. AFX is the long overdue focus control expansion option for our PBC system for BM Pocket4K/6K cameras. With AFX and its included handheld remote you can control manual focus of MFT/EF lenses but also operate our newly created Single and Continuous AF modes for the camera. These new AF-S/C modes are made possible by the AFX’s integral ToF sensor which constantly measures object distance from the camera. As well as allowing you to control focus using the thumbstick and AF-S/C switching, the handheld remote also enables you to map any of the camera controls such as ISO/Aperture/WB etc to five of its hardware switches as well as being able to toggle Record Start/Stop from one of its two finger trigger buttons. All communication between the AFX, the handheld controller, the PBC and the camera are performed wirelessly and, as with the PBC, the AFX runs from its own internal battery or USB. The AFX will be priced at €199 (plus the cost of the PBC for new adopters) and pre-orders begin next month. Here are some basic examples of the AFX in manual focus, Single and Continuous AF modes. In AF-S mode, current focus is held until you press the trigger button so is equivalent to half shutter press/Back Focus Button on a regular (D)SLR or mirrorless. More to follow as the pre-order date approaches.

  11. No chance of renting here in rural SW France. Paris or other big city maybe but not here. My set up going forward really is 3 identical cameras, 5 lens options including 2 zooms and all working on a single day as hybrids: 35mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 45mm f2.8, 20-60mm and 70-300mm. Three of which don’t quite exist yet... Also have the drone (Mavic Air) a tiny bag of audio gear, 1 carbon tripod, 1 freestanding monopod, 1 lightweight light stand and 1 dimmable & directional LED and that is it. OK, a couple of spare batteries and a power bank plus some ND’s but that really is it. All fits in a single 30 litre backpack except the monopod which fits in my hand. It’s the minimum I need for providing photo & video at a wedding, event or for my documentary commercial work with the essence being I get out of the car and pick up 1x backpack, 1x monopod and still have 1x free hand to lock the car but not shake hands with people as we don’t do that any longer. But then I might want to go into the mountains and shoot a 96mp raw landscape and can also do that with the S5 and the lenses I have (or will have) for proper work. I have found that for stills it’s as accurate as anything out there...but not tested that at a wedding of course and no amount of testing or other work can really test gear like a wedding!

  13. I don't always limit my wishes to what is realistic to expect. This a casual discussion not a debate. Even so, what is realistic for features depends as much on manufacturers choices than what is possible with technology. BRAW internal may seem a foolish wish for any other camera than BM; until another manufacturer comes along and offers it. The P4K took a lot by surprise offering 4K RAW so cheaply. It would have seem unrealistic a request before then. Its not as if the technology isn't there to deliver on such expectations. Nikon will gives us BRAW external, whilst Canon provides Raw internal. If the R5 had a fan and been made by Panasonic that cripples its cameras less, doubtless its RAW video recording would be less impeded. Who knows what Panasonic will offer next, maybe with a GH6. The frustrating thing I find about Nikon, Canon and Panasonic is that they are all on the cusp of delivery something I would really value as a filming tool, but each lacks something that truly sets it apart from the competition.

Yeah I think the skintone is much better with the S1a lut. It's from a hike near Benidorm in Spain.

  15. I understand your point fully, but I think this a bit less true since BMRAW. When you look at the bitrate of Braw and from feedback of some friends who work with it and Davinci Resolve, it works very very well. At 12.1 which I saw some test footage is just slightly less sharp than other less compressed version, we are clearly less heavy than normal PRORES. We are closer to H264 compression rate!!!

  16. Rightly or wrongly, having Braw as external only means Blackmagic still get a cut of the sales because you need the Video Assist. If it was internal, they wouldn't get as much. The 3rd party would probably pay for the rights to the codec, but I'd imagine there's a bigger margin with the VA hardware sales. It also means people are less likely to go that route. If you don't want the put a monitor on your camera, or want Braw internal, you need to buy a BMD camera, so either way they're getting extra sales.

  17. So true. Screwing around with VNDs and lens hoods/clamp on matte boxes is a PITA. But unless you've got internal ND control, a VND is a must in a fast-moving doc style shooting situation. Just another reason why the C70 is an attractive option for a low-budget pro shooter, if you can swallow the Canon pill.

  18. Awesome. That’s a great deal. You made the best choice. This looks a lot like my old setup, same batteries powering the recorder and everything.

  19. EF-S lenses will not work on the S5. Even though the S5 has an APS-C mode for video it did not seem to make a difference, you could still see the lens barrel in the image I even tried PIXEL:PIXEL mode (no idea what that mode is but it sounded interesting) and I still couldn't use the EF-S lenses. I don't know about the Godox O line but I can tell you the Godox C line (Canon) works with the S5. I'm not sure about the TTL features since I never use TTL and only shoot manual flash but the Godox C multi flash triggers and the flashes themselves mounted to the hotshoe work just fine. I'm waiting for Lightroom and Photoshop RAW support for the S5 to start testing the photography features. I don't feel like hacking the metadata just to process the RAW images.

  23. Yes it does. So if you have the Nano wheel you can also use it to set focus points for the QuadLock system etc. You can use one of these clamps like this and then that gives you the 1/4 20 thread so the ability to mount it on an arm etc etc A two pack of them with ball head adapters are £17 on Amazon and will give you a lot of flexibility and are just generally useful bits of kit. https://www.amazon.co.uk/2Pack-ChromLives-Camera-Clamp-Monitor/dp/B07GZ1D4BB

  24. The timing! I’m in the middle of making my own similar device, with a raspberry pi zero, only mine will offer both LIDAR-based AF for my Pocket4K as well as SteadXP-type stabilization using a gyroscope and accelerometer. Mine is for me though, no plans to sell, so we can skip the cease and desist letters. I am also working on an iOS app for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max that will do the same things, use the phone’s LIDAR to control BMPCC’s af as well as record movement with gyro and accelerometer for stabilization. That one will be available soon.
