  1. Have smartphones overtaken the best medium format cameras for dynamic range? This is a comparison that should worry everybody in the camera industry. Full blog post: https://www.eoshd.com/news/fuji-gfx-100-loses-to-huawei-p40-pro-plus-smartphone-for-dynamic-range/

  2. And, from what I understand is that this guy wants to start in Wedding videos and move to doc and commercial work. Blowing it all on just a body.... doesn’t make sense. Equipment cost < Business Profit Look at high end equipment later. Start getting customers first... start charging a rate that covers your hours put into it + equipment rental rate (estimate). If you get enough customers then invest in equipment.

  3. I have a module request for down the road consideration: a wireless distance readout/display. Countless ACs/DOPs use the Tilta gear on mid-grade shoots, but despise their generic “0-100” readout at the controller. While it would require some pre-production profile calibration work, many would pick up the AFX for this feature alone: real foot/meter readings at the hand wheel. I know this can be read at the AFX, but often focus is wireless for the simple reason that it is being pulled from a distance.

  4. Man, I just don't see it. I love the specs, but a lot of this footage just reminds me of cheap DSLR footage with a poor attempt at a "film look." The C300ii or older canon footage, (pre DGO sensor,) looks dynamic and beautiful with very accurate and balanced color. I do believe that you can a get a more neutral / classic look with this camera, but curious why a lot of the videos have a similar look. Maybe trying to grade a C-LOG2 file from scratch? I've heard multiple people mention they love the IQ and the reviewer above is raving about it. The specs and size are great, and the images have a low noise floor, but do these images really knock people off their feet? All the praise over these images makes it sounds like we're all talking about the Komodo or something. https://vimeo.com/472141764 / More C70 https://youtu.be/ohTfU1trOIo / Random C300 Mk2 video

  5. I played a while also with the Samsung S9Plus... with the latest firmware it is absolutely amazing (I guess it is about the 1.5 fixed aperture)

  6. Taking it even further... A: one body + one lens to practice with until you get close to your first job and then...and only then... B: buy another identical body (so there is no learning curve) and a second lens so you can do the work. Then there is the rest of it; audio, lighting, tripod, mono, gimbal if that’s your thing, etc. But right now, not wishing to discourage anyone, it’s not the best time to be trying to start out in this industry for sure.

  7. At this current pandemic it's kinda dumb to invest huge money for wedding business

  8. The camera automatically switches to APSC mode when using S35 glass at least if the glass is modern with electronics. Honestly S35 mode looks great though.

  9. Indeed. Blowing 10k on just a body for weddings is overkill. By a massive amount. 10k for all bodies and lenses max, but it can easily be done for under 5k. I’m in the process of new kit from scratch and total budget for video is under 5k and I shoot an average 25-30 of the things per annum with 25 already booked in for 2020. Especially with the uncertainty in the world right now of the entire industry, blowing 10k on a body with I presume no bookings, is nuts. Apologies OP if your scenario is anything different to that, but it’s how I read it. More like it!

  10. He has a direct to 709 conversion as well as Log-C. Ive personally used lut Calc and GHalex. They definitely produce different results. He also has a specific version for Premiere as well as under and overexposure LUTs. I highly recommend.

  11. I'm honestly stunned but what they're including. I really wanted the AF improvements (more for stills than anything else) and hope we might get 4k60/10bit but I never expected this. Even after all of the new camera announcements I'd still choose an S1.

  12. Btw the autofocus is surprisingly a bit faster with the 18-135 compared to my tamron 24-70 g2, even though on a native ef camera the 18-135 is a lot slower then the tamron. Also apsc is limited 12mp, so the resolution you get out of your photos won't be great, same for 4k video, where it is only a one to one readout, so the noise and resolution isn't gonna be the best.

  13. SLR Magic produce a 2x anamorphic adapter, the SLR-A502X, and I would suspect that might work with a slightly wider taking lens than your Cinelux. They are fairly expensive new, but do come up on eBay every now and then. There used to be a few videos on Vimeo and YouTube shot with the SLR-A502X. It's not the last word in sharpness, but has bags of character.

  14. I did the same thing, I got the Sigma adapter and can now use all of my EF mount FF lenses with no problem on the S5 and out of all of my lenses including APS-C lenses only the EF-S 10-22mm does not work. The focus peaking kind of sucks, very hard to see and for me a lot of the time its just not visible at all and combine that with the fact you can't zoom in to check focus while recording and the focusing situation when using EF lenses in general isn't that great; I am sure the native lens experience is better. As long as you aren't filming with a razor thin depth of field and not filming anything fast paced its workable but definitely not great.

  15. New firmware announced by Panasonic for the S1 (as well as some for S1R and S1H) coming November 24th. The good news is that the new AF system (implemented in the S5) is coming November 24th. Red recording status frame indicator (Yeah!!!). They also announced that firmware is coming in the first half of 2021 for the S1 which will allow for 5.9K RAW over hdmi, and 5.9K / C4k internal recording. Finally 4K 60p internal will be 10-bit 4:2:0 instead of current 8-bit 4:2:0 All the same, I am thinking of either "downgrading" to an S5 or instead going for... ...an R6.

  16. You honestly can't go wrong with any system. Panasonic's full frame line up which is now supporting 12 bit RAW out is really compelling. Full Frame 422 and 12 bit RAW at a $2k price point. Canon though pricey has a wide range of very reliable and ergonomic choices with some of the best color science and auto focus. RED has entered into the affordable market with the Komodo which gives you global shutter and 16 bit linear RAW. Sony is maybe a bit behind but the A7S3 is pretty compelling with high quality 4k up to 120fps in a small body all in full frame with no crop and 10 bit 422 also 12 bit prores RAW out. Z-cam is offering very ergonomic and affordable bodies ranging anywhere from M43 to Full frame with internal Prores, RAW, and Prores RAW out. Interchangeable mounts and easy to manage power solutions make it a very good option. Blackmagic though less ergonomic in general offers affordable cameras with one of the best internal codecs out there, BRAW. 12 bit compressed RAW that edits better then almost anything else. Can you really go wrong these days?

  17. Damn my Panasonic S1 is getting a huge upgrade next year. Prores RAW out....... Feeling good about picking one up for $1300.

  18. C70 is the best bet at the moment for your budget. Weddings and docs should prioritize usability over all else. You miss the shot, you're fired! You just need to choose what's practical for a dynamic shooting environment. The c70 is unique in that price range for internal NDs, superior dynamic range, clean low light, great color, all leading to minimal post work, which also allows for fast turnaround. Of course the on-board audio features, AF, lightweight, etc. all contribute to what helps a solo shooter or skeleton crew. You certainly can make it work with other cameras, but they won't be easier. But for commercial work, generally speaking, camera systems are far less important than the production elements (location, lighting, crew, etc.). And you'll probably rent anyways, because if the producer or client wants a specific camera, it won't be the one in your price range.

  19. Id rent first before splashing 10k on equipment! Try both systems out for week or two and then make move!

  20. I’m not sure which did it, but I did calibration as well as firmware update, and the noise has disappeared. I’m pretty impressed so far, especially for photos, I never would have imagined using the pocket for photography, other than maybe panos. Look at the crop of this 64MP photo, blown out sky, yes I know, but the detail is pretty great-

  21. I watched this video just for the comedy factor. Just watching the video started giving me a headache. The Panasonic S5 is such a joy to shoot with compared to the R6. It's like Canon is selling a sports car but puts a limiter on it, rations the amount of horsepower it can put to the wheels at random times, then expects you to thank them those few times you can actually drive it like their marketing material said it could be driven.

  22. and this was produced mid 50's for 8mm film!! No computers! No automated lathes! Pure Maths and Master craftsmanship! Big LOL at more recent so called anamorphic bogies!

  23. Not to self promote but I think this is an underrated video on the quality standpoint. For whatever reason it didn't get many views for us. The Inspire 2/Zenmuse X7 with the 50mm lens combo is just...crazy. The parralax creates a look that's closing in on full size helicopter stuff. This was for a company to see how Inspire 2 footage upscales to 8K using AI for both resolution and framerates.
