Here is the way I see it: All DSLR mounts: headed the way of the dodo. Buy this if you see some amazing secondhand bargains, but be very careful not to do anything that leaves you "locked into" the mount. (such as buying electronic EF mount lenses! No, no, no) MFT Mount: the widest range of options, with the widest range of brand/manufacturer support. Some people look down at 4/3" sensors as being "too small", when in reality they're only marginally smaller than the classic standard of Super 35mm that has ruled Oscars / Golden Globe / Emmy Awards etc for many years. Sony E Mount: 2nd best behind MFT Mount when it comes to wide ranging choices to pick from, and E Mount is especially strong when it comes to having many choices of camera bodies on both the stills side (the a7 & a6xxx series) and the cinema side (VENICE/FX9/FS7/FS5/etc) of things too. There is a reasonable fear that Sony is "turning into the next Canon" (in a bad way). That Sony might be resting on their laurels and not pushing ahead with innovation like they used to do when they were the new kid on the block and hungry for success. Canon EOS-M: the writing is on the wall, they're going the way of the dodo too. Canon will eventually ditch EOS-M and focus exclusively on their RF Mount. Pentax Q / Nikon 1: huh, what? Fujifilm X / Nikon Z: great stills cameras that have taken great leaps forward in recent years with their video capabilities, but nothing higher end if you wish to upgrade later on to a cinema body instead of just using a stills/hybrid camera. Canon RF: what to get if you're a Canon fanboy with stockholm syndrome, instead of using your switch to mirrorless as an opportunity to free yourself from your Canon chains of bondage! (however, like any other ruling tyrant, Canon does hang out a carrot in front of you as a faint glimmer of hope that "the future will be different, and all your patience through the abuse will be worth it in the end". As the Canon C70 in particular is an impressive new release, will the C70 live up to its hype? Does the release of the C70 mark a future change for new camera releases from Canon? Or will Canon quickly back slide into their bad old ways?)2 points

Does that video have sound? Thanks, Kyle. I'm definitely taking it as a signal to crank up my editing speed. I'm about to take on a project to edit about 19 ~4 minute videos shot by amateurs and and another editing a ~45 minute news broadcast-style video where I might be the one to shoot presenters in a studio-type environment and stich it together with clips shot years ago by amateurs. To meet deadlines for both jobs and to make a decent return on my time I'll need to edit very quick and efficiently. I think it will warrant a small investment in equipment and time to boost my editing speed. The small BM keypad looks nice, but I'm not sure if you could program it for Premiere or other programs. I'm starting to think that the Elgato Stresmdeck XL can be programed to do all of the same functions and more, plus be usable for many more programs and might even work with my ATEM to run macros for livestreaming. The trackball I just got has a jog wheel, so I can even have that functionality if I edit two-handed once I can again. I'm not sure why I'd want to edit one handed and use my right hand for something else... to pull a Jeffrey Toobin? Seriously though, research shows that splitting focus on two tasks lowers productivity. And I'm really not sure what I'd use the other hand for. I've thought about loupedeck. It seems that it's primary benefit is for color grading. I'm not 100 sure it will save lots of time. I guess you can program a lot of its buttons as hotkeys, but the Elgato interface is better in that regard. Thanks, Kisaha. The trackball my wife bought for me to try out is a Kensington with a jog wheel. It makes a significant difference and now I wonder why I haven't had one all along. So far, it looks like the Elgato Stream Deck XL is going to give me the best bang for my buck. If I was a colorist primarily or if I had tons of photos to edit I'd probably pick up a Loupedeck. I'm still on the fence about it.1 point

I think the C300iii RAW looks really nice. The C300iii is really the camera I want. It's well out of my price range, but maybe I should just pull out all the stops and aim for it. KnightsFan reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Not really, it is $349 vs $199 for the Zoom F2-BT, which needs the Ultrasync BLUE, thus for a single bodypack recorder setup with TC you're looking at an identical price either which way. (actually, the Zoom will be *more* expensive than Tentacles if you're not already part of the TCS Ltd ecosystem, as you'll have to get a USO too. And that is ignoring other little details, like the Zoom you still need to buy batteries and a Micro SD card for, but you don't need to for the Tentacle)1 point -
Best system to invest in for videography?
John Matthews reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Indeed. Agreed 110% For someone starting out with their first camera, even a used GH5 is overkill. A secondhand Panasonic G7 or G85 would be plenty fine as well! Indeed. Agreed 110% Yes, the learning curve last a looong time (I'd say it lasts your whole life time!). By the time you get to point you can land those "big jobs" on a consistent basis, your Sony FX9 / Canon C70 / whatever is now "outdated". Wouldn't even get an identical body. You can go cheaper! If I was recommending to someone to start out with the aim to film weddings, I'd suggest the Panasonic G85 / G7 combo. Yes, all of that will add up to a total cost which is far far far higher than the price of a couple of camera bodies! Indeed. Agreed 110%1 point -

Why do you need to get two quite different cameras?? Doesn't sound like it is worth it for the type of work you're doing? Get yourself say a Panasonic GH5, and keep your GX85 as a back up / B Cam.1 point -

Going to be interesting to read head to head reviews of the Zoom F2-BT vs Tentacle Track E (as neither are available to buy right now, just in pre-order, so no unbiased head to head reviews are yet out) Definitely either will be a big step up from the Tascam DR10L/DR10CS (or even worse, the Zoom H1 / lav combo! gasp), and massively cheaper than a Lectrosonics PDR/SPDR/MTCR or Zaxcom ZFR100/ZFR200/ZFR300/ZFR400.1 point -

I'm still looking into this, and started a thread some time ago: My little keypad thingy arrived but I haven't had a chance to look at it. My initial impressions are that the only difference between dedicated editing controllers and normal keyboards is that 1) dedicated controllers have a jog wheel for accurately scrubbing forwards and backwards, and 2) dedicated controllers often have a specific layout and colour-coding or labelling of the keys. Beyond those things they're pretty much just keyboards: Zooming back out a little, sorry to hear about your injury, but great to hear you're trying to work around it and potentially take it as an opportunity to improve your setup. I would go one step further and suggest that this is an opportunity to get an edit controller, learn to use it with your left hand, and that maybe you should think of this as a permanent way forwards. You'll be building muscle memory, and (assuming you're right-handed), when your hand heals you will have your dominant hand free to do other things while you're editing. In contrast to that I use my dominant hand for editing control and my non-dominant hand is pretty useless as I'm not as coordinated with it and I don't have any muscle memory for it either.1 point

Sony all the way if it wasn't for the damn noise reduction. I'd probably still buy Sony over Canon as I am not going to deal with record limits or artificial overheating limits. Detail is an issue though. If you really want to punch in a lot the R5 will be way better. Again though its the damn cripple hammer. How about the Panasonic S1/S5/S1H/S1R instead1 point

I wouldn't pay anything he says much (serious) attention. Here are some frame grabs from my first feature length film Bad Decisions. I started on the GH4, then shot some scenes on the GH5. I will finish this next year with the S5 and S1H if COVID-19 doesn't turn into COVID-20. ๐ฌ I'm probably going to go straight to Amazon Prime. My budget thus far has been $10K and I have another $3K or so for the last two scenes. As so many of you know, no ifs, ands or buts about it; filmmaking is fucking hard! This is probably why this is my last one. I've been discouraged so many times that I had pretty much decided to delete the whole film and just quit altogether. But looking at these grabs, and knowing that I lit that, I blocked that, I wrote that, I shot that and I directed that gives me the courage to complete what I've started. It would be nice if I break even, but even if I don't, I can say that "Hey, I did that!" And boy I didn't do that alone! I had so much help from friends, family and complete strangers that it's too much to even count! They were angels, there just when I needed them, and for not a moment longer, There was one scene, that I was shooting straight guerrilla style. I needed to shoot on three city blocks at night, and I had to light it, and there was a gun scene that kinda made me nervous for the safety of the cast and crew. We have no permit process in my city, so I went to the police department, and explained what I was doing that night, and they were like "Ok". As soon as it got dark around cast and crew call time was at 6pm. We went to the neighbors houses and let them know what we were doing. We started blocking, and laying down markers for lights tripods and actors. It got dark at 9pm, and we started shooting. We were shooting in moving cars, had special effects, and every scene was lit. We even faked a window getting shot out. We wrapped that scene at 5am the next day, right before the sun came up. Do you know for the entire time we were shooting, not a single car drove up any block visible? It's like we rented 100 homes, paid everyone to stay inside and blocked off the area for a 1/4 mile radius! God was most definitely on my side that day, and it was one of the best scenes in the entire film!1 point

And, from what I understand is that this guy wants to start in Wedding videos and move to doc and commercial work. Blowing it all on just a body.... doesnโt make sense. Equipment cost < Business Profit Look at high end equipment later. Start getting customers first... start charging a rate that covers your hours put into it + equipment rental rate (estimate). If you get enough customers then invest in equipment.1 point

This is one of my biggest mistakes of the production to be completely honest. I shot most of the scenes with Canon FD 28mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4 and 35-105 f/3.5. Beautiful glass, but you need to stop down a stop or two to get it really sharp. I lit all the scenes with LED Fresnel lights and panel lights, but sometimes that wasn't enough unless the lenses were wide open, so some shots are way too soft for my liking, like the black guy with the white guy in the car scene. I was away from power, so couldn't use my A.C. powered lights. ๐ฅ When I rented the GH5 for some scenes, I also rented the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and Speedbooster. This is the lens that is shooting the scene with the guy and girl in the bar (shout out to my fine ass wife ๐). In other scenes, I even used the Panasonic 42.5mm, 25mm and 20mm f/1.7 primes. That was just stupid of me. I even used the 14-45mm 3.5-5.6 in a scene because I needed a much wider shot indoors. The guy looking out the window at night was shot with this. The one other thing I wish I had was an electronic gimbal. I had a vest with spring arm and mechanical stabilizer, but I really wasn't good at it at all. It would have been better for me to go into more debt to add better motion shots, as many were killed and just shot on sticks. I went with the GH4 and GH5 because it was the camera I had. I made certain to always shoot out to a Ninja 2 and at the time I was using DNxHD as a codec. All in all, I'm very pleased with the quality. You may be surprised, but low light shooting wasn't really an issue! Every single scene was lit, so I didn't go over ISO-1600 for any shot. This is why I really can't understand cameras like the A7S line (even though I eventually bought the GH5S myself) when it comes to filmmaking. For docu work, yeah, that's a perfect camera, for weddings it makes life super easy. But when you are trying to sculpt a look with light placement, when shooting a film in available light, you relinquish all control of the visual medium. Now you could use negative fills to great effect (never seen it done once on an indie set) or fly large diffusion panels and scrims, but what indie production can afford to do that? The biggest problem for this project is, well, life. Everyone in the film has jobs, businesses and careers. Getting the moons to align was quite the difficult task. Many a time it was a shoot day, and someone had to be at work early the next morning and couldn't make it. At that point, I just needed bodies for grip just to not loose another day. I even hired my handyman that does home repairs for me to do grip work! Almost all shooting was done exclusively at night by design, but that worked out in my favor. The budget went to craft services, location rentals and gear. I also paid a talent agency to wrangle extras for me for two scenes. At least these people had an interest in the business, as you really can't have just any Joe or Jane do this because more often than not, they will fuck up your shot by looking into your camera or talking when they aren't supposed to, etc. I hope this helps!1 point

Recently most of the forum topics have been about new FF cameras for $3-5 thousand, but I bet 90% of views on this forum are from people looking to spend $1000 or less. Even in the USA the average family savings account is only about the price of a new car, and for age under 35 the average is $10,000. If you do mostly hand held shooting and don't care about 4k60p, the X-S10 is the obvious choice for the IBIS. I compared the After Effects stabilizer (same as Premier?) doing walking/running torture tests, and the Final Cut Pro InertiaCam stabilizer was much better. I haven't tried Resolve.1 point

I don't know about the aviation rules in Australia, but I wouldn't say don't use it around town. I know I could do that because I am often hired for jobs in San Francisco where, as you probably know, it is kind of a big town. Here in the US, I sometimes get alerts when flying close to a closed down private airport. I mean, there are those large shipping containers on the runway, and the DJI app still notes it as an airport. Ugghhh...0 points
