DIY Perks Fixed the Canon R5! (almost)
The Dancing Babamef and 4 others reacted to Matt Perks for a topic
I am indeed! I meant to thank bloggers (including Andrew specifically) for bringing the issue of overheating up so much. The pressure about the timer nonsense forced Canon to change the way the camera monitors temperatures, which is the reason the mod works at all.5 points -
C70 - first impressions
andrgl and one other reacted to Gregormannschaft for a topic
Been using the C70 the past few days and have to admit I wasn’t the biggest fan at first. It felt a little unwieldy to use, I’d have loved to have been able to swivel the handle a little as the joystick is in a tricky spot to reach sometimes. The dials are also a little oddly placed. Second day filming and it feels a lot more natural after I started to think of it more as a small cinema camera rather than a big mirrorless or DSLR. As always, love the internal NDs, like having false color and so many customizable buttons. The DPAF seemed snappier than the C200 but still not perfect and not something I would fully trust for some shots. Footage seems clean, not overly sharp but I haven’t really had time to play around with it properly yet. I’m still not entirely sure the price is justified, it seems a little high in Europe especially, but once it drops a little with cameras appearing on the used market I think it will be a lot more attractive. The BMPCC4K, and even the LUMIX S1, have really screwed with how I perceive what a camera is worth these days. There’s so much value to be had at lower price points, it’s really becoming more about convenience features and ergonomics.2 points -
Panasonic 85mm f1.8 has turned up. First impressions, it's light, compact and well built. Second impression is that the AF seems marginally better than the kit lens that was 'OK' and much (MUCH) better than the Sigma 56mm f1.4 In fact, I am cancelling my order for the Sigma 16mm and 30mm f1.4's and probably returning the 56mm f1.4 I'm going to do some more thorough tests tomorrow but it seems that it's true that the L Mount Alliance may share a lens mount, but they don't all share their protocols as much as they might. I don't need ultra-amazing AF, but there are times when I need it to work and it 'seems' at least, that Panasonic glass with Panasonic bodies is the way to go. So back to my original plan and will await the announcement of the Panasonic 24, 35 and 50mm f1.8's and work with that set instead. Maybe even 1 less body as I am actually quite impressed with the IBIS and it's only a total of less than 10 minutes I actually need a monopod for dual photo/video at the same time and that will save me the cost of one full body. But the new 85 is looking good. But then I thought the Sigma 56 was...but I have done a little more testing before opening my gob this time 😉2 points

They're fantastic. AF works great. Image quality is great. The 23 even has a slight rainbow flare at f1.4 which is a nice characteristic. My only grip is that they don't look great and the aperture ring isn't clicked, so I end up moving it a lot by mistake, although that's less likely to happen now that I can control the aperture with the front dial.1 point -

Panasonic AF motor scans with 480 hz the scenes and gives the DFD system faster information for contrast AF. Sigma don´t have this technology.. But sometimes DFD truly sucks ( no reaction in AF-C, only AF-S works fine )1 point -
A7SIII Long GOP vs All-I - any feedback or differences?
Juank reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
With h265 I use 10-bit 4:2:0 and it edits really smooth. 4:2:2 chokes things up, but 4:2:0 has no issues. Eventually I’m going to test the all-I vs gop vs prores on the ninja. Just haven’t had the time and I’m really happy with how everything looks right now. For quick turnaround stuff the 4:2:0 is the perfect balance of IQ and file size. Prograde has a discount code BFCM20 for Black Friday. chris1 point -
So I’ve bought the Z CAM-S6, hoping it would be useful for some upcoming projects. However, I planned to sell it after finishing those projects, unless I find myself in love with this camera. Anyway, I took the camera with some friends and shot a little video. We didn’t plan beforehand because this was meant to be more of a feeling out process and a camera test. I’ve tried very hard to make it a more coherent story, though I must admit it is still very confusing. 1. Modular design is fantastic because you can build it up the way you wanted, however the cost adds up very quickly. 2. Very well built, but the metal body makes it a little bit heavy, despite the size. 3. A lot of codec and resolution options. It’s always nice to have internal ProRes recording and H265 is very efficient indeed. 4. Image Quality is detailed and organic, and you can always shoot in 6K. 5. Battery life is quite good, especially if you use a bigger battery. 6. Control needs time to get used to, and it’s still slower than a proper video camera like the C200 and FS5. 7. CFast 2.0 Card is VERY EXPENSIVE. This forces me to use H265, which sometimes requires transcoding. 8. AF is just as bad as, if not worse than, EVA1. Normally, this won’t be an issue but… 9. The HDMI Output is very soft, for some reason. Maybe this is due to user error. The image is so soft that even using a 6 inch monitor, it is still hard to judge focus sometimes. This is my biggest problem by far. 10. Playback is in LOW resolution. Clients may not like feel confident about the footage you just captured. The whole video is shot in 6K 2.4:1 mode, 23.976 FPS ,with Z-Log2 and in H265. All is shot handheld. I’ve mainly used the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and for one shot the Canon 85 1.4. Thank you. PS. I'm not sure should I make a topic like this. I apologize first if it violates the rules.1 point

I started using 17 beta 2 today. So far I am impressed. HEVC playback is improved (the last few versions of 16 seemed to get worse, but it's back to being great), overall UI responsiveness is noticeably better, and the new color tool is pretty cool. I haven't had any crashes yet, but I also haven't done anything other than edit and color. I'm really excited for the direction this software is going!1 point -
A7S III vs S5 AF with EF lenses
Juank reacted to Mark Romero 2 for a topic
Well... did you try instead to focus on the BACKGROUND??? Maybe that way it would lock focus on you by mistake ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1 point -
I think it’s going to potentially get interesting when the full lineup of f1.8’s are available; the 24, 35, 50 and 85, the latter of which is now shipping. Hopefully by the weekend for me and then I will know more. A few have reported MUCH improved AF after the firmware upgrade, but they may be smoking something... I really need to experience it to believe it as I’m pretty sure it’s marginal at best.1 point

A7S III vs S5 AF with EF lenses
Juank reacted to Mark Romero 2 for a topic
Canon EF lenses on an MC-21 Adapter on Panasonic S-series cameras only provide AF-S. There is NO AF-C available using EF lenses on the MC-21, neither when shooting video nor when shooting stills. Maybe if / when metabones comes out with an EF-L mount adapter there will be AF-C available on Panasonic S-series cameras. I only have one EF lens and that is the 16-35 f/4 and it seems to work fine when using AF-S (haven't tried it with the new Ver 1.6 firmware though). Even when shooting video in V-LOG at 24fps (where the Panasonic S1 struggles the most) the AF-S is fine. However, I normally shoot large, stationary objects, since I shoot real estate / architecture / travel. Houses and mountains don't move too quickly 🙂 As a side note, most Canon and Sigma EF-S glass will automatically set the camera to crop mode, and you can't change back to FF mode. I don't have any EF-S glass but I heard that some lenses might not, such as the Tamron 12-24 will let you shoot in FF mode. Apparently at around 16mm that Tamron 12-24mm lens will cover the full area of the FF sensor. Hearsay: I've read on other forums from people who own both an a7 III and an S1-series of cameras that EF glass performs a lot better on their Sony cameras than on their panasonic cameras. I've actually heard people say that their EF glass performs better on their Sony a7 III than on their Canon 5D III. Again, just hearsay, so don't quote me on this. Bottom line: as @MrSMW noted above, If AF is really important to you using Canon EF lenses, then go with the Sony. Just one last bit of food for thought though... While I realize and can see your reasoning for not wanting to buy L Mount glass, the Panasonic lenses are truly capable video lenses. Each lens varies, but most of them offer minimal focus breathing, are parfocal, have the ability to set the focus ring to linear, and allow you to customize the focus throw from about 90-degrees to around 270-degrees (as best as I can remember). They also have beautiful rendering, minimal flare, minimal ghosting, minimal CA, minimal LOCA. They were designed for hybrid shooters, while I think most Canon EF glass was designed for photographers.1 point -
Nope, but as above, for photography AF, I doubt there would be much in it though the S5 is probably a little slower, but as accurate as CDAF tends to work that way. My own experience of the S5 is just that, it's not lightning fast, but it is accurate. Sports or any fast moving subjects is not really any CDAF lenses forte. Video AF is another matter and the Sony will slay the Panasonic, roast it and eat it for lunch. Every time. I'm running tests right now between the 2 lenses I have and that is the Pan kit lens and it's 'OK' and the Sigma 56mm f1.4 and that one is so far terrible. In fact, using myself as a subject (as no one else is home), 5 times out of 5 attempts, it remains locked on the background and will not pick me up in any mode or at any distance. Not once. Switching to the Pan kit lens in the same lighting and the same settings, it will, but not instantaneously. I had more success yesterday (with the Sigma) when I could lock on the subject before pressing the record button, but it still wasn't great. Summary so far is that with native it's OK, with anything else, even from within the L Mount Alliance, it's iffy and I imagine with an adaptor and a Canon lens, ha ha ha ha good luck with that. I have the Pan 85mm f1.8 arriving shortly so looking forward to seeing if that is a bit more tuned for video AF... New firmware may make a difference. I am downloading that one as I type. They do sometimes sneak something in there rather than admit there is any kind of issue and there is supposed to be something in that regard for shooting log, but we'll see...1 point

Hi @Kisaha, sorry for delayed visiting to forum... No, I'm from Serbia, but as you might know, Serbia&Montenegro are actually the exact same people historically/politically being together or divided (as now) to two countries. (Being passionate and trained swimmer at summer and winter without difference) I spend there as much time as I can. If you don't mean actual covid-circumstances, apart of it - it is of course absolutely safe country, especially beautiful at here filmed part of its coast (places of Boka bay) famous as very unique and one the most beautiful and deepest bay in the world. About movie - I've made preparation and started with few shots of one indie-movie last autumn in Russia, but Corona stopped plan of devoted whole spring/summer 2020 to it. So I gathered little crew during late summer - so, 2-3 months ago - in Montenegro and also started with several shots with them, with idea to proceed this winter/spring. Several of chosen locations are here briefly presented. Actually, whole idea for movie in Russia also started with meetings in Montenegro coast. (And just for the case of little bit of clearing of my background and circumstances - actually and basically I'm writer/novelist with some of 15-20 novels published as Collected works and also with several written Ph. D. dissertation in Philosophy, Psychology and History of Arts topics, all parts of mine education... and struggling to earn money during lifetime always as freelancer. But started from several years ago I'm more and more devoted also to building personal narrative film making area, and because of my background I supposed easier to managed other people to participate in some enjoyable projects. So, in that line, it turned out that at the moment some pretty profiled and educated people - musical and dance artists, painters etc - from Russia are the most open minded and willing to reunite resources and skills to make something new and, I hope, aesthetically pleasing experience.)1 point

Nikon could leave camera market
Joacim Schwartz reacted to Danyyyel for a topic
WOW at lease one poster who has some insight. Panasonic and Fuji are at 4-5% of the market, 4 to 5x lower than Nikon and Nikon is neck in neck with Sony. Guess what its Nikon that is going to die. Then they tell you, but Canon Sony Panasonic form part of bigger companies.............. While Nikon forms part of the Mitsubishi Kieretsu, the biggest, bigger than Sony, Panasonic, Canon etc group in Japan, with one of its investors being the biggest bank in Japan. Nikon has been positive until last year and was sitting on more than 2 billions in cash in 2017 at least. They even have been bullish about their 2021-2022 numbers predicting profits for their imaging division as this big loss is a one time write off so as to make the cmpany leaner as they want to adapt to an ever declining market. They also have invested a lot into new field like lidar technology. The fumy thing is people using market share as a metric of progress. Tell that to Sony who where selling 5x more cameras in 2010 with 5-8% market share than today with about 20%. How much time do people think Sony corp will be happy as a non historic camera manufacturer to continue to invest and surely incur loss in a camera business. Is Nikon in great shape, definitely not, but they are in much better shape than other manufacturers like Panasonic, fuji and even Sony. One has only 5% at best, the other one is now stagnating at about 20% since Nikon and Canon have launched their Mirrorless lineup. Even more, because it is in an ever smaller market. Olympus the perfect example of the non sense about Nikon death. While for the last 3-5 years we are hearing how Nikon will die soon, Olympus who no one predicted, just went out. Nikon has always been positive until last year. Their profitability or even loss started in the imaging division started last year but with massive investment in R&D. What people here don't know as they concentrate on only camera bodies. Nikon has released 18 outstanding lens during the last 2 years. They have another 6 until next year, that will be 24 lens in 3 years. This is an investment on the next decade to 15 years, those lens are so good with the advantage of the bigger new mount. They also have build 6 bodies during that time and are heavily predicted that at least 1 if not 2 pro bodies next year. Meanwhile what has the likes of Sony produce. My simple guess, is that we will see Panasonic, then Sony and then the likes of Fuji, and I would put Nikon just before Canon to quit the camera industry. The likes of Canon, Nikon and to a certain extent Fuji are historic camera manufacturers. Sony was just opportunistic on a booming market, now that it is going down and down, they will soon quite, by selling it to stop the loss.1 point -
Panasonic S5 User Experience

I tried one single outdoor tracking sequence from around 50 feet away (face tracking mode) and it locked on body immediately, went to face as the subject got nearer and then eye at about 10 feet. Pre new firmware, if that is going to make any difference... Locks and tracks nicely indoors. I will give it a proper run this afternoon with one of my unwilling subjects but it’s looking good. Will I use it for stills? No, but only because I moved from Fuji to the L Mount system for a reason and that is so I could continue to shoot S35 video and full frame stills in one system. Will I shoot any APSC stills at all? Yes actually, but not with any of the Sigma APSC lenses and I will be getting all 3 as part of a single camera/3 lens dedicated video set up. I made a final decision on my stills lenses late last night after wrestling over every possible combination and came to the following conclusion and that is neither the f2.8’s or the big/heavy f1.4’s (such as the Sigma 105) are going to work for me. Instead, I am going to weld a Sigma 35mm f1.4 to one body and the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 to another, but when I need to (ceremonies and speeches) flick to crop mode to get a ‘130mm’ in camera crop. I need small and light and fast and portable as possible and for my needs, I have cracked it now. Final line up: Static video = S5 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 + tripod + power bank. This unit for ceremony & speeches only otherwise 20-60mm kit lens goes on and unit lives in my belt as my wide angle stills lens. Filming = S5 + Sigma 16mm f1.4 (dancing), Sigma 56mm f1.4 (indoor) and Pan 85mm f1.8 (outdoor) giving me 4K 50p focal lengths equivalent to: 24, 84 and 127.5mm. This unit lives on the freestanding monopod. Stills = pair of S5’s mated to the Sigma 35mm f1.4 and Sigma 85mm f1.4 which can be extended in crop mode to 127.5mm. I also have the super-wide 20mm focal width of the first unit all day except ceremony & speeches when I don’t need it anyway. 4 bodies + 7 lenses and it’s all still one backpack and one small camera bag with the monopod in hand, including my tiny folding carbon tripod, light stand, lighting, audio and drone. Phew. A lot harder than I thought but I remain convinced there is no better system for my needs right now than the combination of L Mount Sigma glass with S5 bodies.1 point -
Alex with emotive color. He has a thread on here about his lut for the GH5. https://www.emotivecolor.com/ Been a game changer for me in terms of color. So much nicer than the stock Panasonic 709. I've been limiting my camera choices to the ones he has luts for LOL. Aside from actually getting an Arri. Only one I could afford atm would be the Classic and its just too heavy and cumbersome for what I am used to. He does have a lut package for the A7s3, although the FX6 color is slightly different.1 point

Ok, now I am truly impressed....you can finally change the timeline resolution after adding clips to the timeline. I know every other NLE could do this years ago, but it was one of my pet peeves with Resolve and they finally fixed it. Also, for some reason it stopped crashing for me, I am now editing entire projects with version 17 Beta and it is back to being rock solid. I haven't had time yet to watch their presentation to see all of the new features, but the ones I've found so far are great.1 point -
Nikon Z6ii and Z7ii are to shoot 4k blackmagic Raw 60 fps
Joacim Schwartz reacted to stephen for a topic
Every camera has pros and cons. BRaw external for Nikon Z6, Z6 II is great. Problem for me is not the external recorder. BMPCC 4K, 6K have BRaw internal but can you use them without external monitor ? Not really. Nikon Z6, Z6 II with Blackmagic Video Assist 12G 5'' will be a smaller and lighter setup, not to mention that you get also a great photo camera, Full Frame out of the box, in body image stabilization, very good and compact EVF and much better auto focus in video. Can put the recorder in a bag on my side and have a HDMI cable hanging from the camera. No such big deal if want to be as much unnoticeable as possible. Problem is that Z6 with Ninja V line skips in ProRes RAW. And will most likely do the same with Blackmagic video assist. According to initial reviews Z6 II line skips as well. Another problem was that when recording externally you loose EVF on Z6. If Nikon solved those problems in Z6 II and with Blackmagic recorders, I am in. Agree that 10bit 4:2:2 is perfectly OK for most. But it has it price too. Usually it is x264 encoded, which is more difficult to edit in Resolve, while BRaw cuts like butter. So am willing to use a recorder anyway. It saves me time in post and it is nice to have 5 inch monitor. Prefer this setup most of the time.1 point -
