  1. I am indeed! I meant to thank bloggers (including Andrew specifically) for bringing the issue of overheating up so much. The pressure about the timer nonsense forced Canon to change the way the camera monitors temperatures, which is the reason the mod works at all.

  3. Firstly, I think if you go the Sony route, the best cameras for your needs would be either the a6400 or the a6600. Don't quote me on this, but I think that one (or both) of them have no record limits in 4K, are better at resisting overheating, and have a larger battery. Sony LCD screens tend to get dim when recording in 4K to help reduce overheating. I am not sure if this dimming has been reduced / eliminated with the a6400 or the a6600. The older cameras (a6300, a6500) would overheat and have a very dim (and highly reflective) screen. But hey, what they lacked in terms of monitoring, they made up for in being a great mirror 😬 a6000 and a6100 are 1080p only (as far as I can remember). If one does experience overheating, it has been claimed by others that using either a battery grip or a dummy battery will help reduce overheating. The main problem I think you might run in to with the a6X00 bodies is what lens you are going to get. The 16-55 f/2.8 G is a great lens but it costs $1,300 🤬 The kit lens is horrible (16-50 f/3.5-5.6 pz). Maybe it is usable at f/8, but there are so many sample variations you might have to buy four and return three of them before you can find one that works well at f/8. The other options are the 18-135 f/3.5 - 5.6, and the older 18-105 f/4 which some people like because of the power zoom feature. Don't know if it is parfocal nor do I know if it breathes heavily. I would imagine if it is a PowerZoom lens that it would be parfocal, but then again... Sony. If you want a prime, the 50mm f/1.8 OSS (the aps-c version, not the full frame version) is quite good. But it comes to 75mm full-frame equivalent, which is kind of an odd focal length. I don't know how the 30mm f/1.8 OSS and the 35mm f/3.5 macro do. I think they are pretty good though. Avoid the older 20mm f/2.8 and the 16mm f/2.8 as they aren't designed to work with the newer autofocus system, so they are slow to focus and will just leave you crying. And finally, you might want to check out this video when you have a moment just so you get some perspective of what Panasonic AF is like compared to Sony AF. Both the a6400 and the a6600 should have equal AF performance to the a7 III used in this demonstration. Might even have BETTER AF since I think the a6600 has improved tracking over the a7 III (don't quote me on that). Go to the 9:15 mark to watch the Autofocus tests, the comparisons with Sony are near the end of the autofocus testing section.

  4. Any one ever saw a iPhone teardown? It is a battery, a tiny mainboard, two or 3 camera modules, screen module and some connectors. The BOM cost for this in the iPhone 12 Pro is US$406 (https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_12_pro_bom_come_up_to_406-news-46442.php), probably much less, since Apple could get massive discounts buying it in bunch. Let's say it goes to US$300. Almost no mechanical adjustments needed, the assembly might be very cheap. Easily the profit is around 300% per unit. Now get a Nikon camera, see the immense complexity of it, the much higher price of a much bigger sensor (made in fractions of quantity of smaller smartphone chips), the amount of mechanical adjustments needed, which translates in much costly labor. Probably the profit is MUCH lower, with more complexity, and in 2019 Nikon sold around 1.73 million units between DSLR and mirrorless. Apple sold around 37,7 million units of the iPhone 11 in the FIRST HALF of 2020. My bets is that they don't give a damn to the traditional camera market.

  7. It depends what version is: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_m1-1804-vs-amd_ryzen_9_3950x-932 https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_m1-1804-vs-amd_ryzen_9_4900hs-1285 And here's with Intel: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_m1-1804-vs-intel_core_i9_10980hk-1329 Yet: https://laptopmedia.com/comparisons/preliminary-apple-m1-vs-intel-core-i9-10980hk-the-m1-is-better-in-single-core-but-loses-in-multi-core/ Still on PC side, try your luck with a much power AMD: here (from same source BTW). I'd say 16GB VRAM eGPU is not to neglect willing to use Resolve. Looks like we should all pay more attention on other than only processor related or benchmarks, especially on Resolve side: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/studio/products/ Hope this helps you guys as useful info before any decision what stuff fits better your needs: https://www.cnet.com/news/how-i-built-my-dream-8k-capable-video-editing-pc/ https://mediapc.com.au/media-pc-mpc500r-ryzen-workstation/ So the news is as someone already said up there:

  8. Accurate AF is critical in this particular instance. Sony is the answer as things stand and it’s just a question of which A6000 series or whether the ZV1 suits my needs best. I am attracted to one of the A6000’s purely because they are APSC. Every other consideration, ZV1. The only other option that might interest me would be one of the Fujis and am looking at that today.

  9. https://petapixel.com/2020/11/28/this-guy-watercooled-his-canon-r5-and-unlocked-unlimited-8k/ Very interesting. The camera is now actually reading thermal data instead of the internal timer, so cooling it works from the looks of it. This matches with other reports that you can now put a r6 into the fridge to help it cool down or https://m.dpreview.com/articles/3725693825/firmware-v1-1-1-makes-the-canon-r6-much-more-usable

  10. @MrSMW I'm with @Thpriest do you really need the entire walk in focus? You can't just set up on a tripod, set it to F8 or higher, focus on a point half way up/down the aisle/walk and throw away the softer parts before and after your focus point? I'm assuming your final wedding videos are far more video than the ones I offer based on the number of cameras alone, but I still would think an entire walk really wouldn't be that interesting. Also I simply use a wider lens like a 24mm which provides even more DOF during things like a walk. It's been my experience that for things like walks clients just like to see themselves performing the action, it doesn't have to be a razor thin DOF or the entire thing. But it also sounds like your wedding clients have a bigger budget than the ones in my area. In my area the budget seems to end up somewhere between are you kidding me and not even close so needless to say I don't film many weddings.

  11. You know there are 2 other threads here about this and the person that did this is on this forum and commented as well right?

  14. Lots of threads about the R5 now, and all of them seem to talk about overheating at some point, but anyhow, I saw the diy perks video the other day, and then I saw another diy-solution where a guy retrofits the cooling from a USB cooler to the back of the camera, which managed to double the time before overheating in 8K. So it got me thinking, what's the easiest, cheapest and non-intrusive possible solution? And I realized, there's a huge amount of cooling solutions for phones/pad since they tend to run hot with games etc. So how about sticking this (or similar) on the back of your R5 when the heat is building up, to quickly cool it down, and then use the time/date hack to reset the timer when needed? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001533895883.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.6e642fe0PPDLeL&algo_pvid=1dd6ee63-9f91-4919-bbfc-f6959be7950f&algo_expid=1dd6ee63-9f91-4919-bbfc-f6959be7950f-0&btsid=0b0a182b16065799936878702ecfbb&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_ Complete with internal chargeable battery, and suction cups for mounting, for 10$. I don't own an R5, yet. Still on the edge, but if anyone has tried something like this, or is willing to try it, that would be just super!

    Photokina is dead

Sad news indeed. The problem is that with floor space at €400 per square metre before you've so much as put a piece of carpet down let alone build it out and staff it then spending €100 a pop on DHL to round trip a loan unit to thirty YouTubers that are hungry for gear to review is a no brainer for them. As most products are lucky to have a buzz that lasts beyond two weeks of initial excitement anyway then doing it this way lets manufacturers own these short periods rather than having to share them with every other new product launch as they would at an exhibition. UK visitors to European exhibitions also make up quite a sizeable portion of the overall attendance (15% at IBC for example, second only to the 18% of the host country) and that is about to get far more complicated after 1st of January. The days of popping over to Amsterdam or Cologne on EasyJet and waltzing through immigration and being at the RAI or Messe 45 minutes later with your grubby paws on new cameras will sadly be a thing of the past as you'll need a visa to get in to the country in the first place and a work visa if its a trade show.

  16. M Motors require an interface cable but you do not require any for Nucleus N motors as these are included with the AFX.

  17. And here is the best basis for selecting a computer, the operating system you are happiest with. Most important I think. Mac users have traditionally paid more for Apple hardware than PC users paid for Windows hardware, precisely for the same reason, that they prefer the OS. (I am one of those.) But now for the first time (?) Mac users can pay a little less.

  19. Those are top tier desktop chips from AMD with the 5800x costing around $550. The answer, if price is included, is No. As far as video editing, these new macs offer amazing performance for the dollar. If you use resolve or FCP the future is bright for apple silicon powered macs. So I don’t find those benchamarks from pugent very relevant unless you routinely do heavy CPU tasks other than video editing, encoding, decoding. If you game well you know what you need.
