HBO Max streaming controversy - Christopher Nolan versus Warner
jpfilmz and 3 others reacted to AnthonyBert for a topic
Well they had it coming... WB did not kill anything... Nolan did. as well all the top actors and top director...Movie budget are getting completely out of hand.. Nolan took 20 million salary for tenet. How can that be justified? Top actor are paid tens of millions. Now, the last time I wanted to go to the cinema, probably 18 months ago, the tickets were £15.50 for their so called Imax experience... So 31 quid for my wife and me. imagine if we had the kids!! Well enough said... We simply didn't go. not because we can't afford it but because it's insane to spend such an amount to pay for a below par experience. the last few times I have been to the cinema in the last 5 years they were 10 to 15 people max in a 300 seat cinema... What experience is that? my suggestion... Bring actors and directors back down to earth, pay them decently.. make good film with good script and story for 25 million max, put the cinema ticket around £6-8, and I bet you that they will fill up again... or go on spending 200millions on some crap with high price ticket and the 20th century fox and the others will follow in the footstep of WB...4 points -

Hey all - I've been using the R5 extensively on a variety of shoots the past couple of months and have absolutely loved it. The AF is spot-on, the HQ 4k modes are gorgeous, the user experience is amazing, the 120fps is the best I've used outside of the C300 III. So far, I have had zero overheating issues. The timer in 4k HQ has gone down from 25-minutes to 20-minutes a couple of times, but have never had any issues. Just released last night is a music video I directed, shot, and edited. Outside of some tripod shots, I'd say 90% of the shoot was shot on the R5. Youtube compression sucks so there seems to be some artifacts, but they aren't present in the 4k ProRes export. Enjoy!3 points -

- I always shoot in VLOG, when color grading are you using a LUT or doing manual primaries correction? I've stopped using LUTS for primaries and get much better results simply grading by hand. In DR I create 3 nodes (primaries, curves, false color), I use the primaries node to set the Lift, Gamma, and Gain, I set Saturation to 90%, and I set Contrast to 1.17. I then fine tune the image in the curves node and check skin exposure using a false color LUT in the false color node. I've attached a screen shot from a recent fashion show, showing before and after. I have never had a BM so I don't know if the attached image has more grain than a BM in the same situation so I will let you be the judge of that. What really impressed me about the attached image is that I was able to recover the white balance. Someone turned on a very warm spotlight right as the show started and I did not have time to adjust the WB (the joys of shooting fashion shows). -For IS, with the Sigma adapter attached for some reason most of the modes get disabled for me and it doesn't seem to give me the option to turn off body IS. My Canon EF 24mm has lens IS and I haven't tested which is better, so I've just left everything at their defaults and it seems to all work itself out. -For S&Q I never use it, I shoot everything in 4K and mostly at 60FPS, I feel like all of the modes in the S&Q options are going to require that I deliver at 1080P so I haven't experimented with the modes. -I don't use AF at all, since I can't use continuous AF with the adapter I just use hybrid AF.....so half press the shutter to get focus then MF from there. -Depending on the lens the magnifier will automatically come on when you set the dial to MF and start turning the focus ring as long as you are not already recording. In the menus you can set the center button of the focus selector dial to magnify when in MF so that's how I have mine set. Some of my lenses like the Canon 24mm-105mm don't automatically magnify when I turn the focus ring but the EF Sigma 50mm does as long as the selector is in MF.3 points -

Here's how the music industry is... https://news.sky.com/story/nile-rodgers-calls-on-mps-to-tackle-unfair-streaming-system-12155250 Big profits for Spotify but talent kept completely in the dark. We cannot have our culture controlled in this way and pimped out over the internet whilst live audiences become obsolete.2 points -

You also? I’m also waiting for yet another remake of Charlie’s Angels. I think @Trek of Joy said it above and that is Covid-2020 has only accelerated the demise of The Big Screen. Personally, I would rather watch movies at home these days because the ‘traditional’ experience is mostly over-priced and unpleasant. I can’t think of a single valid reason to ‘go to the pictures’ these days. Not one. Other than rose-tinted nostalgia. I wish it was otherwise. This has nothing to do with the film industry though, just consumption.1 point -

Add up the total box office revenue for those 30 films. Streaming will not pay out. This isn't about streaming being evil and multiplex experience being great. Actually it has left a lot to be desired for a long time and is overpriced. Streaming is great. But it cannot come at the expense of cinema culture, independent cinemas, art-house cinemas, and millions of jobs. That's what is on the line now. As far as what's popular, of course it's all going to be comic book escapism and family friendly - that's what consumers want. You're not going to have dark, brooding 18 rated stuff dominating the box office! It doesn't dominate Netflix by view-count either! If you look at the top 100 of the music charts, that's 99% artistically shallow as well - you don't expect to find complex themes appealing to the mainstream, because most people just want some escapism or a family day out... most people don't care about cinema and craft, like we do. It's obvious every time you go to a cinema isn't it? Mainstream and popular has always been derivative and lowest common denominator stuff. Although I think Joker at $333m box office isn't to be sniffed at, for what's essentially an art-house movie... Albeit one that uses a super hero carrot to entice the general public! And you have the occasional Nolan, or quality popcorn movie doing well. 007. Lord of The Rings etc. But if we destroy those communal cinema experiences and box office revenue by making all new major releases come to streaming at same time as cinema, you really damage the entire movie industry financially, not to mention piss off a lot of talent who as Nolan said, went to sleep one day working for cinema, and woke up working for a HBO Max bait and switch. It's a great thing to have your work destined for the big screen and illustrious cinema-land. What would David Lynch make of it? Can you really experience cinema on a laptop screen?1 point -

You must go to very different cinemas than me. I would rather see a movie at home than at the cinema, precisely because at home I can focus on it. At the cinema there's a high chance for people to talk during the movie, kick seats, etc. plus as mentioned before, it's a total rip off with the snacks and all. Last time I was at the cinema I paid 50 CHF (47 €, 57$) for two people. That's just not worth it to me tbh. And then chances are your movie isn't even in the best setup (biggest screen, high res, good audio, etc.) unless it's Marvel Avengers or so.1 point -
I've always thought Nolan was more mainstream to begin with. Even Tarantino is just around because he has a following. Its always been about money. Lots of good stuff comes out on streaming services.1 point

I agree with Etudiant, the cinema experience isn't fun anymore. It has slowly died a greedy death. We now have something that is designed by an algorithm, for a minority audience with the shortest attention span on earth. Then, they complain that nobody comes to see the movies anymore. What happened to something for everyone? Why does it have to be blockbusters or nothing? It's not about distribution or what a director wants. It's about making art for an audience. If you do it right, people will come. It doesn't matter where it's shown.1 point

Once S1H gains momentum at filmschools, it will produce more and more impressive films. Today a friend of mine entered the realm of Varicam colour science and massive cinema image quality with the S1H. I was close to buy one myself, because I was going to sell my S1 due to the paid VLog update and the 10bit 4K60p of the S5. Tell you what, the VLog 10bit puts the S1 way ahead of a C300II image wise, no contest at all! If S5 will continues to sell well, and if Panasonic keeps their model philosophy in logic and neat order, they will grow and give Sony a good run for the money. My friend owns a GH5 and films with Arri at his school. If the S1H convinces him for his project, he is the usual film school image connoiseur, it will be on a whole lot of film school shoots. Film school in Germany means some free tickets for the large German film festivals as Berlinale and others. The S line I think will rock the scene. I hope I can be part of it.:)1 point

Is Panasonic Leaving The Camera Market?
jgharding reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I really wanted to like the S1 and even after getting the S5 I went back and looked at the S1 again especially since it has a full HDMI port and will soon be able to do internal 6K, not to mention it can still use the same XLR adapter I am using with the S5, the only things I don't like is the screen is not a full flip / tilt screen, besides the lenses and AF situation, and they charge for the VLOG "upgrade" which is why I never had it in the GH5. I use the S5 at odd angles and on a gimbal quite often so that tilt flip screen is pretty important to me. I truly thought CLOG3 was as good as it gets, but working with VLOG out of the S5 is pretty incredible. The way I can push and pull the 10bit VLOG footage coming out of the S5 I thought was only possible with RAW footage. I always feel like I haven't exposed properly when the WFM says everything is still in range then I drop it into Resolve and a few clicks and it looks perfect. That's my main concern....how many of us are out there? The cameras are great but if they are losing money on them how much longer will they keep making them? Everyone is predicting Nikon's fall, but it seems to me like Panasonic is the one in more trouble than Nikon.1 point -
It is impressive but completely ignored smartphone... Imagine that I didn't have a single idea that they even had selling smartphones!1 point

Yeah I'm using the S1H and Nucleus Nano, the stills are amazing and the high-res photo mode is exceptional for still subjects, Vlog images are beautiful, and though Ninja V RAW is of limited use TBH it's still nice to have I think the issue is... how many of us are there? For me this is the best image available outside of Red and Arri, but are there enough of us who want it to keep them making these cameras?1 point

By "HW" updates are you meaning new, physically different cameras with new hardware? I'm not sure how many people market-wise are buying into the new L-cameras (anecdotally, several work buddies and colleagues just purchased the S5) but I am thrilled about my S1, especially with the recently announced firmware update coming sometime in Q1 of 2021, which means I'll get internal 6k, anamorphic modes and pro res raw via the ninja v. I literally won't need a new camera for years to come. Amazing dynamic range, really good ibis for handheld work, big, bright EVF, very reliable low-light dual-ISO, gorgeous stills, great battery life, and built like a tank. A lot of people care about autofocus, but I love my vintage contax zeiss lenses and they're what I prefer to use anyway so it doesn't matter to me. Plus if I really need it I can just pick up a nucleus nano and the fancy new ToF sensor from @BTM_Pix and voila, AF problems solved.1 point

HD on a 4K timeline
newfoundmass reacted to MurtlandPhoto for a topic
In Premiere, scale to frame size does some calculations to best scale the footage to the timeline resolution, but it is not optimized for doing any sort of keyframe scaling afterwards. Set to frame size is much better for that. It's a confusing thing to explain, but basically if you're going to want to do anything beyond just filling the frame then it's better to use set. Original HD footage on UHD timeline. Notice the scale is at 100. Scale to frame size. Now notice the scale is still at 100. Set to frame size. Now notice the scale is at 200. Scale vs. set use different methods to interpolate the frame to the desired size. Scale uses a method that sort of locks the picture in and results in poorer quality should you deviate from the initial setting. Set uses a different method that better allows for flexibility of resizing later like for digital zooms and reframing.1 point -
I think I might have something in my eye after watching that... Feliz Navidad. Our usual festive trip to Sierra Nevada is sadly off limits this year due to the regional border closures but on Wednesday we will be able to move across municipality borders again so like a true ex-pat I will be out buying British biscuits from the grocery store that has remained off limits for the past month! If you think the child in your film is excited you want to see what I'll be like armed with a few packets of chocolate digestives.1 point

I don't think we will ever know if Sony is refusing to let Panasonic use the technology or if Panasonic truly thinks what they have can be superior one day. When a camera maker is dependent on their competitor for their imaging sensor that can't be a good situation.1 point -
Looks like I was wrong about using my iMac in target mode as a monitor. I just read "iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can’t be used as Target Display Mode displays." Bummer - looks like I need a new monitor for my new iMac when I purchase it.1 point
