  1. We just finished our cinematography reel from some of our favourite images that we have filmed over the past years. Some of the images were captured in the magic of the moment and some were staged with lights etc... SEE YA 2020!

  3. You talk from your angle. Return. Business. There isn't one type of filmmaker. Your motivation is not mine. Your clients are not mine. Your product isn't mine. Etc, etc, etc. There are smartphones recording 8k right now. Your clients aren't expecting you will deliver to them in 8k. That part we both understand. The part that you don't understand is that your liking, your needs aren't mine. Vice versa. I am recording 8k right now. I want to have my masters in 8k. Again: your reasons aren't mine. I am not expecting they are. I imagine you too.

  4. Yes, it is. Multi-million dollar Hollywood films don't need it. Different production values. Different gear. Etc. We cannot compare their cameras with ours. Our 1080p is far away of theirs. Our 8K is a way to improve our production value. Different targets too. We can shoot 8K today, why to end with a master below than that!?? Why not take advantage of a future proof?

I do agree, as someone who has actually built a few systems over the years, that doesn't sound like actually building a system up. You more or less got a fairly somewhat bare bones system, then threw in a few extra choice parts to super charge it up. To be fair, as I get older and value my limited time on the earth more highly, and as I grow more and more out of touch with the latest fine details of latest PC products, I too could see myself doing similar for a future PC "build". Just get a barebones build, then throw in the extra RAM / GPU / HDD / SSD that I source myself. As those things are easy easy to install yourself. Am actually right now using this very second a PC I completely bought from China:

  6. Ok, ya'll convinced me to pull the trigger. I have an Resolve activation card and speed editor on the way... whenever B&H gets them in stock, anyway. Looks like 2021 will, among other huge video related changes for me, will be the year of Resolve. I don't imaging I'll entirely ditch Adobe, but it's more than time to learn a new NLE/workflow.

  7. Another year over and what a shit one it was, to be quite frank about it. We all deserve a bit of peace and happiness at Christmas after this, to get our spirits up so that's my hope for all of you - have a good one, and cheers for your EOSHD-ing all year through thick and thin, keep the passion and let's keep our heads above water! And I hope all your front rooms look as great as this...

  8. If the II model had been launched as the original, it would have been a lot more popular, but then the same could be said for a lot of kit, but for many, the original Z6 just underwhelmed (compared with certain other options). Had something like the II been launched a couple of years back, I probably would have gone with it but it was only the lack of 4K 60 and twin card slots that put me off. The lack of 10 bit also, but that would have been my compromise. Well it’s still 8 bit, internal anyway and folks are waiting on the 4K 60, so still losing customers I suspect. Anyway, original Z6 at what are now much lower than launch prices...I like the look of the thing, the size, the weight, the lenses. Tried one briefly, but preferred the XT3 in every way except the lack of IBIS and the XT4 fixed that. So it’s not for me personally, but that shouldn’t put anyone else off and if you like it, great, go create with it!

XMAS DOGGIES!! My only question is - what alcohol did you put in those little barrels? Brandy perhaps, for the holiday season? Whisky for a more straight-up drink? ...Tequila perhaps? 🙂 🙂 🙂

  10. Fair enough. Unfortunately, your budget isn't sized appropriately for the resolutions you're talking about. I think you have three paths forward: Give up on the laptop and add a zero to your budget, making it $20000 instead of $2000, then go find where people are talking about things like multi-GPU-watercooling setups and where to put the server racks and how to run the cables to the control room Do nothing and wait for Apple to release the 16" MBP with their new chipset in it (this could be a few years wait though and no guarantees about 8K) Work with proxies Proxies are the free option, at least in dollar terms, and you probably don't need to spend any money to get decent enough performance. I'd suggest rendering 1080p proxies in either Prores HQ or DNxHD HQ. This format should be low enough resolution for a modest machine to work with acceptable performance, but high enough resolution and colour depth so that you can do almost all your editing and image processing on the proxy files, and they will be a decent enough approximation of how the footage looks. Things like NR and texture effects would need to be adjusted while looking at the source footage directly, but apart from that you should be able to work with the Proxy files and then just swap to the source files and render the project in whatever resolution you want to deliver and master in.

  11. You can edit a 8k film with a 1000$ laptop. Just import your originals in 8K, make 1280p prores LT Proxies on a 1280p timeline to edit en send reviews. Now that you're happy with the cut export a XML cut list to grade in Resolve on the 8K original from the edit only converted to prores 444. Then grade on a 8K timeline previewed in 1080p or 4k. Then export in 8K master prores HQ or DNXHR. You can stay in Resolve for all the steps and make proxys and optimised medias along the way. it's 300$. Far cheaper then a 5 000$ system you ask for.

    My C70 just arrived!

The video is for a guitar pedal brand, and the track was recorded especially for this video. I need more time with the C70 and I need to see how it is with RF lenses (but they are $$€€££!!) Id say it’s definitely worth the price tag. It fits in everything a video camera has into a very helpful (and innovative) form factor. You just pick up and shoot, no messing around. It’s the form factor of the future, in my opinion. Its always nice to have RAW, however I barely use it. For its purpose, I don’t think it needs it. But is always nice to have. The footage is very high dynamic range, I’m not used to it being this high. It’s easy to grade and the footage looks great. The A7SIII is a little more contrasty. 4k120 is slightly softer, whereas the A7SIII is the same in every 4k frame rate. The AF is good on Sigma 18-35, not great on the 50mm. Not used RF yet. It’s not as good as the A7SIII with native lenses. The A7SIII is more featured and works fully in all recording modes. I need more time with the C70 but my early impressions are very positive. The A7SIII is really in it’s own “space”, it’s probably the best all round video tool for the money and in my opinion, “camera of the year.” It’s almost flawless and very refined. The C70 wins as a conceptual innovation. It’s beautiful to hold and makes shooting very joyful.

  13. That's fine - but you're going to need to spend a *lot* more than 2000.

  14. I understand you want to express your idea. Where you're going. People are not formatted. You like your way. You use your 4k camera. Other people record 8k. For different reasons, not yours. It's useless to tell other people to do what we want to do. The world will not change because of your beliefs. Also useless because 8k doesn't cost thousands and thousands of dollars right now. We aren't all trying to follow hollywood. Lots of filmmakers in the world, you're just one of them.

  15. Indeed! That would be another great option. Just tonnes of other great choices out there other than the a7Smk3 I just tend to be an advocate for "maximum bang for buck" / "best ROI", and at US$3.5K it doesn't seem like the a7Smk3 is that. True, but if someone is looking for a compact low light monster for sub $1K then it isn't too shabby. (especially if someone has a strong bias towards Sony) Their prices have fallen surprisingly low thanks to the a7Smk3 (lower than I expected! As the a7Smk3 was priced so high, I didn't think it would have so much influence on secondhand a7Smk2 prices?). On eBay today I got offered an a7Smk2 for US$800 (came with a Metabones too, so essentially it was US$700 for an a7Smk2? If you could sell the metabones for even just a hundred bucks)

That makes sense, most of my work is fast turnaround time sensitive footage like events, music videos, fashion shows, modeling videos, virtual tours, seasonal videos, small business promo video work, etc. I'm known for fast turnarounds which helps me stand out in my area. I love shooting all day then finishing the edit that night while the experience and events of the day are still fresh on my mind. I typically shoot the full day's event or project, edit all night until I complete the rough edit (usually around 4AM the next morning), sleep for a few hours, then do the color grading, titles, fix the rough edges, etc. There is no way I could do that waiting for proxies for every clip. I definitely think its incredible how far PCs have come in such a short period of time and proxies let you use just about anything and still get editable footage, especially when it starts out highly compressed like H.264 and H.265.

  19. The a7S mk3 just seems stupidly overpriced! You could buy a secondhand URSA Mini 4.6K, or Canon C200, or Sony FS7, or even a Sony PMW-F5 for the same price (OR LESS!!) You may even have enough money left over to pick up a secondhand Nikon D750 / D500 / Sony a7R / etc as a terrific stills camera! Or if you must go with just a single hybrid camera, the previous a7Smk2 is now a steal on ebay for around US$1K or less.

  21. Tried 10bit HDR Log V3 with my Samsung Galaxy 10+. Not impressed. Maybe it's better on IPhone 12. Keeping my EOS M for a cheap small and light camera with impressive image quality. Gorgeous colors, great resolution at 2.8K crop mode. Especially after 4K up scaling. Endless fun 🙂 ML Raw at 2.8K crop mode from Zeek:

  23. But, at what price? My budget is $1000-$2000... Resolve, I believe the most recommended today perhaps. Is the use of Proxies too much of a hassle? Thank you.

  24. You have to set render cache to User, Fusion Memory Cache to on, and ideally set a dedicated cache disk (SSD or faster) that is not used by the OS and that is not scanned by Anti-Virus. Even after doing all of that, you have to wait until the title is cached (red line above the title will turn blue) then you can finally playback in real-time. The other option is to not use Fusion titles and use regular titles instead. In the titles menu there are a few basic titles and the rest are Fusion titles. If you can get away with basic titles you can bypass all of the Fusion performance issues. Even better, create the title in something else as a png with transparency then add it as an overlay on the timeline; of course this rules out motion graphics but it is another way to workaround Fusion if you just need a simple title. I did check out the Source Tape feature but my entire workflow is optimized around Windows Explorer, I have a source clips folder, I drag clips as I use them to a selected clips folder, and I only import the clip at the time I need it to the media pool where I set an in/out point and drag it to the timeline for editing. For me this makes things very easy and it is easy to see what I have already used and what media I still have to pick from. Also, after a project is done, if I start running out of space in my archives I know I can delete all of the media in the source clips and discarded clips folders in Windows Explorer without affecting the finalized project. To use the Source Tape feature I'd need to just dump everything into the media pool. I agree with you, its not meant to go much beyond the basics of editing. I do wish Blackmagic Design would focus more on improving Fusion than the Cut page. I think they are more focused on attracting PP and FCP users than they are in fixing the Fusion performance issues. Funny thing is, I think even PP and FCP users will be confused by the Cut page.

For someone that says he doesn't want to build, sure seems like you jumped through a lot of hoops to get that PC! Not that I'm not impressed, and you got a HP supported Enterprise System, just seems like a chore. I'm transitioning off of PC editing and will just pay the "Apple Tax" for their computers. Yeah, it's more expensive, but oh well. The biggest concern with a new Apple is getting the thing out of the box. OTOH, I might Hackintosh my old PC just for grins...but I'm not going to rely on that sort of futzing around to be my main editing rig. (which, honestly, my editing is not THAT demanding anyway. I'm a make-everything-proxies-kind-of-guy, so powerful editing rigs aren't a necessity)

  26. I see the S1 regularly for $1500. It’s obviously a more dedicated video camera but you get way more lens choices and of course phase detect AF with the Nikon. I don’t think the video IQ on the S1 can be understated. Throw a decent LUT on (emotive color) and you just get a really stunning image. I wish Nikon would give an internal 10 bit recording option.

I think the Z4 was around $1600USD but it takes a lot of work to get it that low. HP charges ridiculous rates for their memory and addin NVME cards so I used a few tricks to end up with just the tower, CPU, memory and power supply, from there I sourced parts elsewhere, so I guess I did kind of still build it out. - I always pick the Linux option when buying from HP so that I don't pay for Windows 10 since I already have a license -I picked the cheapest SATA storage possible since I already had NVME sticks from my previous system -I picked no add-in video card since I already had that -No optical storage since I never use CDs or DVDs -No keyboard or mouse -The one thing I don't skimp on is the Power Supply, I got the 1000W version due to the video card and to power all of the internal storage -etc etc, until it was almost barebones, I then called and managed to get a few more things removed and an additional discount over the phone. Many people don't know if you build a system on the Dell or HP website then save it, call them and ask for a discount then give them your build invoice a lot of times you can get up to 20% more off especially around the holidays, you can also get them to remove stuff you don't need like hard drives which the online system configurator won't let you do. You can also go to the outlet version of the online store and sometimes find good deals there on returns or canceled orders but when I got the Z4 it was too new to find any deals in the outlet store. After getting the tower with 8GB of memory, no graphics, almost no storage, etc. I then got a 4 port NVME Dell PCIe controller card on eBay for $100.00 (HP wanted $1300.00 for only 2TB), 64GB of memory for $150 (HP wanted $1600.00!!), dual SSD drives, etc. I also got the RTX2080Ti used on NewEgg for around $700.00USD. The main thing I've learned over the years is I don't want to deal with motherboards, picking out a tower, power supplies, and memory; these are usually the source of instability later on. HP's memory was so expensive that I went ahead and got that separate and even then I pulled the memory that it shipped with and used the part number to exactly match the vendor, bus speed, etc. online. I think the total build to do it all over again today would be right around $3300.00USD. I had a lot of the NVME and SSD storage from other systems, and the RTX3080 brand new is only $700 (if you can find one) which is better than my 2080Ti. I only buy/build a new system every 7-8yrs or so and so I saw it as a worthwhile investment. Since I use Davinci Resolve for video editing, I think my system is pretty much future proof, all I'll need to do is upgrade the video card again at some point once H.265 10bit 4.2.2 is supported on the chip. The system itself is rock solid stable, with enterprise class reliability which was my intent. Another thing that a lot of people do not realize is how power can make their system unstable. I live in FL, the #1 place is the world for lightning strikes, so I have a line conditioner and two surge protectors between my system and the wall outlet. Slightly dirty power is the cause of so many system instability issues and people have no idea that's what's causing their problems; for a system that gets taxed like a video editing workstation I always recommend spending another $200USD or so for a good line conditioner and surge protector. Yes, the CPU and video card is always the most expensive parts. I've never understood how motherboards can be so cheap; to my eyes they look way more expensive than the CPU let alone the video card.
