Review of the year, 2020 - THE YEAR FROM HELL!!
PannySVHS and one other reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
It was a disastrous year for an event / wedding shooter like me. I hope that things get better by summer but I don't have a ton of faith after the shit show these last 10 months have been. The way the US has handled this has been utterly embarrassing, and it's not just the government either. The selfishness, greed and ignorance I've seen has been brutal. I always knew it was there, but it has been impossible not to be beaten over the head by it every single day. And those aren't political statements, they're facts to everyone except the deluded cultists of he who shall not be named. Good riddance to a truly awful year. Here's to a better 2021 for all of us.2 points -
Andrew Reid on Filmmaking: When the truth is so awful, only liars win
ntblowz reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Here begins a series of blog thoughts from me on the state of the world and filmmaking in 2021, after humanity decided to go headlong into a full dystopia like you see in the movies. There will in the future be many great cinematic masterpieces about our plight as citizens in the year 2020. Anyone who has seen Black Mirror writer Charlie Brooker’s “Death to 2020” on Netflix can see for themselves the historic plot twists and sheer lunacy of what we’ve been going through the past year. New blog post... https://www.eoshd.com/news/andrew-reid-on-filmmaking-when-the-truth-is-so-awful-only-liars-win/1 point -
I feel like I am wasting my time in the pursuit of nice looking, quality, well graded footage. The majority of people that are in my social circle have no idea what a calibrated TV looks like. Most have the colour and contrast set to "Irradiate" and sit within 6 feet of their 60-85 inch TV's whilst they tan. The sharpness is set to "stun" exhibiting awful halos and because they sit so close you can practically define each pixel. And... because frame rates used by filmmakers are not smooth enough for TV manufacturers the TV's now interpolate a few extra frames between the original frames making for a "much smoother viewing experience". On Christmas day I was watching "Singing In The Rain" on a relatives 85 inch TV, it looked dreadful with the interpolated frames and over-sharpened image but when I pointed this out it didn't go down to well, so I kept quite for the rest of the day and suffered in silence as so many classic films were simply ruined. I've tried to explain the problem to my friends and convince them that an adjustment is required but it falls on deaf ears, they simply don't care. I have never seen one of my videos look remotely the way it was graded with my calibrated monitor on any TV owned by people within my circle or any of the customers that I visit within my profession. I have to blame the TV manufacturers, but I also believe that the public is generally ignorant with regards calibration, either way a lot of painstaking creativity is currently going to waste. If you made it this far, thank you, I feel better for the rant. Cheers.1 point

Communism isn’t an utopia for a better humanity as it ignores the humanity respectively the human nature completely. It would only work where humans can be programmed in 0 and 1 , otherwise you have to control your population which will always end in a disaster and death. Communism is great for brain storming and philosophy but nothing for reality. That doesn’t mean capitalism is great. It has horrible flaws but it’s the only system humanity created where you are allowed to die as a free men. That’s enough off topic.... B1 point

These things can both be true: Wonder Woman 1984 was blockbuster garbage. A man crying sexism because one shitty blockbuster (out of how many hundreds?) dares to portray men in an unflattering light is whiney, entitled, pathetic, microphallytic nonsense Do you write internet diatribes every time you see a movie that shows woman as oversexualized? As objects of ownership? As conniving bitches? As ditzy morons? You don’t, because if you did your wrists would break because there are so many of them. Look around you, the world is full of awful men doing nightmarish things. Why shouldn’t a clumsy blockbuster get to play with that trope as much as all the tropes about women? The film is absolutely terrible, but loads of terrible films are made by men all year round, filled with cliches and destructive stereotypes. It’s not other people making this an issue about sexism-it’s you. You have drawn a line that says stories by and about women can’t employ the same lazy filmmaking that is rife in Hollywood blockbusters. How is that not the definition of sexism? Also: I’ve seen literally zero hesitance in the media to call this movie lousy. Not sure what you’re reacting to, but nobody I’ve read is hailing this film as a milestone of feminism. Or even trying to defend its sheer awfulness from a filmmaking perspective. Like many small men, you’ve made a little internet fiefdom for yourself by spewing anger on a blog. Yawn. Perhaps turning that angry, critical eye on your own perception of women would prove instructive. Grow up, little piggy.1 point -
Agree with the list. A7S III really is the ultimate camera to save up for and the defining feature for me (didn't expect it at all) was the 9ms rolling shutter and the amazing catalyst stab. The S5 is the next best thing although I wanted it to be Fuji. For 2021, I hope X-H2 (or maybe Sigma fp2) comes out with 12-bit 4k60p RAW CDNG out to a USB-C SSD. Don't like microHDMI/bulky atomos/no-proresraw-in-resolve shenanigan. Also, more unique camera tests from EOSHD! I miss the days when Andrew used to post music videos that he shot with the cameras he'd test...my fav being the Herdwhite video shot on Olympus EM...something 🙂1 point

Why noone except MrSMW showing footage. It´s getting dull in a thread about a fantastic camera. Well here is some S1H showing off the potential of what you and me could achieve too with either a S5 or a S1. I have posted three own S1 vids, so lets keep em coming and let them being discussed as well. So, here it goes S1H showing off for her sisters S1 and S5. Monster cinema cameras unleashed.1 point -
We may be fucked, but we've always been fucked. The movie industry is fucked because it's full of people who love money and have no literary imagination. The same is true of most of the indie film world. Try finding someone who could pass World Literature 101, Film Studies 101 and Art History 101. And we're all surfeited on fictions, to the point where fiction, and language itself, can no longer convey information. That leaves instruction manuals and people pointing out that the lady who's staring into the fishbowl has clipped skintones. And by now it's an undergraduate commonplace, but no less true, that art is not possible in a culture where everything is aesthetisized. Ads on buses, music in elevators, every sales pitch a vile story. There will be no 9th symphonies in a world drowning in jingles. So forget your unmade and unmakeable movies and party on. Nobody cares anyway.1 point

This is a well written post with a lot of truth in it... The corona crisis revealed what was always there, above all the incredible amount of stupidity in the world. BUT: Remember, this isn’t something new. It has always been this way in the course of human history. The difference now is maybe that we have a better overview, because we’re more „connected“ with every part of the world. We get a lot of information that we cannot handle... However, humanity has continuously improved through the ages. There always are ups and downs (such as wars), of course, but in general, I think the world is a better place. It is (in general) healthier, fairer and more educated, to name some examples. So, don’t lose your courage and faith, we need every responsible and reasonable person to engage in improving the world.1 point

It's been a weird year but I can't complain. We once again how incompetent our governments were, and that it's "do as we say, do as we do" as we saw plenty of them break the rules, which would result in fines if they were just regular citizens. I'm no tinfoil hat person, but in many places (mostly speaking about Europe) the coronavirus is used to monger fear and some of the new regulations have nothing to do with Corona anymore, just a wacky power trip to take away our freedoms (can't film cops anymore in France) and getting as much money out of people's pockets. All you see in the news is covid, covid, covid although in Belgium three times more people died from cancer and heart attacks. We don't see banners pop up every ten seconds about how bad smoking is, or one newspaper article out of 2 that obesity kills. Our hospitals don't have the capacity because the same minister of health that is imposing drastic lockdowns and huge fines and other crazy stuff cut through health budget years ago, something he will never mention. Also, old people die, that's how life has worked since ever. The news feels rigged. Social Media is rigged. I got fact checked on facebook about a comedy sketch about Covid and blocked for 7 days. I don't share conspiracy bullshit, this was, pure comedy. Everywhere on social media there are banners about Covid, if you mention it in on facebook, there will be an extra warning in a window. If a video is about covid on youtube, it's surrounded by banners and also has a mention of "learn more about the WHO vaccine trials". Yup, I know it's there, no I don't wanna be sick, but I also don't wanna be spammed/attempted to be brainwashed 300 times a day. Where did the hot milfs in my area go? At least they sounded fun. Youtube is an advertising platform with content, not the other way around. But as influencers are afraid to speak up about shortcomings, we only get "awesome" "focus on the good things" results as they are part of the marketing ploy of the big companies. That's why on the release day of a camera, suddenly you will see 50 different tech reviewers review the same products, clickbait titles and filling the air with as many possible words to have their video as long as possible. Oh, and plenty of them don't know half what they're speaking about, are mediocre camera operators at best, and some are literally worse than dogshit.1 point

PC Builds
Juank reacted to herein2020 for a topic
That was what I was alluding to in regards to the hours of research. I have had every incompatibility imaginable; cases that blocked critical slots, power supplies missing the proper connector to power the video card, memory that was simply the wrong kind (and memory almost always is not returnable), CPU coolers that would not fit the motherboard, motherboard risers that got stripped while screwing them into the mounting board, BIOS's that refused to see the hard drive, BIOS's that refused to see the add in video card, RAID controllers that would do everything you could imagine except let you boot from any drives connected to them, etc. etc. To me adding storage, a video card, and NVME quad port card is a piece of cake compared to dealing with the rest of it. Even for non video editing computers, I no longer build any of them. I just get used enterprise class gear off of eBay. You can get great deals on high end used desktops at the 3yr mark on eBay because that's when many business leases end. And I'll take a 3yr old enterprise class desktop/laptop/networking equipment any day over brand new consumer grade hardware. I actually know a photographer that still uses a 5DIII for photography and the best part is....its the only camera she has ever owned (7yrs)....and she has a single lens which she has never removed from the camera since the day she got it (Canon 50mm). She also has never owned a single flash and when we started talking gear she didn't know the difference between an EF mount lens and an RF mount. She is actually a well known photographer in my area and charges over $300/hr for sessions; AND she is booked for weeks straight. It all seemed crazy to me but she is very friendly, great with families and posing kids, and that is all she does. She literally knows nothing about flashes, gear, diffusion, etc, and shoots 100% natural light, yet she has managed to become a successful photographer in my area; and for post processing she uses a single Lightroom preset which is her signature "look". Meeting her really reminded me that you can make nearly anything work these days and the gear is only a small piece of the big picture.1 point -
I have the 25, 35 and 50mm of this Meike cine lenses. The only downside is the lack of focal length wider than 25mm for X-mount. An optic around 18mm would be really the best. Otherwise, it's good and really good : Long focus throw / Focus ring is very smooth / No focus breathing/ 10 pieces blade /Incredible optical quality / An incredible manufacturing quality (I haven't seen a single dust inside my 3 optics) / All is metal. The 35mm is the focal length I use the most because it's the basic focal length on an APSC sensor.1 point

As a pro Nikon user for 40 years, I have mixed feelings here. I love my d850 for its still image quality and features. But I’d guess their contract with Sony for the sensor limited the video features and codec. As I look to making more video, I only have to look at a used Lumix GH5S for example to see a simple solution for exceptional video features and in-camera 10bit, which for me are more relevant than full frame vs m43. Disappointed by the Z ii offerings. So I won’t invest in a Z body, and will instead likely add a video-centric camera from another maker, even as I still swoon over my 2-year old Nikon 850.1 point

The most funny is this device is here for months and only now pops up some bit of late focus by the manufacturer's side... as seems from this entry for example -- the first one I've seen to follow it up since the announcement last August and release a month after:1 point

Yeah, not surprises here, very underrated one indeed. In Portuguese now (sorry folks, @techie you're right!) but quite of a remark -- selfie camera included on 8K (BTW 5 to 8 minutes before overheating in accordance with the reviewer info/tip) and 4K 120fps for a little bargain, that is, for 800 bucks:1 point

Here's more a few frames of high resolution & frame rate coupled to a nice review on the device: Poor highlights can be compensated with Camera2 API (you can also rewind & FF for a real comparison test among three of the best offers on the Android side IMHO: Samsung, Xiaomi & ASUS -- from Taiwan, so use subs tool as you wish) : WTH this bargain is... A perfect no-brainer along the best mode/tool setting:1 point
