Who will kill filmmaking first?
norliss and 3 others reacted to Tim Sewell for a topic
Australia is a continent, with huge natural resources, thousands of miles from anywhere else. Canada is half a continent, next door to the biggest market in the world, and if you think that neighbour exerts no influence on Canadian policy-making, you haven't been taking notice. New Zealand is the most remote developed country in the world and the USA is the world's richest economy. The UK is a small-middling tiny island, riven by some of the worst (entirely home-grown) inequality in the developed world, on the shores of the world's second richest economy, which also happens to be an existentially-important market for our exports. 80% of those exports are services, the continuation of which will rely on us satisfying EU standards across almost the entirety of our own economy. Up until January 1st 2020 we had one of the most important says in the formulation of EU policy and regulation. We now have none. No say at all. When the EU brings in new regulations or laws that impact the sectors in which we rely on our exports to them - most sectors, that is, we will have to adhere to them or face sectoral disasters, complete with job losses and bankruptcies. Took back control there, dincha? I'm dipping out of this thread now, as we're only re-prosecuting the same old arguments. You Brexiters don't have and never have had a single cogent argument in favour of leaving the EU, save for nonsense about sovereignty and patriotism. Your victory was built on lies and ignorance, fuelled by racism and will benefit nobody except the already-wealthy. Your arguments are glib, ill-thought-out, facile and mostly easy to debunk or disprove. Your yearning for simplicity, in a complex world, is bringing us close to ruin and you'll be remembered, every one of you, as fools led by charlatans and rightly damned across decades to come.4 points -
That's 80Mbps, which is nothing. At 80Mbps the extra detail in 8K footage from 4K or even 2K would probably be more than half just noise and compression artefacts. Potatojet did some good videos comparing 8K smartphone video with normal resolution video and the 8K image out of these things would still look like complete sh*t even if it was downscaled to 2K. Watch the YT at 1080 or 720p and you can still tell the difference. TLDR; don't bother. It's like a 65MP jpeg image compressed to 24Kb, lots of pixels but they're all crap. I did some tests yesterday on the GH5 modes and got pleasant surprise. Obviously one of the great features of the GH5 is that the image is downsampled from the 5.2K sensor, but I confirmed that the 2X digital crop is also downsampled, the 1080p 60p mode is nicely downsampled, and the 1080p 60p 2X digital crop mode is also downsampled! No Canon Cripple Hammer going on there! Also, the better I get at grading the more that I find that the limitation of the camera is me, and so when people criticise, they're just criticising their own limitations and trying to buy their way out. This was a quick test shot for highlight rolloff - graded in under 2 minutes so not perfect, but every time I look at the footage I forget about newer cameras..3 points

The top two I would like to see are an XH2 and a GH6. I could go with either or neither. Neither especially if this year doesn’t happen for business and my best forecast is for 50% at most and worst case scenario, zero business. I expect we will see an A7iv and it shall be the son of god. For Sony fans...but it probably will be the most capable hybrid camera bar none when it appears.2 points

What EU imposed law in particular hindered you the last 30 years, and finally you were freed from on that great day 2 weeks ago, 1st January 2021, and all was well? Answer it...2 points -
Got the perfect cams for my use, FS700, beautiful Cinealta!:) F3, Pocket Varicam Lumix S1. Total awesomeness. Happy as a resurrector of filmmaking can be (referring to the "who will kill filmmaking first"-thread:) Now, Panny, roll out that awesome update for the S1!2 points

Camera owning plans 2021
leslie and one other reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
None. I've discovered that for 90% of the shots I want to get, an incredibly modest EM10III does the trick. If the other 10% is mission critical, I rent. If not, I simply suffer not being able to do certain visual tricks. So-mo, heavy grading, etc. Which, as I've also discovered are just tricks, not really a big part of fundamental storytelling/production. The burden of not being able to do something actually keeps me more visually "honest." Weirdly, I just don't fret about tech limitations too much anymore. Didn't think that was going to happen so suddenly, but for me it did.2 points -

You've got the wrong end of the stick. I was asking what laws people like yourself needed so much, that we couldn't get before? What did you personally have no control over being in the EU? Why can nobody just provide a simple explanation? I guess we'll just leave it as that a these questions seem to be impossible to answer.1 point -
The UK parliament was famously so powerless to pass its own laws by the iron grip of the EU that it was able to pass a law to <checks notes> leave the fucking EU. You can't "Take Back Control" of something you already had control of.1 point

Why is the idea of UK laws being made in the UK so strange to you? We have our own Parliaments and Assemblies for the purpose of law-making, why do we need another layer of bureaucracy? Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, etc, do perfectly fine, they don't have other countries playing a role in their law-making yet they still have trade agreements and cooperate with other countries.1 point

Well, that plan didn't work. Found a crazy deal on a Sigma FP with a bag full of accessories (VF, shutter release, hot shoe etc.) So I now have that in front of me as my 'B-cam'. Looking forward to testing it out tomorrow and seeing how it holds up in the snowy streets. One thing I'm already struggling with though, and perhaps people can help me (If not I'll ask in the FP discussion tomorrow) Is it possible to have different modes for Stills and Cine? I want Manual for Cine and Aperture Priority for stills. With the menus being based on the setting your on, I kind of assumed shoot settings wouldn't change with the mode switch. Any help is appreciated!1 point

I am the only one who can't read an online newspaper on my cellular?? They have so many ads that I see 10 words of an article at a time, and trying to scroll without clicking on an ad is nearly impossible!!1 point -

I'm glad you're bringing attention to this, @Andrew Reid, as everyone should at least be aware of who is tracking them and why. I have two Firefox addons, one is uBlock Origin for blocking ads, and the other is Blur for blocking trackers. I can confirm that the EOSHD main site has those two Google trackers (which Blur blocks), and the forum has 0. Blur blocks 9 trackers on SonyAlphaRumors even after opting out of cookies, and 67 ads are blocked. It's worth pointing out that even if you are okay with being tracked, the richest companies and people in the world make their money off analysis of your data. It's worth considering whether you want to freely donate your data (which YOU pay for with electricity and internet bills!) to the wealthiest people on earth.1 point -
Z-cam firmware updates continue to surprise
BenEricson reacted to Andrew Calvetti for a topic
Does anyone know if the Z Cam s6G has officially dropped? It was listed with the firmware releases and I just saw this: https://www.soltyscameras.com/product-page/z-cam-s6g-6k-super35mm-global-shutter-cinema-camera-rental I'm pretty much ready to leave Blackmagic for Z cam and this would be the nail in the coffin.1 point -
Andrew Reid on Filmmaking: When the truth is so awful, only liars win

So, here goes a Musikvideo to our shortfilm we shot this summer, Christmas in summertime:) I was DP with a friend of mine. Additionally I did the lights and my buddy will hopefully exchange the favour in doing a splendid edit. Nothing interesting about lensing in this video, besides one lens I had mentioned before and which Andrew bought afterwards as well. We filmed with C300II and Walimex lenses and my S1 with the beautiful Unitor 35-70 2.5-3.5. Really love this lens only thing to dislike is the vari aperture. Soe even filming in 3.5 it will change on the long end. S1 was running the slim 10bit h265 codec with 420 colour and 75mbit. The lens is a real keeper. Used in FF and APSC crop. It has nice resolution and colour and a soft quality to it, very nice mechanically. It was pretty high regarded back then under the labe of Soligor. You can find them also under the Hanimex and other labels. So here we go and Merry Christmas, dear friends!1 point
