    R5 vs R6

I have the R5 and the 1Dx III but not the R6 but the 1Dx III being somewhat similar (probably the same) sensor I may help a bit. R5 FF 4k vs 1Dx III FF 4k is very similar as you say but the rolling shutter is a huge difference. R5 4k 120 is miles ahead of 1Dx III 1080 120….. not even fair. R5 4k LQ is miles ahead of 1Dx III 1080 On the processing of RAW vs. 10bit other than on an M1 or waiting on the new intel CPUs the RAW is way faster in Resolve PC. RAW is much faster. The problem for is mostly storage so it depends on your usage and archiving strategy. I would suggest downloading some files 10bit and RAW and compare on your machine. So far I never hit the recording limit of the R5 and I mostly shoot RAW or 4k 120. But here is cold and I do a lot of 1-2min max takes with breaks in between. Before I was turning the camera off between takes now I don’t bother anymore. But having say that not sure I would live with the R6 risk that I cannot shoot 4k…….. as I said 4k LQ is way better that full hd actually imo is a solid 4k…. R5 big plus: - Rolling shutter - RAW - very usable 120fps - Non overheating 4k modes FF and S35 R6 plus: - cheaper - 4k 60fps quality Are these worth 2k more? Only you can really answer this.

  4. Truly and without a doubt the best camera demo video I have ever seen. Sony may have finally figured out that having random YouTubers who call themselves cinematographers shoot demo cat video footage with their flagship cameras wasn't doing them any justice. I hope they do a BTS on the making of this video, I'd love to see how much rigging was needed. I remember the C300III BTS, they used about $200K worth of rigging and a full production team for their demo video and it didn't come close to comparing to this.

  5. Your turn now Panasonic! Give us a Sony A1 but with the smaller 4/3" sensor in a GH6 and at the low price of $1995! 8K 10bit? 4K 120fps 10bit? Yes please!

  8. After spending a bit of time with @Andrew Reid last year looking at his GFX100, it definitely put itself at the top of my "forever" camera list and one of the pleasant surprises was how much frame coverage was possible with the various FF lenses that we put on it and how adaptable it was in terms of AF adapters for not only EF but Nikon F, which would be a big factor for me. Obviously the price of the GFX100 was eye watering (relative to FF but not other 100mp MF cameras !) but if I squinted a bit I could still see it as "affordable" if not a flat out "bargain". To now be able to get the imaging part of the GFX100 in a smaller and lighter form factor for 40% off is huge.

  9. I've thought a few times about what a GH6 would have to have to be better than the GH5 for me, and there's not many things TBH. Of course, I'm not the kind of person who these 24K - 300 FPS - internal RAW - 48fps burst - eyelash AF - 8kg - $12599 cameras seem to be aimed at. I have stuff invested in MFT too, but would happily re-buy a GH5 if mine broke and if I felt the need to change platforms then it would be far enough in the future that the FF camera I would buy with enough features for me wouldn't be that expensive and the lenses available are just getting more and more available and affordable. I had a burst of FOMO around FF just recently, thinking that if I even change to FF then the lenses that I'd want might be vintage primes and might all be too expensive at that point and I'd have missed out, but I kind of realised that there are enough good FF lenses available new that I could get a 'good enough' set, and partially compensate with filters. Still, if someone gave me one of these new A1 cameras then it would be great - I'd sell it and buy more interesting vintage lenses 🙂

  11. As a fellow Panasonic shooter, I'm gonna need them to really deliver something big with the GH6. They need to meet the markets expectations on things like AF because even though that's not a huge selling point for me personally it is for the future of the M43 system. As someone that's heavily invested in that system I need them to keep innovating and stay relevant, otherwise I need to consider making a switch while my equipment still has value. Others in my shoes have already gone the Sony route but I'd really like to stick with Panasonic if they can give me a reason to. Right or wrong, the reality is that it is hurting Panasonic when the legionz of vloggers and influencers whine about the auto focus. It's not helping them sell cameras.

Just get the Apple M1, H265 for days. If the R6 had the rolling shutter performance of the R5 I’d buy it.

    R5 vs R6

All the hate on the R5 and R6, but dang this footage looks better then any other camera in the same price category. I will be over these camera's when the footage can be edited smoothly on my machine, the DR is somewhat improved with CLOG2 and the overheating problem gets fixed with a firmware update (and also a pricedrop, as they are kinda overpriced atm in europe).

    R5 vs R6

@herein2020 so it seems your main gripe with the R6 was overheating. you do mention in that thread you are in a warm/humid environment. it does seem climate affects the issue in combination with the artificial timers. But yeah overheating seems like a serious potential setback on this camera, especially for a hybrid shooter like myself. @gt3rs Yes those are my conclusions as well. (Canon) RAW is just not my thing, I have only used it once on the C200 and that is Canon RAW light. I can't fathom dealing with 8K RAW file sizes. But of course, it is there on R5 as well as 8K and those are nice future proofing features. The upcoming firmware with Clog3 & RAW Light is also promising. Now 4K120p, that is definitely something nice. I love super slo-mo shots (who doesn't?). Also having a 4K (LQ) fallback option is indeed surely a BIG advantage on cameras prone to overheating. I guess R5 is worth the asking price even though I could do away fine with an R6 (considering I'm upgrading from an EOS R).

  15. One is medium format, the other is 8K. It'd be nice if they could do 4:2:2 but the processing power necessary is too much I'd imagine. This is a huge release, and I am kind of surprised that it hasn't gotten more attention here. Medium format video at this price is insane. This is a game changer and a sign of things to come, even if people don't realize it right now.

  16. Luckily it's an opt-in situation... 🙂 Indeed! GH6 for the win!! Seriously, a GH6 is the only camera that I would contemplate upgrading my GH5 for. Film-making is like any other technical field, there are people who are interested in what the equipment can do, and others who are interested in using it for bragging rights. You forgot the 1080p specs. Ah, don't bother. The GH5 has been killing it for many years now and releases since mostly can't touch it, and this camera is only US$6500 so......

  17. I agree with the sentiment about shooting what you're happy with. I'd also add the caveat of forming your own opinions by doing real testing in controlled conditions and making sure you're getting the tech right. I used to read lots of stuff, and was that "confused mess" that you mentioned, and the way I got out of it was to actually test things myself and see what the effect actually was. All technical choices result in an aesthetic of some kind, and film is a creative pursuit, so it's creating a finished product with the intended aesthetic. If there was no aesthetic component then scripts would be technical manuals or lists of facts about a situation, and there would be no need to show anything other than diagrams on the screen, everything else is about the aesthetic. So when I see someone criticising a technical choice I just see someone who doesn't understand something. We criticise what we don't understand. I think film/video is especially prone to that because there is such a depth of knowledge required and it's deceptively simple, so people don't know that they don't know things. As an example, shooting 1080p and upscaling to 4K has much merit and I do it. I shoot 1080p because I have a GH5 which shoots 1080p in 200Mbps 10-bit 422 ALL-I in both 24p and 60p. I like the 'look' of 1080p and I can edit / colour those files on my laptop without having to transcode, so it doesn't cost me rendering time or money to buy a new computer. I upscale to 4K because YouTube compression is less-worse at 4K than at 1080p. You might think that it's a case of shooting in a 'worse' codec than YT, but it's not, I'm shooting 200Mbps and 4K YT is something like 10Mbps. I've done A/B tests and you can tell which is the 4K master and which is the 2K master upscaled to 4K for YT, but you have to pixel peep and you have to know where to look. For my purposes shooting 1080p gives me almost as many benefits as shooting 4K with a very significant advantage in post-production. That will be a different equation for other people, and I don't criticise everyone for shooting 4K, everyone has to make their own judgements. These judgements also include non-camera stuff and even non-filmmaking things.

    R5 vs R6

Bro I think you know that the R6 will be a great option for you. Think of what you’ve had to work with using canon in the past. You’re getting 4K 10 but super 35 with PDAF. Despite all the limitations I think that’s all you really need, realistically. If you have 2K laying around I’d definitely get the R5 but I don’t think it’s something you need or will really miss not having. My two cents.

Welcome back...its' been awhile. I pretty much posted all of my thoughts on the R6 on the following thread, which is here: And I ended up with the Panasonic S5 which is perfect for my uses in every way (except AF of course) so this thread may be useful as well:

IBIS on R5 smooth with panning in my experience at 24mm. Anything wider and IBIS corrections become noticeable. I spent the extra money for R5: The 14-bit 45MP stills are just awesome Custom Modes Oversampled 4K in S35 mode (hopefully we get some wider RF lenses soon; RF 14-28 f/2 please canon; btw sigmas fast 14mm f/1.8 or 20mm f/1.4 lens with RF ND adapter in s35 mode 👌) Record button in photo mode can trigger custom mode (R6 goes into a weird full auto mode; very dumb) 8K can actually be pretty useful in certain scenarios 4KLQ > 1080 from R6 4K120p while not oversampled looks fantastic in my opinion (I can't ever go back to 2K120p I'm spoiled) I would love a RP sized RF camera that shoots FF 4K 24p in CLOG and more affordable f/1.8 primes as a hand-off camera, B, C camera.

    R5 vs R6

I'd assume so but who knows with goofy Canon. Regardless the (10-bit) oversampled 4K is what I'm after in the R6.. By the way, here is a review that sorta made me consider the R6:

  25. Here is a diagram I worked out for the X-T3: This is what I found inside my Vello remote for X-T3. I attached external wiring to 2 & 3 for remotely firing off frames when digitizing my Arri II 35mm timelapse footage, a frame at a time run by a geared down motor. The X-T3 results are excellent. My major project at the moment.
