  1. Recently I've been playing around with modifying a sub-$100 action camera, and have been having more fun than I have in a long time. What is the most fun piece of equipment or rig that you have had, or used? Why? What made it fun? Post some pictures! Here's my "cinematic beast" with a few M12 lenses in front of the GH5 for scale: and here's the most recent video I shot with it: Shooting with this thing is so much fun because no-one takes a camera the size of a box of matches seriously, and assumes that the lens is really wide (it's about a 60mm equivalent FOV so it's really not that wide) and the only controls you get are on/off, record/stop, and where you aim it. What has put a smile on your face?

  2. Love it. Awesome poetic image, Kye! Thanks for posting. My favorite was the Lumix G6 with a Tokina 25-50mm F4 or the awesome Fujinon 12.5mm 1.7, which was recommended to me by our friend mercer. Using it on the G6 in 2x Digizoom or on the GX85 in 4K with its crop gives me an extremely satisfying personal image!

  3. Holy. Moly. Honestly, it's ABOUT FRIGGIN TIME one of these companies took mirrorless form factor videos 100% seriously. The Sigma FP was the closest, but obviously had a lot of issues. C70 was close, but still big for a small b-cam/gimbal cam. S1H was close, but still a hybrid. A7sIII, same - has video limitations. This could be the all-in video mirrorless though. But that will depend on a few things: does it have timecode, some audio solutions, shutter angle, and (most importantly) INTERNAL electronic ND FILTER!!! That last one is the kicker. I've always bashed Sony for their colors and thin IQ, but the FX9 and FX6 definitely seem to be going in the right direction, so one of those cameras plus this as a b-cam could be a killer combo.

    R5 vs R6

@plucas: I found an easier method: hit info in AWB settings and switch from default ambient to white priority mode. this eliminates the warm tint under tungsten lighting. I picked up an R6 by the way, and so far so good! really impressed by the IQ.

  6. Have you got 'Continuous AF' enabled for video (this is separate from the stills AF setting) ? - see the 'Using AF (Video)' section in the S5 User Guide - it's on page 256 in the pdf I have.

No to an internal SSD also but a MASSIVE yes to an electronic variable ND. Next best option would be a drop in solution between the lens and body. I wish there was an option for my S5 for this as I need both a VND and to retain a lens hood so have glued a slimmer aftermarket hood to my variable ND so I rotate that instead/at the same time.

  8. Hmmm... on my S1, if I pick any other white balance BESIDES AWB, then it will show the white balance in the upper left hand corner of the LCD (just to the left of the picture profile icon). If I choose AWB (auto white balance), then it does not display ANY icon for white balance. Also, you can toggle through different screens on the LCD by clicking the Display button. I think I realized that early on, and then forgot about it.

  9. I was thinking of a constant correction that you could just apply to all clips and forget about it. For my GH5 I use a lut I made that mimics Portra 400 film. It works fine on the S1 too as long as the input is V-Log V-gamut in a Rec709 colour space. It's quite contrasty so the signal might need adjusting before the lut to bring the image within range (grading should be done on the VLog signal before the lut, not after). But skintones should be very nice: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WC3uiROs7-088UeBHwPpwPLQxsuzZPju/view?usp=sharing

  10. Here is a short video on how to "normalize" audio in Resolve. In regards to the breathing and noise, I would guess that there are filters that can reduce that in Resolve, plus you can use eq and compression functions. Here is a short primer. Perhaps someone here who is more knowledgeable in audio could chime in with other tips.

Lots of cool ideas there, but for video shooters, only having 512gb internal storage before off-loading would be a nightmare. Got to keep the card slots. In my opinion, they have to do a couple of BIG things. Those would be: - Internal eND - Be the first - Internal BM Raw or ProRes Raw - even if this was available out the USB-C to an external SSD (like the Sigma FP), that would be HUGE. Being able to bypass the Ninja V would be so great. Then also some : - PDAF - They have to do it at this point. Or figure out a way to make DfD/Contrast aas good as the competition. - 5.9k or 6k like the S1, S5, S1H would be fine, but they'll probably go for 8k. - Timecode - Get that Netflix appoval - 180-240fps in 4k - Just to beat the full-frame models Some other cool ideas would be to have a battery grip also have two mini XLRs, or have one mini XLR on the body. We'll seee.

  12. I'd argue that digital camera sales have not slowed down, and actually speeded up. And the reason is that this graph is not taking into account cellphone cameras, which for all intent and purposes *are* digital camera replacements. I'd even go so far as to predict that the decline in sales of non-cellphone digital cameras have a direct relationship with the increase in sales of cellphone digital cameras. Bottom line: That graph does not tell us much as it is imcomplete.

eND, GH5S or better lowlight, best IBIS, 10 bit 4k 50p and 6k 25p and Sony class AF. There's your winner *It goes without saying that there'd be no extra crop and all the other stuff we love.

  14. Yea like pixelpreaching notice, i plan to use my L lenses. if i buy 4k or have to buy metabones or new lenses. Eaven if left aside money for new lenses, dragging two complets od lenses 🙄 . I have some nice canon lenses like 35/1.4L mkI, 85/1.2L II, 200/2.8 L and one zoom 24-70/4 L with really good stabilisation. Also i have Leica summicron 50/2 with ef adapter , I sold my old 17-40L recently, and if take bmpcc 6k, i will only need one wide angle lens, and i am complet 😄 and offcourse, I really want to thanks all you people for helping me with advice... specialy @pixelpreaching for spending his time to write well elaborated post. For now i am closer to option buying Blackmagic 6k and keeping 5DIV. but still in big dilemma... (my head will explode... 🤯 )

  15. You should try shooting a roll of 35mm still. The skin tone, color, and look are you get from film are absolutely amazing. It just looks right. I would imagine the guys on that colorist forum are likely a lot of veteran colorists that most likely value work flow over everything. I know this dude grades a ton of stuff shot on 35mm. Beautiful work. https://www.company3.com/artists/stefan-sonnenfeld/

  16. Film being difficult to work with doesn't make it undesirable in terms of the final outcome. Of course it changes from film stock to film stock but traits of film are what good digital cameras do as well. This is of course talking about film that has been properly shot and developed. Natural and true to life colors with a pleasing skin tone. Pleasant motion cadence. A detailed image that doesn't look like its been digitally sharpened. Soft roll off into highlights and shadows. Digital is still a relatively new medium and Arri is the only company to really have it down to perfection or at least very close to it. Weird motion, jello shutter, sharpening, moire, aliasing, aberrations, poor or odd color science, digital clipping, digital noise, compression artifacts, poor color depth, line skipping, incamera noise reduction, are all things brought into being by digital cameras.

  17. R5 is gimped and won't get through a shoot, and the Pocket 6K is overrated - sure the image is quite nice - erm that's about it. It's a dog to use unless you intend to rig it up and then you will have to think about weight, accessories, reliability, lack of IBIS, lack of EVF, etc. I would consider putting your Canon lenses on something else. How about Sony A7S III with Sigma MC-11 adapter?

  18. This guy didn't really do it in post, but I didn't want to create another thread. First time ever I've seen someone trying to actually recreate what Pro Mist filters are about. And he did it with a spray paint, lol. Side note: I knew Sony give yellowish skin tones, but I didn't expect a Simpson-ish jaundice.
