  1. Andrew is so right about this camera. When I saw the release I was like...OK so this is a worst A7SIII for $400 more with a XLR top handle but all the important cinema features are missing: No internal ND No XLR on body No audio controls on body Same shitty LCD screen without an EVF to save it No SDI They didn't even include a way to secure the HDMI PORT! LOL! Cinema camera my ass!

  2. I believe part of Panasonics woes is this exact problem. The Sony juggernaut marketing machine is now eroding the classic word of mouth professional back-channel chatter. At the tip of Sony's Marketing spear is YouTube.

  3. There will be several major firmware updates for FX3 to differentiate it from A7S III. They are not made available at launch partly because Sony do not intend to cut into A7S III sales too much.

  5. Why I rarely watch YouTube pieces such as the one linked above. It tells me little and it's primary purpose is to sell the camera for the manufacturer, and increase subscribers and viewers for the vlogger. Even the useful ones that tell me something tend to make me cringe with their same 'what's up Guys' style.

  6. Yes, and they sent him a bunch of swag in a pelican case to "sweeten" the review. How is that not payment? They have to disclose that Sony didn't sponsor them or have control over the review in anyway, yet they send him all this crap as an implicit: "look at what you won't get if we don't like your review". Everybody knows if piss these companies off they won't include you in their YouTube marketing and you won't get free shit.

  7. I'm concerned that four methods of showing you its in record just isn't enough. So I'll be waiting until SmallRig or Tilta release their Marine Flare Launcher cage add on for it just to be on the safe side.

  8. It's a complete game changer. Red box round the screen. Red line on the back. Red tally light on the top. But because this isn't noticable enough, the record button is illuminated!

  9. That's 4 I count! (screen as well) Clearly sets it apart from all other cameras.

  11. Really Panasonic is so frustrating. They would have fixed the shitty AF and makes real marketing strategies, they would own the video mirrorless market right now. But they don't want to change their DFD focusing tech and they are so lame at marketing themselves and their products. My S1H was a true workhorse and so close to a perfect camera. But I really felt the need for a reliable AF even though I am used to manual focus. it just makes life easier now that I switched to Sony a7SIII. Panasonic should really wake up.

  12. They are lifestyle channels now. I swear all of Matti's camera "reviews" are the same video. They all follow a script and marketing material with nothing added except their lifestyle stuff. Yes, Gerald at least is still releasing quality information about products without unnecessary hype, most of the time.

  15. Good to hear Stef. It seems Sony held back on some cine features we were all expecting on this FX3, probably to not cannibalise A7S3 too much. The S-Cinetone firmware "leak" for A7S3 seems to confirm this strategy. Typical from Sony, I just find it a little too sneaky..

  16. Yeah, I'm over Matti and Peter and that whole crew of YouTube influencers with their increasingly worthless camera "reviews" and their endless blogs about their hipster lifestyles. Back in the day they actually posted useful videos about shooting and editing techniques, plus their shtick was new and interesting at that point and not totally played out. 0f course, I've come to learn that some of their tips, like how to conform 60p footage to a 23.976 timeline were ass backwards and causing problems with a proxy workflow. Gerald Undone, on the hand, is still pretty good on his reviews. I did watch his review of the FX3, and it's pretty spot on. It hits a lot of the same points as folks on this thread have brought up, including that the biggest real differences between in at the A7SIII are the tally lights, lack of viewfinder, button changeups and the handle with integrated XLR module. He makes a great point that if you are a video first shooter who doesn't really care about the EVF and does care about XLR mics, than the FX3 is a bit cheaper than the SIII and an XLR module. Other than that, it's pretty much the same princess in a different dress.

  17. How would you ever stabilise in post without crop? This basically has the SteadXP built in. Something all camera's could do with, and Blackmagic previously suggested would come for their cameras, but so far never has. Maybe now it'll start to become a standard.

  18. What annoys me the most is how some youtbers in those reviews are already saying how this camera is the best mirrorless option for serious filmmaking. Cinema camera my ass ! The S1H is still the king of professional video centric mirrorless ! It has everything that this Sony FX3 doesn't have as a proper cinema camera : - 4K DCI (even 6K) - Anamorphic modes - Shutter angle - Synchro Scan - Possibility to import Luts in camera - waveform, etc. How those "reviewers" could forget how much the S1H is more suited to professional video shootings than this FX3 !

  19. According to Gerald the active cooling doesn't compromise the sealing. Personally I'd pick the FX3 over the A7S3. $400 isn't that much extra for all the ergonomic enhancements, active cooling & top handle. Still a lazy dick move from Sony, spitting all over those who just forked out for A7S3.

  20. I’ll start. The first thing to say is that I am extremely fortunate insofar as the pandemic has (with the exception of not being able to head north for the winter) been extremely positive. Working for a University the move to deliver lectures and other meetings online has been so much fun. An opportunity to build a green screen “studio” (around an Atem mini) and “play” with different techniques for online delivery. Everyone else in the institution has been screen sharing in Teams/Zoom - but it’s so easy with a little investment of time and money to dramatically improve on that. Last week I discovered the Aida HD100A - so much more convenient to use than the P4k and the reduction in quality won’t be noticed. And since a Video Assist is doing the recording (HDMI output from Atem) the simple Aida is perfect. Simple things like “top and tail” a video - adding a title sequence and some simple credits is a huge improvement over the usual first few seconds watching the lecturer fiddle around and settle. But... I am aware that not many will have been so fortunate. Yes, I need to get out more (I need to get to a post office!) but life at home has overall been positive. ”Filmmaking” has “saved” the work I do. Without being able to produce short films and negotiate live video sessions life would have been miserable. But that’s easy to say when ones income is not directly linked to the ability to create short films. That’s my perspective.

  21. So basically a rehoused A7SIII with tally lamps, active cooling, a top handle and S-Cinetone (which is coming to A7SIII in the next firmware). Such a lazy move from Sony and honestly not worthy of the "FX" moniker. That said, for $400 extra it kind of makes the A7SIII obsolete already no? I'd be heated (no pun intended) if I just got one. See ya in couple months for the FX4.

  22. Welp, it's a very sexy design with Sigma FP vibes, but I'm really surprised it does not have true 24P and shutter angle control at minimum. It does not seem like it's truly compatible right now as a B or C cam with another Sony Cinema cam. And of course I was hoping they would add TC in. I do think there is bandwidth for further features to be added due to the active cooling. So maybe that is Sony's play here, and we will see some divergence from the a7sIII in the future. But we'll have to see. At this point I would definitely still look at the FX6 over this camera though.

  23. So this is the CINEMA camera we've all waited for ! Shutter angle, 4K DCI, timecode, anamorphic modes, synchro scan, who cares about those shitty features when we have 18 tally lights around the body and that incredible grey color reminiscent of the Sony cinema line ! Oh and it says Cinema Line on the body itself, this is a testimony that this camera can actually be used to shoot real cinematic movies ! Waiting for the Netflix approval now ! Oh dear marketing people are well paid I hope. This camera is total BS.

  25. I've had a bunch of fun with 35mm film camera bodies, a few rolls of film and my existing lens collection. Started with Olympus OM bodies that I used my manual focus Zuiko's on. Also shot a bunch on Canon EOS bodies with EF lenses. This is autofocus, auto everything, if you want it. Everyone has a Canon lens lying around, right? Give it a go! It's loads of fun. You can still get a crappy Canon for almost nothing. Check out the specs at: https://global.canon/en/c-museum/product_search_result.html?t=camera&s=film&s2=eos&a=E&sort=new

    Filters?

Of those, Digital Diffusion FX is what I would recommend. Some of the black diffusion filters are nice, too, they lower the contrast less than the regular variants.

    Panasonic GH6

My first post here. Wanted to thank you all for keeping this site active and interesting! It's been a great source of information and inspiration for me. Hopefully, I'll also be able contribute to this avid community. I've been using Panasonic since 2017 (G85 at first and now G9), thus the possible future release of GH6 interests me also. A lot of wishes regarding the GH6 have already been mentioned. Nevertheless, with the announcement of BMPCC 6K Pro, I remembered that one of my wishes with the advent of HDR video recording has been the availability of HDR screen on camera. I shoot all videos in HLG mode with intent to deliver the final product in both HDR (HLG and/or HDR10) and SDR. Therefore my wish or expectation for GH6 would also be the implementation of HDR monitor. With 500 nits being the bare minimum and 1000 nits possibly being the sweet spot. Yes, I understand that it would impact the battery life. But the prospect of being able to properly expose the HDR footage would out-weight the necessity for a spare battery, at least for me. Sure, I use HLG View Assist (mode 2 mostly) at the moment, but it's not a match for proper in-built HDR monitor. For this reason, a larger monitor (4" plus) would be a welcome addition also. Altogether, HDR monitor together with built in ND filters (preferably up to 10 stops), internal 6K or even 8K (if the files are not a behemoth size) in future GH6 would spark my interest to consider it as a next upgrade. Let's see what the future brings.

    Filters?

Contrast filters lift the black levels across the frame, resolution filters have a small-radius bloom or simply reduce the sharpness of the image without reducing the contrast, halation is a wider-radius bloom that reduces contrast locally but doesn't necessarily wash out the entire frame. Reference the chart on the Scatter webpage. I imagine Ultra Contrast would look like somewhat like a light gray solid if it were on that chart.

  31. Mostly weight constraints, camera is about 400 grams. With the little crane m2 gimbal. It maxes out at 720 grams or so. Which allows me 310 grams or slightly more for a lens. The flip side is being mft the olympus lens should work on the p4k as well. I did try some laowa rectilinear lenses in store however the weight was a deal breaker for me at this point.

    Filters?

Other than polarisation filter, all filter effects can be precisely emulated digitally in post. This allows for much greater and finessed control and guarantees glare-free.

  33. Some of us really like that camera Shot in its sweet spot, that sensor cranks out gorgeous pictures with very little fuss. Think of it as digital slide film. http://www.bmcuser.com/forum/blackmagic-camera/general-discussion/17753-no-more-love-for-the-4k?17318-No-more-love-for-the-4K=

    Next lens purchase?

Get the Panasonic 25mm f1.7, is dirt cheap, is substantially faster than your f2.8 zoom while not losing too much light vs a f1.2 and the savings could easily afford for you to get a Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 as well!

  35. My business is weddings. Destinations weddings as in I live in France and they come to France for their wedding. Last year, actual work, I did 4%. That figure is based on me doing 5% of what was booked and losses that make up another 1% from what I did not book for last year, during last year, because there was no last year. Other than the 1 job I did, ie, 1/20 when it should have been 25/25. After some state assistance, my income ended up being around 30% of what it would normally be. I also took out the maximum allowed state backed loan which for me was 9k. I cannot borrow any more and technically, my business is now 9k in the red. 2021 should have been a 'claw some of it back year' but now is at least a "50% at best" year re. bookings & turnover. Worst case, 2021 is going to be a zero work year and realistically, it's going to be somewhere between 0-50% work. I think it will end up somewhere between the 2 figures and be a workload of between 20-25% of what it should have been. It depends on 3 factors: 1: The UK gov being correct and not backtracking on their 'everyone is free' from the 21st June. 2: France agreeing with them. Ha, miles...kilometres behind...if the UK really is that far ahead. 3: Travel. By July, folks in the UK may be able to do as they wish and us in France also, but we may (probably will) still have a travel issue that prevents couples from either going through with their weddings here, or deciding within the next month or so, it's too big a hassle for them and their guests and pulling the plug. I have already lost approx 1/3rd of all this year's booked work through postponement to 2022 or outright cancellation. I lost 2 more just today and expect all with dates prior to the end of June to go with a certainty (had 10, 4 remain) and at least 50% of the rest of the season which is July-early Oct. Bookings for 2022 are quite strong but by my calculations, to claw back the losses of 2020 will take 4 years running at 120% turnover, ie, 5 years total to be back where I was at the end of 2019 financially. Based on the fact that 2021 is pretty fucked already and is going to end up I'm projecting at 20-25%, at least another 3 years at 120% turnover...if that is even possible, making a grand total of: 2 'lost' years + 7 'trying to make it up' years...if it's even possible, for a total of 9 years to be back where I was at the end of 2019. Or after our daughter finished school and hopefully goes to uni 1 year this September, we sell our house and downsize to something smaller and cheaper and bypass having to even attempt 7 years of recovery, which realistically would be very hard to achieve anyway. Longer term, has it damaged the industry? Not really. A least not as far as I can tell. I'm not seeing any great rush to elopements even though social media is constantly chittering about it. Folks seem to be booking exactly what they would in any given year, but just asking hard questions about Covid policy for the future. Mentally, it's not great. I'm not depressed. Just frustrated for want of a better term. Massively frustrated. Having very little money to do anything...not that there is anything to really do anyway, but going into debt when after a lifetime of trying, we had just cleared it at the end of 2019. Seriously, - no mortgage, no car finance, no credit cards, no nothing. For the first time in 25+ years of adult life. I had some funds banked from previous gear sales so have spent some of that on some kit as I'm still doing some very low rate commercial work and freebies plus a few personal projects to stop myself from getting too rusty, but otherwise, we are spending very little. Perhaps the hardest part of it is having zero control or even ability to do anything that constitutes 'having a life' according to how I wish to live mine. Pretty much just existing and waiting...
