  1. I wonder it what possible universe being asked to reduce social contact and to take simple precautions like wearing a mask in enclosed spaces, during a pandemic that has so far killed half a million Americans (and many more the world over) can be characterised as 'slavery'. I mean, it's not like there's any shortage of examples of *actual* slavery available to see in the historical record of the good ol' USA.

  2. Personally don’t mind staying a bit behind the curve. I picked up a Fuji XT3 with the f2.8-4 kit last year and still love shooting with it. Fuji updated the AF to give us eye af tracking in video. The colors are worlds better than I was personally able to get when I had the Sony a6500. Hoping to pick up a cheap viltrox af lens soon for it as well. All this to say, no shame in going behind the latest!

  3. Surprised there's not chatter about this here. Anyone know how it gets around those transmission and recording patents? https://www.rode.com/microphones/wireless/wirelessgoii I also can't find exact details on recorded audio formats etc.

    R5 vs R6

I find quite noisy to be honest the RF 35 AF motor... also AF is not the fastest in town..... image quality is good and size and price great. I hope that they will cone out with a 24mm version. As a compact travel 24mm plus 50mm 1.8 would be great. RF 35 1.8 screen grabs from 8k RAW:

The RF 35 lives on my R6 (as the EF adapter is back-ordered due to the Canon factory fire). I've come to really appreciate this lens as it is quite compact, versatile, sharp, aberration free and has macro & IS. For the price it's killer, I like it so much I'm thinking of adding the RF 85 1.8 Macro IS.

  6. The 20-60 is a gem. OK, it doesn’t have the uber shallow DOF that say an f2 or faster does, but compared with an f2.8...at the wider end at least, there is not that much difference. In lower light at the longer end, 60mm f5.6 vs 70mm f2.8 it’s a lot more noticeable. But in decent light and/or at the wider end, it’s a great bit of kit for the price. I’d have both!

    R5 vs R6

Long time no post. I've been riding this one out. After some comparative testing I'm leaning towards the R6 as an upgrade to my sold EOS R. Why? First the obvious, it's 2K cheaper and I can't really justify the R5 at this point in time. Second, after some testing the R6 4K (supersampled from 5.5K) footage really isn't that much worse than R5 4K HQ and is much better than R5 4K LQ. Third, I don't need 8K or Raw. Too heavy files, too much editing processing power needed. Fourth, although 45MP could be useful, 20MP will do just fine. The only real downside I see for my needs is the poor RS and a warmer yellow tint on the R6. Anyone else agree/disagree? Oh and yes I know about the overheating & the A7S3 😅

  8. My 20-60mm is gathering dust after using it once while I waited for the EF adapter. It was just too slow for me on the long end. If I ever switch to L mount lenses the 20mm end might be interested as long as its daylight. I thought the exact same thing when I read it. I really like 24mm on the wide end and I also really like F1.4 when there is no light or I'm shooting detail shots; so this lens is interesting but falls right outside of what I need both in speed and in FOV. Right now my favorite 3 lenses on my S5 are the Canon EF 24mm F2.8, the Canon 24-105mm F4.0 L, and the Sigma EF 50mm F1.4 prime. A lens like this almost replaces all of them....but falls short of each of them in some way. Now a 24-105mm F1.4 would absolutely replace all of them (I'd even take a 24-70 F2.0)....but it would then be way too big and heavy for gimbal work so back to square one.

The 70-200 2.8 RF is very smooth, silent and fast compared to the RF 35 1.8 so not sure you can generalize.

  10. It seems very snazzy to be honest. All these points are in the video below, but here's what I like and don't like: It records on a loop, so if you don't backup the recordings, they get written over once you run out of internal memory. If you record uncompressed internal, you can then get a 32-bit float file off the transmitter. No need for -20db safety track If you record in Sum to Mono mode, the internal recording has a -20db safety track If you experience any audio dropouts to the receiver, the internal recordings will have a marker at those points. You can add markers manually with a single tap on the receivers power button Update in the works for gen1 transmitter to work with gen2 reciever

STM is much quieter and faster than adapted USM lens but there is an external moving element so if you're planning on using a shotgun mic, it could still pick up movement during fast focus shifts in a quiet environment.

  12. Fuji XT3 is awesome for around $800 used. The 10 bit H265 codec sucks if you don't have the right computer. Though you can record in 2k or HD to ease that. Of course there is the option for H264 8 bit. The GH5 is great especially with a speed booster. Can't beat its HD and of course the 4k is great.

  13. The D850 is a decent enough camera for filming with (especially for your purposes from the sounds of it, a D850 might even be called "overkill"), it is a camera many of us would have killed for only a handful of years ago. Rather than buying a secondhand Panasonic GH5, put that money into buying a Sound Devices MixPre3 & SmallHD Focus.

  14. I've returned to older cameras. I don't need 4k for personal projects and don't really think it looks better, either. I've always liked the image from both the C100 and GH5. I think V Log has +4 stops of highlight detail above 18% gray and Canon Log has 5.3 but then the shadows get a bit muddy and you have to watch your 100+ IRE super whites and recover them in post. With an external recorder, the C100's image I think is really great. But it does fall apart bit with macro blocking on leaves and flat surfaces, so I wouldn't use it for green screening necessarily. The Mk II might be better. But after going through a bunch of newer cameras I also found the older stuff familiar and lighter in post, which I appreciate.

    R5 vs R6

Putting the R6 through its paces during winter school break. Shot in 8-bit standard profile using a mix of 4K & (100FPS) FHD on a 2K timeline. Various AF modes were put to use (Face Priority, Face & Object tracking). Camera was set to Auto-ISO. Overall I'm pretty happy with this camera, given the sub $2.5K pricing. No fancy features just solid IQ, AF & IBIS. Zero overheat even at the beach today with 20 celsius. Of course I will keep testing but my confidence with Canon is somewhat restored, I will probably go with a C70 down the line for more pro work.

  16. Well that's the FX6, I don't think anyone expects a shrunken FX6 that undercuts its price by that much. Though I think they could have pushed the price point a higher and included all that. IMO that's the problem with the rumor mill, it creates crazy expectations with all the bullshit, and then things come crashing down with actual specs or prices. Cheers Chris

  17. Andrew is so right about this camera. When I saw the release I was like...OK so this is a worst A7SIII for $400 more with a XLR top handle but all the important cinema features are missing: No internal ND No XLR on body No audio controls on body Same shitty LCD screen without an EVF to save it No SDI They didn't even include a way to secure the HDMI PORT! LOL! Cinema camera my ass!

  19. Ugh, the X-T3 and 4 have a nasty artificial and plastic looking image with strong temporal filtering on top of the excessive sharpening which gets thrown on the footage even when it's set to -4. Even the A7s3 performs better in that regard. Really no comparison to the S1H with NR set to -1.

    R5 vs R6

I have the R5 and the 1Dx III but not the R6 but the 1Dx III being somewhat similar (probably the same) sensor I may help a bit. R5 FF 4k vs 1Dx III FF 4k is very similar as you say but the rolling shutter is a huge difference. R5 4k 120 is miles ahead of 1Dx III 1080 120….. not even fair. R5 4k LQ is miles ahead of 1Dx III 1080 On the processing of RAW vs. 10bit other than on an M1 or waiting on the new intel CPUs the RAW is way faster in Resolve PC. RAW is much faster. The problem for is mostly storage so it depends on your usage and archiving strategy. I would suggest downloading some files 10bit and RAW and compare on your machine. So far I never hit the recording limit of the R5 and I mostly shoot RAW or 4k 120. But here is cold and I do a lot of 1-2min max takes with breaks in between. Before I was turning the camera off between takes now I don’t bother anymore. But having say that not sure I would live with the R6 risk that I cannot shoot 4k…….. as I said 4k LQ is way better that full hd actually imo is a solid 4k…. R5 big plus: - Rolling shutter - RAW - very usable 120fps - Non overheating 4k modes FF and S35 R6 plus: - cheaper - 4k 60fps quality Are these worth 2k more? Only you can really answer this.

I'd assume so but who knows with goofy Canon. Regardless the (10-bit) oversampled 4K is what I'm after in the R6.. By the way, here is a review that sorta made me consider the R6:

  22. I thought we were talking about closing down businesses and lock downs and mandating stay at home policies - which I do consider a form of slavery. Who said anything about masks?

  23. My business is weddings. Destinations weddings as in I live in France and they come to France for their wedding. Last year, actual work, I did 4%. That figure is based on me doing 5% of what was booked and losses that make up another 1% from what I did not book for last year, during last year, because there was no last year. Other than the 1 job I did, ie, 1/20 when it should have been 25/25. After some state assistance, my income ended up being around 30% of what it would normally be. I also took out the maximum allowed state backed loan which for me was 9k. I cannot borrow any more and technically, my business is now 9k in the red. 2021 should have been a 'claw some of it back year' but now is at least a "50% at best" year re. bookings & turnover. Worst case, 2021 is going to be a zero work year and realistically, it's going to be somewhere between 0-50% work. I think it will end up somewhere between the 2 figures and be a workload of between 20-25% of what it should have been. It depends on 3 factors: 1: The UK gov being correct and not backtracking on their 'everyone is free' from the 21st June. 2: France agreeing with them. Ha, miles...kilometres behind...if the UK really is that far ahead. 3: Travel. By July, folks in the UK may be able to do as they wish and us in France also, but we may (probably will) still have a travel issue that prevents couples from either going through with their weddings here, or deciding within the next month or so, it's too big a hassle for them and their guests and pulling the plug. I have already lost approx 1/3rd of all this year's booked work through postponement to 2022 or outright cancellation. I lost 2 more just today and expect all with dates prior to the end of June to go with a certainty (had 10, 4 remain) and at least 50% of the rest of the season which is July-early Oct. Bookings for 2022 are quite strong but by my calculations, to claw back the losses of 2020 will take 4 years running at 120% turnover, ie, 5 years total to be back where I was at the end of 2019 financially. Based on the fact that 2021 is pretty fucked already and is going to end up I'm projecting at 20-25%, at least another 3 years at 120% turnover...if that is even possible, making a grand total of: 2 'lost' years + 7 'trying to make it up' years...if it's even possible, for a total of 9 years to be back where I was at the end of 2019. Or after our daughter finished school and hopefully goes to uni 1 year this September, we sell our house and downsize to something smaller and cheaper and bypass having to even attempt 7 years of recovery, which realistically would be very hard to achieve anyway. Longer term, has it damaged the industry? Not really. A least not as far as I can tell. I'm not seeing any great rush to elopements even though social media is constantly chittering about it. Folks seem to be booking exactly what they would in any given year, but just asking hard questions about Covid policy for the future. Mentally, it's not great. I'm not depressed. Just frustrated for want of a better term. Massively frustrated. Having very little money to do anything...not that there is anything to really do anyway, but going into debt when after a lifetime of trying, we had just cleared it at the end of 2019. Seriously, - no mortgage, no car finance, no credit cards, no nothing. For the first time in 25+ years of adult life. I had some funds banked from previous gear sales so have spent some of that on some kit as I'm still doing some very low rate commercial work and freebies plus a few personal projects to stop myself from getting too rusty, but otherwise, we are spending very little. Perhaps the hardest part of it is having zero control or even ability to do anything that constitutes 'having a life' according to how I wish to live mine. Pretty much just existing and waiting...

  24. 1,000/day relocating to Florida tells me that many are not embarrassed by Florida. I am saddened for the mental and emotional destructiveness the paranoia has caused. To me that's worse than the cause. Personally I would rather die free than survive as a slave. That's just me. I know many would disagree. Cheers.
