  1. For thoroughly tested LongGOP that maintains complete functionality with pristine imaging, I would highly recommend LPowell's FlowMotion v2. He really did top notch work there.

  2. This 100%! And the thing about those measures is they work! That's why I'm so exhausted by these debates. Even when you adjust the numbers to account for its small population, Vermont has the second lowest rates in the country. Why? It's not because it's rural since that didn't spare the Dakotas from having the highest numbers in the country. It's not because it was remote, given it bordered New York and Massachusetts, two states that were ravaged by COVID-19 at one point. It's not because they aren't testing; they're 7th in testing per million. It's because they require masks, put limits on how many people can be in stores and restaurants at once, restricted gatherings, etc. Common sense stuff that even after 500,000 have died people still argue against or call "slavery."

  3. Medically justified, temporary, standard public health measures aimed at containing a deadly pandemic are not slavery - the view of the world betrayed by such a characterisation is either simplistic or solipsistic. I'm very sorry for your father's suffering - but really, what is the alternative? Do hospitals allow normal visiting by relatives and friends who may unknowingly be spreading a virus that could kill not only the patient concerned but also many others in the hospital who are highly vulnerable? Or do they devote hours of scarce nursing time helping said visitors to don PPE to a clinical standard? All of the measures enacted around the world have their basis in the fact that we are faced with a virus that many can spread without even realising they're infected, but which for many others is a death sentence. In other words - they call upon those who in the main can withstand the infection to temporarily undergo some personal detriment - be it economic, social, emotional or to their own mental health in order to protect their fellow citizens who might not be so lucky. You say it's your right to take the personal risk of getting sick or dying. But what of the health worker treating you who you infect and goes on to die, or to have their life blighted by long Covid? What of the rights of the key worker infected because they have no choice but to continue to work and mix who is denied a hospital bed because you - who was exercising his rights - have taken it up due to entirely avoidable infection? Why do your 'rights' (really just a conviction that you shouldn't be inconvenienced or disappointed along with everybody else) trump theirs?

  6. Simply, I don't agree with the sentiment. It's equating the pandemic response to being unjustly subjugated. So, yeah, I don't see the response as being unjust like slavery. If there was supposed to be more nuance in the initial metaphor, I didn't read it.

  7. So I'm wondering if you can help me here. The OP asked how we were all fairing. I understood it to mean that some were having a very difficult time. Some not as much. So let's hear about how everyone's doing. That's what I thought I understood. It was an honest question. At least I thought. So I responded that here in Florida we have been basically open since May, that I know people who were diagnosed with covid, but I don't personally know anyone who has died. All true. Also, my greatest impact from covid was on my dad, who fell in July and suffered severe brain damage that was made enormously worse by the covid rules in California hospitals which didn't allow anyone to see him. This made his recovery nearly impossible because, if you've ever known anyone who has experienced tremendous brain trauma, surrounding them with familiar faces and places is critical to help them stay grounded and to recall familiar things. He also has tremendous ptsd from staying in a hospital for 2 months alone. It's been devastating to us and him and he is still not close to recovering from either the fall or the hospital stay. I was then told Florida was an embarrassment. Well, a statistic I heard a month ago said that 1,000 people/day are moving here. Clearly not everyone is embarrassed by Florida. Is this offensive? Inappropriate? Whether or not you agree, isn't this in line with the OP's original question? How are we all fairing and who's doing what? Then I empathized with those who have been negatively affected by the paranoia, as opposed to the disease itself -- like my family. I literally don't know a single person who has died from covid, but the fear of it destroyed my dad's chances of recovery. Is that offensive? Inappropriate? Again, isn't this a relevant addition to the conversation? I haven't suggested new policy. Only expressed my experiences. I then mentioned how I would prefer to die free, than live as a slave. Is this such an offensive sentiment? Maybe the word "slave" is touchy? If so, I apologize. I didn't mean it in with any of the historical stigma. I delivered to a lady a couple months ago who hadn't been outside since March 2020. I couldn't do that. In other words, to hell with the paranoia, I would rather die free than be enslaved to my house. Said differently, I would rather live and risk dying, than survive and risk never living. As I said before, and politely I might add, that's me. Not everyone will agree. Then I was accused of not wearing a mask and not social distancing. Listen, I wear a mask every time I'm out in public and keep my distance. Not for my sake, but for those who are concerned. Isn't this what has been asked of us? Was the only acceptable answer how miserable I am and it's all so and so's fault? If so, I can't answer that way. Over here in my circle of family and friends we are happy and healthy and working and free and the most devastating experience from covid was the fear, not the virus itself. I meant no disrespect to those that have lost friends and family. And if you are in favor of locking everyone in, well, I disagree, but I respect your opinion. I'm simply offering mine. Again, I thought we were supposed to express our experiences thus far. Those are mine. Maybe this forum isn't for honest answers. Change my mind.

I find quite noisy to be honest the RF 35 AF motor... also AF is not the fastest in town..... image quality is good and size and price great. I hope that they will cone out with a 24mm version. As a compact travel 24mm plus 50mm 1.8 would be great. RF 35 1.8 screen grabs from 8k RAW:

  9. Take a swig every time Hugh says "compelling". Joking, I like the fella and his channel and I watched this last night and didn't notice if he used the word at all. I know some have mentioned the relatively 'low res' viewfinder, but if this thing just had decent AF, it would be 10x more popular and kill everything else at it's price point. It's compelling enough for me anyway and I'd be intrigued how good (or bad) this lens is with the S5 because for the best result so far (with any Panny), it needs native. I think I'd at least give it a chance over the 24-105 on it's way to me other than for the fact it's a bit short for my needs and I'd need another lens to go with it...and swapping...and needing at the same time and...there's always a compromise somewhere.

  10. Personally don’t mind staying a bit behind the curve. I picked up a Fuji XT3 with the f2.8-4 kit last year and still love shooting with it. Fuji updated the AF to give us eye af tracking in video. The colors are worlds better than I was personally able to get when I had the Sony a6500. Hoping to pick up a cheap viltrox af lens soon for it as well. All this to say, no shame in going behind the latest!

  11. What annoys me the most is how some youtbers in those reviews are already saying how this camera is the best mirrorless option for serious filmmaking. Cinema camera my ass ! The S1H is still the king of professional video centric mirrorless ! It has everything that this Sony FX3 doesn't have as a proper cinema camera : - 4K DCI (even 6K) - Anamorphic modes - Shutter angle - Synchro Scan - Possibility to import Luts in camera - waveform, etc. How those "reviewers" could forget how much the S1H is more suited to professional video shootings than this FX3 !

  13. My thinking is to add one of the cameras I’m considering as a primary, with my 850 and LX100 as potential b-cams or backups for now, or renting a second cam as needed. This would evolve with time. I’ve picked up some bargain second hand kino-type lights (Lowel) and have a couple LED ac/dc monolights with modifiers. Audio of course is significant too. I got into sound-for-picture before video though, and I have some good kit already.

    Panasonic GH6

While nothing specific on the GH6 other than they are still considering it, Panasonic did mention a new prime and “revolutionary” zoom are coming. My guess is that the zoom would be designed for video similar to the 10-25. https://www.43rumors.com/great-news-panasonic-says-new-revolutionary-mft-zoom-and-new-mft-fast-primes-are-in-the-works-along-the-gh6/

  15. Last year I filmed a corporate event where people spoke for two days in front of an 30m long wall made up of joined LED screens. This looked great to the audience but I had terrible problems with moiré. Some angles were simply impossible and the camera needed to be locked off on a tripod to minimise the problem. Spontaneous shooting was almost impossible. It was very stressful, especially because I'd been flown half way around the world to do it and didn't want to let my client down. I'm going to cover the same event this year and, apparently, the same screen technology will be used. So my questions are : (1) Is there any solution to this problem or do I have to live with it? (2) Does the choice of camera / sensor technology play a role? (3) Is there any on lens filtration that might help? (4) Am I right in thinking that the only real solution would be to cover the screens with an anti-moiré diffusion screen? My research suggests that the real problem is that the screen used wasn't really appropriate for being filmed. Thanks in advance!

  16. Nope! But it's just the facts: Better range with the Sony Better ergo design with the Sony More features with the Sony When you really compare them head to head, it isn't even close, Sony comes out on top. I am a pro. And I'm saying, don't buy a new 416. If you're choosing on the basis of reliability, then you sure as hell don't choose a Sennheiser EW100 G3/G4. And those "rental houses", they're not specialist audio houses (their normal rental stock would more likely be Lectros), they're general photography/videography rental houses. (thus you should take their opinions on anything audio with a massive grain of salt! Or even better, keep the salt to yourself rather than waste it on their audio opinions. As keeping the salt would be worth more than what their opinions are)

  17. Absolutely. The new Sony FX series is going to be bought by people, and will prove to be popular as there are people out there who want them. The tv series I was working on today had the vast majority of the cameras being FX9 or FX6! (with a few other Sonys thrown in there, like the Sony F5) How many FX cameras in total? I didn't even try to count. But just in the sound department (and we're way in the minority compared to the size of the camera crew! Of course, as is always normal) we have five of us. And that's just on this one shoot.

In general I prefer the EF lens as the vND adapter is just too good to pass, plus you can buy some good ones "cheap" on the used market. I have the RF 35 1.8 (mostly for is compactness so I can keep it the jacket pocket) and the RF 70-200 2.8 (my EF 70-200 had an accident 😞 and the weight/size of the new one was too hard to pass), If the RF 70-200 F4 would have had a tripod collar would have been maybe even a better choice. I don't do stuff on sound sensitive places yet the RF 35 1.8 I find it a bit disturbing. I have these EFs and to me they seems all quite quiet in term of AF all USM: 16-35 2.8 II 24 1.4 II 50 1.2 24-70 2.8 II 200-400 4

  20. NO TIMECODE!!! There is exactly ZERO chance that this will get Netflix Approval in the current form. Timecode & eND alone make the FX6 worthwhile instead for any professional, at a cost of "only 50% more". That won't cut it at all for Netflix commissioned projects.

  22. Please watch this video from the D850 and then explain, in great detail, how this image isn't sufficient for your needs.... Here's the blog post outlining a bit about how it was shot (handheld with a 50mm lens): https://news.coreyrich.com/2017/08/latest-work-home-shot-d850/ Spend the money on yourself, lighting, audio, or lenses, but why upgrade?

  23. Huh, yeah interesting, I guess people have different tolerances. I often shoot in a sound-controlled environment so the AF noise is pretty important to me. Especially with smaller crews now, it's good to have another usable audio track from the camera. STMs aren't uniformly quiet. USMs are also not all the same. I have a 24 f2.8 IS USM that is much quieter than the 35 f2 IS USM or RF 50 1.2. The Nano USM models are all great, virtually undetectable. I just wish Canon would make fast primes w/ Nano USM. Anybody have experience with quiet, fast Sigmas?

Gonna be using it tomorrow for a livestreaming samoan/white wedding, there will be lots of performers for the reception from different families. Theoretically 20000mah 3.7v is around 4x more power than 2130mah 7.2v so if 4k last 1.5 hours on battery it should last 6 hours? (could be less due to conversion) I like the RF35 for stills, for video I use Sigma 35 1.4 with VND adapter, work really good. RF 85mm F2 IS is pretty good, I have it and love it! The macro make it a more versatile lens than normal 85mm lens.

I second this. I found the RF 50mm f/1.2 tempting, but after trying it I realized the focusing system was way too loud and the autofocus was quite jerky as well. I'm using an STM lens instead, and although it's not perfectly silent it's much more quiet and the focusing is smoother. It seems like the budget RF lenses are more suitable for video than the L RF glass.

  26. Looks pretty interesting, not to be negative but it would be even better if you could control when the recording starts/stops and/or if you could use sd/microsd. On a longer shoot day you'll need to lug around a computer to offload the files to make sure you have space for uncompressed recording. Other than the lack of locking 3.5mm it looks like really good for a small system. Still looking forward to the deity transceiver as that does TC, hopefully they've been working on adding 32bit float recording to it though, as it would suck if it was 24bit only.

  28. I work in tourism marketing in Florida, its been a rough year, lots of layoffs and visitation numbers collapsing for a good chunk of 2020. Lots of colleagues lots jobs as layoffs cut deep industry-wide. I've been fortunate to be at 2019 levels of income as there were needs for pandemic messaging and now slowly starting to welcome back visitors. Plus everyone is doubling down on local experiences, outdoor adventures and other social distance activities that can be safely done - so there's lots of content buckets to fill. Things are rebounding. I feel blessed to still be busy, but its been tough to create content with social distance measures, so lots of outdoor/drone stuff, I've been flying a lot. Its also been rough with all the negative attention FL generates. But vaccines are rolling out fast, so there's a light at the end of the tunnel. All signs point toward a busy summer, for better or worse. I did have some extra downtime so I made a point to exercise daily to burn stress, got faster on inline skates and on my paddleboard than ever before, and got into the best shape of my life. I think we all need something to keep us sane, I've had lots of friends/family get COVID despite most being very careful, and a few have died. Its been a rough year mentally just from the constant stress of everything. Chris

  29. I wonder it what possible universe being asked to reduce social contact and to take simple precautions like wearing a mask in enclosed spaces, during a pandemic that has so far killed half a million Americans (and many more the world over) can be characterised as 'slavery'. I mean, it's not like there's any shortage of examples of *actual* slavery available to see in the historical record of the good ol' USA.

  30. 1,000/day relocating to Florida tells me that many are not embarrassed by Florida. I am saddened for the mental and emotional destructiveness the paranoia has caused. To me that's worse than the cause. Personally I would rather die free than survive as a slave. That's just me. I know many would disagree. Cheers.

  34. Fuji XT3 is awesome for around $800 used. The 10 bit H265 codec sucks if you don't have the right computer. Though you can record in 2k or HD to ease that. Of course there is the option for H264 8 bit. The GH5 is great especially with a speed booster. Can't beat its HD and of course the 4k is great.

  35. The D850 is a decent enough camera for filming with (especially for your purposes from the sounds of it, a D850 might even be called "overkill"), it is a camera many of us would have killed for only a handful of years ago. Rather than buying a secondhand Panasonic GH5, put that money into buying a Sound Devices MixPre3 & SmallHD Focus.

  37. Probably not but I did some math(s) and worked out if I got one, I could work with 2 bodies instead of 3 as I normally/now used to. Most of the day (weddings), I only need 2 at most but there are a couple of critical times when as a prime user, I need multiple focal lengths and that is where this 24-105 is going to be used, - shooting either '36mm' or '157.5mm' in 4k 50p. I'm looking at it as reasonably fast twin prime lens but needing only one body. I might end up using it for more, maybe even all day but I'll have to test it. I've only got a couple of lenses right now but comparing the 20-60mm @ f3.5 to the 85mm @ f1.8 in low light, there's a huge difference. Obviously. Just over 2 stops between f1.8 and f4 and that's the difference between shooting 1600 or 6400. Again, obviously. But this little Sigma was on my radar and still might be an option paired with the 105mm f2.8 Depends on how the rest of this year goes as right now, I'm only spending based on minimal need and funds left over from previous kit sale.

  40. In my eyes, it is not even a contest, you get better range and more features with the Sonys. Meanwhile, the entry level G4 is a fairly non-existent "upgrade" from the previous older G3 (which itself was only a modest upgrade from the G2, adding in a fake form of "diversity"). Deity Connect Wireless is another worth considering in the sub $1K price category, but has its own set of pros/cons. If you want to roll the dice and go secondhand, then Lectro 200 series are a great sub $1K choice as well. No way in hell would I want my talent wireless to be in those frequencies! Far far too close to the mega wattage (I jest... they're not quite that) RTs that hundreds of people are using all around me on sets.

  43. The S1H still has the best image of any camera under $10k, in my opinion. And I've used a lot of them. They need to put out an EVA-2 and S2H (or S5H) asap with update AF and they'll be good. I will probably use Panasonic cameras in the future for IQ alone, but AF, 120fps 4k, and a few other of the new bells and whistles are very useful in cameras like the C70, FX6, and this FX3. I'm still not sure Sony has fixed their color and IQ issues fully and their WB seems to be way off - but I'd like to test. FX3 would be excellent if the A7sIII didn't exist, and frankly, the A7sIII shouldn't exist, not the other way around.

    Panasonic GH6

My first post here. Wanted to thank you all for keeping this site active and interesting! It's been a great source of information and inspiration for me. Hopefully, I'll also be able contribute to this avid community. I've been using Panasonic since 2017 (G85 at first and now G9), thus the possible future release of GH6 interests me also. A lot of wishes regarding the GH6 have already been mentioned. Nevertheless, with the announcement of BMPCC 6K Pro, I remembered that one of my wishes with the advent of HDR video recording has been the availability of HDR screen on camera. I shoot all videos in HLG mode with intent to deliver the final product in both HDR (HLG and/or HDR10) and SDR. Therefore my wish or expectation for GH6 would also be the implementation of HDR monitor. With 500 nits being the bare minimum and 1000 nits possibly being the sweet spot. Yes, I understand that it would impact the battery life. But the prospect of being able to properly expose the HDR footage would out-weight the necessity for a spare battery, at least for me. Sure, I use HLG View Assist (mode 2 mostly) at the moment, but it's not a match for proper in-built HDR monitor. For this reason, a larger monitor (4" plus) would be a welcome addition also. Altogether, HDR monitor together with built in ND filters (preferably up to 10 stops), internal 6K or even 8K (if the files are not a behemoth size) in future GH6 would spark my interest to consider it as a next upgrade. Let's see what the future brings.
