I have been messing around with mine today too and have been really enjoying it. The feel in the hand is superb, very ergonomic and access to NDs in body is bloody revelatory. The weight is really nice, it feels more solid than my 4k. The screen is really useable even in bright light, colour tint on screen seems ok too. No major colour shift noticed in the footage with ND up to the full 6 stops though no scientific testing done. All in all I am really happy with it. I put on the Canon 24mm f2.8 is lens, stuck in a Cfast and was able to fit it into a small shoulder bag and head out for the day with one spare battery. Everything I needed was in the camera, very liberating.3 points

My 1DC just bricked. Infamous error 80, then complete lockup. Sent to Canon and they are fixing for free under limited warranty! What a company! I miss it already and it’s only been gone 6 days! I don’t think I will ever sell it.2 points -

If someone hasn't left their house for nearly a year they've probably got issues that extend beyond the "paranoia hysteria" that came with the COVID-19 pandemic. No one has suggested you don't leave your house, they've suggested you wear a mask, wash your hands, and maintain a distance of 6 feet. Regardless, you live in a country where 26 people have died of COVID-19. We're in a country where over a half a million people have died of it. It's easy to sound off and claim its paranoia when you're a world away and haven't experienced it first hand.2 points -

I think it will be Panasonics only saving grace, that, and continuing to bring more cinema level features to smaller and more affordable cameras. S2H: "yeah we don't have good AF... but we got a new organic sensor with 18 stops dynamic range, built in eND, false color, and Varicam color science for $4K with a flip screen and tilt screen!2 points -

Keiji Oishi just said this in a DPR interview... “A flagship Nikon Z-series mirrorless camera can be expected within the year, and is being developed with the goal of surpassing the D6. It will respond to the advanced needs of professionals. The upcoming model will debut a newly developed high-resolution stacked CMOS sensor. While this camera will be a major technological leap for still photographers of a wide variety of genres, our engineers are considering powerful video features such as 8K that respond to the needs of all kinds of content creators and professionals.” “We consider 8K to be an important feature, in that the high resolution and high definition required in still photography is also important for video. It is likely that demand for high resolution and high definition will continue to expand, and especially considering that many of Nikon’s users are hybrid creators, it’s of utmost importance that the needs of videographers are met by offering attractive video features that push the boundary of what is possible.” https://www.eoshd.com/news/nikon-promise-8k-mirrorless-camera-within-a-year-close-in-spec-to-sony-a1/ Funny way to announce a flagship camera over Zoom to the press 🙂1 point -
Canon 1D X Mark III revisited

I decided to take another look at the Canon 1D X Mark III - giving it a second chance in the post EOS R5 and R6 world. New blog post: https://www.eoshd.com/news/canon-1d-x-mark-iii-revisited/1 point -
It's the best hybrid at its price point imo. A7S3 is awesome but it just won't cut it for stills for many or most. If Panasonic or Fuji's auto focus was up to par it would be a different story. Who would have thought Canon was offering the best specs at the lowest price point. If they allow clog2 or 3 in a firmware update it would really be great.1 point

The media you consume might be saying that but it doesn't match the reality that I live in every day. And people are going outside in nature. Last summer bikes were difficult to buy in stores because there was a rush of interest in biking and used bikes were selling for much higher prices than usual for the same reason. Here in Vermont it has been difficult to find snow shoes for the same reason. They've been telling people it's fine to do this since last spring.1 point -

Mark Romero 2 reacted to Robert Patts for a topic
I had the same problem when comparing the camera to my P4k. Even if sent at the exact white balance, the S5 had much different skin tones and had to have the tint/temp corrected. Which leads me to the conclusion of this camera (Compared to the P4K) S5 is a great camera that produces very sharp, clean images. Despite being shot in VLOG (With NR + Sharpness set to 0) and with a Contax Zeiss 28mm, I still had to add blur to the footage to soften it a bit. At high ISO the grain is very fine, and pleasing. In the right settings it can produce a great image (Which can be said about a most cameras). IBIS is a plus. Huge plus. The 10bit codec holds up well, and I have no problem applying a grade via Dehancer. The LongGOP codec is not fun to work with, but then again nothing will edit as smooth as Prores/Braw. So why did I return it. I feel something in the image is off. If you shoot a landscape / overview / nature, everything looks great. But as soon as you ad a person to the scene, something does not sit well. It is hard to explain. It has this look I am not a fan of, and I feel the motion is off. (I shoot at 25p and 180 shutter degree) Sunlight the camera is amazing. As are many. But as soon as you throw it in an uncontrolled light setting, it does retain the same nice look as the Blackmagic does. The footage in the right settings looks great. But requires more massaging to get the look I want color wise. In the end I will be sticking with my P4K and will go down in a blaze of unstable shaky footage.1 point -
Anyone test Canon R5 vs Canon 1DC?
Spaceghost1969 reacted to plucas for a topic
Every time I look at R5/R6 footage, it looks "different" to the 1DC. Perhaps the aim is no longer to replicate the rougher or "textured" look of analogue film to quite the same extent. I thought I read somewhere on these boards that the 1DC used an outmoded Rec601 colour space too?1 point -
And timecode! And waveforms! And TA3F with P48! And full size HDMI! (with an additional bonus mini SDI output?? Seriously, these heavily video focused cameras such as the S1H/GH5S/a7Smk3/etc should give us a second independent output. Then your on camera monitor could be log with info overlays, and the director etc can get a clean Rec709 feed)1 point

Canon 1D X Mark III revisited
IronFilm reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
I agree. I would say Sony has already met and in some cases exceeded Canon's DPAF. Sony now has 10-bit codecs with more refined colors and S-Cinetone for easy workflow and an army of YouTube influence peddlers. Canon still the only one offering internal RAW in mirrorless or DSLR form factor. It's not very compressed and hard to work with but its there and more accessible than anything from Sony. I think Canon R1 will set the tone for them going forward, or at least it should if they are smart. Sony is really killing it as far as technical specs are concerned...and its showing.1 point -
Nikon 8K mirrorless camera (Sony A1 clone)

Any camera manufacture beholden to buying Sony Semi. Conductors sensors are always fighting an up hill battle. You bet your ass Sony's contract around buying sensors from Sony Semi. Conductor is a good one. They always get the latest technology first. The last generation of cameras were all using the same sensors. A7III, S5, Z6, SL2, Z7, S1R, SL2. I'm sure I'm forgetting some too. It's all about how they are wrapped now and I'm afraid all these other camera manufactures are doomed If they can't come up with better wrapping (AF, ergos, colors, codecs, processing, internal RAW). Perhaps Nikon has an edge here with ProRes and BRAW. I just don't have much faith they can execute it well given their history. And Canon, is well Canon. But at least they have DSLRs and mirrorless with internal RAW, albeit not very compressed RAW.1 point -

There are definitely people who shoot with the likes of a FS7/FS5/FX6/EVA1/UMP/etc (what you'd call "a major equipment upgrade") who do the bulk of their bread and butter work shooting solo, and make a good living from it. But still.... you should at least be on the fringes of doing bigger crewed work, with a sizeable minority of your work of the scale that a gaffer / 1st AC / sound mixer / MUA / etc (perhaps not all four at once though, although even that still falls into the "very small crew" category) are being used as part of your work. And if not, do you really need that "upgrade"?1 point -

Yes it will have 8K because it will use the 50MP sensor on A1. It won't have A1 level AF but it will shoot 8K UHD 60P with 1:1 readout (slight crop).1 point -
Got my Pocket 6K Pro today. I took it out for a quick try at the grounds of a nearby University. Just some initial thoughts. It does look like my screen has a slight blue tint. I have not yet tried to upload any LUT, so can't confirm that yet. Just using it for basic shots, it's a welcome step up on the Pocket 4K. Tilt screen is very useful and I tried some low shots to make good use of it. It was a dull day, but its clear the screen is a lot clearer and brighter. I need a sunny day to really test it though. Battery life much better. Not as good as the GH5 I own of course, but much more usable than the P4K. Colour looked better but I need to edit the footage to make a proper judgement. No issues with the IS on my 24 to 105 lens as I had on the 4K with the metabones adaptor. However as the issue was intermittent, its hard to be sure. It was a cold day, so I would have normally have had issues and lots aperture control at some point. This didn't happen once. Some improvement in shallow depth of field from the slightly larger sensor. Nice look that I look forward to working with. It's bigger and heavier to hold, but I felt sturdier in my hands. It helped me to get more stable shots I felt. I will continue to take it out and even start editing the footage, so will have more thoughts on it as time goes on. However, I am very pleased with it so far.1 point

Canon 1D X Mark III revisited
Video Hummus reacted to SteveV4D for a topic
Canon have dropped the ball with their R5/R6 release. Neither were the camera many hoped for. I had hoped to add a R6 to my gear, but the release fell far short of even modest expectations. Overheating and rolling shutter plus other notable misses as well. Shame on Canon. Sony are pushing further than Canon in some areas, but Canon is in others, but for video, Sony is doing better IMO. And I say this as someone who has never enjoyed a single Sony camera I have owned and prefers Canon colours to Sony. Sony is narrowing the gap and I predict a day when Canon won't have the edge in AF and colour it once enjoyed. Unless Canon can stop limiting their cameras so drastically, they will continue to lose their market to Sony, as they have done already.1 point -
On another subject, holy crap, 6k 10 bit 4:2:2 internal all-I. How did I not know about this before?! How come so few are talking about it?! Well it’s not quite what it could be though I have just started a series of tests and it’s looking quite promising for certain use cases. First of all though, it’s not 6k, but 5.2k in a 3:2 crop. Great to the latter because I’d like to pull stills from it and 3:2 is best for me so box ticked. Also, the more pixels the better and 5200 long edge beats 4000. Another box ticked. Is it all-I though? Very difficult to find info, but I read that it is and something to do with the fact it’s always and only 30 fps. And that’s the next thing, 30 fps. Is that a good or bad thing? Most seem to want 24 or 25. I’d prefer 25 myself, but 50 would be better and you can get 50, but have to drop back to 4k. The real eye-opener for me was that it could be shot for 15 minutes and in vlog. I have only tested with Natural and Cinelike V so far so may test vlog but depends on whether the onboard LUT works with it or it’s a definite no no. No dealbreaker anyway as I prefer to work with a baked in look and minimal grading in post. I did some quick tests yesterday against FF 25p and APSC crop FF and it looked better. Harder to edit though as it does not run smoothly in Premiere, probably due to being 4:2:2 rather than 4:2:0? I am not the techiest of people but assume that is it? No dealbreaker here either as next year I am going only laptop and M1 chip thingy. The bottom line is I’m trying to discover whether an S1H will suit my needs (highest quality baked in video at a reasonable price that I can lift the best quality stills from) or whether the S5 is enough in either 4K 25p or 5.2k 30p. Yesterday I got quite close to Jpeg from raw quality in 4K 25p and 5.2k 30p with the still image being the best, the 5.2k second best and anything 4K third best with 4K 25p beating 4K 50p. Ie, as you would expect. The S1H I suspect at 5.4K 25p is not going to have much of an edge or even any noticeable difference over the S5 in ‘6k’ mode?1 point

Panasonic GH6
Video Hummus reacted to Jimmy G for a topic
Another wishlist item for GH6 (and future S-Series cameras) would be for "Proxy-to-SD/RAW-to-CFExpress" simultaneous recording (as already exists in the market), I'm a big stickler for no external recorders or other extraneous gear or boxes or wires or other tree-branch-snaggable doodads hanging off my camera adding weight and creating water-and-dust in-points when I'm out "bushwhacking it" for a birdie shot! [rant] I'm PO'ed beyond words that I have to purchase and deal-with an external recorder and all of the ridiculous (aforementioned) caveats, costs and constraints to get the most video "juice" out of my 2xS1's...an extra $1k+ in gear and inconvenience, weight and hazard just to record either 10-Bit 4:2:2 60P or ProRes Raw? Really? I'll pay the extra $1K if that's what it really should cost, just put it all in the d*** camera! The folks that still need to play with all of their needed external hookups can still carry on as before! 🙂 [end of rant] -Jim1 point -

One of the ugliest aspects of this pandemic has been the reminder of the sense of entitlement so many people have. It was always there but it's really been hitting us over the head every day since the pandemic began. Selfishness has been deemed "freedom" and any attempt to reel in such selfishness has been labeled "tyranny." It's to the point where people compare, without even the smallest bit of irony, that it's equal to slavery. Mind you they make these statements on their phones and computers, with minimal restrictions on what they can say (depending on the platform), while living in their nice homes, driving their nice cars, eating in restaurants, and enjoying most of the other wonderful perks that comes with modern technology and society. You know who don't have any of that? Actual slaves. And they exist today, not as these privileged people complaining, but as human beings forced to live in squalor, void of any rights, and forced to work for nothing. The minor inconveniences you've had to live with this last year is still better than anything those people have ever experienced. So yeah, people's insistence on comparing the efforts to combat COVID-19 to slavery is not only dumb but insulting to those that have experienced genuine slavery or whose ancestors were slaves. All of that should go without saying and yet here we are. Embarrassing.1 point -

Canon may be pumping out cameras and lenses at an insane rate and will continue to do so. And Sony even more. And Nikon ups their game next week. And Fuji next year and...on and on and on it goes. Simple bottom line is what do YOU need and what has anyone else got to offer that your current set up is not offering? By the sounds of it, you are looking at the cost of an S5 vs the cost the of a C70, albeit switching the roles of your cameras around a bit. Then let's say you get the C70 and S1H became your B cam, you'd tell yourself it would make more sense to swap the S1H for a Canon R6. And change all your glass. What do you NEED? Your needs will be different to mine as they will to the next person and so on, but for this kind of thing, I write a drop down list on the left side of the page in regards to my needs and then simply either put a check mark if I have that need covered or write in the potential options if I have not. Then I ask myself are the potential options actual quantifiable and justifiable needs, or just wants? Such as 4k 60p. Do you actually need it or is 1080 more than good enough? IBIS, need it or are you always on a tripod or gimbal because then it'e worthless. Autofocus. Need or not? 10 billion dot viewfinder when you only use the back of the screen? Sony A7Siii I am looking at you. I don't care what anyone else is doing. My neighbour has a Ferrari. I have a Skoda estate. Good luck sleeping in your Ferrari overnight in the mountains ready for an early morning shoot because I have one of the back seats down, a platform, an air mattress, a 4 season sleeping bag, pillow, plugin coolbox, gas cooker, table, chair... but the Ferrari can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds which is like 4k raw for an hour or something. Who gives a shit if you don't NEED it. Actually my neighbour has an SUV but for demonstration purposes 😉1 point -
