  1. Here's what I think we should do for the next one: - Large sensor challenge for under $150 (minimum size Micro Four Thirds) - Shoot the best possible looking PHOTOGRAPHY or video with it (I am personally happier just to shoot photos for some relaxed fun this time. Video more of a job in current covid infected world) - Use any existing lens you like, bonus points for unusual stuff - Must be new camera you don't already own and under $150 maximum (have fun searching) Winner is: - One who finds best bargain on eBay for under $150 with best image quality and ergonomics, the most interesting, or most imaginative choice - One who takes the best shot with it (just one amazing frame or moment wins it all)

  2. There is a little bit of that in me also. I will reward someone for a job well done just as much as I will walk away from someone/something that is taking the piss. I used Fuji for nearly a decade despite it falling short in many areas, because there was 'enough' for my needs and I also felt a certain brand loyalty because as camera companies go, they are one of the best. I haven't felt that with Panasonic. The tool does the job I want it to do, but their customer service in both the UK and EU has been, "we don't give a fuck". That has not endeared them to me. The deliberate and artificial over-heating shenanigans of Canon meant that despite their tool possibly being a very high contender for my needs, as a company they can go and do one. Just this morning, I had an issue with the particular theme of my Wordpress site. I'm not an especially (OK, not very at all) techy person and I needed some help from the theme developer. All I got back all morning was abrupt single line, condescending and somewhat cryptic, " we don't give a fuck" responses and they haven't even bothered to answer my last question. All of which just confirms that they can fuck off and my next site later this year will be Squarespace because it is actually ideal for technical fuckwits like me who just want to add content and that's all. For every one of us that votes with our feet and wallets, there are 9 others who will not however, either because they can't be bothered, or have not yet experienced the negatives. All I know is it comes back to one thing and that is if I ran my small business like 90%+ how many others do, I'd be out of business. Or hate the process so much I'd have to shoot myself.

  3. I've just reduced the sale price of my S5 from 1500 down to 149.99 for 1 minute...and bought it off myself! Off out to shoot my project now. I'm not even going to use a lens as the deal didn't come with one.

  4. I'll just add that I am in no way looking down on people who aren't in the 'actual' film/commercial industry. Most of the time I am not there either, and I'm doing corporate work or branded content for local businesses. The resources and gear available today make it possible to create amazing content even as a solo shooter. However when it comes to improving, those times when I do step in to a larger crew - even if it's just a 1 day TVC shoot, are without a doubt the times when I learn the most.

  5. Given the previous thread about the pandemic, why not simply a 5x5 short film (ie 25s comprising 5 scenes of 5 seconds each) on the theme: Perceptions of Pandemic. So anyone who feels that they’ve been staring at the same 4 walls for the past 12 months will have to be creative and find a 5th scene. Who knows, you could compile the best of the shorts and persuade one of the reputable media outlets to showcase them - a global view of what Covid has meant to a group of creatives.

  6. Exactly, this is one reason why recently I've had a change of tack and I'm trying to get more jobs as a Boom/Utility rather than a OMB Mixer. Although, not quite working out like how I'd have hoped on the current 12 week long job, as I'm a more knowledgeable/experienced drama mixer than the guy I'm working under.

    Directional lavs?

Doesn't sound as good. I started with a NTG2, then I "upgraded" (it wasn't!) to a ME66, then I got a Sanken CS3e / CS1e (and many others since!). Should've just skipped those first two and gone to something decent.

  9. Resolve 17.1 now supports hw decoding of h265 4:2:2 10bit. For intel you need an ice lake and tiger lake cpu. For Mac an M1.

  10. You were claiming that casting a female VP in 1989 would be unheard of, and it would create a big impact to do so, and I just proved that literally decades earlier it was not just happening but not just the VP but even the presidency! Exactly. There are many.

  11. Fair enough Tim, but the opposite POVs expressed here between 'business craft' and 'art craft' (not a trading mark of the gaming industry for sure LOL) don't necessarily mean every filmmaker will have to run the whole steps of the career to succeed and see the outcome popping up. The same way a filmmaker is the one able to have 'product' 'to be published', no matter where he/she is coming from. Especially today along the digital age. There is world in the lens-based media outskirts. Lots of 'digital filmmakers' get outstanding achievements without the old school standards. A lot has changed. Let alone with the streaming now. As @barefoot_dp adequately nailed and clearly illustrated from those words above-posted, I just can't stand that shooting ad nauseam in a daily basis is a much faster learning curve for this craft/business/industry/art/whatever we want to do or call it : ) Shooting is just a part of the process, filmmaking is much beyond to have a camera setup in hands (E :- )

  12. Well yes - there's a reason why, in the *actual* film industry, nearly every DP started as an AC, every gaffer started as a grip/best boy, every producer (actual producer, not exec) started as a runner, PA and line producer. There is absolutely no substitute for hands-on learning surrounded by people who really, really know what they're doing.

  13. Well yeah, that really shows that I'm wrong when I say that films reflect the social mores of the societies that make them. Doesn't trade on sexist or heteronormative tropes in the slightest!

  14. Business as meaning of activity, craft, occupation, industry... If industry is often connected with profit, art is broader, I believe. Profit is usually the last purpose of making art.

    Redundancy

There ain't much of any kind of shot I capture that you can't find something very similar to it elsewhere. I think that's true for most people, even the pros. In fact, I was watching some of Roger Deakin's work from Sicario earlier this week and realized there's an almost identical shot from the David Lean's 1946 "Great Expectations" that's a direct copy. (soldiers defending into darkness, shot by Guy Green) Pretty cool homage/rip-off. But, even still, every combo of shots and audio is definitely a new context. So what we do with those shots is what matters. Often I get paid to create mundane context, but it's context the client wants. I'm okay with that. I'm not super creative. No genius stuff here. Ultimately I'm rock and roll, not progressive jazz.

  16. A former instructor of mine from Lisbon film school was used to say: a film is only 25% shooting. Let alone the good ones, I'd say... LOL : D BTW, his master is still listed and world acclaimed as one of the most influential filmmakers of the history of motion pictures.

  18. Learning skills can vary depending on if you're shooting more work or not. The downtime has allowed me to learn new skills such as colour grading, but also shooting so many Weddings per year allowed me to quickly learn the ins and outs of shooting with a particular camera and general use of the editing software. I picked up Resolve quite quickly 2 years ago, learning on the fly, because I had to. When you have actual projects to direct your learning, it can focus my efforts more than if I were to just dip in for the sake of learning.

    R5 vs R6

@Dunjoye not sure what you mean, I find the IQ super clean. Much less noise than on any previous gen Canon tbh. Obviously high-ISO introduces noise, but I find the noise on R6 to be very fine grain and quite filmic compared to the horrible banding present on older sensor models. You can also turn NR off which is good. Re: AF Lens noise I don't have much experience with RF lenses but they do seem louder than their L counterparts. I've noticed quite few RF have open barrel front moving elements so that could be part of it. Fast F1.2 and hybrid macro lenses like the RF35 are going to struggle to be silent as well. Optically, the RF lenses are quite amazing though. I've got my eyes on the RF 15-35mm 2.8L IS. I don't do much telephoto stuff and like to shoot close to my subjects.

    R5 vs R6

The RF 35 lives on my R6 (as the EF adapter is back-ordered due to the Canon factory fire). I've come to really appreciate this lens as it is quite compact, versatile, sharp, aberration free and has macro & IS. For the price it's killer, I like it so much I'm thinking of adding the RF 85 1.8 Macro IS.

  22. To put it simply: WOW. It takes some time for your eyes to adjust to this crazy aspect ratio, but after a short while you'll be fully immersed. Great vibe, it has that 'True Detective' feel to it. Not much really is shown directly, instead you have to rely on your imagination. That works for me. Overall: I was left longing for more. Much, much more. All shot on a GH5 and an anamorphic adapter that sometimes go for as low as 200$ - Schneider Cinelux WA (beware, it's huge and quite impractical).

  23. Menawhile, as predicted, here in Brazil things are escalating quickly. Already in the ballpark of 2300 deaths per day, now we are on top of the ranking. South states are already collapsed - lot of cities with 110% of capacity in the ICU's. Troves of people in the 25-40 years old dying with the P1 variant. Here in São Paulo, the largest and richier city, the health system is target to collapse in 10 days. And still, no very strict lockdown enforced - even with the Araraquara example, the 1st city to collapse, the only one that made a more-or-less lockdown (we never had a REAL lockdown in Brazil) that resulted in a 70% reduction of new cases after 12 days. Or the Portugal example (in which @Emanuelcould talk more properly than me). And since the central government demises masks and vaccines (today was announced the fourth REDUCTION of the vaccines available for the month, since March 1st the number decreased by 60%), we will go to the 3000-4000 deaths per day very soon. Again: just hope to be alive to be here in 2022.
