It's finally arrived. First impressions, - I really like it, - the size and weight. On my S5 with Smallrig baseplate, it's a moderate weight (a good thing as in not too light) but compact set up and when I think back to my old DSLR Nikon D3S with 24-70mm f2.8... it's a huge amount smaller and lighter and far more capable for stills, never mind video. 1/8th mist going on and then I'll be putting it's through it's paces soon enough. I can't at this stage see the 24-105mm f4 being here for much longer...4 points

It probably seems a bit insensitive of us to announce that here, given your previous posts. I feel huge sympathy for Brazilians right now and feel very angry on your behalves about the asshole you've got in charge there - hopefully one day soon he'll face justice for what he's done (and hasn't done).3 points -

I had a few excellent deals last year because "m43 sucks" gx800 for 150 euros, had 170 clicks gx80 for 200 euros, had 800 clicks em1x for 900 euros + macro adapter, had 5000 clicks em1 mk2 for 450 euros, had 7000 clicks gh3 with pl 25mm 1.4 for 350 euro epm1 mini with kit lens for 25 euros (had to pay 15 extra to get the sensor cleaned though) so I keep tell everyone... sell your m43 gear for cheap, to me3 points -
The Sony IMX800 is rumoured to be a 1-inch sensor designed for phones. It is expected to make its debute soon. What does the future hold for dedicated consumer cameras if this rumour is true? https://gsmarena.com/rumor_the_huawei_p50_phones_will_be_the_first_to_use_sonys_1_imx800_sensor-news-47938.php https://twitter.com/RODENT950/status/13645077079071784962 points

Sony Semicon's Exmor RS line has now fully matured and will come in various sensor sizes - all 8K capable. One of the first to make the debut is a 45MP Micro 4/3 (MFT) sensor with 2.24um pixel size. More to follow.1 point -

I'm guessing with the Olympus sale users are trying to grab up Olympus gear out of fear it won't be around much longer. I know a lot of M43 users that have exclusively Olympus glass even though they shoot Panasonic.1 point -
IMX800 1-inch sensor — Are we nearing the end of dedicated consumer cameras?
Matins 2 reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
I think regardless of this particular model, the sales of traditional DSLR type cameras are going to wane so much that the market will be niche in the immediate future. Speaking for myself, a handful of what I'm already filming now is done with a phone. And the other camera I do use and find perfectly acceptable for my doc work is a very modest cheap m43 camera. And I'm a quote/unquote professional. As phone tech advances and offers computational imagery with video, I don't see how the consumer market could be anything but dominated by mobile devices leaving camera enthusiast with slim pickins'.1 point -

The new OnePlus and Huawei P50 look like they will have very good sensor specs. That takes care of the UWA and WA modules, but to tackle the telephoto lenses, someone will have to bring the extending lens design back and bet on a (very) thick camera hump. With every company just drowning in the dozens of models they offer, one should be a premium photo-first device.1 point -

Most "clinical" lenses
Mark Romero 2 reacted to MrSMW for a topic
My Panasonic 24-105mm f4 is a bit 'clinical'. It's not uber-sharp, but pretty sharp and a bit too 'videoy' in my opinion. I'm not a fan of zooms anyway. Says the chap who recently bought this lens and ordered a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 I have some more testing to do, but I believe the 1/8th mist will be my friend in this regard. Also, the Sigma 65mm f2 I am looking at as a prime workhorse is supposed to be sharp, yet have characterful rendering, especially in the OOF areas. I've seen some fantastic results with it using a 1/8th mist so it bodes well... Ultimately I'd rather have something more sharp than less sharp as it can always be reduced in post whereas if the lens is soft as baby poo in the first place...1 point -
Camera owning plans 2021
Mark Romero 2 reacted to Stab for a topic
I don't think I'll need another camera for the next couple of years. I own 2x S1 and 1x S5 at the moment, and they are exactly what I need at the moment. The only 'downside' is that the camera's can't record 4:2:2 10-bit and full frame at 50 fps. But, I have now invested in anamorphic lenses and these camera's offer great anamorphic support. In camera desqueeze and even the IBIS takes the squeeze factor into account. Also nice is that the 4:3 crop of the sensor is a bit higher than the normal S35 / APS-C crop (and slightly narrower) and that means that the crop factor when shooting a 1.33x anamorphic lens is reduced with about 20% as opposed to shooting in s35 mode. That's close to APS-H territory which is IMO, all you need for video. Add to that the great photo quality and decent AF (for photography), the relatively small filesizes, the great DR when shooting in V-LOG 10-bit and the price... I really can't complain. Well if I have to complain, it's the lack of an OLPF.1 point -
Panasonic S5 User Experience
Jimmy G reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I agree with @zerocool22 the S5 and S1H have identical sensors, LOG profiles, etc. I highly doubt in most scenarios you would be able to tell the difference. I think the reason you think the S1H is a lot better is because it is more likely that the buyers of the S1H are shooting higher end productions where they can properly light the scene, use better lenses, etc. Unless the S1H is shooting 5.9K raw (which BTW even the S5 can do now to an external recorder), the S5 and the S1H should produce nearly identical footage if all else is equal (lighting, staging, set design, lens, etc.). Of course the S1H is the better video tool due to not having recording limits, full size HDMI port, and other minor HW details; but none of that really affects the picture quality. In my opinion though, the S5 really shines as a hybrid photo/video camera which is definitely not something the S1H is known for. I don't know if any other camera out there can remotely control 4 wireless flashes using an internal transmitter, unlimited intervalometer, aspect ratio bars in camera, and some of the other S5 photography features that almost no one talks about. With the upcoming firmware update for the S1, I do think it will then become the best hybrid camera mainly due to the 1/320s flash sync speed and the full size HDMI port. Unfortunately though in my opinion the downsides to the S1 is it uses mismatched recording media, and the screen is not a full tilt flip.....however none of these features means the S1 or the S1H will produce more "cinematic" video than the S5.1 point -
This is a great topic! I had a bride to be die of COVID, so I had to give a full refund for that poor guy. I had 8 friends and one family member die and a dozen or so associates. I got one of my vaccination shots with another in a few weeks. COVID is a full bitch. The whole year I shot five weddings instead of the 25 I usually shoot. Most didn't want to splurge on video, so I went back to offering $500 wedding stills in people's backyards since everything else was shut down. The worst thing is, I live in Ohio, and the majority of my clients are in Pennsylvania, and the two states imposed a travel band between each other. So I would have to get a COVID-19 test to travel to P.A. and quarantine when I arrived back to Ohio, even though it was only 45-60 min away. I was blessed to do several corporate jobs for my biggest client, and that kept the income on the year flat, with much less stress than any wedding work. Problem is, that is one big client making up 70% of my income. That ain't the best from a diversification standpoint.0 points
