I am fully with you on this one : ) These smartphones "IT designers" are absolutely dumb, inept to understand what a device should be. I am done with so much silliness, ignorance, well, incompetence, I must say. They have no simply clue of the horse in their hands. They think they're dealing with some sort of poney or even a donkey :- ) For some GOOD reason, I've posted this one here and am still looking for: That ASUS ZENFONE 7 PRO flip cam is one of the most useful tools I've ever shot with. Coupled to efficient 4K 120p would really be a dream. So? They have decided to cripple it without manual exposure! : ( What else to say?

I should have included commentary/satire in my post, but that's not something that someone would pull my content for. My content is usually used when someone is talking about a specific vehicle and they don't have proper footage. So they grab mine. That use is absolutely not covered under Fair Use. I've been in publishing and production for 20 years and my application of the copyright tool is completely within legal guidelines (and YouTube has always agreed with my claims.) Even if my forum posts are as comprehensive as they should be. 😉

Somebody with a clue about photography needs to walk into the Chinese smartphone manufacturers and tell them how to do things. In 2014 the Panasonic CM1 with large 1" sensor came along and there's been a 7 year wait for another 1" smartphone to add the latest computational photography image processing. The Samsung ISOCELL GN2 in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is finally it! There's no doubt about the technical capabilities of this smartphone and that it's capable of some wonderful results (after a bit of grading) as well as 8K. Technically this sensor has every latest development - 50 megapixel, 8K, dual gain ISO readout (per pixel!), Quad Bayer, Dual Pixel Pro AF (split pixels horizontally as well as diagonally!) and more. The phone even has a Time of Flight sensor to assist AF in complete darkness. So why does it look so shit? DXOMark has the full run-down on the Mi 11 Ultra with sample photos. RED Hydrogen had decent colour science. Sony Xperia 1 II has the most natural image I've found so far. The Chinese ones are all an inconsistent mess. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is the best I've found. But of course the software side is crippled. It's very frustrating. Nobody seems capable of going forwards in a good way. Apple have mucked up their image processing a bit too. Since the iPhone 11 Pro Max they have turned the digital look up a notch, more over sharpening, but real resolution not really going places. I haven't found a reason to switch from my iPhone XS Max. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a nice sensor but in day to day use it hardly makes any difference. Only with the IBIS on manual settings in RAW does it stretch out a lead... Less noise, pin sharp image at slow shutter speeds in low light. For my main phone I can't switch from Apple to Android especially not without Google Play Services on Huawei. So I stay with Apple for now and use the Mate 40 Pro as a camera only in second jacket pocket!! Is there GCam for it?

It's in-between the 1/1.2" and 1" on this chart, so practically 1" as near as makes no difference. Bit like Canon APS-C is still APS-C even when it is a 1.6x crop vs 1.5x crop. How long before Micro Four Thirds sensor in a smartphone? 🙂

I have no noticed much latency, but at the moment shot only still objects. In the weekend i will test with some family member and my kids so i can report 😉

Programming is a tool to achieve your goal, not a goal in ITself. IT people should get some education outside IT, mostly if they end up deciding things that are not IT related, like color rendition or lens/sensor/crops on a mobile phone.

Thanks for clarifying. My friend is going through a nightmare right now because Russian trolls have filed takedown notices on a documentary he self funded. They'll falsely claim a clip is being used illegally, which pulls down his video for the 30 or whatever days they have to file legal actions after he refutes it. Then when the video is finally restored another troll will do it all over again. It has happened 3 times so far, all because it documents Russian atrocities in Syria. It has made it pretty much impossible for him to recoup the tens of thousands of dollars he spent making it and he has no recourse other than going through YouTube's process since he's not an outlet like VICE that can reach out to YouTube easily and put an end to it.

The F250 with the V8 7.3L Powerstroke is a hell of a truck. Extra cab, not the crew, full-sized bed.

Bring back V10’s to F1 would be my vote.

Like everything in life, context is paramount. The example of the ursa/a7sII is (without context) quite misleading. First it depends on what Ursa, 4k, 4.6k, pro, g2. Second it’s not useful to compare one shoot with one camera with a shoot (even if it’s the next day) with another camera (unless you are shooting exactly in the same conditions. And thirdly, I wouldn’t use an ursa for any shoot that I would consider using an a7sII, the Sony in log starts at iso1600, most ursas you wouldn’t want to use 1600 for anything. The size and weight of both is a great differenciator for the types of use of each one. On the other hand, I agree resolution isn’t everything and a 1080p image of anything blackmagic is quite a good image, mainly (for this tread about “k”s and resolution) because it’s not as compressed and in every ursa, it’s downsampled from bigger sensor resolutions. And that’s precisely why I bought the a6300 in 2016 for, it downsampled 6k sensor info to give a 4k image, which at the time I wanted for a 1080/2k delivery. Now the context is this: I use anamorphic lenses and they are not “sharp” and with a 2x lens in a 16:9 sensor you crop a lot on the sides and I wanted as much resolution as I could cheaply get for that. The gh5s was not out yet, the bmpcc4k was very limited in dynamic range or iso, there was no 4k mirrorless canon, nikon or Fuji cameras.

ASUS got a very interesting feature: Guess what? Just looking for an Android app able to handle manual exposure going along the fast frame rate of 4K 120fps from ASUS 7 PRO hardware. As well, disabling the 'Edge Enhancement' feature offering a more cinematic outcome such as FILMiC PRO or Cinema 4K apps for example. However, there are limitations. Those third parties don't allow any competent 4K slowmotion on ASUS 7 PRO as happens with the proprietary software. Open Camera is open source. Some features are available only on a few devices, as they may depend on hardware or camera features, the Android version, etc and definitely not on ASUS 7 PRO, unfortunately. I wonder if Open Camera app wouldn't be viable to be directly adapted in order to address such needs? Or what about a new app from scratch? Is there anyone out there able to develop it in one or another route solution? I believe there is a huge market just waiting for... Almost every Zenfone 7 PRO user taking advantage of this unique 4K 120fps feature would salute and buy this new arrival, I bet. Without mention, one of the goodies of this cameraphone, the retractable/flip camera, is only available on the proprietary app. Why not on third parties? Is it feasible? Any takers?

Very true, I'd call it artificial detail to such oversharpening, even though speaking about the same anyway : ) But, while we can overcome that on post, adding blur, it is impossible to handle anything serious without manual exposure. Let alone flickering among some other unwelcome oddities, really. In any case, FILMiC PRO has introduced the possibility to disable it, so I believe any third party software can easily get it...

Artificial sharpness is never welcome. Period.

I've used this rig lately and I'm really liking it. It makes the Micro feel a lot smaller while still having a monitor.
