  1. You can shoot in HLG at 10 bit H264 as well.

Primarily for stills? Why not a Z7? Keeps you in the same ecosystem! That's the smart practical choice. Oh! That's crazy cheap. But then you'll have the problems of the a7 mk2 series: overheating, short battery life, etc

  4. I shoot the Canon R6 with the exact same problem. It is unusable. Just got back from Mexico shooting surfing videos. Overheats within 10 minutes! Whats worse, it is not even when I am actually shooting movies. It is in movie mode and I am just waiting to press the record button. Just focusing with servo-af on it will start the countdown timer and finally shuts off. Absolutely worthless POS. I got a total of three minutes of video out of four days of shooting. I am using the Atomos Ninja V in ProRes HQ mode extenal recording only, screen is off and flipped out to allow the back of the camer under the sensor to cool off, still same problem. Updated firmware, everything. The video quality is amazing. Wish I could use it for video, but it is literally not useable. I am so frustrated right now. The weather was hot, but I have the same experience here in Huntington Beach at 6am when it is 45 degrees out. Overheats as well but I will get around 20 minutes before it shuts down. This is while it is just focusing and not actually recording movies!!! Absolute garbage.

Just as a comparison: I regularly do Portrait-Photography with my 5D Classic from 2005 and make videos with the BMCC 2.5k from 2012. Both cameras are able to deliver stunning images/videos. I own both a Pocket 4K and a 5D mkIII, but I don´t feel I can´t get good footage, when using the older devices. Sure, the new ones offer some nice things, but they aren´t nessesary all the time. So I think a a7rii form 2015 is a great camera. If you can buy one for a great price and you like the image you get, go for it.

  6. New here and just purchased an S5 - very interesting discussion. Really liking the camera. I'm not a pro but have quite a bit of experience with HD video. Not got top end gear so shooting in 25p, UHD 4k, 8-bit. Though the 1080p looked pretty good too (was stunned by the comment earlier that 1080p and anything 8 bit, including 4K, is 'garbage' - what are people on?). Was wondering about some more basic stuff from users who have had more time with it: what ISO range and aperture do you find most efficacious for 'normal outdoor shooting? This is the best quality camera I have owned personally and with other cameras I always avoided cranking up the ISO (grain) and closing down the aperture too much (defraction) and so always use an ND filter as much of what I shoot is outdoors. I bought a couple of nice NDs for the S5 - 3 and 6 stop (Breakthrough). If I use the 6 stop, even with the aperture wide open, I have up the ISO a bit (but not that much), whereas with the 3 stop I find I have to close the aperture to 6 or more and leave the ISO on 100. But then the aperture goes up to 20 I am not used to this range or high quality ISO. Thoughts / experiences?

I've easily shot 50k images with the a7r2 and its still my favorite of all the Sony sensors, eventually I'll probably own another as a landscape/backup camera. I'd love it if they did a faster version of the 42mp sensor for the next a7IV. Even at about $900 or so used, the a7r2 is a bargain for the IQ. But if I were in your shoes, I'd probably stretch that for a used Z7 just for the easy compatibility with lenses/batteries and same colors if the budget allows. Cheers Chris

  8. Have you noticed that there seems to be with few mount exceptions, very few (comparatively) lenses 60mm (m43), 80mm (APSC) or 120mm (FF) or longer faster than f4 made recently? Only about 5 for M43 (apart from some cheaper MF ones). If you make it an "equivalent" aperture as you should (if using "equivalent focal length"), it gets even worse for choice. Canon APSC seems to have the largest native choice since they can use any EF mount lens and plenty of 85 mm primes and zooms qualify. Still, you can always adapt and (for stills at least) get pretty much native use with Canon EF lenses on many systems including Sony E and M43. I prefer faster longer lenses and like to be able to blur out a background while still having plenty of the subject in focus. A few more shots from my ancient Tamron 300 2.8. (speakers at the march4justice march here in Wagga yesterday).
