Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L
ArashM and 5 others reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Maybe save that criticism for the Matti Haapoja's and Peter McKinnon's of YouTube and not the guy that does rather dry long form reviews and regularly criticizes the things you think he's trying to sell? I say this as a very vocal critic of the YouTube filmmaking bubble. I don't always agree with Gerald but it's ridiculous to act as though he's looking to maximize clicks and affiliate sales. His videos would be under 10 minutes and feature him pouring coffee (gotta get that pouring sound!), riding a one wheel around, and otherwise pretending to have a far more exciting life than he does, all while talking about how awesome x is and that you should definitely check those affiliate links down below! At least be fair if you're gonna criticize the guy.6 points -
Hey guys, Since the middle / end of last summer I've been making a feature length documentary. I have 3 more shoots to do, and then it can be finished. However I wanted to share a small teaser I've made in anticipation of sending it out to festivals etc. I'd love to hear all feedback, comments, criticism etc. Please don't be shy! Shot entirely handheld (apart from one shot) with BMPCC4k, Viltrox speed booster and Sigma 18-35.4 points

Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L

Yes, the Youtube influencer machine is awful, but Gerald is the least offensive offender. He does all technical reviews, true, but at least he does a thorough and honest job. Only CVP is anywhere close to the usefulness of his reviews from a pure tech standpoint.3 points -

I believe this is Japanese but even without understanding anything I can tell it was a way better "review" or hands-on than DPReview did. Yes, I have nothing against information style videos like Gerald did. I quite enjoy CVP much more as they actually use the camera and offer feedback. Gerald's videos are kinda like technical launch promo videos. I find the deep dives of the technical bits useful and I throw the rest away, including any buying advice. Infinitely more useful than anything from Peter McKinnon or Matti. They are now purely lifestyle channels with a camera fetish slant. When people say influencer those guys are the textbook definition. When they want something they ask or e-mail companies to send them free shit and then tell you to stay humble.2 points -

Need some buying advice

The variable ND adapter for EF to RF works quite well. The only annoying thing is that the clear filter is just as expensive as buying a non-ND adapter. If you get the R6 you would also have an excellent photo camera. If it's only for video use I wouldn't really recommend the R6 since many people have had problems with overheating. The R6/R5 has excellent focus though, and even the manual focus is better than other cameras. It will tell how far off you are from achieving focus, which direction you have to focus and the focus guide will snap to the subjects eyes if you want it to. I am extremely pleased with my R5, but if you think the image quality is 'meh' and you're doing full time video it's hard for me to recommend it.1 point -
Teaser for my new doc

Mission accomplished then! The car is there because the garden is right up against the road. I thought it'd be weird to start opening the fence, without having some idea of where the fence is. Without wanting to give too much away, the garden's location and proximity to the city centre play a large roll in the documentary. Perhaps that's something that should be explained more in the full trailer. For this teaser, I wanted to focus a little bit on the man, and his ideas. The full trailer will go into what the actual story is. For now though, I've written this little blurb, which hopefully makes things a bit more exciting.1 point -

Visually really cool. The subject is super interesting. Wasn't even thinking about the gear. I would love to see more shots with a deeper DOF to see detail around the garden. I guess more wide shots in general and less contrast. I also thought the bright red modern car felt a little out of place, but maybe the juxtaposition is interesting. The piece has such a nice timeless feel and place without it. Look forward to seeing the full length doc!1 point -

That's why I also appreciate Caleb Pike. I know Andrew isn't a fan but he buys most of the gear he reviews, including old cameras. He also seemed to take people's criticism of the EOS R launch trip he took to heart and hasn't done any of those all expenses paid trips since. There are some decent YouTubers out there, which is why I tried to make a thread on here about them (some sadly should probably be removed now as they've become shills that only talk about things sent to them for free.) I wish Andrew and others would do more on there, as whether we like it or not it's kind of THE platform since the community that was once on Vimeo has dried up.1 point -
That's what I do but in combo with IBIS, ie, I use a twin strap shoulder harness with my left side camera being my primary stills and my right side camera my primary video. I use the video unit mostly at near arms length, pushing with tension against the strap and move my body as a whole rather than move the camera. If that makes sense? Actually, you don't really need IBIS to do that, but I just leave it on because a lot of the time I am static so one less thing to think about and do.1 point

That's right, no steady hardware. I have a V-mount on rods at the back of the camera, so that adds weight, and I can rest the butt of the battery on my chest, 1 hand on the grip and 1 hand on the lens. The only shots with post stabilisation are the tiles at 0:41, the greenhouse at 0:54 and the title shot at the end. They're all a push/pull into something, so it's hard to hold it against your chest and get a long move without having to take a step. Since then, I've taken to wearing a neck strap, to hopefully give me that extra stability for these kinds of shots. I can pull the camera into my chest for most things, but for more movement, it's easier to push the camera away, and have the strap create tension.1 point -

Blackmagic Micro Cinema Super Guide and Why It Still Matters
alvaromedina reacted to kye for a topic
The 14mm really surprised me from that shoot actually. The edit you guys saw was only a subset of the larger video I shot which included lots of shots of my wife who was there with me (she's internet shy) and the lens looks great for people. Specifically the ~40mm equivalent focal length, the rendering of detail at a normal subject distance and with the lens wide-open is quite flattering, it's borderline as long a focal length as you'd like to use hand-held in a small rig without OIS, and the DoF was shallow enough (or even moreso) to create some subject separation. My follow-up to that video was to do more tests with the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens to see what the DoF and subject separation is like on that slightly slower lens, and I also bought a 12-35/2.8 to try that too. I think that using these lenses (any of the ones I mentioned above) wide-open is probably a good balance between getting a softer rendering to avoid moire, to not have too digital a look, to get shallow enough DoF to separate your subject, but also to not have too shallow a DoF to be able to manually focus relatively easily, especially on a smaller screen. I can imagine that I might end up with these setups: P2K with 7.5/2 and 14/2.5 as a truly "pocketable" setup M2K with 7.5/2 and 12-35/2.8 as a larger rig for slow-motion P2K / M2K with my 17.5/0.95 as a low-light solution1 point -
Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L

I have nothing against him as a person, in fact has done some very informative stuff, and I've praised him for it in the past... just think he is part of the same machine, and that in the case of the Fp series he hasn't given it a fair crack of the whip. It is a direction for the internet overall that I'm just not too glad about. It is becoming just all powerful brands paraded on TV, brands influencing the influencer, and the incredibly anodyne nature of the personalities bores me to death... to the point of provoking them even, just to see if there is a real person there. I also don't get the same filmmaking inspiration I do from tech guys as I do from an actual Dp. It's what makes Bloom so persuasive - the pretty pictures - makes people overlook the person he actually is in my opinion, but we won't get into that again.1 point -
And playing devils advocate, all 3 personally own cameras from the L Mount Alliance with Leigh and Hugh owning Leica SL2's and Tech360 (I forget his name) has or had an original FP. I think I have that right, but all 3 anyway are fans of the system. I think Hugh also has an S5... Gerald is very much a Sony man these days, but nothing wrong with that or his channel, - I watch it quite a bit, respect the guy and don't feel I am ever being sold anything or channelled anywhere and don't begrudge him making a living. It's all just opinions ultimately. Now (for me) S1R or FP-L as a pure photography tool, hmmm...1 point

Camera resolutions by cinematographer Steve Yeldin
MaverickTRD reacted to slonick81 for a topic
So Natron we go! As you can see, latest win version with default settings shows no subsampling on enlarged view. The only thing we should care about is filter type in reformat node. It complements original small 558x301 image to FHD with borders around, but centering introduces 0.5 pixel vertical shift due to uneven Y dimension of original image (301 px) so "Impulse" filter type is set for "nearest neighbour" interpolation. If you uncheck "Center" it will place our chart in bottom left corner and remove any influence of "Filter" setting. The funniest thing is that even non-round resize in viewer won't introduce any soft subsampling with these settings. You can notice some pixel line doubling but no soft transitions. And yes, I converted the chart to .bmp because natron couldn't read .gif. It's the only thing you're percieving. Unless you're Neuralink test volunteer, maybe. Well, that's how any kind of compositing is done. CG artist switches back and forth from "fit in view" to any magnification needed for the job, using "1:1" scale to justify real details. Working screen resolution can be any, the more the better, of course, but for the sake of working space for tools, not resolution itself. And this is exactly what Yedlin is doing: sitting in his composing suite of choice (Nuke), showing his nodes and settings, zooming in and out but mostly staying at 1:1, grabbing at resolution he is comfortable with (thus 1920x1280 file - it's a window screen record from larger display) In general: I mostly posted to show one simple thing - you can evaluate footage in 1:1 mode in composer viewer, and round multiple scaling doesn't introduce any false details. I considered it as a given truth. But you questioned it and I decided to check. So, for AE, PS, ffmpeg, Natron and most likely Nuke it's true (with some attention to settings). Сoncerning Yedlin's research - it was made in a very natural way for me, as if I was evaluating footage myself, and it summarised well a general impression I got working on video/movie productions - resolution is not a decisive factor nowdays. Like, for last 5 years I need one hand's fingers to count projects when director/DoP/producer was seeking intentionally for more resolution. You see it wrong or flawed - fine, I don't feel any necessity to change your mind, looks like it's more a kye's battle to fight.1 point -
Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L
dslnc reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
I'm not sure the statements "he's in it for the affiliate links" and to "sell sell sell" holds true when your main complaint is that he's giving a negative review to a deserving product. Just to be absolutely clear, how many of you have tried both the A7r4 and the fp L, and find the fp L to be a better camera, and why? I'm genuinely curious, because as I mentioned before, from my point of view the fp L isn't as strong but the vast majority here seem to know something I don't.1 point -
The only issue with that is that camera companies only tend to hand out demo models to established 'influencers'. At least early on. But otherwise, I agree and it would be more 'fair' if these tools reached the hands of shall we say, more real world users rather than kit reviewers. The latter does happen, but only later down the line and usually after the user has purchased for themselves but by then, a preconceived idea of the tool is already established whether it's 100% accurate or not from those early 'reviews'. Which is why I personally take all these kinds of things with a pinch of salt and make my own mind up. I've never bought a camera or piece of kit based on anyone's opinion but my own.1 point

Also I think this is a really unfair characterization of Gerald. Long form camera reviews, especially ones where he is critical of the camera he's reviewing, is not the best way to get views and affiliate sales. If his intentions were to maximize his views and affiliate link sales he is doing a terrible job.1 point -
Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L
dslnc reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
I get some of the criticism but I don't think Gerald was unfair in his review. Sigma's doing some cool things but they're not for everyone. This is a peculiar release, I don't know a ton of people who would be in the market for this camera. Most people that need 61MP aren't going to buy a Sigma fp-L. Some will, and they'll love it, but it's not the ideal solution for most folks. That's not to say it shouldn't exist or that it doesn't do some impressive things, but it's a very niche market it's aiming for. Andrew comes from a different angle than Gerald. I think by sending Gerald a review unit Sigma wants to get as many different viewpoints as possible. I think that's to their credit. Varying opinions are a good thing and I want to see cameras in the hands of different people with different use cases. Just my opinion, though!1 point -

Thanks for the info Kye!. I have to use the 14mm more than I usually do, mainly family and holidays videos with the bmpcc, because I´m thinking now that I don´t remember to notice moire or aliasing problems in those videos (also in prores)...so maybe it could be one of the best lenses for the microcinema.1 point -

SIGMA FP with ProRes RAW and BRAW !

Maybe one day Atomos will take the hint about doing a 4K Ninja Star. Of course with the fp being able to record to an external SSD itself you would imagine it might be unecessary to use a full on external system anyway but I'm guessing this might be the only way to currently deal with RED's patent.1 point
