  1. Although I wish the BMMCC had a small monitor on the top like the Komodo, I still prefer it over the BMPCC. I usually shoot ProRes, but I like that it has the 3:1 compressed raw and the 60p. The miniature cinema camera form factor also looks kinda cool. My rig is almost complete... I may eventually buy a BGH1 for a similar reason, especially with the new Tilta rig for it... I'd lose the baseplate/rods and the top handle and throw a Ninja V on their for some ProRes Raw. This looks pretty good... But I digress, I kinda like the infuriating form factor of the BMMCC.

  2. I have an R5, too. After the firmware updates it has been a great camera. I use the 8K as a specialty mode for faking slider or other camera movement in 4K timeline or lower. CLOG3 improved the DR issue and I think it looks great compared to other Sony cameras. The 4KLQ mode is more than useable for YouTube long form content. It's better than EOS R and that was a great "YouTube" camera. I can edit everything (8K isn't completely smooth) off of a $1600 M1 13" MBP. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Can't wait to see more from Canon. Sony has been crushing the technical side of things and their color science has improved a lot since A7III days.

  5. I recently had two nightmare experiences with eBay. One, I sold a Roland TV switcher from Dublin to France. It was shipped with a courier with tracking. Because of a delay caused by Brexit, the buyer logged a claim with eBay. They refunded him the full amount, even though all parties could see from tracking that the item was in transit. I was blown away by the indifference they showed to me. Even though I sold on eBay.ie, because the buyer was in France his claim was made through eBay.fr. My local eBay washed their hands of it and said talk to France, which made communications extremely difficult. Ultimately they upheld in his favour and I was left with no money and no property. eBay simply didn't care. When the Brexit backlog cleared the buyer received his item. I then had to write a dozen anxious yet polite emails to him before I got a response. Luckily enough he sent me the money, and even acknowledged he was shocked eBay moved to re-pay him so quickly. I've vowed to delete my eBay accounts, but you have to wait at least a month after your last transaction with them before they'll let you leave. #sobad

  6. It's not like eBay will take the time to watch that video anyway.

  7. I hear you. Instead of eBay, I do a lot of selling on Fred Miranda forums. You have to pay a fee to sell on the site and you must build up good feedback to sell. Because it's a niche market, you end up with scrupulous buyers and sellers.

  8. That’s sad and disheartening to hear, but I’m still going to buy their gear because a lot of the tools I have and I’m expected to purchase are literally approved by the camera manufacturer I use. My career depends on these products, which allows me to have a cohesive and efficient workflow. Regarding the YouTube personalities experiencing this type of behavior from companies, if my future depended on income from being a “creator” and not actually creating content for “real world” clients, I would be gung ho behind this. Still, I hope that it was just a rogue employee and not the company’s culture because SmallRig doesn’t come across like this. Hopefully his video will bring attention to this issue.

  9. Here's my subjective opinion... NO. 🙂 Relating this back to the subject of the thread, I couldn't possibly think of a better example of why the BMMCC still matters, because the GoPro is perhaps the best example of what is wrong with modern cameras - it has more pixels than the BMMCC but looks worse in every way, even in an unfair situation such as being put on a 4K timeline. The BMMCC matters because it has a nicer image than almost all of the current cameras, regardless of resolution and including cameras many times the purchase price. The fact that a GoPro is a real competitor for the form factor is laughable. The BMMCC intercuts with an Alexa without much trouble or issue, but studios create contractual clauses specifying the maximum length and number of shots that a GoPro can be used for on real productions. There couldn't be a more stark comparison than that surely!

  10. I bought a P2K (OG BMPCC) purely because it had a screen. The M2K (BMMCC) is tiny, and some lenses are tiny, but once you add a monitor it instantly becomes the size of a 1DC or larger. They did make a 4K version, it was called the Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/au/products/blackmagicmicrostudiocamera4k It has a group of loyal fans, but it truly is a studio camera and doesn't perform well outside of studio conditions, plus it's discontinued and there aren't many out there in the wild so is hard to get hold of. It will be interesting to see what happens to GoPro, both the camera line and also the company. The camera line seems to be a YT mainstay as it's a tiny camera that with its wide fixed-focus lens and excellent in-camera stabilisation is perfect for vlogging on the go, but the image quality is always a disappointment with DR issues / plastic colours outside and bad ISO noise and drab colours inside. Many YT channels were built on a single GoPro, often used without any accessories whatsoever, just literally holding the camera between thumb and finger and relying on the stabilisation to work magic, or putting it on a shelf or on top of a bottle as a temporary tripod to do a talk-to-camera section. I'm not sure what pressure there is for BM to update the Micro, but maybe there is with increasing VFX prevalence.

  11. I found 8K RAW to not be as difficult to edit as I had feared. On my Intel 8700K/RTX2070 it wasn't exactly smooth in Davinci Resolve, but absolutely doable to edit.

  12. Very strange they didn’t update the design a bit. The off centered battery causes tons of mounting problems, the screen isn’t that bright for $1600, and no SDI is very strange since these are basically raw recorders now (which wasn’t entirely the case when the first Ninja V came out). Pretty lazy upgrade.

  13. Is manual focus an option at all for this situation? Because the S-Series of cameras have pretty much the best features for manual focus. they have linear focus and you can customize the amount of focus throw. They also have the AF+MF, so you can set the camera in AF-S and then just rotate the focus ring to override in to manual focus. Unfortunately though, still can't punch in while recording.
