Sony A7S III – 10bit vs 8bit 4K/60p
hyalinejim and 3 others reacted to Thomas S for a topic
A lot of this is due to 32bit float color space in NLEs. As long as the 8bit has enough to not have posterization the 32bit float will likely be able to fill in any gaps as the image is pushed hard. Grading is much easier for math to fill in gaps than say upscaling an image. In the case of upscaling new pixels can be averaged but averaging doesn't work for fine details like a hair. Grading however we are trying to prevent posterizing. That is done through smooth gradients. Sometimes averaging surrounding values does perfectly. For example if you have a color of value 200 and another value of 250 its easy in grading to averaging an in between value of 225 which still creates a nice smooth gradient. Where 10bit is important is making sure the shot is captured well the first time. Once you have posterization it will always be there and no 32bit float processing can magically make it go away. Visually ion the shot has no posterizing than no matter how hard it is pushed it likely never will have any or pushing the 10bit would show just as much. Thats why 32bit float was created. 10bit is a lot like 32 bit audio or 16 stops of DR that are graded down to 10 stops. We record more so we have it and can better manipulate it. Most of the shots above likely would have still looked good with 6 bits. You need a very long and complex gradient to break 8bit. It can and does happen. The more noise the camera has the less it will happen because of dithering. I think this is partially why Sony always had such a high base ISO for log. Finally 10bit never promised to have better color, more dynamic range or less compression artifacts. Thats not what bit depth does. Its all just about how many different color samples can be used across the image. The single and only real side effect is posterizing. Many computer monitors at one point were only 6 bit panels even if they claimed 8bit. Most never really noticed unless they did something like use the gradient tool in Photoshop to span a full 1920 wide image. In the case of the clear blue sky image in the article that wasn't even a difficult gradient. Most of the sky was a similar shade of blue. To break 8bit you need to create a gradient going from 0 blue to 255 blue across the full 3840 pixels for 4k video. That means there is a unique blue sample every 15 pixels if you create a gradient like that. So your sky needs to go from black on one end of the screen to bright blue on the other side. Not always realistic but you can shoot Skys around dusk and dawn that spread the values out a lot more than mid day. By comparison 10bit has a unique blue color sample every 3.75 pixels for UHD video. It doesn't even have to be something that covers the full screen. If you have a gradient over 100 pixels from 200 blue to 205 blue that still means a new blue sample every 20 pixels. Even though the screen area is very small. I develop mobile apps and when I add a gradient I run into the same problem trying to do a subtle gradient across something like a button. The gradient needs enough range to cover the area of pixels or it will look steppy. 10bit and higher is a safety net or guarantee to likely never have any kind of posterizing. In the professional world thats important and nobody wants surprises after the shoot is done.4 points -
Short film shot in first lockdown with original BMPCC
Belle reacted to Sandeepthefifth for a topic
I single-handedly shot an entire narrative short film during the first lockdown, using the original BMPCC. The camera performed magnificently but I did have it fully rigged out. Shot using two SLR Magic primes - 10mm T2.1 and the 17mm T1.6. A one-person crew and one-mother cast, this is a film featuring my poor mum, who’s never acted, and a very, very unlikely hero… Jean-Luc Godard once said “All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.” My mum doesn’t speak very good English, so I had to do without dialogue. I didn’t have a gun so we had to do without that too. We couldn’t leave the house, so I shot it all there. And I had no crew to help me, so I did everything myself. If anyone has any feedback or questions I'm always happy to hear! https://youtu.be/SBwje8EDl841 point -

I see a tons people complaining about the marketing/hype machine that is the "filmmaking sector" of YouTube, and I hate a lot of those clichés too. That being said, it has been in the back of my mind to try out for a while, so yesterday I had some free time and I finally decided to give it a go! Turns out it's actually a lot harder to film yourself and talk right to camera than I anticipated (I very quickly abandoned my plans to shoot it anamorphic, focusing on my S1, all by myself, was just way too difficult) and the whole process took me far longer to shoot and edit than I expected. Anyway, here's my (first ever) attempt at this kind of video: I'm assuming a good number of users on here consume as much YouTube as I (sometimes regretfully) do? I've always considered Eoshd as a cut above the rest of the internet filmmaking-afficcionado crowd. I'd love to see anything anyone else on here is making in this space too, and/or see if we can start a discussion about good, lesser-known channels to follow that aren't specifically about shoving gear/affiliate links and clickbait sensation down our throats.1 point -

Princess Diana - death by a million clicks
RWR reacted to Robert Collins for a topic
Andrew you seem to have an incredibly romantic view of British royalty 'I once met Princess Diana as a schoolboy. I remember it vividly. Waving flags, bright colours.' That's ok I guess (I used to hang out with Di's brother, Charles, at school and he seemed a decent sort of guy.) But I do think the whole royalty thing has been massively devalued (not that it really should have been valued in the first place) by the whole millionaire royals complaining to millionaire presenters about being traumatized by their 'excessive privileges'. When you get involved with the royal family (or like Diana choose to get involved with the royal family) you are in fact taking on 'a deal with devil' with ultimate riches and the consequences that come with them...1 point -
What teleprompter to buy?

I like Scott's videos but he's one of those YouTubers that pretty much only reviews things sent to him for free, so it might be worth looking for other reviews. It does look like a pretty good option, but I'm just always skeptical until I see more reviews from people that don't have an incentive to give more favorable reviews.1 point -

Weirdly enough, my mom as a college kid had a Morris 1000. And, like mentioned, I ended up with a 1960 Mini 850. A bit remarkable considering both of us were from the USA Midwest, and these old English cars were very rare...but pretty cool to my eye. As a kid only 15 years old without a job, I committed to working for my mom for 6 months on a house project...and she gave me the extra $200 I needed to buy the mini. I guess somewhat similar to the Strangler’s song?1 point -

Good call then!!! Much better to go for good and "get it done" instead of waiting around for perfection to arrive. You probably know this already, although some people reading this might not, but it is good to get about 5 or so seconds of "silence" so that you can capture JUST the background noise / AC / refrigerator / whatever and then use the audio noise tool to better isolate background noise. I know in Resolve there is an audio FX that allows you to "sample" the noise (they call in "Learn", and then it will automatically try to suppress JUST the noise. It is never perfect, but it can be a fairly good starting point. If you give it about five seconds (or more) of just background noise, it seems to work better at "learning" the noise.1 point -

@Mark Romero 2 That's a great tip, thank you! Better than what I was trying, leaning an overstuffed pillow in my chair with a focus chart taped to it lol. But yes, you nailed the sound issues, and I agree, in hindsight the music is a little much, and my air conditioner was super loud and wouldn't turn off... but I knew if I didn't just sit down and record the thing, right then and there, while my inspiration and motivation were aligned, I probably wouldn't have done it at all. Thanks for the feedback, and for watching!1 point -
I presume that's how it works. so i'm guessing we both can't be wrong. 😁1 point

While a bold statement, its 8K RAW certainly can punch above its weight class, so to speak. Pretty good for a non-video 8K video camera that people aren't buying for video...🤔1 point
