  1. The Sigma fp series of cameras are very capable. I’m actually thrilled that I’m able to produce expensive images on a budget. This allows me to build out the accessories needed to run a smoother production. Here are some unprocessed screen grabs of a project I’m working on. I’ll be also using these cameras to film a series based on a popular subject within the Hip Hop industry. Also here’s a link of a comedy skit I filmed for an extremely known TikTok personality who is trying to build up her YouTube channel. I don’t follow the popular camera trends and what’s hot, hence my name here AltShoo which is an abbreviated form of Alternative Shooter. This is why I use the JVC-GYLS300 and even though the next camera I’m mentioning is the most “popular” camera in my arsenal, it’s still not a trendy tool, I own an EVA1.

  2. This right here. I am not enjoying your rants, Andrew, because (a) it’s a losing game, (b) makes you come across as bitter and (c) doesn’t seem to be your ‘groove’ and doesn’t accentuate your differentiation and strength. Whether you are right or wrong isn’t the point; you can’t change the rules of the game and it doesn’t make for entertaining content. In my opinion, your strength is the intersection point between technology and creativity (I would love to see more of the latter to balance the tech side). You aren’t competing with bloggers, YouTube’s or even cinematographers if you create your own category. And that doesn’t mean you can’t voice a strong opinion as part of your concept. I just would rather see you fight FOR something instead of AGAINST.

  3. The old-school method is to take the camera with you to the place where you WILL be standing, focus on your tripod head from that spot, make sure the focus on the lens doesn't change, then put the camera back on the tripod and go back to the EXACT spot you were standing when you focused on the tripod head. The distance from you to the tripod head is the same as the distance from the tripod head to you 🙂 As far as using a remote, I can try with my pixel remote later and see, but (obviously) with adapted lenses it will have to be af-s.

  5. The URSA has SDI out and will give you monitoring options without slow latency issues. If you are a solo shooter the P6K pro is definitely superior. Smaller and gives you everything you need. Super bright sharp built in screen, EVF if wanted, 6K, 3200 iso, internal ND's. If you need a camera that is suited for a more professional environment the URSA is superior. It's just made for that purpose. The P6K has only a single HDMI out. Rolling shutter is another issue. The P6K has pretty noticeable rolling shutter where the URSA has a super fast readout, like an Alexa. You also get 4k 120fps on the URSA. Handheld on the URSA looks much more organic but you can work around that by uses stabilized Canon lenses on the P6K. The Pocket 4k is a great camera if you can get by without internal ND's. Its got a fairly fast readout so the rolling shutter is much less noticeable than on the P6K. You actually get a wider FOV with a speed booster on the P4K as well, close to full frame on the .64 metabones ones. You save some space with data on the P4K and 4k is a bit easier on the editing software. Color is better on the P6K, the low light performance is a bit better, it also has more dynamic range. The Pocket 6k actually has better dynamic range than the URSA, tho I think the URSA looks a bit more organic.

  6. Your video? It was hilarious, in a good way. Loved it.

  7. Perhaps first ask yourself, why "upgrade" from your P4K? What is it not doing for you? Is it even necessary to get anything else?

  8. Out of the two, I'd personally go with the 6k Pro, and spend the difference on a nice lens / some kind of stabilisation, since its a lighter camera. With that said, if you're in no immediate rush, I would also wait for BMD's next camera. Their last two releases were the 6kpro and the Ursa 12k. I think the next release will be somewhere in the middle. Maybe a box camera with their custom sensor, even if it's 'limited' to a measly 8k, it'd be worth waiting for. They're not going to outshine the 12k anytime soon, and they also won't release a lesser camera than the 6kpro. So I would continue to use the 4k for another 6 or 7 months until the next announcement. If you don't like the next camera, the 6kpro will drop in price and you can get it then.

  9. Gerald’s review of the fp is based off his usage, which is a personal thing and since he’s influential, his personal tastes are passed on to the sheep of the earth. For my personal needs, this camera exceeds plenty! I had the chance to purchase a BMD12K, Komodo, a GFX100 and a FX9, but decided on a pair of Sigma cameras. A fp and fpL kitted out with some lenses from Irix and Dulens. I also paired them with two Atomos Ninja Vs. I really watch these YouTubers just to get perspective. I make up my mind by simply testing and knowing what fits the workflow I want to use.

  10. Using the imaging app to remotely control the camera over wifi, possibly using the camera itself as the wifi access point?

  11. @zerocool22 I don’t think you will have much, if any chance, trying this with a non-native lens and even then… Certainly not in face tracking mode, the key to which is tapping the yellow box once it has found a face, ie, that yellow box needs to be activated to track. So many people are unaware of this and Panasonic hardly help their cause as they should really do a bit of shouting about this fact! The ONLY mention I have ever come across is on the YouTube channel of Luca Bona. Photo Joseph…who seems like some kind of Panny spokesperson maybe (?) may have mentioned it but not seen this point stressed by anyone but Luca. Will it work with an adapted lens? Maybe…I don’t know, I only have L Mount lenses, but if you can’t tap that yellow box, it’s not going to track! You could however try the oval box AF which might work? The non-face tracking won’t work either as you need to again set it and tell it by tapping in order to instruct it what to track. I think PDAF is coming however. The FP-L has it but it’s a bit crap as things stand. I suspect firmware will improve it. I think the GH6 will have PDAF and if so, then I think it will be a sign that at least all future Panny and Sigma cameras will have PDAF and I think Leica will have to jump on that ship, because if they don’t, all 3 are going to sink faster than the ill-fated passenger liner of 1912. “Iceberg, dead ahead!”

  12. @zerocool22 I think the best solution is to put the lens in manual focus mode. Focus the point you 'll be standing, hit the button and go! I believe this way will be 100% in focus. I wouldn't rely on AFC with an adapted lens. Cheers

  14. Video Hummus

    Sony A7S III is noisy

Gerald released his “What Cameras are Other Youtubers Using” video and 85% of them were using A7SIII in a studio with controlled lighting. Second was A1, and then S5, R5, and RED Monstro. Maybe 10% of them would use the A7SIII out in the wild where the crazy 12,800 ISO is useful. Power of hype machine and branding dollars to spend.

  15. Get the best camera you can possibly afford (C70/FX6) and ditch your employer as soon as possible. Having an industry standard cinema camera puts you in a good place to pick up jobs. Your lenses will work fine on the C70. I have the C70 and even the cheap EF > RF adapter from Meike works perfectly well. The X-AVC is easier to edit than the HEVC, but you can always transcode.

  16. I say if you like Nikon, dump the money into Z lenses and wait for the camera to come along. They lenses will last your whole career and it can't be that long until all the major brands do great 8K cameras. I think it's better to think long term like that, rather than switching systems multiple times for the current best camera and taking a loss every time you do it. I saw your Promised Land Retreat video and I have to say that the video quality would not put me off buying a place like that if I had the means - the video was very effective. So I would say continue doing what you're doing, but update for the future.

  17. So I am trying the self timer for creating some selfies, but whenever I hit the photo button it focuses on my face while I am right in front of the camera, then I run back to the background where I want to be standing, but then the camera doesnt refocus. (I am using an S5 with EF adapter and tamron 24-70mm g2.) Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks,

  18. It is funny to watch channels reviewing gear, when their main use case is making the review videos. I think Linus Tech Tips is the best example, where they have entire videos about building workstations to edit their videos about building workstations. Credit where it's due, it's not a bad business model, and in Linus' case they're open and honest about it. Actually I'd say the same about Gerald, who has said in a few videos that his primary use for his gear is sit-down corporate interviews. He's said in a couple places that he's not a "cinematographer" or a "vlogger." I think the guy does a good job presenting information. If I want basic information about a camera or mic he's reviewed, I usually watch his video. I wouldn't try to get any artistic ideas from his videos. I think that's where you should position yourself with your channel, Andrew. I've always liked/agreed with your opinions on color. I think you're at your best when talking about artistic use cases and reviewing gear from that perspective. We don't need you to compete with tech gear reviewers, just talk about what you're good at.
