    The end of EOSHD

New gear is great but if you have nothing to shoot what is the point? I think that sums up the sentiment we've all been through this past year and a half. It's been brutal for a lot of us independent pros. I sold a lot of cine gear and lost a lot of money in the process. Seriously considered leaving the industry as well. Fortunately for me, business has picked up again and that's really all it takes to get excited about shooting. Because for me its really all about shooting, gear is just means to an end. Too much gear can also be a buzzkill. I saw a great video the other day shot with just a G7 and a macro lens. I'm a strong believer in limitations spark creativity. Not just in filmmaking but all creative areas. Its a hard motto to live by these days within a gear-driven industry. Speaking of apple and tech GAS, I had to resist the urge for the third year in a row to get the "pro" model. My phone died so I did cop the iPhone 13 but went with the mini. Love the form factor and my phone will remain just that a phone. Photos & videos shot with it will remain on social media. No ProRes on smartphone for me, oh well. Also thinking about getting the iPad mini, it feels like a Moleskin notebook. I hate big tablets, might as well just use a notebook at that point (also just got the M1 MBA). Just waiting to see how the A15 compares to M1 as I would like to do some basic editing on it and need HEVC support. Anyways I'd be sad to see this place disappear. I haven't been around since the start but it's been an incredible resource and community, even with all the riffraff and drama. I think we all owe Andrew a big thanks no matter the outcome. I don't always agree with his views but at least he has a freaking opinion unlike 99% of the internet shills. As a primarily Canon shooter I also thank him for being so outspoken on the overheat-gate issue that got us solutions and even got Canon to somewhat address the situation. Who will have the clout & balls to do so if this independent voice disappears? Keep going Andrew, your doing the community/industry a great service by being vocal on matters that matter!

  3. I expect the inflated prices of cards will last as long as this current covid era lasts. As there a lot of factors which have caused the high prices, but a major major factor is that covid messed up supply chains around the world (leading to greater costs of manufacture and delivery, and lower supplies) and that lots of people have been stuck at home (thus more inclined to splurge out on home entertainment, such as a new gaming PC, rather than spending that same money on an overseas holiday instead). None of what I just mentioned will change completely until covid is behind us. People won't tomorrow suddenly shift their spending from buying gaming PCs to going on overseas holidays. Neither are these supply chain screw ups and manufacturing issues going to resolve themselves speedily. Now for your question, will this ease up within the next six months or not? I can't answer that, but I think this Star Trek meme sums it up best:

Keep the site. Look at what happened today....Facebook, IG, WhatsApp all down. Decentralized content will make a comeback.

    Which Monitor to Buy?

Do you need HDMI loop through? If so, the Portkeys has it. Atomos and SmallHD do not which is their major downfall for me. The LH5P is a nice monitor and I use it for gimbal work. It’s nowhere near as easy to use as my SmallHD 702 Touch as that has a great menu system compared to the average one on the Portkeys but the image of the LH5P is nice and bright enough for outdoor use. I also like being able to control my Pocket6K pro from the LH5P screen. Means rarely having to touch the camera when on the gimbal. I think the LH5P is the one to get of the monitors you mentioned and you will get used to the clunky menu system after a bit of use.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Just the motivation I need to try and turn the ship around. I can't promise much at the moment. Hopefully I find the energy to do that. Would not like this place just whittle away to obscurity after 11 years so if I do need to change what I do in life, I would look at selling EOSHD and would never just hit a button to take it offline. The original purpose and spirit of picking up a small mirrorless camera and making films is still there today and we need to help one another on that mission.

The last 18 months have changed me completely as well. No more traveling because the company “is remote first”, no more creative minded colleagues, it’s all about process and numbers. All Zoom meetings are to the point, no more laughing. Dealing with 9 hour time difference (USA HQ) The 2 years before that was helping my wife with her rehabilitation after she suffered a stroke. Which was hard with a 1.5 year old and a 7 year old. We were back in the Netherlands coincidentally (we came back to NL for friends and family) when it happened, and so I decided to immigrate back not knowing whether she was going to recover and be able to speak and walk again. The immigration causes all kinds of financial challenges (taxes, insurance) which cost me close to $100K in the end. These events - rehabilitation, lockdown and now isolation shook me to my core. It changed me. I feel completely burned out. Life has gotten more “bare” and I have to find myself again, find what I truly care about. Connect with people, build something new. Add on the fact I’m 41 and probably having midlife crisis at the same time (proof: I drive a Tesla!), and the party is complete. Sorry for the long story - what I’m trying to say is that your personal struggle resonates with me and I want you to know that many people around me including myself have severely struggled the last 2 years. Social media didn’t help either; it has created a fake lens of the world, especially the last few years. It’s like 99% of the people are acting or presenting a version of themselves, instead of being themselves. Things will get better, but as you said you may have to force change. Whatever you choose to do next, I wish you all the best. Never, ever give up the values you live by. Take care.

  9. Why would you choose the Pocket 6K over the 6K Pro at this point? $500 for internal NDs, tilt screen, larger battery, and the ability to add an awesome tilting EVF.

  11. I'm using Adobe Premiere. Occasionally After Effects for motion graphics. For editing my own footage, my current machine is mostly fine because I'm shooting Prores (Z Cam). I started off more as an editor, so I tend to prioritize edit-friendly cameras for my own purchases. However others don't do this so much, and the latest gen of cameras (R5, A7sIII, C70) are going to be a much bigger strain for editing supplied footage. I'm not always editing my own work either - I've just started as lead editor an 8x22min series and the footage supplied is a mix of Red, Blackmagic, GH5 and GoPro. This is going to be tough for my current system, though thankfully I'm not having to deal with those latest codecs just yet. I'm trying to avoid proxies for this one as we'll be bouncing projects around between editors quite a bit, and I don't want things going offline constantly when switching between different machines.
