    Alexa Bargain

That last sentence segment is key. Let's say each shoot has a small $1K profit margin. Assume there is only a marginal 10% improvement on extra future business from that client or their network (let's assume we're starting with a baseline 1:1 ratio, of each well done job leads to another) because you shoot with an ALEXA vs showing up on location with a "mirrorless toy". You do fifty shoots per year (thus making a modest $50K/yr profit for you to live on). If an ARRI Alexa Classic costs $5K, then even under these very modest assumptions, you'll break even on that investment after just one single year of shooting.

Saw them playing "Man with a movie camera" live to the film in Glasgow when it came out. Fantastic experience.

    Alexa Bargain

I'm as obsessed with the Alexa look as just about anyone. I had a major shoot on Friday, I was toying with renting the Amira, as it is very affordable in my area. I don't have a lot of experience actually using it though, so ultimately, despite having plenty of budget available to rent a big boy camera, I decided to just shoot it on my tried-and-true S1. I didn't even use pro res raw, just regular 5.9k internal hevc. I monitor using the GHAlex LUT on my ninja v, so I can nail the look "in-camera" before I grade. I think it's pretty dang close. This screengrab has zero adjustments or color alterations besides just dropping on the lut. If I can get 95% of the way there, and have higher resolution to boot, at the cost of maybe a stop or so of extreme highlight retention in certain situations, I think it really starts to be hard to justify, beyond just impressing clients and feeling super cool and hollywood.

    The end of EOSHD

Hey Andrew! I haven't been active in the forums here for years, just looking in here now and then - mostly because my life has taken many new directions since the phase when I was very much into photography and video. I've been working from home in isolation for a long time now, it's been 1.5 years ago since I worked in offices. It's a big difference in social life, especially since I've kept my social circle small. I can't help you in making a decision or finding out a next step. But I thought I'd fill in how I approach times of low motivation, or how I approach it whenever I feel like my life is stuck. Maybe it can inspire, give ideas? For me, whenever I've felt stuck in life or that there's nothing new in my life, I have often had what I guess could be called an existential crisis. What I have found that I have done to process this, is to evolve myself by trying new things - from learning new computer skills, softwares, and programming languages to running, road biking, kayaking, hiking, winter camping, mountaineering, skiing and rock climbing. What I have found, is that I enjoy learning new things. I love exploring the wild. I rarely use anything else than phone cameras these days, but through my interests I've found a big interest in GoPro cameras and I recently also picked up a drone - which gives a new dimension when I'm exploring nature. Since I spend my work days in front of computers, I have cut down on the time I spend on computers at home, so the goal I have when I film these days is to do as much as possible when shooting, and as little as possible editing at home. I feel stuck and bored to death when I sit too long in front of Premiere, Resolve or Lightroom. But, whenever I focus on a hobby like skiing and film that with the Gopro, I try to focus on making a process where I can film myself or friends skiing in one go from top to bottom. I give myself the opportunity to make something with one shot of video, where I don't need to edit, only do some minor adjustments - and that gives me inspiration. The skiing itself is like meditation - but it also gives me an opportunity to make a video, that shows what skiing is all about. Here's one of my videos. I like that it shows skiing raw just the way it is, and it also makes it an easy process for me to produce videos like this: So whenever life feels uninspiring, or you feel that you're stuck in one way or the other - find new things to try out, make changes to what you do, whether it is small steps or bigger steps. Keep doing what you get inspired of and what you find fun, and take a break from what you don't enjoy. I love this forum and the discussions going on here, and I think it's impressive what you've built up over the years. But at some point you need to try new things if you feel stuck. I hope this site lives on, and I hope you can find new inspiration and joy in your life. Cheers!

  5. Celluloid was much more forgiving with camera shake. Digital technologies look awful with jitters and make people sick more rapidly. The brain knows it's unnatural. Content is king, but 99.9% of the time I'd watch a shaky old family film than a shaky iPhone family video in 2021.

  6. Still, i just won an auction for a tasty bmmcc with a oplf/ir-cut filter, cage, npf battery adapter and hdmi support. Guess it will be raw camera porn, which means me lookin at this beauty rather than having the camera look at @webrunner5 The people from slashcam already tested prores via filmic app. It still has all the sharpening and processing, a bit more resolution due to using a hair more of the sensor. So the same image like the ifon12.

  7. Tens of thousands of people were completely content to watch Porn Movies when I was young shot on 8mm, super 8mm film cameras. They ignored the horrendous handheld jitters, terrible low light ability, and just crap film skills for what, Content, and Content is king. The camera, be it an iPhone or an Arri is the least of your problems.

    Music you love...

Music is very personal to the writer and the listener for different reasons, and for me, this song can never be beaten. The whole album is fantastic and I urge anyone who hasn't heard it to give it a go at least once. EDIT: they also soundtracked the 1929 film 'Man With a Movie Camera' and that's a great album too, especially if you can find it synced to the film.
