  1. Looks like they are using the same raw codec for both stills and video mode then? 6:1 and 12:1 compression modes 500Mbit in 1 bit per pixel 12:1 compression for DCI 4K 60p. Which could mean 4K/24p cinema at under 250Mbit!! 1000Mbit in the 6:1 mode (4K/60) 8K is up to 4000Mbit in the highest quality mode. Not sure which of these Intopix configs they have actually implemented on camera so if anyone finds some more info from Nikon or a good source do let me know

  3. Ok, I want this RAW, RIGHT NOW! High Efficiency raw size is LESS than size of high quality Jpeg!

  4. They have licensed the raw technology from a company called intoPIX. Its kinda a surprise, because their new raw technology announced just one month ago! Here is what they call TICO-RAW: https://www.intopix.com/tico-raw

  5. Continuous stills shooting duration: Full res High Efficiency RAW 20fps: 60 seconds. Full res JPEG 30fps: 7 seconds 11MP (no crop!) JPEG 120fps: 6 seconds Also 4k 120P video records audio!

  6. Cool to hear it's working for you, I would imagine that it would be quite flexible with those lenses. I shot a fair amount with the XC10 with it's 24-240mm equivalent lens, and the framing potential for quickly grabbing shots was really good. Interesting about the sound. I haven't heard any reviews of that yet, but I'm not worried. I find that for travel I'm typically interested in having location audio but typically keep it low and underneath music to give a sense of ambience rather than it being used for proper dialogue. I'm also relatively unfused about audio quality. Well, I've been playing with hifi for about 25 years and am actually super-critical of audio, so critical in fact that below a certain level of quality my brain simply turns that critical part off, kind of like how food critics wouldn't be critical of fast food in the same way they're critical of fine dining. So naturally, that makes all audio basically under that threshold and so I pretty much don't care. It's quite a useful thing actually 🙂

  7. Generally, lenses with an STM motor are optimized for video shooting, so the might be slightly slower than other lenses, but the focus is smoother, and I believe they are quieter. I don't know which RF mount lenses have STM motors though. I guess the only way to really know for sure though is to see if anyone has experience using that particular lens for video.

  8. Very much! How can I determine which lenses are silent/don't make noise during video? I like the RF 35 f/1.8 but i think i saw it makes some noise during focusing in video mode that is a dealbreaker despite being so afforadable!

  9. I think my point is being missed, I'll try again: On forums there is a lot of focus on which one or another is "best", arguing over a small difference here or there or whatever. Missing the big picture. Ten or twenty years ago, all these discussions made a lot more sense. As it was the early days of digital. Because you were seeing a big improvement each generation. Made it much more worthwhile discussing these improvements from one generation to another. So when someone said (& is right) that whatever-camera-body is "better" they really meant indeed BETTER!! Not merely some lukewarm "better-ish". But eventually, once everything is "good enough" those improvements are plateauing. This happened a long time ago in the DSLR world, when exactly? Depends on your opinion, and the their own needs. (could be argued that say it plateaued out at a different point for a hobbyist than a pro) But I'd say ballpark, this has been the case for the last five to ten years for photographers. While that hasn't happened yet for HDSLR/mirrorless video (or perhaps, it only just happened, in the last couple of years or so). Compare a sequence of cameras from the same line up, for video: Panasonic GH1, GH2, GH3, GH4, GH5. Each step, was a BIG deal. For instance as just one example for each is (and they all had more improvements than just the one example I'm highlighting): GH2 gaining full resolution live HDMI out so you can use monitors, GH3 gained slow motion, GH4 got 4K, GH5 got 10bit internal. At each step, all of these were a big huge deal. Look now at photography, say for instance Nikon's range of semi pro DX bodies: Nikon D70, D80, D90, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500. For the photographer, if you look at the D70 vs the D7500, that's a radical mind blowing improvement. But if you look at same the middle of the line up, say D7100 vs D7500? Meh. Yes, it is an improvement, but not earth shatteringly so. Can't fault a photographer if they decide to skip on the "upgrade". But in the first half of this line up, then each and every one of those steps from D70, to D80, to D90, to D7000 was a huge big deal. But after that? The rate of improvement kinda slowed down. Thus my core point is, if you need "good enough" (i.e. nearly all nonpros on a budget), then don't obsess so much over photography specs, compared to the importance of comparing their video specs instead. As in the photography world, the "good enough" point got hit many years earlier than it did for videos.

  10. Looks like Apple may have a custom chip, which didn't exist before. Low power, works in a thin chassis. The iPhone 13 Pro and now the Z9, something seems to have happened with ProRes encoders...

  11. This camera is the perfect cam for the Apple eco system with internal Prores and Prores Raw! Now I tempted.

  12. Much better than expected all round. Probably a bit overkill even. But ProRes and that insanely fast sensor with very little overheating even in 8K makes it unique. I am impressed. They are saying the sensor rolling shutter is as fast as a mechanical one.

  13. There's no crop in 11MP 120fps stills mode. The sensor is 2x2 binned for 120fps readout (same method for 4K 120fps video)

  14. First Nikon Z I'm genuinely excited about. 8K60p / 4K120P. Internal Log, Raw, ProResRaw & ProRes 422 HQ!! No overheating problems and good RS performance. I mean damn could this be the full spec no compromise pro hybrid?! Even the price is a nice surprise. Well done Nikon!

  16. Hm. I wonder what N-RAW could be. Nikon name for Blackmagic BRAW codec ? As said having in mind Nikon will use the same Exceed 7 processor for all cameras following Z9, we may see a more affordable hybrid camera shooting RAW video internally.

  17. I used to use PW remotes for my remote camera, now in most cases I just start video recording and select the image after from the video, is much quicker to find the right moment in Resolve that culling many images. The big advantage for me no more miss fires, buffer full and so on. Also the fact that now camera are fully silent is a big plus too in some environment that I place the remote

  18. Internal ProRes HQ and internal 12-bit RAW coming in firmware. Nikon is going all out with this for video it seems.

  20. When I say “if I wasn’t a pro”, I really do mean me personally as in everything & anything I do that is not paid, I never use my ‘work cameras’ but instead, much prefer to use smaller & lighter stuff. Sony ZV1 is my current ‘personal’ camera and even that doesn’t get much use next to the iPhone 8 and that is far from cutting edge these days. I think next year I am going to trade both and combine for the first time properly, phone, stills, video, all in one single unit. But as above, this is not me ‘advising’ anyone else, just stating personal use/opinion and that’s not going to be for everyone for sure 🙂

  21. That would make sense. I have noticed that "sharpening" tools do this in-camera or in post. I always turn off sharpening and noise reduction as much as possible- I've always preferred the image. You're right as it's a question of taste.
