  1. Thanks! Getting going is always the hard part. And shooting something is always better than shooting nothing. Upgrade obsession is a hollow pursuit. I get sucked in too, though lately I find myself bored by videos that are trying to sell some expensive thing that is going to possibly make an incremental improvement to my kit. I hope you make it down to your art and garden center. I think you'll be happy that you went.

  2. Its more or less Dogme 95 without the tapes. Maybe time to update the manifesto and create Dogme 21

  3. A few clips with the G85, trying to answer the question, "can I walk with it?". So, several longer walking shots: I was expecting a resounding "No", but the answer is "sort of". If I had a top handle and had used a wider lens or my focal reducer (or a Power OIS lens), I might have gotten away with it. Not wild about the color straight out of camera, but we can't have everything. This is a pretty fun camera to use. I owned an Olympus EM10iii for a while and I much prefer this. From time to time, I film protests. I think this camera would be a good fit for that.

  4. It's not the same sensor as A1. The Z9 sensor was made to Nikon's spec but with Sony Semicon's DBI technology.

  5. I like your sample video!!! I am envious: I have been feeling a bit lethargic lately. There is this art and garden center that is literally five minutes down the road from me with beautiful fall colors that I have been meaning to shoot the last three years and... I just can't be bothered. Instead, I spend too much time on youtube looking at reviews of camera gear that I know I am never going to buy... I like the colors, and I like the overall look, but I think that we are just headed for a world where everything has to be 4K sharp or nobody under 60 is going to appreciate it.

  6. Yes, this was all heel-to-toe ninja walking on uneven ground at 17mm. The focal reducer will add a little weight and widen the shot the next time I go out. My camera also came with a Lumix 12-60mm Power OIS lens that I was planning on selling to bring the total camera cost down to around $325 (if I hadn't found this deal, I would have gone for a GX85). I might have to give Dual IS a try before I do. A top handle kind of breaks the rules in terms of a minimal setup (the whole point of this camera for me), but now I'm curious. I've been mostly a Canon shooter so IBIS is a new tool to me.

  7. I wonder how we can compare apples to oranges... Or as you wish a $100,000 account to a $200,000 one!?? ;- ) RAM is NEVER too much as far as handling workflow for future proof if not for anything else... and you won't be able to upgrade the thing tomorrow. Moreover, acquisition is going faster than for post-production processing/work... - EAG

    DJI Mavic 3

Lofty price for sure. I'm not going to lie, but the dual camera system is pretty slick and makes me want one. 160mm zoom on a drone would make for some pretty dynamic shots. The original zoom was 24-48mm. I can't wait to see some footage from this thing.

  10. I would like to believe Nikon gave Atomos a giant middle finger by just putting ProRes RAW and ProRes HQ internal into the camera. If they continue this with a future Z6 camera I could see Nikon making inroads into the video space among professionals...maybe not as a A cam but as B cam and personal cameras. It certainly has me interested like never before in the future of the Z mount and Nikon cameras in general. I'm glad to see it.

Totally agree about your comments that it's an "action" camera and that "action" is often best filmed with a fisheye. I've watched enough skateboarding / skiing / surfing videos to know that it's definitely the right tool for the job. The thing that bothers me about these cameras is that they don't have a way of turning down / off the ridiculous sharpening levels, or writing a higher bitrate / bit-depth. For example, offering an unsharpened 130Mbps 10-bit 4K in a straight log curve would be great. In terms of not getting that kind of footage any other way, it depends on what the situation is. Sure, if you want to get footage by attaching a camera to the brim of your hat then yeah, you're not getting that with any other camera, but you don't have to compromise size or weight that much before you can get spectacularly better footage. For example the BMMCC shoots 1080p RAW and is very small: or the ZCam E1, which is barely bigger than the GoPro: Both are MFT mounts and can take lenses of 7.5mm or 6mm (and some even wider if you dig far enough into C-mount history and industrial lenses) that offer seriously wide FOVs. The 7.5mm lens is FF equivalent to a 15mm on FF and is about the same as most GoPros. It's always a challenge of overheating vs features, and camera manufacturers have ALWAYS released cameras that work in some conditions and not others. It's funny that most cameras don't work for people in the hot countries but when the people in the cold countries in the northern hemisphere are effected then it's all tears and forum fist shaking! 😂😂😂

  14. The GX85 continues to be a great. I had it for over 2 years and I took videos and photos that I'll cherish forever. I only sold it because I mistakenly thought something Sony and FF would do better and they were from a technical point of view, but it was much bulkier and not as fun to shoot with. I've taken a tonne of shots with the 14mm f/2.5 too- loved that combo for over a year and a half. In 2019, when I decided I'd never leave M43 again, I've been looking for that lens. Sometimes, you can find it for about 100 Euros. Can't wait to see the results you get with the combo!

With regard to the Tokina 11-16mm, I'd left it out because, whilst not massive, it's still a bit of a lump if you are looking for something compact. I've done this quick comparison shot* of it next to the Canon 10-18mm and although there doesn't look to be too much difference its significantly heavier and the 77mm thread will add to the cost of ND filters etc. What you will get back in return for that extra size and weight though is a great lens that I don't think anyone has ever regretted buying. I've got it in both Nikon and Canon mounts and I haven't found them particularly wanting against my Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 and Canon 16-35mm f2.8 lenses (albeit they can't be used on FF). On the other hand, the Canon 10-18 can't compare with it in terms of speed (or handling when it comes to manual focus) but in its favour it adds a bit more range on either end, the stabilisation and the sort of weight that makes it a negligible addition to have in your bag. The obvious answer is to buy both 🙂 * For the benefit of @mercer, the shot was taken on a Sigma Fp with a Mamiya 35mm 645 lens on the Baveyes Medium Format speedbooster 😉
