    bmp4k adventures

I already got a price reduction on the crystal ball as it had manufacturing marks in it. So I have to a bit careful how I set it up. Not much chance of getting a full refund. Sigh. I dunno If you took the as advertised 1.33 ratio and found out later that it was 1.15 and applied it to say petrol, there would be rioting in the streets. I guess one can be more liberal on some specs as opposed to quantities.

    Best Control Surface?

Since my last post in this thread, I now own the Speed Editor for Resolve and am loving it. My earlier statement proved to be correct - the critical feature is the scroll wheel. However, I think there are three main reasons to consider a control surface, depending on what you're doing and what NLE you have. Navigating using the scroll wheel The scroll wheel is super intuitive to use when editing, and for this purpose I think the ergonomics are important. The Speed Editor (BMSE) wheel is heavy and has momentum, so I find that I use it a lot by flicking it and having it spin on its own accord. This means that you can have almost frame-level accuracy and yet be able to quickly navigate the timeline at the same time. A wheel that was just a clicky-control would be far less useful in this sense I think. Editing using the scroll wheel Probably the killer feature of the SE is the ability to hold down a button (eg, to control the out point of a clip) and move the wheel to adjust it. The SE allows you to control in points, out points, allows you to slip clips, to roll edit points, etc, all by holing down a button and scrolling using the wheel. It also has other things like being able to control the size of the viewing window, once again, by holding it down and using the wheel to adjust it. This method of working is super intuitive and a really slick feature. Editing using the buttons The SE has buttons that access functions that you can't map to keyboard keys. This is a bit of a cheat from BM, but its there, so isn't to be discounted. I would evaluate your options above based on those criteria, as they're the ones that really provide the value of a control surface, in my experience.

  5. low/no budget referred to the production value of the review itself, not to the type of productions it would be used on. As in - this review has been shot with a very low budget. They obviously don't use a big crew or have a gaffer with them, or even a proper DP. It's a run and gun review. With that knowledge, I don't expect too much. I just want to see simple demonstrations to illustrate what they're talking about. Maybe your expectations are different, which is fine. Maybe if you post some examples of your work we can see what kind of level you're expecting? Not trying to provoke, only to understand where you're coming from.

  6. Now I haven't watched the review itself, but aren't we being a bit harsh here? I find this a useful - if basic - demonstration of the DR and a quick and dirty grade. It's an ugly shot, sure. It's not a Hollywood level production, but if I'm being honest this is the kind of shot I end up with in my edits frequently, and the kind of shot you want to know you can salvage something 'usable'. Not spectacular or perfect, but usable, and in that case this is a good demonstration. If you're expecting world-class images from both a technical and artistic standpoint then go see Dune in the cinema or watch any number of big-budget movies. This is a low/no budget camera review. As a content maker myself I can see what he was trying to do, and it was adequate in my view. I don't like this attitude of piling on on somebody for one shot that you personally might have done different. Or perhaps all of our work is beyond reproach with every shot a masterpiece?

  7. It's Canada in late November. I'm not sure what you're expecting from that shot... I suppose he could've made it look unrealistic? I'd be more critical of his shot choice than his grading of Alberta when everything is gray and muted.

  8. It uses a 3M type of peel off strong sticker. The beauty of the magnetic one is that it (intentionally obviously !) breaks away from the camera if it takes a knock so whatever is attached to the filter part will suffer rather than the camera. In hindsight though, I think the alternative one that just provides the screw thread might have been a better idea (I have a similar one on the RX100) as the ND will more or less be a permanent fixture. This video gives a good overview comparison of fitting and using both I've noticed that a lot of the non-photo/video channel stuff I watch on YouTube are using these now and in the main their output looks a lot better. Of course when you finally relent and get your Sigma FP, the Fotodiox EF-L AF adapter with internal variable ND will be waiting for you to roll your own full frame RAW shooting version of the FZ2500 😉 With it supporting IS lenses, it also mitigates the lack of IBIS in the camera and the EF mount is obviously a gateway to putting your F mount or CY mount or R mount etc lenses on it and still having the benefit of the variable ND for all of them.

    DJI Osmo Pocket 2

I fully understand you : ) DJI has the best range on small form factor end, based on their gimbal bet. Everyone coming from film realm follows the reason why I am used to never end keep saying it :- ) PS What a dream!! : ) Loved it! Is she your relative, model, actress?

  10. This is an incredible product & initiative, credits & kudos to EOSHD & @Andrew Reid too! A milestone for the Indie filmmaking movement with standard industry mainstream tools (E :- )

  11. Yesterday I unexpectedly shot quite a bit with my FP and 5inch Video Assist. Man, what a combo! It's so small, and lightweight. The person I was filming told me half the time, he didn't even notice I was rolling, and of course when I put it next to my Pocket4k footage, it grades exactly the same, or possibly better. Very easy to match. I was thinking of selling the FP, because for the types of things I shoot, cDNG is just not viable (longform interviews). But then a deal for the VA12g came up, and I thought it'd give it a try. Now I'm completely sold. With this setup, I've turned a great camera that's was no fun for me to use, into a very fun, take anywhere cine-cam. My shoot yesterday was very unexpected, but I happened to have the camera in my satchel with a 28mm f2.8 FD lens. It was a dream setup, that I'm basically going to take everywhere from now on.
