EOSHD is back, and a Merry Christmas from me
Katrikura and 8 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Hello to everyone on the forum! A Merry Christmas from me! I hope you're looking forward to having a good break over the holidays and are ready to welcome in 2022. Talking of holidays - I have been having a break from EOSHD for a few months. I went and sat on a hill and finally had time to reflect on my work which is this blog and the community around it. The last video had a lot of support, it's made me really appreciate what I have in a more positive light. I'm mega appreciative of the people who took the time to say how EOSHD has helped them over the years and that they want it to continue. So that's what we'll do! EOSHD is back. Yes, this is what I have been saying to various colleagues from the industry here in Argentina; We've gotten to the point that you can make any camera look good. That's why I continue with my dear GH5. It is not that I am not willing to invest or upgrade to more expensive cameras, but I am working in a more "economical" film production framework and the budget ends up to what is seen in front of the camera. Yes indeed!3 points -

It's great to have you and the blog back. Please stay very active shooting, both to keep up your creativity and morale but also because it's far more useful for the rest of us to have real-life situations than laboratory tests to learn from. Also it just looks cool to see what you get up to out there. And please keep up your picture profile research and development, you're the best out there. I use Pro-Log and Z-Log frequently, and your C-log for the Canon DSLRs was extremely useful too. Welcome back Andrew.2 points

double-layer sensors... a new norm to come?
PannySVHS and one other reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I was being a bit comical in some of the predictions but since you mention it...cell phones have absolutely taken many jobs and replaced many technologies; photography and video has been just as equally hard hit as any of them. As a working professional who has been doing this for over 10yrs even in that relatively short period of time I can tell you that many photography and videography opportunities for professionals have evaporated thanks to cell phones. It is well documented that the camera industry has been devastated by cell phones, just like the mobile GPS market, lets not even talk about the PC market, and the list goes on and that is just in the HW segments alone. Lets not even talk about the endless apps that do things in one click that people used to pay professionals for. Every one of those contractions represent jobs lost. You mention that more and more people are doing these content production jobs but where are the numbers to back that up which show actual job creation? What I have seen first hand is a serious contraction in the prices clients are willing to pay to do those jobs and in many cases they ultimately determine that an employee placing their cell phone on a little tripod stand is good enough for their social media accounts. Lets not even forget the endless Kim K pictures that get millions of views vs the professional who spent decades perfecting their craft creating works of art that now no one ever sees (or is willing to pay for). Sure there's more "content creators" than ever before, but that does not mean they are paying professionals to do the creation or even that the process was anything more than pressing record on their cell phone. The value of professional video and photography has absolutely plummeted; the average cost for a wedding video which could easily require $20K+ worth of equipment nationwide in the USA is now around $1400USD whereas it used to easily be $7K+. The reality is, this absolute saturation of low quality content has lowered people's expectations to the point to where they do not value the time, equipment, or expertise needed to separate the great from the average and their content creation budgets reflect that. Almost every photographer and videographer I know is now doing it on the side due to passion vs full time because it simply will not pay enough to quit their day jobs. And lets not forget the plethora of mind numbingly boring movies coming out of Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and others that literally feel like cookie cutter corporate clones of each other with no plot, storytelling, or suspense whose only purpose is to gain more subscribers to their service. So yes, I do believe that as cell phones continue to get better, the devaluing of professional content creators will continue as well which will in turn continue to lead to job loss. Just because more content is being created than ever before does not mean the job statistics for professional photographers / videographers is following the same trajectory. Ok, end of rant, how about those double stacked sensors 😀2 points -

Hi, I know this forum has been quiet for a long time, but I did not want to miss the opportunity to share this teaser of my next movie. All shot on a GH5 using GHalex. This film began to be filmed in the middle of the pandemic, and now it is in post production to be released in 2022. I cannot help but thank @Sage for his work in creating this color matrix that has made my life easier. Cheers!2 points -

Has anyone here tried the official DaVinci Resolve training that Blackmagic offer? From looking briefly, it seems pretty comprehensive, and completely free. Then you can take the tests and get certifications at the end of each 'chapter'. I've downloaded the files and I'm looking forward to starting, but figured I'd ask if anyone else has tried it, and can offer pros and cons over some other options out there. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/products/davinciresolve/training1 point -

@Mark Romero 2 Yes, indeed. It is a different sensor though. Watching test videos shows that Varicam holds onto colors much better in lowlight than eva. It also offers 444 video in hd and 2k. I imagine the eva 1 being to varicam what a gh5 is to eva. All three great cams, but Varicam being a fantastic true pro tool for cinema production with an image up there with an Alexa and Red.1 point -

double-layer sensors... a new norm to come?
filmmakereu reacted to Emanuel for a topic
I obviously agree with everything you wrote, Marty : ) No new sensors will change that once the revolution is already made in the meantime. No need to say this place is the proof of it. Nothing will change the need of funding and distribution. The point is that both are much different today. Digital age has opened many other gates you could only dream before. Hey I speak by myself, started more than 25 years ago into old school film and look at where I am now with many international productions running at the same time : )) That was rather impossible just a decade and a half ago :- )1 point -
Dear Andrew, Merry Christmas and best wishes to you! Thank you for your work and this magnificient place. I wished I had contributed more than I did last year. Corona and changing social climate in Berlin have not been so easy. So I always came here to give my soul some rest but didnt share much. Welcome back and Merry Christmas, I was a bit worried about you after the last couple of posts and I've seen the effect social media can have on some other people I follow. there is a photographer in the Lakes (Rob Parson: Just a walker with a camera) who I follow and who almost gave up last year after criticism online but he "pulled through" after realizing his words and pictures actually matter to more people than those who don't agree with him (and if you don't agree with somebody just don't follow them... simple). so keep it going, speak your mind and don't let the bastards grind you down.1 point

double-layer sensors... a new norm to come?
filmmakereu reacted to Emanuel for a topic
Yeah, I'm afraid the whole transformation of this business is putting too many heads upside down. On the other hand, I think arthouse has gained much more than losing jobs anyway and affordable technology is kicking asses and taking names as ever before : ) You don't need to kiss someone's ass anymore to shoot at the mainstream film look as it was then. The time has come with or without double stacked sensors on small form factor devices ;- )1 point -
double-layer sensors... a new norm to come?
greenscreen reacted to Emanuel for a topic
I guess our mate up there had focused on the impact the smartphone evolution may produce on this craft. The fact is new competition brings both a fresh way of producing motion pictures either on new players looking for the same audiences but not an equivalent content nor production values or the consequences coming from there and the whole impact in the labour force participation and employment ratios of current industry workers. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CWqMmvYgTL1/ In Portuguese, the woman says she is a lovely woman because of her eyes, she is still able to attract any man in her country... :- )1 point -

Gh5 is using rec709 or at least a smaller color space than V Gamut is. I find it easier to grade for shots under natural light. The S line is using full Vlog and V Gamut. Varicam still has a different response and a very impressive image with its S35 Varicam sensor.1 point -

I absolutely completely disagree with this, with one caveat. Firstly, to provide some context, I have a background in computing and am very optimistic about how good the tech will become, however, I don't think it will get that good that quickly. The caveat is that technology will gradually nibble away at the bottom-end of the market. In this case, cell phones will gradually have better and better image quality and will more and more replace having a "better" camera. Essentially, this just means that it's cheaper to get the same image quality. But, since when did having a cheaper camera "take jobs"? Cameras are spectacularly better than they have ever been, but there are probably more people making their living as professionals who contribute to video creation than ever before, and this is even if you don't count social media influencers and you tubers. I'm talking about more and more people doing corporate, weddings, events, advertising / marketing / PR, etc. In fact, the improvement in the screen of the cell phone has probably created more jobs than the camera has killed because the total time watching video content for the average person is through the roof because of mobile. Everyone knows that the best camera in the hands of the worst operator looks awful, and that doesn't even account for lighting, set dressing, hair, makeup, etc... let alone writing, story, acting, etc.1 point

I don't know why I read the headlines any more. This isn't the first time I've misinterpreted one that turned out to include a completely false statement of fact. Maybe somewhere in the back of my mind I thought technical discussions on a forum such as this would have the slightest modicum of filtration from the "post truth" reality the rest of the world now seems to live in. I guess not! *sigh*1 point
-
I had a closer look at the picture, and yeah, it's not what I thought. Funnily enough, I thought "dual layer" meant two layers. No. Those words in the tweet are complete bullshit. There is already two (or more) layers, and they're making it three (or more), but it's still a single sensor. They've been gradually taking things that were taking up real estate on the front of the sensor (and therefore blocking light) and putting them behind the photo site for years. This is an incremental upgrade that some numpty decided was the ultimate breakthrough and somehow none of the previous ones mattered or count in this "FIRST DUAL LAYER" spasm they posted. I thought the implication that 'one became two' implied a second photodiode under the first, presumably with the ability to be operated independently. Sadly, no.1 point

Keeping in mind that I was reporting a sample size of one! It's possible that I got a bad card, but all of my other SD cards (I have lots, mostly SanDisk but also a couple of the Angelbird 128 gig cards that were tested for BMPCC) have worked flawlessly; some of my SanDisk cards are going on six years of use now and have been reformatted dozens of times each. The Kingstons are a great deal for the price and I hope it works out for you in terms of reliability.1 point
-
Confirming @bjohn experience with the Kingston Canvas Select SD card, further testing showed dropped frames at 60fps 3:1 RAW after a few minutes on the Micro. 50fps didn't suffer from the same problems though so if that is the limit of your requirements frame rate wise with the Micro (it is for me) or, obviously, if you only want to use it with the Pocket then it is still an option. Although, again deferring to @bjohn longer term experience regarding reliability, then its still cautionary. I've edited the original post accordingly.1 point

Here's some footage I shot with the Micro in Brittany a few years ago. Mostly shot with the SLR Magic 10mm; the clip of the church with the sun star was with the Panasonic 12-35/2.8, which was pretty much unusable on the micro due to focus issues (I'd set focus, then hit record, and the lens would immediately shift out of focus; I now use only manual lenses on this camera). The opening clip is terribly graded; I need to redo that one, but I'm pretty happy with the others. I've been slowly working on a documentary that takes place in Brittany, Québec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia; still quite a bit of shooting to do but with luck it'll be done sometime in the next five years.1 point
-
On the other hand, you've produced some distinguished superior outcome from there, kudos to the shooter as well :- )1 point
-
This video (posted previously) is really the only thing I've shot with the Micro that is edited nicely and has been cleared for general distribution by the boss... As lovely as these cameras are (BMMCC and OG BMPCC) they're too finicky / slow for most of what I do, which is why I've gotten my GX85 and am now playing with that. For reference, I shot a little video of my wife and I riding down to the beach and looking at the sunset, similar to this video, but many shots were filmed while we were riding and my main concern was not falling off while filming and riding one-handed through patches of sand while the pedal-assist on the e-bike was rather abruptly turning its helping on and off. Situations like that aren't really the use-cases for a cinema camera!1 point

Agreed that if you shoot CDNG raw or even 3:1 raw (which is what I usually use; I've never experienced any downside to the compression) you rarely need to touch the buttons. I do like having accurate dates and times, so I do go in and set those, and occasionally I will change the shutter angle, especially when shooting stationary objects indoors under less than ideal lighting conditions (I did some of that in Brittany a few years ago, shooting statues in an old church on a rainy day and it worked out very well; I opened the shutter angle angle all the way to 360 degrees and was able to avoid underexposing).1 point

I rarely shoot music videos but I made one for a friend a couple of months before the pandemic. Shot with GH5, with Pana/Leica 15mm 1.7, 25mm 1.4 and 42,5 Nocticron. And two Aputure HR 672s. @Sage I'm still absolutely loving this LUT, and it just keeps getting better and better! I use it for pretty much every single project I shoot, S1 for A-cam and GH5 for b-cam, but lately, combined with anamorphic and pro res raw, it has felt extra tasty. I just love what it does to greens, especially. These screenshots are some standouts from the past couple weeks. Thanks for all your hard work! The latest page to the PDF is attached. The problem, I believe, is that GH5 VLog L footage has an unusual full luminance flagging for video footage. This was corrected to read correctly in Adobe programs in May of this year. The key for VLog L and LogC footage is that full white (pointed into overblown light source) places below 768. If its above 768, the levels are set to video (which need to be set to 'Full' or 'Data' in Resolve) I can't give away my secret sauce1 point
