  1. Hello to everyone on the forum! A Merry Christmas from me! I hope you're looking forward to having a good break over the holidays and are ready to welcome in 2022. Talking of holidays - I have been having a break from EOSHD for a few months. I went and sat on a hill and finally had time to reflect on my work which is this blog and the community around it. The last video had a lot of support, it's made me really appreciate what I have in a more positive light. I'm mega appreciative of the people who took the time to say how EOSHD has helped them over the years and that they want it to continue. So that's what we'll do! EOSHD is back. 2. Hey nice to hear you have seen the light, no pun, and saved us from the common horseshit reviews and such on the old innerweb. There is just so much good stuff to look forward to not to be involved in it. And Merry Christmas from across the pond. Now I won't be bored to death this winter. Thank you thank you.

  7. Merry Christmas and welcome back! I am all for content of making the most of cameras around the $2000 mark, and of lenses and all the other fun things that a camera needs to work well and create great images. Great to hear you've managed to find the spark again 🙂

  10. Hi, we have repaired it successfully long time ago, resulting no real increase of bitrate. So we abandoned the investigations.

  11. Interesting. I've heard people say they compared images and they were basically the same, so assuming that's true then similar/same is good enough unless someone is planning on taking theirs apart and re-programming or re-using the chip in a different circuit - otherwise knowing the exact model number really doesn't matter 🙂 Great chip though. Pity there isn't a camera with the 2022 version of the chip. Considering how good it was at the time it would be spectacular with a decade of further development added to it.

  12. A bit of a thread resurrection, but I don't mind. I'm actually doing these lessons these days as well. I learned Premiere by trying and failing and really wish Adobe provided something similar back then. It's easy to miss some key feature when learning a tool by oneself.

  13. From what I've read, the BMMCC actually used a slightly updated version 2 of the sensor used in the original BMPCC, it's not exactly the same. Dmitry Shijan verified it in the Fairchild spec sheets; see here: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=94230#p525352 But if you read further down that thread you'll see that there's still some debate about it.

  14. Dear Andrew, been lurking a bit recently again no conversation from my side though. My event shooting is dead so no work besides shooting for my brand. No idea if you are back in Berlin but I regularly go up to the Polish Baltic sea for some surfing in frigid waters so if you need a change of scenery for shooting let me know. In the end it comes down to having fun, being inspired shooting things ( no matter with what gear ). Dude do it!!! We all appreciate it. Adding to that. Since I shoot with (old) nikon glass and I like that stuff also happy to see Nikon not losing it completely....

  17. I'd agree with the others that out of that list the GH4 is the one I'd go for, with the G7 second. But if your budget will run to a good used GH4, I'd also seriously suggest trying to stretch it maybe 25% further to a used G9, which is in a different league (GH5-level) of 1080p picture quality with up to 10-bit 4:2:2 100Mbps capability (plus you get 4k @ 24/25/30p up to 10bit 4:2:0 150Mbps and 4k50/60p up to 8bit 4:2:0). It's also got better IBIS and video AF than the GH5 (mk1). Main downsides (versus the GH series) are 30 minute max record times per clip (10 mins for 4k50/60p), no All-I or > 150Mbps codecs and no 1080p @ 24p recording - which has always been a weird limitation, as it does offer 4k @ 24p recording. (In the UK, used G9s from dealers are around £500 - £650 at the moment, which is excellent value for such a capable camera)

  18. I suggest taking a total-system perspective rather than the assumption you'll keep your lenses. Work out what you could sell them for, then price up options from all manufacturers buying the complete kit second-hand. Canon has a lot of pros going for it, but they cripple their video functions quite severely (to get you to buy a cinema camera) so they're potentially not the best manufacturer for your needs.

  19. I think the 2012 reference might be to the sensor, which IIRC is the same as the OG BMPCC, which was announced/released in 2012. Great stuff about the 18-90, although it's a pretty darn long lens with the crop factor! I've got a Tokina RMC 28-70 3.5-4.5 on the way which will fit my m42 speed booster, making it about as wide, but it's mainly for my GX85. I did a deep dive on walk-around vintage zooms but found that coverage at the wide end is the challenge and that nothing really hit the mark for me and how I shoot. At least, not enough to justify spending the $1000 or so I'd need to buy a Canon or Angenieux or whatever else cine zoom in good enough condition that it would hold its value.

  20. I never was a big fan of the GH4 color science. Really liked the G7 that came a year later. But the GH4 does a ton more stuff for not a lot more money. The old GH2 with some of the off the wall builds are interesting but not perfect HD by any means. More along the lines of a OG BMPCC than Clinical like the newer stuff, especially the G7. Overall GH4 hard to beat for a one size fits all. I have had all you mentioned but the G6. I just bought another A7s original, now talk about good HD.

  21. I’ve been very quiet for a while but this article has reeled me back in. Firstly, I read this forum for years before I first posted, trying to learn what the hell people were talking about. It’s been invaluable as a resource. Thank you. Also, I found your more recent YouTube content very refreshing, honest and actually very funny. There’s a huge amount of “camera-tainment” out there with the same salesy business model. I always love it when someone dares to defy conventions and expectations. Keep doing it. Lastly, although situationally it’s different, I can relate to your fatigue. I’m going through somewhat an existential crisis with my work where I’m not satisfied with anything I’m shooting or what I’m shooting with. Tired of social media, it’s falseness, and yet, it’s essentialist to everything now. The spark I once had is all but darkness. However, your story is inspiring and certainly lifts spirits. I’m glad you’re seeking your spark again. I’m sure I will too. 😊

  22. It's great to have you and the blog back. Please stay very active shooting, both to keep up your creativity and morale but also because it's far more useful for the rest of us to have real-life situations than laboratory tests to learn from. Also it just looks cool to see what you get up to out there. And please keep up your picture profile research and development, you're the best out there. I use Pro-Log and Z-Log frequently, and your C-log for the Canon DSLRs was extremely useful too. Welcome back Andrew.

  26. Eos R seems natural in regard of your wish list or a used R6. Or sell your lenses and get a Lumix S5 and some manual focus vintage lenses. Would love to seem some old school Canon Ti videos. People have been doing some amazing stuff with it.

  27. Dear Andrew, Merry Christmas and best wishes to you! Thank you for your work and this magnificient place. I wished I had contributed more than I did last year. Corona and changing social climate in Berlin have not been so easy. So I always came here to give my soul some rest but didnt share much. For giving us comfort and for this creative community and much more- thank you so much! I love your latest article/blog post. Great photos of you and great lomo shot. Looking forward to contributing and enjoying the spirit of EOSHD! love from Berlin, Marty

  28. Welcome back and Merry Christmas, I was a bit worried about you after the last couple of posts and I've seen the effect social media can have on some other people I follow. there is a photographer in the Lakes (Rob Parson: Just a walker with a camera) who I follow and who almost gave up last year after criticism online but he "pulled through" after realizing his words and pictures actually matter to more people than those who don't agree with him (and if you don't agree with somebody just don't follow them... simple). so keep it going, speak your mind and don't let the bastards grind you down.

  31. No worries, kye, you're not the only one : ) reason why these forums serve I guess, people come here to share and put the discussion in progress ; ) I also inferred the same and looked like some interesting add-on to obviously benefit "all camera types" as you wrote. Although, if there is who already is playing with the idea even if only on photo side as Nikon, I think we can estimate it will happen to electronics as well, just a matter of time. The tweet is coming from this Sony's press release from last Thursday: https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/e/news/2021/2021121601.html Sony Develops World’s First* Stacked CMOS Image Sensor Technology with 2-Layer Transistor Pixel Widens Dynamic Range and Reduces Noise by Approximately Doubling Saturation Signal Level * As of announcement on December 16, 2021.

  33. So, I recently picked up a Pixel 5a on sale and gave the Motion Cam app a go on it. I've been having some fun and finding some fairly consistent results with the full sensor (4032X3024) @ 12FPS. I think the sensor size comes close to super 8mm sizing and the results definitely have an 8mm vibe. The screen grab below is from a cinemaDNG sequence dropped into Resolve on a 1080p/ rec709/ linear timeline -> color space transform (which I didn't even know you could use in the free version) ARRI LogC output gamma -> ARRI Alexa LogC to rec709 LUT -> bumped up the saturation a bit and brought the shadows down with the log wheels Be gentle; what I know of a RAW workflow has been learned in about 2 hours this week. There's no noise reduction applied, but it seems like the downscale helped clean things up and give a more film like quality. The app is a bit clunky, but is obviously in beta and can't be fully criticized yet. Manual focus would be amazing and there were some exposure shifts that may or may not have been my fault. If someone sold this technology with a MFT lens mount on it as a modern 8mm camera I would for sure buy one. It's been fun and I'm enjoying learning about RAW correction/ grading. There seems to be a few people catching on to the app on YouTube. People with more powerful phones seem to be having better luck with things. Hopefully development continues with success and RED doesn't interfere!

    A7IV opinions

I'm upgrading my A7III to A7IV, bit disappointed with the lack of FF 60FPS but if you do video work the 10-bit and option for 4K slow mo at least makes it a backup to the A7SIII. I think 6K/8K is going to be here soon so I don't know if in 5 years any camera is going to be relevant!

    A7IV opinions

A7IV? I wish. I have one on order LOL, but I'm in the US and we won't see them for another month. Right now its the a7III/a7sIII combo for me. All of your S5 points are great and honestly features I would like to see on Sony, though I get monitoring and false color with the Ninja which I don't mind rigging. The latest Sony AF has been a game changer for me, I need glasses for anything within a few feet and its just made me so much faster, I almost never focus manually because I can't see further away with my glasses on. So I'm looking forward to the a7IV to better compliment the a7sIII - Sony's real time tracking never ceases to impress, its really, really good. The other upgrades are welcome too, and I really don't mind the 60p crop, even if I didn't have the a7sIII. Cheers Chris

    Lenses

I've been away for a while, just working on scripts and trying not to wast too much time on the internet. I just came back to share my newest lens find. I wanted an 8(ish)mm lens (24mm equivalent) for the bmpcc, to split the difference between my Fuji 12.5mm and Computar 6.5mm. I'd been thinking of the SLR Magic 8mm, but even though it's super cheap for what it is, I couldn't really afford it at the moment, plus reviews I'd read here noted the difficulty of the focus ring and set screw. Then I remembered a video on youtube showing off different lenses, including the Cosmicar 8.5mm f/1.5. I had bought what turned out to be the 2/3 format version a couple years ago when I first saw the video, which doesn't cover the sensor. The version that covers a 1" sensor has a larger front, like the Cosmicar 6.5mm lens I used to own, and it never shows up on ebay, and others had previously gone for $500 a couple years ago. But I managed to find one bundled with an "As-Is" CCTV camera. I was aware that this lens would need some modification, and luckily it took a very small amount of hand-filing the edges, as I've done with Cosmicar lenses in the past. This one only took about 30 minutes to complete, unlike other lenses. My copy also needs a little cleaning. I love this lens. It's pretty sharp from edge to edge, even wide open. It's distorted, but it's acceptable to me (I like a bit of distortion). Some grabs from the video: f/11. f/1.5 F/2 Since my Fuji 12.5mm is only good from edge to edge at around f/4 or lower, and my Computar 6.5mm is garbage above f/8, this may become by go-to wide angle lens. It should work well for glidecam shots too.
