Sounds like most of your gear is sitting unused. It doesn't really matter what you shoot nothing on, it will all look like nothing. 😜3 points -

EOSHD is back, and a Merry Christmas from me
Katrikura reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Hello to everyone on the forum! A Merry Christmas from me! I hope you're looking forward to having a good break over the holidays and are ready to welcome in 2022. Talking of holidays - I have been having a break from EOSHD for a few months. I went and sat on a hill and finally had time to reflect on my work which is this blog and the community around it. The last video had a lot of support, it's made me really appreciate what I have in a more positive light. I'm mega appreciative of the people who took the time to say how EOSHD has helped them over the years and that they want it to continue. So that's what we'll do! EOSHD is back. The Last Picture Show is one of my all time favorites. I also liked his first film, Targets.1 point -
Some really lovely cinematography

Yeah the top Los Angeles video is Really good. No one would argue about being able to produce that kind of footage, especially nighttime stuff.1 point -
The Helios is a spectacular lens and is only cheap because of the sheer quantity of them made. I've read it's the most mass-produced lens on the planet. The Helios has famously been modified by multiple groups for modern cinema use. One such conversion is by a company called Dog Schidt Optiks, which modified the Helios to flare as much as possible, to give a very retro vibe. Andrew wrote about it here: https://www.eoshd.com/lens/digital-goes-back-to-the-70s-1st-impressions-of-dog-schnit-optiks-flare-factory-58-lens-and-sample-photos/ This lens is included in this huge test of 50mm lenses, which includes many of the greatest cine lenses available regardless of price: You will note that it is very sharp wide open, and has quite pleasing characteristics. It's worth spending a few minutes comparing it to the other great optics (timestamps in the description) to really see how good it is. Of course, it flares like hell, as that's what this variation of the lens is designed to do. It's also used in the Ironglass set which is a set of professionally rehoused Soviet optics: https://ironglassadapters.com I have two of the Helios's - the 44M and a 44-2, which are included in this lens test here: The lens is a copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm but has a dreamier look, which with todays high-resolution cameras, contributes a welcome antidote to the digititis that lovers of cinema recoil from. This is an interesting article about it if you want more information.. https://www.gearfocus.com/blog/2020/05/helios-44-2-bokeh-king Don't confuse cheap with low quality! 🙂1 point

How to with John Wilson is shot with that camera. It definitely has a video look, especially in that show. It is certainly a deal. Sony cameras depreciate like no other.1 point -
I just got a Helios 44M-6 for $20 (Australian) with a camera. I am shocked at how much i like it given it is almost throw away and especially because it focuses to infinity (I was led to believe if I used a flange adapter I would have a reduced range or I could use a non flange adapter but only wide open unless the pin is taped down). I can use my cheap Neewer m42 to E mount flange adapter with infinity and able to stop down. I will probably not use it for video but I can highly recommend it (mine is almost like new).1 point

I think one of the best buys now used is the Sony FS5. I have seen them for 1200 dollars. Crazy. The variable ND alone is worth that. They are a really small cine camera. Maybe not the Best CS but hey..1 point -
This is such a great idea I wonder why no one had started such a thread. 😄 Buying quality gears for cheap is probably the most exciting thing for a videographer, especially one with GAS. It's not very healthy for the wallet though. And my girlfriend ande I used to have quite intense arguments because of that, until she gets GAS herself. Anyway, I think the BMMCC is already a great camera. I used to want it very much but could't get myself a good deal. I really like its form factor and what it is capable of. The sensors of older Blackmagic cameras are almost magical. The Varicam, on the other hand, has a very unique look. Very vibrant color, but the skintone might be a bit too meganta. However, I believe it is better than the EVA-1 in this regard. The EVA-1 has great color except for skintone which almost always requires some tweaking in post. The FS700 you own is also a hidden gem, IMO, even more so than the famous F3. Pair it with an external recorder, it is as capable as any modern camera. I even use it without the recorder for lower budget jobs and the clients love it.1 point

Don is back! Happy New Year to everyone!

Gee I don't know what to say. Well certainly thanks is in order. Yeah i missed you guys also. I went though some scary ass medical problems, actually died for a bit, but I guess too mean to die too long so hey here I am. Sepsis shock just about did me in. It knocks you down in just about every organ you have so at my age, nearly 75 now, hard to crawl back, well I never will make it back to what I was, and I have just aged the more since, happens you know. But actually right now I am really not doing too bad. My mother died a few months ago, my one daughter just had double mastectomy with breast cancer, well not much fun not counting this God Damn Pandemic. Just what the hell I needed lol. So I have been sort of out of it for a bit, literally, bummed out for a bit and working my way back. I am reorganizing my camera, video gear for less heft, and a little more creativity. Nobody knows how long you will live but I know I am running out of time so I just want to have a bit of fun while I can. So I came back here to be re educated and reunite with some of my old friends, which I have had very few of in my life. I hope I can contribute a little past knowledge, screw ups and all, plenty of those, and have a few good forward thinking threads evolve. And maybe a few fireworks to add to the fire. Hey I am still Don you know. But yeah I have mellowed a bit trust me. I went out though the tunnel and saw what few have seen and felt, and for the limited time was super peaceful and intriguing. I think I was going up and not down like a lot of people thought would happen. 😬1 point -

In fact, the statement in the (translated) article is: "Canon's SLR flagship model is known as the "EOS-1" series, the first of which appeared in 1989. The latest model "EOS-1D X Mark 3" released in 2020 will be the last model in fact." He is talking about flagship DSLRs. Maybe they could release some midrange models (the Rebels still are VERY sought after here). even some kind of 5Dish model. But probably they will just keep selling the current models until there is no more demand.1 point
