Do cameras and lenses scale proportionately?
John Matthews and one other reacted to kye for a topic
ie, if I took a FF camera and all the available lenses, put them in a shrink machine, set it to 50%, and hit go, would I get an MFT system with the same optical characteristics? ie, same FOV, save DoF, etc? I'm not talking about the electrical side of things as that's an entirely different ballgame, just the optics and sensor size. In physics there are some things that scale linearly, but there are other things really don't, for example volume. If you put something in a 50% scaling machine it would be one-eighth the volume, and weight (assuming identical materials). Lens size and weight are smaller with MFT but not proportionately, in any way I've been able to identify anyway.2 points -
Correction: According to Canon, C70 Cinema RAW Light recording will be internal to the SD card: https://www.canon.co.uk/video-cameras/eos-c70/?fbclid=IwAR2nBNoajqaNaIfH_u0du_JtTESFDUEEjCauYmzFwG1wGoxkgLjGc00TtY4 Cinema RAW light The EOS C70 now offers users the ability to capture Cinema RAW Light internally to SD cards*. RAW provides you with greater image quality and flexibility in post-production. On-top of the existing 10-bit XF-AVC currently found in the EOS C70, 12-bit Cinema RAW Light LT features data rates up to 645Mbps, offering much more manageable/efficient file sizes to streamline your workflow, while retaining the same benefits of RAW. Simultaneous recording of Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC Proxies is also supported. * firmware available in March 20222 points

Playing devils advocate momentarily... the bm p4k is mft, Not sure that black magic design, got your memo about cuteness or smallness or a flippy screen 😉 Still i am happy enough with my camera. With a olympus body cap lens, i can get it in a pocket just... 😀1 point -
I believe Poco aka Redmi for certain models can be a good experiment route indeed and I'd dare to give it a try... But you have here a safer harbour already tested and fine bet (BTW, I love my OnePlus, my best mobile phone ever : ) You find it refurbished in your country (I've just checked, Marty!) for €350-€250 ;- )1 point

There's an android powered Samsung APS-C camera with NX mount, would be interesting if the developer could support that - probably only in 1080p but worth a go surely 🙂 I think the old Android versions lack the recent API that supports raw even in stills mode though, so that might hold the older stuff back. LG V50 should be ok, but I think for same price you can get a better main sensor.1 point -

I like the original question because it inspires perspectives on size, ergonomy and camera choices. So, silly me, I decided to buy a BMMCC and so I did. But what reasons for? I got attracted by the cute size, by the prospect of cutely sized files in Prores LT and a great image to size ratio. I will see how that plays out regarding lenses. Tevidon lenses are not that easy to rig. After all small size is not a virtue by itself I figure.1 point -

I'd take it the other direction. The smallest MFT camera is the GM1 and the smallest "real" lens (with AF) is the 14mm f/2.5. The grand total of that combo is 259g and a volume of 0.181 liters (treating the camera as a block and the lens as a cylinder): GM1 = 54.9×98.5×30.4 = .164 liters, 14mm f/2.5 = 27.75 radius x 20.5 length = .017 liters So can we find a FF combo that is only double that figure? 518g and .362 liters It should be possible, but think it's never been done. The smallest FF camera is the Sigma FP (I think). It's weight and volume is 422g and accurately described as .357 liters, leaving only 96g and .005 liters left. Can you make a lens (with AF) for that? The weight is definitely possible, but the volume probably wouldn't work out. One major constant with all this is the human hand. There's only so much you can comfortably hold and operate. The other constant I suppose would be a pocket if you're taking it everywhere.1 point -
Yeah, great colours on this one - DoP and colourist knew what they were doing. Skintones were really nice despite the pushed colours (which often makes skin tones go nuclear), the image was super clean, and even the off-WB lighting didn't do bad things like clipping channels or rotating hues when getting brighter and dimmer etc. Even the film emulation style natural light car stuff still had good colours and skin tones that matched apart from being less saturated.1 point

I didn't arrive there yet. Only a tablet with me where I am now. And I was still unable to install the PC tools available from his source. No PC capable of much these days. As soon as I will have the new Apple to come, well, hands-on, more tests to follow under the radar then : ) But for his disclaimer, I infer exactly the same as you, yeah, I think so. If not, why such 10 - 12 - 16 nomenclature? It's applied to the DNG, I guess.1 point -
This new boy is probably my ‘perfect camera’ at this point in time… I doubt very much that I will switch to Canon as a system and get one though. My primary tools, camera body wise, are an S1R for stills and an S1H for video. I did consider a pair of R5’s for hybrid use but it has 2 issues for me. 1: Cost 2: Overheating/reliability/trust issues The new boy is surely going to be more than a ‘standard’ R5 so whilst Point 2: may be solved, Point 1 counters that even further. The camera that ticks the most boxes of all is probably Nikon’s new Z9…but it’s enormous. Some think and say the S1H is, but paired with the f2 Sigma primes that I use, it isn’t, but the Z9 is a beast and for me would be like returning to my old D3s days which is something I’d rather not do. It bodes well for the next gen Z6/7 though… Sony’s A7iv, loathe as I am to admit it, (I am not a fan of the brand despite having owned and still own and use, some of their products) is possibly the ‘best’ compromise right now for my needs and probably, if I was out shopping with a clean sheet start today, that’s where I’d go. But this year for me is all about using what I have, partly because: A: It’s bloody good kit with my only gripe being less than stellar AF for video (my compromise). B: I just bought a new MacBook Pro1 because I needed both a laptop and a machine full stop that was an editing beast. Plus the only drone I have ever had was an original Mavic Air and having crashed it over a dozen times, it flies wonky and needed replacing, so a new Air 2S arrived this last week. C. If I update my camera system in 2023, I am not going to do so until I know with certainty what Panasonic are doing, ie, maybe a new 2 series S1 line (but unless the AF is up to scratch it will be bye bye Panny) and also what Fuji do with the XH2. The only camera system I have ever really ‘loved’ is Fuji so if they hit it out of the park with the XH2, it’s my most likely destination at some point.1 point

Bingo. You win @homestar_kevin! Congrats to bragging rights. Indecently, how do you like your Sony VCL-ECU1? I checked out some videos on it, but most people just said they got it because the DMC-GWC1 wasn't for sale anymore. I had been looking for a used one for roughly 4 years (off and on). I finally found one a few weeks ago and the guy wanted a direct transfer... (a bit risky) but I did it and he followed through. As I mentioned above, I cannot believe that we don't have a better solution as this set up dates back to 2012. I saw a few others available over the years, but they were just asking too much or they were too far away. Here it is on my GM1 (as my Olympus E-P7 had to go into the shop for IBIS recalibration). The AF is working almost flawlessly on my E-M1 ii with tracking and face-detect on. I have to make a few more tests, but I like what I see. Also, as it was designed for this lens, everything is super easy to take on and off. I'm going to try adding some ND on it now, but it should be a challenge as there are no filter threads (nothings perfect).1 point

Mi 10 is the cheap alternative. Usually on eBay for under $300 It shoots near identical video specs to the Mi 11 Ultra including 8K but the sensor is a bit smaller and lacks the periscope 5x folding optics. Sensor still massive compared to an iPhone though. I've been very impressed with it in 10bit 6K LOG and 8K H.265. The mc24 app is a good place to start for high bitrate video. Not tested the RAW app with it yet but will do soon.1 point -
Best color I´ve seen so far from the S series. Blacks are a bit too crushed for my taste, even though I do like a rich and contrasty look.1 point

Canon EOS R5C
jgharding reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I think Dual Pixel AF will come to Panasonic's next bunch of cameras. A lot of people here I am sure would love to shoot with an Alexa, Digital Bolex or RED with manual focus lenses or anamorphic LOMOs so autofocus isn't even the top priority for most but I do 100% agree it's very useful for every day work I really think the R5C should have these too, being a Cinema EOS camera and likely $6000+? It's more likely to be exact same hardware as R5C just with the fan and firmware update to remove the artificial record timer.1 point -
My two cents too, vimeo vids shot with tech pre 2015 are much nicer thought out, are more felt with an artists sensibility and competence, more interesting done than with hightech stuff from the later years. Low budget HD cams beginning with the likes of GH1, Canon Ti and so on showed an approach more connected to the possibilites and impact of visual cinematic language than these days. I am talking about semi pro stuff. Pro ads and big money productions are not of interest to me when it comes to the short form of film.1 point
